Committee for Forum Inclusiveness

Purpose:
Perhaps I am old-fashioned, but the forums are where the real action in the region occurs. Here we have regional government, roleplay, nation interaction, events, diplomacy, army operations, etc. In what may very well be the most important committee, we will discuss ways to (a) get people to check out the forums and (b) bring them into the forums with the hope they join roleplay, government, etc. New people are the lifeblood of any region, and a good region will keep that influx of new members coming. After all, today's new people become tomorrow's roleplay superpowers, legislators, army commanders, and, dare I say, delegates.

Potential points of discussion:
  • A regional telegram system - we currently have a welcome telegram. Should it be updated? Should we send a regular telegram to bring people to the regional forums with some frequency?
  • A welcoming committee for new members, especially those who post in the introduction forum. Everyone likes to feel welcome, and perhaps we should welcome them in and point them in the right direction?
  • Work with the Forum Organization Committee to make navigation easier for new members
  • Follow-up telegrams to nations that recently applied for citizenship?
  • Work with the Magisterium to see if there is any way we can streamline citizenship

Participants:
All individuals who hope to see new members in The East Pacific. So, hopefully that's everyone.

Leaders:
Todd McCloud
(One more if interested)

Timeframe:
From now until November 20, 2016, or sooner if the committee comes to a resolution sooner

End Goal:
We will have a system in place that will routinely bring new members onto our forums, but they won't just show up and forget about this place - we will also retain new members and get them on board to serve our region as they wish to serve it!

For what it's worth, this is our current telegram sent out to nations that move to The East Pacific:

Quote:

Greetings from your home region, The East Pacific!

We wish to welcome you among our ranks and our many diverse nations. Here your nation is free to do as it pleases or rise above the ranks and aspire for more. Your nation can answer issues and occasionally interact with other nations, but there is so much more to do. Join the World Assembly and endorse your delegate and viziers for the security of the region!

But wait - there's more! We have a Regional Forum, where our regional government occurs. If you would like to get more involved in the region, read this handy dispatch on how to get started in our region. Become a citizen! Improve our laws! Create policies! Be bold!

Would your nation wish to interact with other nations in The East Pacific? Read up on how to roleplay in TEP and, if that is something your nation is interested in, how to claim a spot on our map.

We at The East Pacific understand this may be a bit of a confusing time, especially with all the various telegrams coming into your inbox at once. To stop those recruitment telegrams, simply go to the telegram settings and filter the telegrams you want. That should help.

Good luck, and be bold!

My suggestions:

+ A regular regional newsletter sent by the Ministry of Immigration which provides a quick update on the goingons on the forum.
+ An API telegram system which auomatically sends telegrams encouraging new WA members to join and participate on the regional forums (considering new WA members are more likely to be active then non-WAs).
+ Relentlessy pushing and promoting the roleplaying aspect of the regional forums (this seems to be a big reason for newbies joining the forums in TEP).
+ Creating a regional Discord chat server. From my own personal experience, many large regions (such as the North Pacific and Europeia) that have changed from IRC and/or Skype as the primary forms of offsite chat to a regional Discord server have found it to be highly beneficial in encouraging newcomers to join the offsite forums and get actively involved in the community.

I'll address your bullets point-by-point, if that's okay.

The first point would be better addressed in the Foreign Affairs committee. While that's a good thing overall, this committee is charged with pulling people from the region onto the forums.

For points 2-5, please read the current telegram we supply to every new nation in TEP. That's what we've been sending for about half a year. Follow the links too. Does it need updating?

We have a Discord server. It is located here. While it's been active from time to time, I don't really find it amazingly useful.

Speaking as a new user, I think it would be beneficial to have a some sort of mentoring program. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing in the overall game, and I don't really know where to start. Having someone who is well versed in the game to bounce questions off of would be extremely beneficial. I've been reading NS forum and TEP forum stuff but for someone just starting out it is kind of overwhelming.

I actually really like this idea. If I understand correctly, if you had someone who was a sort of vet who had a good feel for the game, for like 2-3 weeks so that you could ask this person questions whenever you needed to know something, that would be a tremendous help?

Exactly, or even just a how to for new players with links and a flow of what we should read in what order. That way we have some direction, know where the best information is and then also have someone to ask questions to if we don't understand exactly.

RE: Discord: Link to it from the WFE, or the Skype channel (or even both). People are more likely to click the link than sign up to the forums. And it's downhill getting them onto the forums from there.

Laugh hard. Run fast. Be kind.
Based on feedback from this committee and my own that I have done an update to our header. It will still need some work going forward but it is a start. Feel free to chime in with Forum Appearance / Organization since I am pushing for a newcomers first idea.

I think the buddy-idea might be a good suggestion. It's indeed kind of overwhelming, being new, and I remember from my first days that it's quite complicated to get through all the information on the forum and the game.

This could be a simple system where newcomers apply for a "buddy", which is someone (a veteran) who has listed himself as available, and who can answer all kinds of questions by chat or Telegram?

I'm all for this idea... but the trouble is numbers. Every time I cast a net out for some older folks to get involved and help recruit or help direct new people, I get a plethora of excuses. I know everyone is busy, but we all still call TEP home. If I could seriously have fifteen minutes where I know the individual is devoted and will do whatever they can to help this region out, that would be a huge help.

As for me, I've been recently asked to write a book chapter for a book on polymers. My free time is difficult, but I am willing to spend at least some of it to help our region. All I ask is for vets to give me ten to fifteen minutes of their daily time to make this region great for all of us. Are any older, more experienced nations willing to donate that time?

In lieu of the delegate elections and impending holidays in the US, I think it would be wise to extend this committee to Sunday the 27th.

If I do win these elections, it is my fullest intention to carry on these policies and not jeopardize what we have worked hard for during these programs.

If I do not win, I will need time to get the new delegate informed on these committees and their results.

Either way, a short report will be generated full of suggestions taken from those who brought forth ideas. Continue with ideas and suggestions. We will begin to finalize things by the Thanksgiving holiday!
