The War of 1812 was an American invasion of Canada and American was the one who declared war on Britain. I don't see how this can really be classified a "defensive" action. It only became threatening to America's independence because they botched it and made the British mad.

South Korea and South Vietnam did not actually ask for help. They were simply important to American interests since Kim Il Sung's taking over South Korea was a security threat to its huge investment in Japan, while in Vietnam's case there was the ill-conceived Domino Theory which led the Americans to believe that South Vietnam was vital to check the spread of Communist influence - which, evidently, was wrong.

And just FYI, both of the governments there that America propped up and defended were very nasty dictatorships, in fact Ngo Dinh Diem's atrocities were what fuelled the huge recruitment rate for the Viet Cong. Buddhist monks were setting themselves on fire to protest Ngo's government... if that's not a sign he's up to some nasty things I don't know what is.

It is a matter of fact that neither was imperialist, but both were considerably hypocriticial from a nation which screams "YAY!! FREEDOM!!! LIBERTY!!! WHOO!!" as it goes around bombing people.

Why would I despise the police? Just because they use the same kind of structure doesn't mean they are the same. Police exist for preserving law and order. Armies exist for keeping the powerful powerful and for killing people. Very different things here.

Err... it's not true that only the US Army could get to Aceh. Indonesia's own army was carrying out relief operations, and I was in Singapore at the time and the media there was also covering how the Singapore army was airlifting supplies and things to Aceh and setting up medical clinics and things. They probably did more than the American army.

"I.E. peacekeeping in Haiti, Liberia, Afghanistan, East TImor, Kosovo, Bosnia,"

But they aren't the priority, are they? Some good actions, and I'm not saying all those were good, does not excuse the massive destruction and death dealt out elsewhere.

And no, I do not believe any organisation dedicated to war can have good values, honour, or a code.

Ou yourself admitted you do not know much about military history as I do, so I suggest you read up before discussing it w*Republic of Govindia again.

I should've been more specific. I am an expert in almost all aspect sof military history, strategy, armaments, and pretty much anything else related to war. My only weaknesses are ancient warfare and wars since...oh, 1990. I can assure you, however, that I know at least as much as you regarding most aspects of the militaries of the world and their histories.

I apologize for not being specific; I am quite the expert and have 'read up' on it since I was about 2 yrs. old.

1812 was not imperialist in any way, nor was korea or viet nam

You're joking, right? 1812: while the British were partly to blame, we demanded that they pull out of the NW territories (the midwest) so that we could move in, slaughter the natives, and colonize. That was the fault of both parties.

In Korea, an unfounded fear of an 'international commie conspiracy' prompted us to bring the UN into a miserable trench war. We were terrified of the prospect that communism could fall across Asia. China and North Korea were already under socialist governments, and we couldn't allow economic equality to hit any more of the continent.

In Vietnam, the nation was pulled out of French colonial rule by communist rebels, and they quickly seized control. A Catholic dictator took the south, and installed himself as the ruler. When hostilities began and an internal communist revolt took place in the South (Viet Cong), we realized tha the majority of the people wanted a unified nation under Ho Chi Minh. We quickly began to carpet bomb our 'allies' and totally annihilate the population of both countries. All inall, 14 percent of Vietnam's population were killed, the majority due to our massive bombing, herbicidal, and mine-laying operations all over the area.

Finally, Nixon saw that it was hopeless, and 'Vietnamization' (which Iraq is engaging in, btw) failed miserably. The weak ARVN were destroyed by overwhelming northern forces, and the two countries were finally unified under a government acceptable to the majority.
