Over 5 million people have marched on the streets of Pyongjing in protest of a possible re-naming of Mao island by the Liang administration. Many of the protesters were waving placards reading 'KEEP MAO ISLAND UNCHANGED' and 'DOWN WITH LIANG! UP WITH MAO ISLAND'. Speaking at one of the biggest demonstrations in recent times, Marxist Party leader Jonnie Ting excited the crowd by openly denouncing President Liang as a revisionist for attempting to re-name Mao island into a more neutral sounding name, avoiding any political connections with the left. Education groups have called for more regulation of Bai Lung's self-financing post-secondary sector. This follows an inquiry yesterday that blamed a former dean for over-enrolment at two of Pyongjing Polytechnic University's private colleges, BLCTV reports. Addressing the Lower House panel meeting, the president of the Professional Teachers' Union Tony Feng suggested the government provide a student subsidy to help these institutions maintain quality education. He said institutions have to struggle to survive rather than strive to improving quality and he suggested that the government give students regular subsidy. Feng said they propose that each students should be given a subsidy of BL$3,000 every year. President Liang opposes any subsidies given to students and calls for 'entrepreneurial-based solutions'. Critics of President Liang's blunt statement have accused him of being insensitive towards the less well off. |

Full stories available on www.newblctvnews.bl (Articles also available in English, Dannistrian and Dovakhanese)![]() President Liang proposes 50 cent tax increase on all high alcohol drinks for 2013/14 budget. President Liang has proposed a 50 cent tax increase on every drink with an alcoholic content of 25% ABV or above for this years budget. In recent times, the problem of drinking has plagued much of the country with reports of increased violence against women by 15% during 2010/11. The village of Cheng Lung suffered the worst of drinking problems especially with the drinking contests held during Bai Lungese Buy Lung Day! Day. Participants drink 3 bottles of Wújí (无极) or Limitless in the shortest time and without vomiting any of the drink's contents. Due to it's high alcohol by volume of 65%, participants often die of alcoholic poisoning. Previous attempts by the Assembly of Bai Lung to ban, restrict or severely tax the notorious drink have been struck down by the High Court Justices amd such laws were characterised as being unconstitutional. President Liang has told in his weekly fireside radio chat that the tax increase will apply to all drinks instead of Wuji specifically. Such plans is said to raise BL$500 million to BL$1.2 billion in revenue. The High Court has threatened to strike down portions of the budget, again calling the increased taxes on alcohol as being unconstitutional. |

Todays Headline from New BLCTV News. Full stories available on www.newblctvnews.bl (Articles also available in English, Dannistrian and Dovakhanese)![]() Labour Party fillibusters alcohol tax increase proposal. The Labour Party has lead a fillibuster on President Liang's proposals to increase the tax on every alcohol beverages with an alcohol by volume of 25% or over for the 2013/14 budget. Labour leader Li An Ying complained that the President's proposals do not go far enough as it only addresses the societal problems with regards to alcoholic beverages. Citing environmental issues, former PM Li has called for the Liang administration to levy 5 BL cents for each 750-milli-litre wine bottle, and 10 BL cents per 1-litre glass bottle on top of the 50 cent increase. Conservative backbenchers are likely to vote against the levy on bottles as well as President Liang's original proposals. |
