PART ONE: THE MAY DAY REVOLUTION AND THE FORMATION OF THE RED ARMY: The May Day Revolution is seen by many as the beginning of the Krech Civil War. On the First of May, 1920, thousands of workers began a revolution that would destroy Krechzianko's old order and replace it with a new, proletarian system... The revolution began early in the morning. Georgi Petrechna had just rode in from the South, and he was sitting in a hotel in the heart of Krechenstadt. Many leaders from the PLPK were in the city; they knew that a revolution was about to begin. The revolt was half-planned and half-spontaneous. Labor Party cadres had been inciting anger in the public for weeks, and a series of night arrests and brutally-ended protests had galvanized the populace into a left-wing frenzy. On May Day, the anniversary of the Haymarket Riot in the United States, they released their anger at the government. First, a few hundred steelworkers went on strike in honor of the holiday. Many were, in actuality, working as inciters for the Party, and they spent the early part of the day engaging in minor acts of violence against nearby police oficers and Quzak cavalrymen. At roughly 9:00 AM on May Day, one of these cavalry troops opened fire on a nearby striker, and all hell quickly broke loose. The steelworkers rushed the police, and a melee broke out. Nearby laborers and poor residents witnessed the battle in progress and joined in, eventually outnumbering and killing the entire unit of Quzaks and constables. The government called in several companies of reserve troops, who feebly attempted to cordon off a defensive zone and fight the rebels. Many deserted and were shot while escaping, while others mutinied against their officers. Only a few dozen soldiers were ready to fight back when they began to combat the strikers. More troops entered Krechenstadt quickly, however, and it soon became a city-wide slaughter. Units of Red Guards, PLPK militants, took to the streets armed with rifles and stolen machineguns. Their rightist counterparts, the White Guards, began to form in Krechenstadt's outskirts, leading to bitter violence as the two sides met. BThe entire afternoon was a pitched battle for control, while Georgi Petrechna and the PLPK leaders led their 'soldiers' from various makeshift HQs all over the capital. By nightfall, much of the city's populace was in revolt, with soldiers deserting by the thousands and giving their weapons to the cause. At 7:00 PM, a battalion of Red Guards seized the main armory outside the city, in what is now the airport. They stole thousands of boxes of rifles and machineguns, and trucks were brought in to take ammunition to the Red fighters. Artillery, however, had been positioned northeast of Krechenstadt, across the Triyekska River. The guns bombarded Red stronghold all over the city, with little ability to resist. Petrechna and his military organizer, Ivan Steinberg, knew that the guns would hold back Red forces and allow government troops to counterattack in the coming days. So, just after midnight on the 2nd, a huge force of Red Guards and mutinous soldiers crossed the river via the last open bridge. Several trains, hastily covered with machineguns and cannons and filled with troops, sped to the north and blew apart government positions. They kept the bridge safe from destruction as more troops crossed. By dawn, the entire city of Krechenstadt was under Red control. The last 'White' strongholds surrendered by noon that same day. Georgi Petrechna immediately ordered all banks and businesses shut down; the Red Guards often engaged in more violence than necessary to undergo this task. Hundreds of bankers and upper-class citizens were killed or tortured. Petrechna formed a new government in the city to restore order: the People's Socialist Republican Council. Their first official decree was made on the 2nd of May. They announced the formation of a new 'Red Army' to assist the rebellions in progress all over the country. In Konstantios, Nezghornnyy, and other cities, local Soviets took control, often with extreme violence. Peasants in the countryside were also fighting against the government, notably the People's Central Peasant Army, an armed force organized in the Dubravnik Mountains. However, the vast majority of land in Krechzianko was still under White control, and there would be a long war ahead for the nation. As the King and his family rode an armored train to Bergerhaus, Red forces were already seizing the city of Dubravnik. Meanwhile, the White army was preparing to retake all of these cities under General Pylkidski, who was arming a sizeable force in the south of Krechzianko. |

PART TWO: WHITE OFFENSIVES In the first days following the revolution, Ivan Steinberg (the new Grand Commissar of the Red Army) immediately went about reforming his forces into a modern military. He formed Red Guards and peasants into regiments, establishing a proper organization system and appointing commanders for every unit. His troops began to set out from Krechenstadt, quickly seizing important railways between Red-controlled cities. The capital, as well as Dubravnik, were considered major strategic positions. Steinberg mobilized fleets of armored trains, essentially transport trains with bolted-on plating and cannons. These vehicles protected all major rail junctions and helped infantry and cavalry when attacking White positions. Steinberg's first major test as a commander came early in May, when General Pylkidski finally had a strong enough force to attack Krechenstadt. This assault, since known as the 'Pylkidski Offensive', was a masterful combination of well-planned strategy and skillful tactical knowledge. The first White elements struck out from Nieverovka on the 8th of May, as the Red Army was just being issued with guns and basic uniforms. The Reds set up hasty trenches and barbed-wire positions south of the capital. White troops attacked directly, with a close-combat massacre resulting in the center of the wide battle line. In the west, Quzak cvalrymen wheeled around Red positions, entering Krechenstadt on several ocassions. They were turned back repeatedly, however, thanks to the large number of machineguns employed by Steinberg's troops. White casualties mounted for days; General Pylkidski repeatedly begged the new Royalist government (located in Nezghornnyy) for reinforcements, only to be turned down. His forces were thus remobilized as the long battle continued; he shifted several divisions to surround and destroy Dubravnik. His men were attacked by the People's Central Peasant Army, or PCPA, constantly as they marched northwest. Eventually they were able to surround the city and cut off rail contact. Thus began to siege of Dubravnik. Fighting in the east was going badly for the Whites. They were being cut to ribbons by skilled socialist bombardments, so the order for a retreat was finally called on the 15th. Several corps of well-trained White troops pulled back to Nieverovka while the Krechenstadt-Dubravnik railway was heavily contested. A few days later, the Royalists' army near Dubravnik was forced to pull out, but they were still in a position to assault the city at any time. The Red Army dug in once again and licked its wounds. Sidebar: Armies of the War - The Red Army The Red Army was a strange force, large and motivated but brittle. The Reds were well-organizedm their General a skilled commander and a master of strategy. Ivan Steinberg was a remarkable leader, able to create an entire army in a week and turn it into an unmatched military in a year. He utilized all sorts of modern weapons, notably the machinegun. Such guns were in universal use by 1920, but his troops' skilled use of the weapon defeated countless White offensives. He was also a fan of armored cars and trains; mobile warfare was the only way to defeat a well-equipped and -trained force such as the one he opposed. Trains were of major importance in Krechzianko, and whichever side controlled the trans-Krech railway controlled the lifeblood of the nation. As a result, the Red Army's main objective was the protection of this railroad, and, when things got rough, the seizure of it. Steinberg himself traveled by train for the war's duration, preferring to lead from a mobile platform. Planes, too, were employed to great effect. They observed enemy movement and frequently attacked infantry formations. The morale effects of aircraft were unmeasurable; White troops often fled at the very sight of a fighter plane. More important to morale, though, were the People's Cadres and SekPa units. The Cadres were squads of laborers and union leaders, who fought with and motivated the troops. They aided morale by reminding soldiers what they were fighting for. Alongside these units were the secret police, or SekPa. These soldiers, clad in leather jackets and jackboots, urged soldiers to fight on with threats of execution. They often shot any men attempting to retreat, and this really had a negative overall effect. So, the Red Army was a strong one, not suffering from the factionalism and greed of it enemies. High morale and fighting spirit won the war, and it was posessed by the Reds in lage quantities. |

PART THREE: WAR ON ALL FRONTS By mid-1920, both sides had taken heavy casualties and were busily trying to redeplot in preparation for more fighting. As the two main armies were being organized, the political struggle for Krechzianko was really beginning to heat up. Both groups bombarded the populace with propaganda and threats, trying despereately to win over the people's hearts. The Reds promised land and food, while the Whites used a patriotic theme to propel their agenda. They called the socialists 'Atheistic Robbers' on many posters, while their enemies referred to the Whites as 'Bourgeois Warmongers'. Planes dropped leaflets on strategically important villages constantly. This was was nothing like the First World War, which had ended only two years prior. There was no real frontline in this conflict, just many areas of intense combat and political rivalry. Soldiers were rarely organized into real units per se; often, a group of politically similar Krechs would merely band together and form a vigilante 'Guard' unit. The Red Guards were Georgi Petrechna's enforcers, and made sure that there were no rebellions or Royalist instigators in Red territory. The White Guards had the same objective: to destroy communist influence in Krechzianko. During June of 1920, General Steinberg and Central Command began to build a single, huge army, the objective of which would be to annihilate the South of Krechzianko. They would burn villages, shell cities into the dirt, and destroy all white units in the area. After several weeks of preparation, the force of several hundred thousand men was waiting in Krechenstadt. They struck out on their new campaign early in July, when the weather was perfect for an assault. Ivan Steinberg and his aides rode in a specialized armored train alongside the advancing army, from which they could command all military operations. The "People's Red Army of Peasants, Workers, and Sailors", as the new military was called, seized Nieverovka after several days of bitter combat. They rolled over the city with armored cars, cavalry, and tanks, pressing on the attack as sson as it was taken. The main White army under General Pylkidski was forced into a mad retreat through the Dubravnik Mountains, hoping to create a defensive position along the three cities of Bulgriov, Bergerhaus, and Uberstadt. His army suffered heavy casualties as the Red cavalry force, consisting mainly of Quzak deserters, drove into the mountains and cut off supply lines. By September, Bulgriov and Uberhaus were being shelled, and the White Army was falling back even further. The Reds couldn't stop, lest their enemies re-organize. By now, the Red Army was a modern fighting force, with uniforms, unit names, and a single style of armament. They were brave and dedicated troops. The Whites were increasingly suffering from factionalism and infighting, while several differen't 'Green' armied began to spring up all over Krechzianko. These political movements each had their own objective, many of the striving for national self-determination of specific regions. One of the largest was the Anarchosyndicalist Liberation Army of the Quzaks, led by the eccentric General Wilhelm Makhovski. This small guerrilla army struggled for power all over Central and Southern Krechzianko, though it made little headway overall. Sidebar: Armies of the War - The Interventionists As war was raging all over the country, Interventionist Armies began to arrive with increasing frequency. All along the Krech coast, forces from around the world landed at major ports with hopes of assisting the Whites. -An American Marine division, led by none other than 'Black Jack' Pershing, seized several Northern villages and captured thousands of Red supporters. -The current Free Pacific State of Maer, a monarchist nation, landed a sizeable expedition along the South, with troops occupying Nezghorrnnyy and marching north to assist General Pylkidski. They had a fairly major effect on the war, as it was the largest interventionist force to arrive. -The FPS nation of Zalebano sent guns, trainers, and equipment of all kinds to the Whites, who were desperately in need of logistical help. -Govindia sent the GEF (Gov. Expeditionary Force) which aided the Whites a great deal, especially in the West (Bulgriov, Uberhaus, etc.). -The Packilvanian Theocracy, which at the time occupied Neo Arcadia, sent forces to the North in hopes of increasing its power in the EP. The Pack army was significant, although it was much smaller than those of Maer and Govindia. -Blanchettia's "NRB" sent a full regiment of troops to aid the Whites; it landed in the South early in the war. Upon learning that the British were sending aid to the Whites, they switched sides, earning the nickname "the Flip-Flopper Brigade" by their new allies. Thye eventually withdrew in 1921. -Vladistock Island sent aid, with different factions sending help to each side in the Civil War. [Note: Vladistock's history has not yet been outlined, so I'm basically giving a general description] The Whites clearly had more outside support, and this let them hold on to much of Krechzianko longer than they could have otherwise. So, by Fall of 1920, the two main armies were fighting in the South of Krechzianko. Political factions struggled for control all over the rest of the country, from Konstantios to Nezghornnyy. The conflict was raging on just as it had been three months previous, but now it was getting attention from the rest of the world. |
