I'd assume not because then they could just protest being institutionalized all day long... Or they'd have to write long arduous legislation which would have to create an overseeing committee to modify the bill regularly, passing it through another group to verify its accuracy; if it passes, it passes, but if it fails, then it goes back to the former committee for rewrite and then the process repeats itself until either the bill passes or the committees are reported by some sort of supervising branch which would have to pass the complaint through another punitive juggernaut somewhere else which would have to vote on the punishment in a similar manner that the first two committees vote on the time alloted for protests which fall in some draconian legal measure. Upon passing, the punishment would go through to wherever it'd go and by the time punishment actually comes around, the first two committees have been either replaced or retired. ![]() (If I am correct, I'm surprised FPS doesn't just implode from all this bureaucracy.) |

Which is more than likely, but there's another committee which votes in replacement members of the former. Then there's a backup committee for aforementioned replacing committee whose members are voted in by previous committee per laws of the original committee. ![]() EDIT: The two replacement committees are overseen by the Supervising Committee who reports to a sub-committee in the sub-branch of an outer extension of the Department of Redundancy Department, whose first law was to opt for the second 'department' in their name; a second bill would have introduced a third department in there, but there was a disaster that day so it never reached vote |

Oopsie. I'd forgotten, a couple of posts back, that a whole week had passed between the Missing Persons/Hobo Attack debacle, so it would have no effect on why Karen was tired. The worst part was that I actually remembered later in the same post. I've fixed it. |

While English has been the vernacular language of Kandarin since it was adopted as such in the 1890s, it is only the latest in a long string of at least five Kandarinese languages. Over the last four millenia, the predominant language was Telessa, or simply Elvish, although some call it Dark Elvish to distinguish it from the languages of surface Elves. Elvish itself consisted of several dialects associated with specific time periods, known as First, Second, and Third Cycle Elvish. These are related in much the same way as Old, Middle, and Early Modern English are related: Gradual changes that are clearly identifiable as distinct dialects when the history of the language is examined as a whole. Anna's comment was in Third Cycle Elvish, the most recent. Third Cycle Elvish is very demanding. Unlike English, in which a word can have many meanings, words in Third Cycle convey much more exact, specific and detailed meaning. There is little room for ambiguity. In a sense, the vague, literalist wordplay the Kandarinese constantly engage in when conversing in English is as much an outgrowth of their linguistic roots as their culture. A phrase in English might be equivalent to any of two or three dozen phrases in Telessa, each of which lays out a different exact meaning, so Kandarinese English speakers may speak the phrase while retaining the freedom to 'mean' any of the possible variations thereof. It is not their fault, they tell themselves, if foreign English speakers did not make their meaning more clear. The government's adoption of English as an official language has remained controversial to the present day. Its proponents point out the advantages in foreign affairs, trade, and Elven-Human relations that use of a human language confers. Its detractors claim that the aforementioned freedom of ambiguity was the reason for the change all along. Still, it has become clear at this point that there can be no going back. Nearly all of the population now speaks English as a first language. Despite this, Third Cycle Elvish still sees some use. Practically all elves and most middle- and upper-caste humans make a point of learning it, due to several modern applications. Foremost, it is the chief language of magic. Although any language would suffice for the verbal aspects of spells (as the real primary ingredient of magic is pure will) the exact and specific nature of Telessa reduces critical errors. This becomes more essential as spells become more complex and risky. Suppose a mage is attempting to summon a demon that is an ally of his Lord to assist in scrying on his enemies. A great deal of care is needed in order to avoid minor but fatal errors, such as accidentally summoning a very similar demon who is still willing to help but whose idea of assistance involves repainting the summoning mage's study in what it sees as a more aesthetically pleasing hue using the mage's organs as a paint base. While this is an extreme example, use of a specific language like Third Cycle Elvish helps greatly to prevent such mistakes. Beyond magic, this language is also often used in poetry, music, theater, and suprisingly enough, cryptography. --- To understand just how specific Telessa is, let's take apart Anna's comment and look at it word for word. "I am an agent of the Kandarin Federation." "Nevya toh din tomahla Kandanirya." Nevya- First-person feminine singular pronoun. This word lacks the diminutive form (with it, it would be Nevyaha) and so identifies the speaker as an adult. Only a grown woman would use Nevya. A little girl would not, unless rebelling against her parents or (as is the case here) bluffing a stranger. In either case, it would still stand out as unusual. toh din- The meaning of these words actually comes very close to "am an", but a more exact translation is "am the", as it declares the speaker to hold a special and unique status. "Am an" can be more accurately expressed by the similar toh dith. tomahla- This is a very old word, dating back to First Cycle Elvish, but has changed its meaning over time. Initially, the word simply described an assassin. In Second Cycle Elvish, the word had (for a variety of societal reasons) devolved to become a joke, exaggerating the danger of any unknown person in a humorous manner. (For example, "Menka toyo dithi tomahla!" or roughly translated, "Watch out for that girl, she's probably an assassin!") In Third Cycle, that ambiguity had borne fruit: tomahla had come to mean any agent, with a stated denial of any additional information on the nature of the agent's service. Kandanirya- Possessive, meaning "of Kandarin". Specifically, the ending carries a kind of possessive that states that the person or thing being described belongs in a very strong and immutable manner to the word that carries the form. When applied to people, it indicates unbreakable, resolute loyalty. A full English translation of Anna's words would look something like this: "I am a special agent of the Kandarin Federation, on a special mission. Don't be fooled by my childish appearance, as I am intelligent and wise beyond my apparent years and thus am suited to this mission. I won't tell you what my mission is or what my exact status is, but I will tell you that I'm absolutely loyal to my superiors and my country. I have a good position and am quite happy with the system, so nothing you say will make me betray it." Unfortunately, since Telessa isn't widely taught outside of Kandarin, Loop's agent probably missed all of that. |

And while we are on the topic of languages, I give you: A short primer on the Dannistrian language In an almost opposite vein to Third Cycle Elvish, the Dannistrian language can be extremely hard even for seasoned veteren. Words can often carry multiple meanings, words can have similar pronounciations to other words with no relation, and there may not even be a word for a given concept, resorting in loaning words from other languages or describing the concept in a lengthy phrase, itself not very specific at times. One example is the Dannistrian word "Pah'fah". Now, on it's own it could mean anything. Literally it means "path", "trail", "road", "route", or "line". However, you would be hard pressed to know which one a Dannistrian is talking about without listening to the context of the rest of the conversation. Also, it can be the basis of a few compound words, which helps to narrow down the meaning. Although socially, a word on it's own will be thought of as having a standard meaning when spoken or writen on it's own. To use the above example, "Pah'fah" on it's own will be taken to mean a railroad. "Pah'fah-suu" literally translates to "Small path" or most contexts will be understood to mean "Light rail" or a "Tramway". "Pah'fah Su'ron" would be a "Metro" or "Subway" (Literally "Under path"). "Pah'fah-daah" (Great/Large path) would mean an intercity express railroad or mainline. "A'ou'toh Pah'fah-daah" (Auto path) is otherwise known as a Highway or Motorway. "Pah'fah hill'eh" (Yellow path/line) What is often painted onto the platform of a station and what you are expected to stand behind! And to confuse you further there may be premutations of a spelling of a word. This is because the regional accent may render it differently. Some places shorten the first "ah" sound in "Pah'fah", leading to "Pa'fah". There are other examples, but that is a quick example just to give you the general idea. |

Okay, ball time. According to diplomatic protocol, regular guests are entered and seated first, then dignitaries are announced, with the President and his family arriving last. Terasu, I'm presuming that Hiro and Shigeru are formal dignitaries and will enter and be announced whenever you decide they should. It's your call. Eloise, Kantar, Khazardi and Kodachi are dignitaries and will be announced. Matt will be arriving with his father and siblings. I'm going to assume that everyone else is a regular invited guest and is either already in the Presidential ballroom being seated or is already seated (according to the whims of their respective RPers). Incidentally, if anyone wants to add a new character to the ball, now's the time to do it. |

Let me describe some of the problems about joining. In Hungary there is only one reason behind a student changing school mid-year: bad marks. For example, my classmate had bad marks in almost every subject, so in October he started to attend to another school. But if you start the school year in another school, than it has an impression that your previous school was worse than your current. So maybe this university is a very liberal one and the students wont discriminate, but in Lazlowia, like in Hungary, those who change school during the year are always looked with suspicion. So don't expect me for a long time. And the thread is too long and I can't read everything, so I don't know what happened so far. Also, this university is a europian or an american type? |

Laz, I won't try to force you, but just let me say a couple of things. The fact you've not read everything does not matter at all. This thread is eternal, but it's mostly made of regular conversations between regular teenagrs. The fact one month ago Arian complained because the computer was broken or Anna whined because the shower was too hot could well have been important at the time, but it cannot (and won't) influence your RP anyhow. That said, the ACTUAL plot is very simple: the Shiro guys have been invited to the Blue House in order to attend a Ball. Now, they're here. Very soon, they'll find out one f them is the son of the FPS President. Period. I suppose there is nothing else anyone needs to go on. About the "I would be a terrible student if I jump in now"... well... I understand the problem. But Shiro is the elite school in The East Pacific. Probably your student's parents have tried for months to win him access because the school's administration was a bit skeptical about accepting him because he hadn't enough references. Or probably your student has just left a coma. Or perhaps his teachers have suggested his parents to move him away from his school not because of bad marks but because he was too skilled for the school he was attaending / he had students who wanted to kill him / was allergic to the particular concrete used for the walls. In a word: if you want to jump in... you can. Without having to wait for the next year... which will probably start in 2027, considering THIS school year has begun on last May? June? and we've just reached the winter holidays...

I've just found out that many character's parents are some politicaly important person. Now the problem is, that my character won't be original. I don't know the name yet, but it will be László probably. Now, in Lazlowia the capitalist countries are looked at suspicion, and even the wealthy members of the party won't attend their children to a foreign school. (There are also other reasons, but thats another thing.) But our hero's father, a general of the army, is unfortunately an idealist. He thinks that his son will be a bridge between Lazlowia and the capitalists. László now hates his father, becouse he now have to attend to a foreign school, rigth in the middle of the school year, and he has to leave his friends. Well, László will probably gets corrupted and won't be the "bridge" as his father envisioned. But thats another story.
In Hungary(and Lazlowia) this happened only in the 1930's. |

Done. FYI, people, room description. The room is primarily split into three areas. A dance floor, on the left side of the room (looking in from the door), a group of about thirty ten-person tables (on the right side from the door), a podium (at the rear of the room directly across from the door), and a small stage (at the rear left of the room). Though there are a number of entrances and exits, the only one that appears open to the visitors is the main exit (though several are marked as 'emergency exits' and could probably be used). Didn't feel like actually writing a speech, hope ya don't mind.. |
