In the same vein as Dovakhan and the former Dovakhanese Marian Sea, there are a few small outlying islands (actually isles) that are around Dannistaan proper. Outlying Islands Overview map of the outlying islands around Dannistaan proper ![]() There are 4 clusters of outlying islands around Dannistaan. These are, from a clockwise direction starting in the north, Bel'nah, South Evelin, Ka'nahrii and Pou'nehs. The islands are mostly unpopulated, save for a few villages on one or two islands in each cluster. The islands are either used as nature reserves or locations for military bases. Any population on the islands tends to be static and mostly rural, with supplies and trade goods being made or grown locally and others brought in by aircraft or boat. Getting to the islands can be problematic as the weather can rapidly deteriorate in some of the locations. General advice If you plan on visiting any of the outlying islands, please be aware of the following advice. In many cases, the only way on and off the islands is via boat. Check carefully the ferry timetables for the service. These are clearly displayed on boards at each pier/slipway. In many cases, there is a choice of fast or slow ferries. Fast ferries tend to be small craft such as hydrofoils or speedboats that only carry passengers and run a more frequent service than the slow ferry. Slow ferries tend to be large craft of the RORO (Roll on-roll off) configuration that can carry cars and other motor vehicles. However, unless you can prove residency on the islands or that you run a business that requires motor vehicles on the island, you cannot simply board the ferry. You must either show proof of either of the above or apply for a permit, valid for a maximum of 24 hours, from the council official at the pier/slipway. Failure to do so will result in you being barred from boarding the ferry. Each permit slot is given on a strict first come, first served basis. It is considered good courtesy to surrender your permit card when you leave the island (Unless you plan on returning to it later, timetable permitting) so that your slot may be given to someone else wishing to take their car onto the island. Please note that all ferry services are subject to weather conditions. Check the weather bulletins carefully at the pier/slipway. It is your responsibility to check whether or not the ferry is operating at the time. Air services that operate between the islands are often for frieght, supplies, postal mail and medical emergencies only. There are some exceptions but check each island clusters guide below. Again these are subject to weather conditions. If an airborne passenger service is in operation, you may not be allowed to board if you are excessively intoxicated or if the pilot feels that your actions may endanger crew and other passengers. Check the terms and conditions at the airfield. It is also advised that most roads in the outlying islands, with a few exceptions, mostly consist of unpaved dirt tracks that are impassible to all except all terrain vehicles, such as 4 wheel drive off-road cars and some trucks. Most family cars and ordinary light and heavy goods vehicles will not be capable of using the unpaved island roads. The details will be given on the notice board at the pier/slipway. Also, most car rental agencies insurance and rental agreements do not cover use of the vehicle in the outlying islands nor do they cover any damage or injury incurred in the outlying islands. It is advised not to drive any vehicle on the island at all and to use the public transport services there. All the inhabited islands have some form of roaming fare that allows a days unlimited use of the public transport on the island at a competitive price and many islands will have some form of taxi service. There is no direct transport to any uninhabited islands and most are closed to the public either as nature reserves or military bases. You are reminded of the Nature Reserves Act (1976, amended 1996) and the Defence Establishments Act (1990, amended 1997). Failure to comply with any exclusion areas set up could result in a fine and/or cusodial sentence. Bel'nah Islands ![]() The Bel'nah islands were once home to the Bel'nah'rii tribe, a fierce group of warriors who once conquered and ruled a quarter of Dannistaan proper in 900AD (The area which is now the border region between modern North and East Dannistaan). They ruled that section of Dannistaan with an iron fist, demanding regular tribute offerings to be made. This lead to their undoing and ultimate near destruction and in 980AD the Norvu and Dannistra tribes forced the Bel'nah'rii off the island and back towards the Bel'nah homeland. Eventually in around 1000AD, the Dannistra and Norvu tribes ended up on Bel'nah'rii soil and gave their former rulers two choices. Either beg for forgiveness and be spared or have their blood spilt. The Bel'nah'rii initially chose the latter, attemping to eject the Dannistra and Norvu from their lands but sheer numbers meant they were nearly wiped out in the process. The remaining Bel'nah'rii people chose to surrender. Though now mostly assimulated into the modern day Dannistrians today, the inhabitants of the Bel'nah islands still maintain a strong and distinctive sense of identity, with the celebration of many festivals unique only to them. Administratively, the Bel'nah islands is part of North Dannistaan and the entire island chain makes up the Bel'nah county. The county and district councils have a large amount of autonomy with regards to local issues and the local economy. The only island that has any human presence today is the Bel'nah mainland with Bel'nah Onn being the adminstrative capital. The other major villages are Cho'rii, Na'tha, Orh'wii and Bec'tah. The only publically available form of transportation to the islands is the ferry service. There are two slow ferries every hour, which carry cars and passengers, and 1 fast ferry every 15 minutes, which carries passengers only. Be aware that only residents with cars and tourists with a permit from the county council may be allowed to take their car onto the Bel'nah mainland and that most of the roads are unpaved dirt tracks that only off-road vehicles can negotiate safely. The Royal Dannistrian Airforce own and operate a 2 runway (One paved, one unpaved) airfield on the Bel'nah mainland which is only available to military aircraft and residents of the island with an aircraft and license. Supplies are flown in through here. One of the main tourist attractions in the Bel'nah mainland is the large number of Bel'nah ruins and traditional Bel'nah rock carvings. The other islands are nature reserves and closed to public access. The only other building in the island cluster is a semi-autonomous radar station operated by the RDAF on Dah'rii island, in the far north east. South Evelin Islands ![]() In contrast to what the East Dannistrians refer to as the North Evelin islands (Dovakhanese Marian Sea, now Tokana), the South Evelin islands do not have any permanent human settlements currently. Sporadic attempts were made to inhabit the islands in early 600-700AD, 900-1000AD and 1400-1500AD. Ultimately their distance from Dannistaan proper made it impractical to inhabit the islands. Administratively, the islands are an East Dannistrian dependent territory directly run by the State Government. Currently the only presence on the islands is the military facilities on the atoll named South Evelin Mainland. The other islands are closed nature reserves. The Royal Dannistrian Airforce, Dannistrian Army and Royal Dannistrian Navy operate a joint facility consisting of 3 main barracks, a single runway airfield (Paved) and a port facility. The entire lagoon (South Evelin bay) is a sheltered bay for naval warships. There is no public access to the South Evelin islands and a 2 mile exclusion security zone surrounds the cluster. Members of the public are warned not to approach the area as it is patrolled 24/7 by naval vessels which are authorised to open fire on any and all trespassers. Only naval vessels and scientific research vessels with a permit are allowed to entire the island cluster. Ka'nahrii Islands ![]() The Ka'nahrii islands have, in contrast to the other clusters of islands, only been settled recently in the 20th century. During the Second World war and Cold War, the Royal Navy in Dannistaan required an offshore location for a port facility for refueling operations. The Ka'nahrii islands were chosen for this purpose. Over time the facilities expanded as operational requirements increased. Currently, the islands are administratively split between Central and South Dannistaan. The islands of Yii'rii (Also called the Double Isles to the British), Tanah'bruhic and Xou'lar are part of the North Ka'nahrii county of Central Dannistaan. The only settlements there are the villages of New Ta'nah and Old Ta'nah on Tanah'bruhic island with the former being the administrative town. A ferry runs between New Ta'nah and the mainland (City of South Port in Central Dannistaan) 4 times daily. There is a small heliport in Old Ta'nah but this is only used for emergencies and supplies. Xou'lar island used to be part of Tanah'bruhic but over several centuries the sea eroded a path until the island became seperate. There is a semi-autonomous radar station on Xou'lar and as such it is closed to the public. The South Ka'nahrii islands, consisting of the islands of Ka'nahrii, Prah'n-Eh'dou and Pah'has, make up the South Ka'nahrii county of South Dannistaan. The main settlements are Ka'nahrii-onn in the north of Ka'nahrii islands, Nah'diir in the north of Prah'n-Eh'dou and Tri'gou, the administrative town of the county, in the south of Pah'has island. The RDAF also operate two airfields in the area. RDAF Ka'nahrii and RDAF Pah'has near Ka'nahrii-onn and Tri'gou respectively. They are also used to fly in supplies. The village of Nah'diir has a civilian heleport where a shuttle service to the city of South Port in Central Dannistaan operates. It's mainly used to fly in supplies from the other two islands. However the main form of transportation is via ferry. There is one ferry that operates from Mah'nu Town and it visits Tri'gou, Nah'diir and Ka'nahrii-onn before visiting them again in reverse order on the return to Mah'nu Town. It runs 6 times daily, except on a weekend and public holiday where it is 8 times. There are also 3 fast ferries that operate from Mah'nu Town to the 3 main settlements every half hour until late. The most notable feature of Ka'nahrii island is the large naval base, HMDS Ka'nahrii built on reclaimed land on the east coast of the island. Most of the material for construction of the reclaimed land came from Ka'nahrii island itself. A large mountain peak used to dominate this island until it was leveled for stonework required for the base construction work. As a result the island is rather flat compared to others in the cluster. The base is used as a ordinance store as well as Dannistaans main nuclear submarine base. The base is also responsible for the safe disposal of nuclear vessel parts and is home to the main home defence fleet. As a result the entire southern and eastern coasts of the island, save for a small portion in the north east, is closed to the public. Several barrages delineate this closed area. Pou'nehs Islands ![]() The Pou'nehs islands have been inhabited since the Stone Age. Early ancestors of the West Dannistrian tribes lived here making a living from the sea. A culture that still is practiced in modern West Dannistaan and perhaps the reason why West Dannistrians make good sailors and seamen. Administratively, the cluster makes up the Pou'nehs County, which has a large amount of autonomy, similar to the Bel'nah Islands County in North Dannistaan. Only one island is inhabited in the cluster and that is the Pou'nehs mainland. The main villages, clockwise from the north, are Tou'rohn (Administrative capital), Loh'kahr and Hii'fout. There is a two runway military airfield (Both paved) in the north, RDAF Pou'nehs, which is used for training and supplies shipment. It is also open to island residents with a pilots license although only on a weekend, unlike on the other islands. A naval base, HMDS Pou'ron, is to the south and is also a major Search and Rescue facility, with several lifeboats and rescue helicopters based here. A paved single track road circles the entire Pou'nehs mainland visiting each location, although obviously permits are necessary to enter the airfield and naval base. There is 1 slow hourly ferry that carries cars and stops between Muh'rii'woud (Muirwood) in West Dannistaan and Tou'rohn and 1 fast ferries that carries passengers only every 30 minutes. Cars that do not belong to residents are severely restricted and require a day permit from the county council offices located at the Muirwood harbour. The other islands are closed to the public as they are nature reserves. The most striking feature of the Pou'nehs mainland is the "Triplets". These are the 3 highest mountain peaks on the island, all three of which stand at near identical heights in a straight line. This provides multiple landscape opportunities for photographers and is often a popular tourist destination. Lord Howard Island/Jong-il Shan ![]() N.B. Map is out of date and does not match current situation. This will be updated when I have the opportunity Although traditionally not considered a part of the outlying islands, Lord Howard island was originally transferred to Dannistrian sovereignty by the British as a gift on achieving independence. However the Bai Lungese, how had for a long time claimed the island to be theirs, immediately moved forces onto the island. Dannistrian forces retaliated by also stationing forces on the island. No one was killed or injured as a direct result of the actions but this lead to a ceasefire agreement where the island was divided in half with the Bai Lungese on the western side and the Dannistrian on the eastern side. As a result, no permanent human settlements have been built on the island and for a long time it represented Dannistaan's only land border with Bai Lung. With the conclusion of the Bai Lung-Dannistaan conflict and the collapse of the Communist regime, the Dannistrians have taken over full control of the entire island and reasserted it's sovereignty over the island. However this claim is still disputed by some Bai Lungese and for now the island remains marked as "disputed". Free/Dannistrian Tyrsis ![]() Officially not considered part of the outlying territories, Dannistrian/Free Tyrsis was previously a sovereign nation run by an autocratic dictatorship. Mostly consisting of sparse areas of woodland and vegetation surrounded by deserts. The main way of transportation is by road and rail. Internal flights are next to non-existant due to the lack of usable airfields. The main ports are located in the cities of Port Lyon, Port Oakham and Darril-Bensoh. Administratively, the most of the state is under the remit of the Tyrsis Autonomous Authority, a special body designed to allow Tyrsis a high degree of self-Government, including establishing its own armed forces, due to be ready in mid 2008. This also means Tyrsis has its own legislature, the Tyrsin National Assembly, which consists of 200 MPs in the lower house and 50 senators in the upper house. It also returns 10 MPs and 5 senators to the Dannistrian Central Parliament, however they only vote on issues that affect Tyrsis directly. Part of the south western corner of Tyrsis is currently under FPS administration and is named the "Port Lyon Bank". It has a seperate form of Governance as directed by the Free Pacific States. Currently the state is closed to most visitors due to the ongoing military operations in the south. ![]() The largest official outlying territory in Dannistaan, the Halvo-land territory was named in honour of the famous Dannistrian deity, Hal'vo. The area is mostly temperate barren grass and woodland. It is very sparsely populated and most of the people living there are either servicemen/servicewomen based in the military camps, family of the servicemen/servicewomen or civilian workers in the bases. There is no civilian flights to Hal'vo-land with the main airforce base RDAF Hal'ton taking in flights for supplies or military operations. The only ways to get into Hal'vo-land are by road via the main border crossings or by sea via the ferries that visit Hal'ton pier. The frequence is once every hour for the fast ferry or once every two hours for the slow one. There are a few villages scattered around the area, but the majority of the population live in the cities of Hal'ton (administrative city), Tah'ton, Nordu Lah'ns, Bas'sou Lah'ns and Evo'nahnth. A large area of the middle of the territory is closed off to the public and is used as a massive training ground and live firing range used by the Dannistrian Armed Forces. Surrounding that is a controlled area where some small villages still exist. Only residents with a permit are allowed to enter that controlled zone. Dannistrian visa waivers are not valid for the entire Hal'vo-land territory due to security reasons. Instead a special visa must be applied for at the Foreign Office in Dannistra Onn or one ot it's outpost offices in each of the state capitals. Residents of Kangarawa and Dovakhan can get this permit at the border entry point. The Hal'vo-land territory, because of its status, has some special concessions with regards to sales tax, making it a free trade port for certain goods and services. Hal'vo-land Territories (Hal'vii Islands) ![]() The largest official outlying territory in Dannistaan, the Halvo-land territories (Or Hal'vii Islands) are named in honour of the famous Dannistrian deity, Hal'vo. The area has a very cold, Antartic-like climate and its terrain consists mostly of barren grass and woodland with some tundra like deserts on South Hal'vii. It is very sparsely populated and most of the people living there are either servicemen/servicewomen based in the military camps, family of the servicemen/servicewomen, civilian workers in the bases or natives who had family who lived on those islands for several centuries before the establishment of the bases. There is no civilian flights to Hal'vo-land with the main airforce base RDAF Hal'vii taking in flights for supplies or military operations. The only way to get into Hal'vo-land are by sea via the ferries that visit the HMDS Hal'vii naval base. The frequence is once every hour for the fast ferry or once every two hours for the slow ferry, which is the only veseel to carry vehicles. There are a few villages scattered around the main island of South Hal'vii, but the majority of the population live in the cities of Hal'ton (administrative city), Tah'ton, Nordu Lah'ns, Bas'sou Lah'ns and Evo'nahnth. A large area of the middle of the island is closed off to the public and is used as a massive training ground and live firing range used by the Dannistrian Armed Forces. Surrounding that is a controlled area where some small villages still exist. Only residents with a permit are allowed to enter that controlled zone. There are other small towns and villages on the other islands in the area but reaching them can be a bit hazzardous due to the weather. The only road snakes through each of the islands across causeways built between most of the islands. The causeways themselves were built originally to protect the harbour in the middle of the Hal'vo-land territories. They still serve this purpose but now also carry the main arterial road through the islands as well. Between the islands of Fou'hii and Paterson, there lies a large area of reclaimed land upon which a mock-up of a generic city is built. This is used for military exercises and as a bombing range by the RDAF. Dannistrian visa waivers are not valid for the entire Hal'vo-land territory due to security reasons. Instead a special permit must be applied for at the Foreign Office in Dannistra Onn or one of it's satellite offices in each of the state capitals. The Hal'vo-land territories, because of its status, has some special concessions with regards to sales tax, making it a free trade port for certain goods and services. |

That wasn't my fault. The map was mostly mad up by Kelssek. I only filled in the fine details. So in essence, the map shows his side of the dispute, not mine. |
