More than 150 Conservative lawmakers have signed a joint letter, urging Prime Minister Lin to end the filibustering of voter ID laws, as well as to introduce fillibuster reform. The deputy Chairperson of the Conservative, Veronica Yeh Shi-Ing, said it was time to take action to halt the delaying tactics by opposition Labour Party MLAs pushing to kill voter ID laws. The Labour Party claim that ID laws only serve to deliberately reduce voter turnout and would hit the poorest and the elderly voters. Despite their concerns, the poor and elderly voters had casted their vote to the Conservative Party in the 2012 legislative elections with a margin of 55-44 and 89-10 respectively. The Democatice Party decided not to sign the letter, despite opposing the filibustering. Legislator Tony Hu-hee said that its members did not want to put "unnecessary pressure" on the Prime Minister. |

A senior editor of the Conservative think-tank, the Enterprise Institute, has resigned from his position after releasing a report linking race and intelligence. Kwang Dahoe had wrote for the think tank's monthly magazine since July 2009, writing highly provocative essays, including linking women and jobs. But it was his most recent editorial piece in which he claims that Dannistrian people are less intelligent than their Bai Lungese counterparts. He also suggested that having a thicker skull has lead to impaired learning from Dannistrians hence possessing a lower IQ than Bai Lungese. Mr Kwang had apologised to the media for publishing the article but declined to make a direct apology to the Dannistrian people themselves.

Public confidence in President Liang has fallen to its lowest level since he took office, according to a survey. The Naational Sentiment Measurement Index, compiled by the Polytechnic of Bai Lung Public Opinion Program, was down 15 percent from April's figure to 55.2 out of 100 this month, BLCTV reports. A spokesman for the program said the findings suggest that Bai Lungese people are increasingly unhappy with the social environment and the administration's handling of public policy. Some of the main concerns which explains the low ratings includes the slashing of taxes for the most wealthiest by the Liang administration, the reduction of public expenditure by 2.5% of GDP over 5 years and opposition to raising the minimum wage. |

Jeremiah Tao, Bai Lung's superstar chef, has brought a petition containing 650,000 signatures to the Assembly of Bai Lung in an effort to bring healthier lunches for school children. Mr Tao, who is best known for his TV series Chops Ahoy!, is pleading to lawmakers to pass legislation which would ban any foods that contain more 50% of saturated fat and salt, both of which leads to serious health problems in later life such as strokes and heart attacks. In 2009, only 18% of children are considered to be obese. Last year, 29% are now classified as obese. Whilst Labour MLAs and Senators are generally supportive of Mr Tao's campaign, several Conservative MLAs are highly critical of Mr Tao's petition. Backbencher Darrell Ai Sha was highly vocal against Mr Tao's efforts and posted a Birdy, calling Mr Tao a 'Chenite' who doesn't support freedom of choice for schools to run their own affairs. However, some Conservative MLAs criticised Mr Ai for encouraging children to eat as many deep fried foods as they can in protest of Mr Tao's promotion of healthy eating. Mr Tao himself said he is not allied with the Labour Party and does not wish to treat the country's obesity epidemic as a left or right issue. |

Former Interim Administrator Kobayashi Taro has tried to commit suicide by attempting to hang himself with a towel in a bathroom at a jail at the Pyongjing Central Penitentiary. He was prevented by a guard and medical personnel were immediately called to check his condition. No abnormalities were found. Mr Kobayashi is serving a 35 year sentence for raping a woman. In April, he was transferred to a prison hospital in Dacheng from a public hospital in Pyongjing, where he had spent several months being treated for depression and other health problems. Doctors have recommended home care for the 54-year-old, who has been diagnosed with manic depression, an eating disorder and other conditions, according to medical documents released by his office. But the justice ministry has said home care is not an option for inmates. They added Mr Kobayashi does not qualify for immediate parole on medical grounds because he can receive treatment at the prison hospital. Kobayashi's family and supporters have angrily accused the government of President Liang of making a politically motivated decision to deny him medical parole. Kobayashi was convicted of raping a woman, forcing her to become pregnant and eventually had to abort the fetus inside of her. |
