This is the thread for editions of the newspaper known as the Tretridia Leader, the primary newsletter in the capital city of Tretrid. (The Karuble is the currency of Tretrid) Feel free to tear apart comment on it.

EDIT: (OOC: I got tired of just havaing one newspaper) The Draeset News is a televised news channel, and is popular in the city of Draeset.

Tretrid Allies With Setzna
Today, Prime Minister Adam Wilson signed an order passed by the Second Republic National Council that officially allied itself with the government of Setzna in its civil war. It allied with the government because the side opposing the government is the fascist United Imperial Rebel Front. Defense Minister Kyle Johnson commenced mobilization of troops shortly afterwards. Troop-transporting jets are being flown to Setzna, and frigates, one aircraft carrier, and troop-transporting ships set sail for Setzna.

Exclusive Interview with Prime Minister Adam Wilson
The Tretridia Leader had an exclusive interview with Prime Minister Adam Wilson, where Wilson explained why he signed the proposal allying Tretrid with Setzna.

Who convinced you to sign the proposal?
My Foreign Minister, Bartholomew Smith, showed me the proposal, which had been passed in the Council. I was somewhat reluctant to sign the proposal, what with a party in Aelitia supporting the UIRF, but in the end, Foreign Minister Smith convinced me to sign the proposal.
What was the reaction in Setzna?
From what I heard, they were celebrating.
How did Foreign Minister Smith convince you to sign the proposal?
Well, he informed me that the UIRF was fascist. He also reminded me that the legitimate government had a similar ideology with ours, which is probably why it passed the Council. He also told me that our allies in Emberwood Coast were expressing interest in the war.
What do you think are the international consequences of this alliance?
Well, I'll force Emberwood Coast into the war by the treaty negotiated between them and us, and maybe discourage that fascist party an Aelitia.
What do you think will be the economic consequences?
You're asking the wrong person. You should be asking the Minister of Domestic Affairs, who didn't discuss the policy.

War Comes Yet Again!
Today, Tretrid has declared war on the Fire Pact, an authoritarian organization headed by Tripartite State, because of considerable civil rights violations and being a major obstacle to the spread of democracy.
The declaration passed through the National Council only because the President of the Council, Matthew Irvine, broke the tie. It took almost an hour for Prime Minister Adam Wilson to sign it.
Since the distance between Tretrid and Tripartite State are too long, a fleet that was originally deployed to Setzna as reinforcements against the UIRF will move from Setzna, around the UIRF fleets, and to Tripartite State.
The declaration would also affect Tretrid's allies, as Emberwood Coast was already hostile to the Fire Pact, but the declaration of war may force them into war, too, even though they have already begun to mobilize before the declaration of war.
Tretrid's current enemy, the UIRF, would also be affected, as they are likely to ally with the Fire Pact and would therefore be a major threat to democracy.
People don't expect it to be an easy fight, especially because unlike the URIF, Tripartite State is a soverign nation, and it isn't as easy to fight as the organized band of military veteran rebels that make up the UIRF.

What You Need to Know About the Upcoming Election

November is coming to a close, which means that the elections are coming. The Prime Minister seat will be open as always, and the National Council is also subject to change. The following is a list of all parties in Tretrid:
The Liberal Party is the majority party, and is extremely popular within Tretrid, having 80 councilmen out of the 100 people in the council (not including the President of the Council). They support regulations on companies, so they don't endanger people in their gaining money.
The People's Party is communist, has 10 councilmen, and supports a range from extremely heavy regulations on private companies to outlawing private corporations, because they believe that corporations would do anything to gain a profit, no matter the toll on human health it takes.
The Conservative Party is highly unpopular, having only 6 councilmen. They are commonly joked about, and they support both fiscal conservatism and social conservatism. They support lower taxes and lower regulations, as they believe that what is good for business is good for the nation.
The other 4 councilmen are from smaller parties.

General Election Begins!
Yesterday, the Prime Minister candidates for the Liberal Party, People's Party, and the Conservative Party were officially nominated. Due to term limits, a Prime Minister may not be nominated for a second year of office. Instead, the Liberal Party nominated Domestic Minister James Stevenson to be their candidate. The communist People's Party nominated Councilman Bobby Mitchell, while the Conservative Party nominated Councilman Timmy Ward.
Today, the campaign season for the government election began, and will end on the election on December 30th. Each nominee have started to give their characteristic campaign promises. Domestic Minister Stevenson promised to continue Prime Minister Wilson's policy of spreading democracy around the world and defending it where it is threatened, while also promising to keep businesses in line with regulations and giving people more freedoms. Councilmen Mitchell promised to spread the concept of social democracy and keep businesses from "using the people for a profit." Councilman Ward promised to keep Tretrid out of other nation's affairs and improve the ecomony by cutting regulations for businesses, while putting stricter laws on the people.

The Latest Polls are Here

After polling 1,368,000 people, The Tretridia Leader has gathered the opinions of a representative sample of people. 75% support the Liberal Party, 15% support the People's Party, 9% support the Conservative Party, and 1% chose a third party. It predicts that the Liberal Party will win, likely because Prime Minister Wilson is highly popular, and Stevenson is his second-in-command and is using Wilson's support to his advantage.

War to End
Due to a surprising turn of events, peace talks have commenced to end the war against Tripartite State and Asendavia.
After military officials at Fort Johnston fired an electromagnetic pulse at the Fire Pact's space station, known as the "Eternal Wrath," the systems were knocked out. It was set to a level to bring it out of commission for an hour, but for an unknown reason, the blackout lasted for weeks. Only the androids onboard survived, due to failed life support.
After it became functional, the Eternal Wrath was ordered to fire on and destroy Myriad Station, a station operated by the SEPC. There was only a short warning to the crew onboard Myriad, and they had to evacuate in a few minutes. After the crew evacuated, the projectile fired by the Eternal Wrath struck. It blasted the station in pieces, and differing velocities and therefore differing orbital periods spread it out across its orbit.
There were many satellites in a similar orbit, and after a while, debris collided with them, making debris. The Kessler Syndrome occurred, as debris hit satellites making more debris hitting satellites. Many satellites with an orbit intersecting that of Myriad's were damaged or destroyed. Even a partially built station built by Tretrid's space program, the SPSR, was severely damaged.
Due to their satellites being put out of commission, the Northern Gondwanan Union intervened. They enforced diplomatic sanctions, forcibly deporting citizens of the belligerents or renounce their citizenship, and threatened economic sanctions unless peace talks commenced.
Emberwood Coast volunteered to host a peace conference in its capital, Aura. Talks were held in the Auroran Continental Assembly building. Prime Minister Adam Wilson and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bartholomew Smith has flown there, and is now part of the negotiating process.

Prime Minister's Approval Rating May Affect Election

This has been a crazy and stressful month for Prime Minister Wilson. When he allied with Emberwood Coast against Tripartite State, his popularity soared to 90%. His approval, however, plummeted to 60% when Myriad Station was destroyed, and went slightly up when peace talks began. His popularity will almost certainly affect if Domestic Minister James Stevenson, the Liberal Party candidate for Prime Minister, will win, instead of the People's Party's nominee, Councilman Bobby Mitchell. In the latest poll, Stevenson fell to 55%, while Mitchell rised to 35%.

Draeset News

The logo appears
KEVEN ROGERS (from background): Live from Draeset.
The logo fades to the anchors' desk
KEVIN ROGERS: This is the Draeset News. The date is December 31, 2016 CE.
SUSAN JONES: The elections are ongoing, as an essential part of our government. We hand this to our political correspondent, Lawrence Sanders, at a ballot dropoff in Draeset. Lawrence, how is it there?
The camera shifts to the front of a building in Draeset. Lawrence Sanders stands a few meters away from a line of voters.
LAWRENCE SANDERS: Things are going quite fine here. Everybody is excited.
He turns to a random voter in line, Timothy Henderson
LAWRENCE SANDERS: How does it feel like while you wait to vote?
TIMOTHY HENDERSON: It is very intriguing, and I can't wait to see what people will chose for their Prime Minister, or their Councilmen.
Lawrence Sanders turns back to the camera
LAWRENCE SANDERS: Well, there you have it. For those viewers out there, before you vote, you should know what goes on and how you should vote. Prime Minister elections in Tretrid use "Instant Runoff Voting," or IRV. If we used First-past-the-post, the most common, if one candidate got 40% while the other candidates both got 30%, the candidate with 40% wins. This is a huge problem, as 60% of the people voted against that person. With IRV, you vote with your preferences by numbering the candidates. Initially, the first preference is counted first, but if no candidate has a clear majority, the candidate with the least votes is dropped, and the votes redistributed by second pick. If there is no second pick, those votes are dropped. They are than counted again. This process repeats, going down the preference list until there is a majority. Back to you, Kevin.
The camera switches back to the newsroom
KEVIN ROGERS: Thank you. The current projected winner is Domestic Minister James Stevenson, the Liberal Party candidate, on the first round at 55%. See you after the break.
Newsroom fades out, and commercials are shown.

Election Results Announced!

Yesterday, the election ended with the new year. After hours with many volunteers tirelessly working to count the votes, they have come up with a victor for the Prime Minister Election. Domestic Minister James Stevenson won in the first round by a majority of 52.5%, so another round of voting wasn't needed. His campaign manager states that Stevenson is "very happy." He will officially replace Prime Minister Adam Wilson on February 8, the anniversary of the founding of the First Republic. He will announce his cabinet picks soon.

Information on the Council Vote

Though the Prime Minister uses Instant-Runoff voting, the way the people are represented in the National Council is a variant of the mixed-member proportional system. Instead of voting for a candidate, people vote for a party. If the vote was 60-40 in all provinces, the candidate with 60 would get all the seats in the first-past-the-post system. Instead, parties have to draw up a preference system, and 100 members that the party would consider would be ranked from 1 to 100. The party with 60% of the vote would then select member 1 to 60 to be placed in the council, and the one with 40 votes would do likewise with 40 people. This assures that the parties would have a proportional part of the Council corresponding to the people's vote.

JMC Deploys in Emberwood Coast
By Arthur Bailey

A few weeks ago, Tretrid's ally and fellow SEPC member Emberwood Coast slashed its budget, likely due to a pacifist sentiment. Now another nation, Setzna, has opted to deploy the SEPCF's Joint Military Corps (JMC) into Emberwood Coast.
This decision has been scrutinized by Emberwood Coast, since their president cut funding towards the military in half. The decision to station the JMC in Emberwood Coast has also met criticism from the government of Tretrid, as well as officials from Stratarin. According to Tretrid's SEPC representative, Catherine Thompson, "Our main concern with Setna's decision is that Emberwood Coast did not properly consent to the deployment beforehand, and the SEPC Security Council also did not vote on whether to deploy. Among other concerns is that other nations might label our allies at Emberwood Coast as 'weaklings' and 'hippies.'

"We are shocked and horrified by this attempt on the life of one of our allies and fellow SEPC nations," Stevenson said. "We stand with the Stratarians and hope that the person who did this horrible act will be brought to justice."

Stevenson also tried to enlighten the press on some of the known facts about the attempt, but for some of the questions, he had to admit that he did not know. "I'm afraid that I do not

More Information Released About Assassination Attempt
By Arthur Bailey

COYDEN, STRATARIN—Investigators in Stratarin have revealed details of the attempted assassination on their General Secretary, Viktor Drugov. They have released the identity of the assassin, Vladimir Zvyagin, who was shot and killed by Major Lenya Dragomirov.

In the Coyden Harbinger, one of Stratarin's newspapers, Dragomirov recounted the actions that saved Drugov's life. He said that he set up security teams and designated them by number. Then he regularly checked on their status. When he lost contact with Team 3, he ran to their last known position, where he saw Vladimir firing a rifle aimed at Drugov. He

Exclusive Interview with General Secretary Drugov
By Mary Edwards

COYDEN, STRATARIN—I had the honor of being able to go the capital city of Stratarin, Coyden, to interview the General Secretary, Viktor Drugov. Below is a transcript of the interview.

Edwards: So, Drugov, it is an honor to be meeting you.
Drugov: Thank you, Ms. Edwards. In turn, it's my pleasure to be here.
Edwards Okay. Now on to the first question. How were you impressed by Major Dragomirov's actions?
Drugov: Very, of course. [clears throat]He is a distinguished, bright young officer, and under the protection of any other man I would not be alive for this interview.
Edwards: I understand. His actions seem to be particularly heroic. Do you intend on rewarding him?
Drugov: Naturally. At the very least, a promotion is most definitely in order.
Edwards: Do you believe the assassination attempt was part of a larger plot, or was it an isolated incident?
Drugov: There is no way to be certain until Procurator General Starikov's investigation is complete. Though it indeed may be part of some larger plot, I suspect that this Vladimir Zyvagin was simply hired by Sem'ya or some other organization. It wouldn't be the first attempt on my life, and I doubt it will be the last. [chuckles] I'd almost be disappointed if it were.
Edwards: After this incident, how faithful are you in the security system?
Drugov: In this case, given the surroundings and area, I'm not sure what could have been done differently, other than ensuring better training for officers of the law, As for security systems in primary government buildings, I can personally assure you that they are tested and true.
Edwards: Okay. What do you think you will do now to bring the people responsible for this act to justice?
Drugov: [smiles slightly] Well, the person responsible has already been brought to justice, you could say. As for dealing with the organization of Sem'ya itself, I plan to further tighten law enforcement in cities with greater criminal activity.
Edwards: How quickly do you believe Sem'ya will fall apart?
Drugov: It may be beyond our lifetimes. [sighs] Evidence suggests they have a strong international presence, and potentially an extensive sect operating in Setzna. Of course, that is mostly speculation based on our findings, but Sem'ya has a knack for survival.
Edwards: How did the cabinet respond to the attempt on your life?
Drugov: I'm sure there was some disappointment, especially from the First Deputy Premier. [chuckles] In all seriousness, though, it was exactly what you would expect: concern and relief. At least, apparent concern and relief.
Edwards: [clears throat] So, what was the event like from your perspective?
Drugov: The first thing that I, or anyone, really noticed was Zvyagin's gunshot, soon followed by Dragomirov's. It was quite chaotic. The crowd quickly began to disperse, my guards practically forced me down into the tank, and several minutes later I emerged to a considerably more sparsely populated area.
Edwards: What happened after that?
Drugov: I quickly dismounted the tank and was immediately met by several guards." [sighs] "I personally don't enjoy this much security, but I can't very well complain now. Anyway, [clears throat] I'm soon met by Dragomirov himself, who gives me a quick report. Several officers of the law check the building to confirm his story, and meanwhile I'm escorted away "for my own safety." [scoffs]
Edwards: I have one last question for you. What would you like to say to the readers of the newspaper this interview will be printed on?
Drugov:Firstly, I would like to thank them for reading. An uninformed population is easily conquered, after all. Secondly, I would like to reiterate to you and the staff of the Leader that it was a pleasure to be here. And finally, on a more somber note, I offer my personal condolences to the families and friends of officers Sokholov, Polova, and Vasliev, all killed by Zvyagin.
Edwards: It has been an honor meeting you, Mr. Drugov.
Drugov: Thank you, Ms. Edwards. [offers handshake] Until our next meeting.
Edwards: [accepts handshake] May we cross paths again.

More Information on Shooting
By Rose Allen

Tretridia—Investigators have released more details on the attempted assassination of Prime Minister James Stevenson, and have apprehended a suspect.

Acting Prime Minister Melissa Gray appeared in an address in front of the public and condemned the shooting. She informed everybody that Stevenson was alive, and to be calm.

Stevenson underwent surgery and is currently recovering. He is expected to be discharged on Tuesday, though he will be confined to a wheelchair for some time.

Investigators found an ejected cartridge from a pistol at the scene. The cartridge was traced back to a gun owned by a man named Benjamin Morris, who was apprehended. He will be arraigned on Wednesday.

Tretridia—Today, the person who tried to assassinate Stevenson, Benjamin Morris, faced a judge for the first time.

The prosecution presented their evidence, which included the cartridge ejected from the gun, plans found in his apartment about killing Stevenson, and that he was a radical GXE supporter while everybody knew that Stevenson strongly opposed the GXE.

The defense is expected to start making their case on Saturday.

Status on the Home Front
By Arthur Bailey

Tretridia—Backlash from the public against the Kuthern's use of land mines in Xagrurg has grown.

This comes days after the Legislature officially condemned their use of the weapon, stating that "such a weapon does not make any difference between civilian and soldier… Such behavior is careless and can not be easily forgiven, even with an ally."

Pundits quickly took to covering what they thought the Tretridian and Kuthern government should have done, while the Kuthern government was less than approving of the condemnation. In a letter sent to the Tretridian government, which was released to the Leader with the permission of Stevenson, Queen Naomi II of Kuthernburg wrote, "This is a utter [sic] disgrace to condemn a ally admist [sic] a war, civilian casualties happen in every war I do not condemn killing civilian's [sic], and I have already agreed to your previous terms but the soldiers were unaware of civilians that were left not to mention that they just so happen to run out into a trap laid to slow the enemy down while my boys and girls were evacuating."

We surveyed 1,500 randomly selected people by telephone. 85% of them said that they disapproved of the Kutherns' use of land mines, and the support for the war in Aurora dropped by 8% from the last poll we made.

Update on Morris Trial
By Rose Allen

Tretridia—The highly publicized trial of Benjamin Morris, who was accused of attempting to assassinate Prime Minister James Stevenson, continues.

Today, one of Stevenson's bodyguards, PamMyers, gave an eyewitness account of the events of June 1.

Myers said, "I was sitting right next to the Prime Minister, and he was looking out the window. Suddenly a gunshot rang out, and there was a bullet wound in Stevenson's hand and leg. The others heard the shot and headed to the hospital. I looked out the window and saw a man throw the gun to the ground. That man looked just like Morris here," She gestured at Morris, who was standing behind a glass enclosure wearing an orange prisoner jumpsuit with a belly chain, "I would say that that he was the assassin."

Morris's lawyer, Erick Owen, cross-examined Myers, particularly about how she concluded that the person with the gun she saw out the window was Morris.

In response to the attempted assassination, the Legislature tightened gun laws and background checks, while the company that manufactured the limousine Stevenson was riding in refitted the car so the windows would be bulletproof as well as reflective from the outside during day (due to the behavior of light bouncing off glass).

Stevenson's Term in Review
By Arthur Bailey

Tretridia—The year is coming to a close, which means it's election season.

This year has been interesting. James Stevenson took office when the South-East Pacific Coalition was about the peak of its power. It was only 6 months ago that the SEPC was able to make its demands heard. However, those days are past now. The events of this summer, including the assassination of Rurik Lukin in Stratarin and the start of the War in Aurora split the Coalition in twain, causing its power and influence to plummet. Its place on the international stage is now largely replaced by its rival, the Fire Pact Alliance. Meanwhile, the Atlantian Alliance was created in the wake of the Atlantian Theater of the war, to create an international geopolitical organization to prevent such events from happening again.

The Tretrid that entered this year 2017 C.E. was drastically different from the one that will leave it. Maybe the Tretrid that is after 2018 will be completely alien to us.

Vital Information on the Upcoming Election
By Mary Edwards

Tretridia—As many officials retire, campaigns for government positions are running rampant.

Both Prime Minister Stevenson and Foreign Minister Smith announced their retirement from their respective positions. Stevenson, when asked why, said that "One year is stressful enough."

Regardless of Stevenson's opinion on the office, political parties are scrambling to fill positions in the National Council, National Assembly, and chose someone to be the new Prime Minister.

Here is an updated version of what each party stands for and has been criticized for:

The Liberal Party: The Liberal Party has held a supermajority in the National Council and a majority in the National Assembly since the Wilson Administration. They lean left, and support increased welfare and stringent business regulation. This party is the party of Adam Wilson and James Stevenson, both of whom have been called warmongers by their opponents for their involvement in the Four Days War and the War in Aurora respectively. The person most likely to become Prime Minister, Robert Evans, leans center-left, supports a "live and let live" foreign policy, and has said on multiple occasions that he wished that both sides could work and write a bipartisan solution for Tretrid's issues. His plans for foreign policy have led some to call him "isolationist" and his hopes of bipartisanship "unrealistic." Evans is favored by the center and the moderate left.

The Conservative Party: The Conservative Party is the main opposition in both houses of the Legislature, and are right-wing. They are traditionalist, prefer the status quo, and support budget cuts and less regulation. Their candidate for Prime Minister, Eric Edwards, has said that he "would be harsher on Stratarin" and wishes for closer ties to the capitalist Setzna.
