Greetings flag seekers -- There are a couple of resources you might want to use when creating your own flag. If building from scratch, consider these helpful guidelines (illustrated and showing exceptions to the rule): North American Vexillogical Association's Good Flag, Bad Flag by Ted Kaye 1. Keep It Simple The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory. 2. Use Meaningful Symbolism The flag’s images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes. 3. Use 2–3 Basic Colors Limit the number of colors on the flag to three, which contrast well and come from the standard color set. 4. No Lettering or Seals Never use writing of any kind or an organization’s seal. 5. Be Distinctive or Be Related Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections. If browsing for ideas, consider checking out this site or its many mirrors: Flags of the World with tens of thousands of flags FOTW U.S. commercial mirror site FOTW U.S. non-commercial mirror site FOTW Australian educational mirror site FOTW German commercial mirror site I try to create flags that I could make from cloth in real life. Have fun! |

Great source! I agree that this fellow has taken his rules a bit too far, but the overall guidelines are sound. |

I too question Josh Parson's letter grades, since he gives poor marks to the USA, generally considered an excellent flag. He considers excessive stars wrong, so with 50 stars (and counting ) the United States gets ranked poorly. His problem is he takes it too literally. Yes, stars are often over used and abused on flags, but sometimes they really do mean something. And his bit about "plagiarism" is just plain wrong; countries with common ties can sensibly represent this on their flags (he gives Central America, Scandinavia and Africa a particularly rought time on this issue).Ted Kaye's NAVA e-pamphlet is much more pragmatic, listing examples of good designs, bad designs and sensible exceptions to the rules. For instance, the lettering prohibition is a really good idea; flags are graphical, not textual. Who can forget the old Rwandan flag with the letter "R" in the middle?!? However, there are execptions. The NAVA site cites Colorado, but there are also words used in pictogram or code which I think are sensible exceptions. NAVA has also run online polls for the best state/provincial and civic flags in its region. You might quibble with the precise order, but any sensible person looking at one flag each from the top 10, middle 10 and botton 10 can see the difference. The problem with complicated flags is that they don't show up well, especially since we only have 107 x 71 pixels to work with. If you want to see extreme versions of this, look at quartered (or worse!) heraldic arms. Pretty soon, you can't identify one from the next because they are so complex. Furthermore, if you actually try to make a flag from cloth, it gets very difficult to do. Infinite Loop, there will always be a demand for complicated flags, don't worry. After some thought (and occasional posts and telegrams to flag requestors here), I decided to set up another flag service in my home region of the International Democratic Union. I don't think we are in competition, since I like to keep things simple. I've added a link to this forum because I think some people will be better served here. |
