![]() Sixty-three dead, nearly 200 wounded in subway bombing near Balkanska Square Lukashenko, Federal District A blast ripped through the Balkanska Square Metro Station early Thursday morning as subway riders were on their way to work, killing 63 and wounding nearly 200. Troops of the National Gendarmerie and officers from the Federal Police responded to the scene with local fire and EMS, and the entire metro system was shut down. As of 8 PM, the metro system remains shut down and will remain so until Friday afternoon. Two other men with undetonated suicide belts in two other metro stations which failed to detonate. They were shot and killed by security forces. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack though federal authorities believe the bombers likely had ties to the Dverian Nationalist Front, who have been responsible for smaller scale attacks in recent months. |

![]() Federal Police shoot and kill man in Balkanska Square Lukashenko, Federal District Federal Police officers shot and killed a man with a gun in Balkanska Square near the metro station, where a blast killed 63 and wounded almost 200 last month. Reports of an armed man waving a gun around in the Square began coming in at 8:02 AM, with Federal Police arriving within minutes of the first call. Security was tightened significantly at major metro stations following the Balkanska Square Bombing, Federal Police and National Gendarmerie responsible for patrolling public areas. The unnamed man was shot after aiming his rifle at a Federal Police officer, and died at the scene. The Federal Police are currently investigating the matter, though it is not believed at this time there is a connection between the man and the bombing. |
