The subject of death remains a taboo in Bai Lungese households, according to a BLCTV News poll. Of the 7,5000 people surveyed in the poll, 93% have said that they do not talk about death in their households whilst 7% say that they do. Although the number of families who avoid talking about death are overwhelmingly high, this is slightly down compared to an identical poll held 5 years ago when 95% of families do not talk about the subject. At the same time, 1 in 5 males surveyed also contemplated suicide, up from 1 in 6 from 5 years ago. This indicates an ever increasing competitive environment in Bai Lung which forces men to take less holidays and more work regardless of their physical or mental health. |

"The Faberge" Wu Fakang has lost his long beard and spent last night in prison after his appeal against a conviction for criminal damage was rejected although his sentence was reduced from 8 months to 7 months. The fiery, self-described socialist activist had appealed for the jail term to be delayed on health grounds but Justice Desmond Pang Jitan said in the District Court he did not have the right to do this. He said Wu could lodge an appeal with the Court of Final Appeal and then seek bail but that he would have to go to jail immediately. Wu's lawyer, Micky Yi Chuwen, indicated an appeal was likely. The judge's decision to cut the 8 month jail term by 7 months means Wu will not miss his treatment for skin cancer. However, he still has to pay the fine of BL$1,500. Wu, known for his highly decorative tattoo on his shaven head as well as his long beard, is convicted for taking part in a protest during a public forum in December 2011. He threw budae jigae at then-President Richard Im in protest to his plans to partially privatise Bai Lung's Postal Service. The plan went through in May 2012 but President Liang went a step further and fully privatise the postal service starting December 2012 and the privatisation phase was completed in February 2014. |

A True Conservative activist has blasted the ideas of having former Conservative leader Stephen T. Ding as the official Conservative candidate for this years election, calling his overall record 'too liberal'. Despite being a stalwart social and fiscal Conservative, Wang Mentao has considered Ding's views as being too liberal, citing his support for bailouts of the banking industry, his support for allowing abortions in situations when the mother's life is at risk and his fluency in many languages. Ding is fluent in Mandarin, Korean, Cantonese and English as well as moderately fluent in Dannistrian.
The self-described hardliner did not name the former Conservative leader by western name but referred to him as Ding Shui Wan, his Chinese name.
Mr Wang has instead endorsed Liang Rendong, a fellow hardline Conservative activist who has called for the total ban on teaching of western culture in all schools. Edited by Bai Lung, Jun 28 2014, 07:06:40 PM.

Although it is still in a prototype stage, research team member Calvin Gao said: "The new software 'Hawkeye 360', will be fully functioning by 2017.' Since 2011, Hawkeye 360 project costed BL$5 million and alloting another BL$5 million will allow the project to run for a further 3 years. Plans to replace an existing national holiday has been rejected by the Conservative controlled Assembly and the Liang administrations. The Democratic Party has put forward a proposal which would see the existing Independence Day event on the 25th May, be replaced with a new national holiday called Democracy Day. According to Democratic Party spokesman Ronnie Yoo, it is not a mere renaming of an existing holiday. At the current state of Independence Day, it is a paid holiday for all public sector employees but offers no holidays for those working in the banking sector. Democracy Day would continue to offer paid holidays for all public sector employees but would designate the event as a bank holiday as well. If enacted, the new holiday would take place from 2015, the next time in which the holiday takes place. Prime Minister Lin and President Liang have released a joint statement rejecting the Democratic Party's proposals, calling the proposals an example of whitewashing the country's fight to bring Independence from dictators. |

The New Fuchau racecourse has gone underway after 1 year of political deadlock. Construction workers turned up at the most eastern area of the New Fuchau National Park to begin digging up grass and chopping down planted trees. The plan, approved by the Conservative controlled Assembly, would downsize the park to 66% of its original area. The Racecourse was due to be opened 4 months ago but security concerns in the mainland has scuppered such attempts. In July last year, a Kashgar man blew himself up, some 50 yards away from the park. 3 people died in the blasts. The council and the Assembly have finally agreed back in March to provide extra security for the construction of the Racecourse. New Fuchau councillor Li Keying has claimed that building the Racecourse would generate BL$300 million a year into Fuchau's economy. |
