Current Character List This list will be updated regularly and the history fleshed out thoroughly at a later date. This is virtually the definition of a "Work in Progress" ... ;] Anything in blue or red reflect the new timeline. The old character descriptions have been left in place to provide some continuity. Physically, Mappins is 51 years old, 6’3’’ tall, 190 lbs. and commonly described as “gangly-looking”. Sandy-coloured hair liberally streaked with grey are a perfect foil for his grey eyes, which reflect his mood more easily than his facial expressions to those who know him well. Mappins is a former Political Science Professor at Tasmin University. When he became disillusioned with the corruption of the former government, he ran for office seventeen years ago on the Socialist platform, and by some fluke, was elected. Once in the Commons, he had no difficulty retaining his seat. He always believed that he was one of Gorski’s token opposition members. Although a very strong leader, and an exceedingly intelligent man, his frustration at not being able to locate the leader of what he refers to as “The Faction”, comprised of the corrupt Ministers (and who knows who else) still in positions of power, is taking its toll. As a result, he has no private life, though he’d always imagined a wife and children. It is one of his greatest regrets. With her flaming red hair and standing 5’8” tall, the willowy Vice President is hard to miss. Although only 35 years old and elected four years ago, the former lawyer is skilled in diplomacy and has a firm grasp of the difficulties facing both the government and the people. She seems to have a knack for discerning who can and who cannot be trusted, and has, on more than one occasion, prevented Mappins from making costly mistakes. As a result however, the lives of both she and her family have been threatened repeatedly. At Mappins insistence, her family has been moved to a secure location leaving her extremely vulnerable. Secret service agents accompany her everywhere, and her living arrangements are changed constantly. Ambassador Katharine Alexander Former Ambassador to Wachovia, Katharine has recently been reassigned to Kandarin. Formerly Special Ops, along with her husband Paul, the two often travelled with their two daughters Karen and Alyssa, as part of their cover. Once Paul realized that one of their assignments was designed to eliminate a government critic, the Alexander family dropped out of sight and started working with Charles Fisher, training volunteers for the Resistance. Both daughters became adept with conventional hand weapons, self-defence and had some training as field medics. Although nothing was ever proved, it was suspected that a traitor amongst the trainees was responsible for the car bomb that killed both Paul and the eldest of the two daughters, Alyssa. Katharine and the remaining daughter, Karen, were spirited away by the Resistance to the farming community of Waboh. They remained there until Mappins, a friend of Katharine’s, located them and brought them back to Tasmin City. As one of Mappins confidantes, Katharine’s major concerns are the Faction and her daughter’s well-being. After being officially recalled to Kangarawa from Kandarin, Alexander was assigned non-specific duties in the Ministry of International Affairs. She disappeared after two years. Current whereabouts: Unknown Karen Elizabeth Alexander Currently the 18-year-old is a student at Shiro. Because of her unconventional upbringing, she has been taught to keep her emotions under control at all times, something at which she usually succeeds. She never talks about her background, except in very generic terms. She has been diagnosed with PTSD, and at times the nightmares/flashbacks are unbearable. Her grounding techniques are excellent, but she always dreads the inevitable questions from her mother. See mother's background for more info about Karen. Karen graduated from Shiro with joint degrees in Mathematics and Physics. EMDR and the discontinuation of all medications effectively "cured" her PTSD, although given the research on the subject, reoccurrances of some symptoms will likely occur at different times. Current whereabouts: Unknown. Dr. Adam Kuragosa At age 39, this brilliant geneticist sold his soul to the devil by becoming involved with the Faction. On loan to the Kandarinese for a special project, he sought redemption by turning against the Faction. He has been granted asylum in Kandarin. He is still paying the price for his initial decision as he tries to help his daughter cope with their new life and the effects his decision had on her. After Kuragosa left Occupied Xiopothos where he was working with Kandarinese studying the ramahnai, it is believed that he returned to Kandarin. May Sarah Kuragosa Under an imminent death sentence by the Faction, May was rescued by the Kandarinese and was reunited with her father in Kandarin. Small for her age, with long dark hair, the precocious 12-year-old shows signs of the same brilliance as her father. Although she loves Kandarin and feels very safe there, she suffers from horrific nightmares revolving around her time in captivity. Now 16 years of age, May has, for the most part, been following in her father's footsteps in terms of academics, fascinated by both genetics and bio-engineering. Mistrustful of most having spent so many years in Kandarin, she's outwardly charming while dissecting the motives and characters of everyone she encounters. She's well-versed in the "fact" that nothing and no one can be taken at face value. At only 5' tall with dark hair down to her waist, she looks more like an athletic 12 yr-old. At age 64, the Minister of State has three years left in office. Known for her acerbic wit and diminutive stature (4’11”), she is said to be the one person who knows where “all the bones are buried”. She is also on record as saying that fighting the effects of ageing is a sign of insecurity. As her hairdresser will testify, her grey hair is perfectly natural. Patience is not known to be one of her virtues. Following the assassinations of both the President and the Vice-President early in 2007, Miller assumed the Presidency, lauded as a heroine for her part in identifying those responsible for the deaths: the Kandarinese. At age 68, her appearance has changed little. Nor has her nature. Secretary of Intelligence: Joseph Claind Claind has 1 year remaining in his term of office. Reappointed by Miller, Claind has 17 years remaining in his term. His health has improved dramatically over the past 4 years. Former deep cover operative and then Special Ops Instructor, Fisher was appointed shortly after Mappins was elected. Fisher and Mappins have been friends since their university days, and Fisher was instrumental in unobtrusively motivating the Resistance. Able to blend into a crowd, the 49-year-old stands 5’10” tall, is of average weight, hazel eyes and greying sandy brown hair. A severe knee injury is responsible for bringing him out of the field, something he regrets deeply. Fisher remained in office for a year following the deaths of Mappins and Scythes. Colleagues found his office empty one morning, his living quarters indicating that he'd not been home for an extended period of time. Current whereabouts: Unknown. Under-Secretary of Intelligence: Dmitri Kostrov Formerly stationed at the Embassy in Coocoostan, Kostrov was appointed by Claind after Fisher's disappearance. Secretary of Defence: Mooseknee has 5 years remaining in his term of office. Blythe was appointed by Miller on the expiration of Mooseknee's term of office. Though quiet and deferential, he has an imposing physical presence. Under-Secretary of Defence: Chris Hayes A “numbers” man, and former lawyer, Hayes was appointed within a year of Mappins election. The highly intelligent 56-year-old is 5’11” tall, 170 lbs., and as his wife keeps telling him, growing more and more distinguished looking as he greys. He has been appointed Kangarawa’s representative on the EPTO. Slow to anger, Mappins makes use of his diplomatic skills, both on the EPTO and as a way of bypassing the Secretary of Defence when things need to be accomplished quickly. After the appointment of Carter Blythe as Secretary of Defence, Hayes has found himself on a short leash. General Steven Braun Deceased - 2005 Dark haired and imposing looking at 6’4”, 215 lbs., Braun is responsible for maintaining the four military bases located in the vicinity of Lake Macquarrie north-east of Tasman City. Quick-tempered, he is feared rather than respected by a majority of the men and women under his command. Like all bullies, however, one suspects a coward underneath the bravado. He prefers being given orders to exercising his own initiative, allowing him the luxury of denying responsibility for his actions. General Dick McKinistry McKinistry assumed responsibility for the maintenance of all four military installations following the death of Braun. One additional military installation, that in the Grand Duchy of Reziel, is not under his supervision. He answers directly to Carter Blythe. Minister of International Affairs: Carolyn Masters Carolyn Peters Retired. Ms Peters has seven years left to serve in office. At 54 years of age, she stands 5’6” tall, and although only her hairdresser knows for sure, her hair is as dark as it was when she was in her twenties. Carolyn Masters, recalled from the Embassy in Coocoostan, was appointed to the position after Peters' retirement. In her opinion, the logical choice for the appointment would have been David Miller but he declined the position citing ill-health before literally dropping out of sight. Masters is finding that she has her hands full and misses his sage advice. Minister of Finance: Derek Forsythe Adept at “managing” the books, Forsythe has five years left in his term. Reappointed to his position, Forsythe has 1 year left in his term. It is widely suspected that he will be reappointed. Minister of Healthcare/Social Services: Joseph Oneida Appointed by Mappins, Oneida has 17 years remaining in his term. Oneida has 13 years remaining in his term. To decrease government expenditures, Miller amalgamated the Ministries of Healthcare and Social Services. With his Ministry chronically and critically underfunded, Oneida is generally frustrated beyond belief. Minister of Labour/Education & Training: Stephen Wayman Appointed by Mappins, Wayman has 14 years remaining in his term. Wayman has 10 years remaining in his term and fully expects to be replaced. With funding to Education & Training drastically cut and the upsurge of "Speciality" and Military Academies which no longer fall under his jurisdiction, he's hard-pressed to ensure that even a rudimentary education is provided for those in attendance at schools/colleges/universities which remain under his control. Minister of the Interior: Anne Truscott Truscott has 6 years remaining in her term. Truscott has 2 years remaining in her term of office. Like Forsyth, it is expected that she will be reappointed. Shaw has 2 years remaining in her term. Shaw was "assigned" to the Ministry of Labour/Education & Training upon the end of her term. Stenman has 2 years remaining in his term. The Ministry was eliminated in order to reduce government expenditures. Mark Stenman now runs a Devil-kabob stand in Tasman Harbour. Appointed by Mappins, Knight has 15 years remaining in his term. Minister of Taxation and Revenue: James Rimes Appointed by Mappins, Rimes has 19 years remaining in his term of office. Rimes has 15 years left in his term. Meeting the needs of big business require most, if not all, of his time. Dr. Gwen Rennar The 34 year old Rennar is both a brilliant virologist as well as an epidemiologist. Surprisingly, she also has an excellent background in genetics having worked as a researcher for a year under the tutelage of Dr. Adam Kuragosa. Head of the Dept. of Scientific Research and Technology, Gwen came very close to turning down the promotion until personally approached by the newly appointed Minister of Health, Joseph Oneida. She is responsible for overseeing the three Level 4 Research Laboratories, along with all other Research facilities. She does, however, miss being in the field and is not convinced that paperwork is her forte. Dr. Liam Maggarity Maggarity's affable and out-going manner often lead others to underestimate the intelligence of the 46 year old virologist. An expert in emerging pathogens, he has travelled all over the EP. Although he refers to Kangarawa as 'home', Rennar suspects that My Li Yuen has something to do with that decision. Dr. Hans Streicher Although trained in the same areas as Rennar, his forte is epidemiology. Very quiet and serious, he shares little of his background with his colleagues. My Li Yuen Yuen is the most respected microbiologist in Kangarawa. Beyond the fact that her training and experience are unsurpassed, she trusts her instincts as well. |
