Plans to hold a naked bicycle race in the city Choi have been called off due to the Mayor's socially conservative policies. Mayor Ling Da Shui, a Conservative, had withdrawn the licence that was requested by the Race 4 Cancer Foundation after Mr Ling was informed that over 5,000 participants, both male and female, would ride in their bicycles without any clothing. In addition to the cancelling of the race, Mr Ling has called for the arrests of the organisers for inciting public indeceny for attempting to hold the 100 km race in his city. Race 4 Cancer Foundation post a quick response to the withdrawal, claiming they would plan an alternative which would go around the highly conservative city. |

The House Committee on Education and the Workforce have shelved plans to introduce a school voucher scheme nationwide from 2017 onwards. The Conservative dominated committee unanimously voted to shelve plans 'indefinitely' after members within their own party objected to the Government's plans to transfer state funding of education to private companies. One Conservative MLA has claimed that they risk being voted out in the next Legislative election if they vote in favour of the voucher scheme. Proponents claims that the voucher scheme would incentivise children to work harder and allow parents to pick a school of their choice. The plan would also encourage competition amongst schools, prompting them to increase education standards. Detractors from the political left claim that Prime Minister Lin's plans would cost the taxpayer BL$5 billion, as well as denying children the right to basic education. A spoksesperson to PM Lin has claimed that the Prime Minister will not abandon the proposals completely and would introduce education reform later this year. |

The Liang administration will appropriate an extra BL$1 billion in preparation for super Typhoon Sulai. The spending will mostly cover reinforcing roofs of local businesses and civil homes as well as adding sandbags to lessen some of the flooding cause by Sulai. Sulai is moving toward Mao island at about 22km/h and could narrowly skip or make landfall in the island's East sometime between late today and tomorrow morning. Soulai's route evokes painful memories of 2007 when Cyclone No'vas lashed the island, leaving 1,200 dead and costing over BL$500 million of damages. Edited by Bai Lung, Jul 14 2013, 07:52:53 AM.

More than 1 million people were evacuated from Port Sung and neighboring Zhongjiang as the typhoon approached, with 15,000 soldiers deployed to carry out relief work if needed. Authorities in Port Sung said almost 10,000 ships were called back to port. Todays Headline from New BLCTV News. Full stories available on www.newblctvnews.bl (Articles also available in English, Dannistrian and Dovakhanese)![]() Authorities shut down fake museum. A museum in Pyongjing that contained an array of fake exhibits, including a wooden chair decorated with cartoonish characters billed as a King Kim X dynasty artifact, has been shuttered by authorities. The museum, built in Eastern Pyongjing at a cost of BL$200 million, has "no qualification to be a museum as its collections are fake," a local Alderman said. The Museum of pre-Junta Bai Lung has been closed while its founders have been placed under investigation, after local residents accused them of wasting money. Pictures posted by users of ThrushXpress shows a chair decorated with cartoon animals, including a red snake wrapping itself around the chair legs as well as cartoonish characters. The museum had displayed the item as a King Chen X dynasty relic. Several items lining the museum's 15 exhibition halls were supposedly signed by King Kim III, ruler of Bai Lung from 1877-1883. But the signatures only included Chinese characters brought in by the Chenite regime after it took over from the Nationalists in 1962. The museum's owner, millionaire and socialite Fu Jiawen, reportedly developed a reputation for agreeing to "buy everything brought to him." Locals living near the museum in Sanpu village said Fu bought more than 10,000 fake exhibits at prices ranging from BL$1 to BL$100. They accused him of dodging land sales taxes and using this extra capital to build the ill-fated museum, which took up a five-hectare site. Bai Lung's antiques market is said to be rife with fakes, earning strong criticisms from multinational companies for a lack of copyright enforcement.

Todays Headline from New BLCTV News. Full stories available on www.newblctvnews.bl (Articles also available in English, Dannistrian and Dovakhanese)![]() Scrap direct election of Senators and MLAs says think-tank. The Electoral Reform Institute (ERI) has called for the abolition of directly elected senators and allow members of city or town councils to elect a Senator, purely dependent on the constituency in which they represent. ERI has claimed on their official blog that a repeal would protect local provinces as the central government has already too much power over local affairs. They also claim special interest groups can directly influence elections under the current system and therefore abolishing the direct election of Senators would prevent unfair influence of future elections under a one person, one vote system. The 50 page report also advocates the abolition of directly elected MLAs and replacing them with councillor elected MLAs. Critics of the repeal often point out that it would be against the prerogative of the public as it would take away the one person, one vote principle and effectively handing it over to 20 to 100 councilors to pick their Senator, many of whom will be members of the Conservatives. They advance the theory that it would result in an all Conservative delegation in the Senate. They also criticised the think-tank's double standards as they object to a directly elected Upper and Lower house chambers but show no qualms about a directly elected council. The ERI report wss also dismissed by some Conservative politicians including Prime Minist Lin, as a gimmick. |

Bai Lung should go down the road to a welfare state, according to a business tycoon. That was the stark warning from Kimyong Properties chairperson Tobey Chen yesterday as he refused to retract earlier remarks in which he called the Secretary of Finance Jack Liang King-Hua 'a socialist' for his economic policies despite being a member of the Conservative Party. Mr Chen has specifically singled out Mr Liang's committment to ring-fence appropriation of public housing, in which he links subsidised public housing and unemployment, insinuating that people are relying too much on the state for handouts. Despite the reduced top income tax rate from 60% to 50%, Mr Chen has blasted Mr Liang for not going for enough in his quest to cut taxes. Mr Chen has called for the abolition of all corporate taxes, all estate taxes, all gift taxes, all capital gains taxes and replace them all with a single 10% flat income tax rate with no personal tax free allowance. Mr Chen has advocated the total defunding of these public housings in order to pay for the tax cuts. Edited by Bai Lung, Jul 19 2013, 03:49:51 AM.

A teenage Nanren monk died after setting himself on fire in the village of Gongjia, in the first such protest for more than 2 months. Kochowk Sonlom, 17, carried out the deadly protest outside the Mogar monastery in northern Bai Lung, Radio Free Bai Lung reported, citing local residents. Sonlom shouted slogans "Freedom for Nanren!" the privately funded broadcaster cited one resident as saying. The self-immolation was the first by a Nanren in the country mainland for ten weeks, the report said, adding that his fellow monks prevented the authorities from taking away Sonlom's body. Some 100 Nanrens have set themselves alight since February 2010 in protests against what they see as oppression by the Bai Lungese government. The Liang administration condemns the acts and blames them on exiled Nanren leader Tausin Giatsu, the 14th Dahniar Laahm, alleging he uses today's to advance 'a dangerous separatist agenda'. But Nanren and human rights groups say the protests are a response to harsh controls on religion in the country. Edited by Bai Lung, Jul 21 2013, 07:53:22 PM.

A father must return his 8-month-old daughter to General Chun Hospital after the High Court ruled the hospital will be the boy's guardian. After a five-hour chamber hearing, the court unanimously ordered that Dolly Chien be returned to the Pyongjing based hospital, where she has been treated for various complications since birth. His father, Derek Chien Chao-wu, complained of his daughter being mistreated by the hospital, claiming the tot has not been provided with a separate ward, is not allowed to eat and that her eyes are damaged. "Her organs are weak and she has skin problems on her back. She was also not allowed to eat." said Chien, adding he is worried Dolly may die in the intensive care unit. The tot was taken to Chien's home so she could attend the birthday party of her five year-old brother. When asked about the court's decision, Chien said his daughter was "taken away by fascists." It is believed that the Hospital Authority has taken the baby back to General Chun. Pyongjing Cluster chief executive Hope Liang said the hospital understands that the family wants to be with Dolly, "but we considered the infant's benefit ... Seeing that the infant suffers from chronic diseases and needs long-term care, we decided to apply for custody rights over her." Liang also emphasized that special care is needed for infants hospitalisrd in the intensive care unit. Such children may be discharged at a suitable time. |

The owner of the Eastern Pyongjing Museum that displayed fake artifacts to an unsuspecting public, will launch an appeal to the High Court in a bid to have his institution re-opened to the public. Fu Jiawen, a socialite whose personal fortune is worth an estimated BL$560 million, financed the BL$200 million project mostly from borrowing from rich relatives and close associates, has complained that the alleged claims of fakery are false. Mr Fu contended that many of the artifacts, including a King Kim X era chair, had cartoonish elements on them because the King was allegedly found of colourful objects and ordered his underlings to construct furnitures of such nature. Bai Lungese history experts dispute this claim, as there is no such evidence that King Kim X loves cartoonish designs on any of his furniture. They also pointed out several ancients signed by past kings were in Simplified Chinese which wasn't adopted in Bai Lung until 1963. The museum remains closed pending the appeal. The case will be heard on the 1st October. |

The highly outspoken wealthy rural property owner caused outrage yesterday when he suggested people aged 40 who still don't own land or housing are useless to Bai Lungese society and advocated a mass extermination of these groups. The charge by Kimyong Properties chairman Tobey Chen shocked lawmakers at a development panel meeting, as well as reporters. Millions of Bai Lungese residents fit Chen's "useless" category. Chen made the charge while defending Conservative backbencher Teddy Heng, whose wife and son once held a stake in farmland that is to be included in the multi-billion-dollar development in New Xinjiang. Heng's wife Teri Xiu Pao-myong sold her 50 percent stake to her brother Xiu jiaun for BL$2.5 million last March but to prevent further claims of conflict of interest by Heng, the Xiu family now say they will put the land up for sale at market price.
Labour Party leader Li An Ying said he was deeply offended by Chen's remarks since he does not currently own land in Bai Lung, although he did acquire a farm in Zhongbao in 2010 but sold it a year later. Hau fired back at the former PM: "I won't retract any wording in my remarks as what I have said is a fact. Would Mr Li admit to confusing opinions with that of hard, cold facts. This is militant Communism attacking free enterprise and personal freedom and responsibility." |

Openly gay Dannistrian film maker and producer Marcel Chen has admitted that making a biopic about late dictator Chen Jong Sun is unlikely to be made in the near future. The 50 year old director has told Complete Film magazine that most studios in Bai Lung would not provide the financial backing of his script because of the current political climate of Bai Lung in which half of the people view the late Stalinist leader as good political figure whilst others see Chen as a tyrant who killed and starved dissidents. Mr Chen also claimed that Dannistrian studios would back his project but he turned down their offer because they wanted him to film the project in English instead of the original Mandarin Chinese dialogue. Because of Chen Jong Sun's controversial legacy, a film about him would be virtually impossible to produce, even 50 years from now, Mr Chen claims. |

The Marxist Party have unveiled a mural that was painted in the front entrance of their HQ in Northern Pyongjing. The mural, which was unveiled by leader Jonnie Ting, shows three men clenching their left fists in the air with the caption: 'People to every person in Bai Lung!'. Some residents, however, were not happy with the mural. In particular, those who have political leanings toward the Conservative Party objected to the mural, telling Mr Ting that communism is not welcome in Bai Lung anymore. Some residents also made references to Thursday's anti-communist effigy burning which resulted in rioting. One resident approached the mural with a tin of white paint. Despite efforts from Ting's bodyguards to prevent him from vandalising the mural, the resident had managed to cover 2/3 of the painting. Offended by the vandalism of the newly unveiled mural, members of the Marxist Party threw punches at the vandal. A violent brawl between both parties took place before police quelled the potential riot and arresting 12 men. Due to vandalism, the mural will not be restored and would be completely painted over. |

A street vendor's plan to fake his own death at the hands of social enforcers failed when he could not play dead long enough in scorching heat of 40 degrees Celsius. More than 20 men claimed the fish ball vendor had been beaten to death in central Port Sung by bylaw enforcement officers, who are tasked with enforcing non-criminal regulations in towns and cities throughout Bai Lung. The Lew Enforcement Bureau have been often accused of abusing their powers since their inception in 2008. More than 500 people soon gathered and over 65 policemen were deployed. The protesters demanded the abolition of the Law Enforcement Bureau while the vendor lay seemingly quietly on a stretcher covered by a sheet. But the heat, many areas have experience some of the highest temperatures since 2005, proved too much for the vendor to take. He suddenly jumped up from the gurney, ran to a nearby drinking well and reportedly said: "The heat is too much for me!" The vendor and five others were detained by police for breach of the peace. |

Todays Headline from New BLCTV News. Full stories available on www.newblctvnews.bl (Articles also available in English, Dannistrian and Dovakhanese)![]() Man cleared of dog cruelty. A former plumber was cleared of cruelty to animals yesterday for using a catapult at his neighbor's dogs after they had frightened him and his family. Don Chen, 50, was acquitted in Chai Hong Magistrate's Court on a charge of cruelty to animals and one count of assault. At Chen's trial, neither a vet nor the dog owner who testified could establish that the wounds on the animals were caused by air gun pellets. The incident happened at New Jian Sha Zui last September 25th. The court heard that Chen, shot a dog because he and his family were frightened when three animals, owned by an elderly couple, suddenly ran toward them. Chen said he went home to get a catapult and launched five stones near the dogs whilst shouting loudly at their direction. He said he had hoped the catapult shots plus his screaming scare off the animals, and was uncertain whether any of the stones hit the dogs. While acquitting Chen on the charges, magistrate Mel Zhou Tse-Xi criticized Mr Chen for using the catapult at the dogs just because he said he was frightened. Referring to a video recorded by his neighbor, Zhou said Chen more likely fired at one of the dogs because he disliked it. There was also a fence in front of the dogs, he added. Mr Chen was also cleared of assault on his neighbour, citing lack of evidence. |

A Conservative with a populist streak, Mr Kim had expressed his skepticism towards the privatisation of these parks. He was asked to withdraw the slur and apologise but Mr Kim refused and was suspended for 5 days. The Upper Senate voted to formally censure the outspoken senator. The Senate Majority leader Merlin Wu warned Mr Kim that racism will not be tolerated in any form. |
