Slave to the Hive Mind
|
Well - here we go, I am running for Delegate History: I started playing last December, and have been completely hooked. Initially I just answered issues and built my country. Then I joined the WA and began reading through proposals. Finally I found the forum, and I’ve been here ever since. The government interests me, and I've been in several of the feeders in different roles. Even though I am a fan of feeders, The East Pacific is by far my favorite for a variety of reasons. The foremost among these reasons is the sense of community and the welcome that all players receive here. This is a place where, regardless of your experience of the game, your ideas are always welcome. To my knowledge, every player in this region is enjoying him/herself, and this needs to continue. I was an active member of the Magisterium and Provost pro Tempore (and acting Provost) during the previous term (more about that later). I wrote the previous issue of TEP foreign affairs update, and am an ambassador to six regions. I am currently serving as the first ever Officer of Tourism in TEP, and have been actively telegramming new nations to invite them to this great community that we know as the forum. I am one of the most active posters on the Regional Message Board, so nations who aren’t registered on the forum also know me. It is probably well known that I am a fan of forum games, and I post there as often as possibly (usually several times a day). On the Magisterium: The previous term’s Magisterium was a great legislative body which managed to draw many great pieces of legislation. Seven proposals have been brought to vote, six have already passed, and the seventh looks will probably do the same. Of these seven proposals, five had my direct work in them; two had my opinions presented in debate (DFD’s appointment and Kelssek’s amendments to our standing orders). The other proposals were a law regarding tied votes (in which both the topic and parts of the bill were written by me), the election of our provost (which was a tied election - despite this being my first term in the Magisterium, the members had great confidence in me – the elected provost had a very laid back leadership style, which often made me the one keeping records of the votes and pushing forward debate), the creation of the Office of Tourism (which I was selected to lead), a treaty with the region of Lazarus (this is the first treaty that TEP has passed since the creation of the Concordat – the original treaty was old, so I took the concerns of the Lazarene leaders and re-wrote the treaty), and the proposal currently at vote, which will put limitations on advertisers on our RMB. If Elected as Delegate- This list could be very large, so I’ll try to keep it to a minimum. Foreign Affairs: This is one part of our government that requires a great deal of attention. Expanding on our current foreign affairs system will improve our standing in the eyes of other regions. Some of the most populous regions (with several hundred inhabitants) do not have official ties to TEP. This would be one of the first changes that would occur – every region that has a forum and over one hundred nations (or smaller, if they are interested) will be asked to exchange ambassadors with us. The foreign affairs team cannot be limited to the delegate and a foreign affairs minister (which, during the previous administration, was true). To get more players to act as ambassadors, I would strongly encourage all members of the government – magisters, arbiters, ministers – to hold at least one ambassador posting each. As an ambassador, I find the job more interesting when I join other activities on the forum (often a game room or other spam forum); ever ambassador would not be required to fully integrate with their host region, but I believe that, over time, many ambassadors will grow more comfortable and will be well known in their host region (I would like to cite the ambassadors from Ulthar as good examples). I would continue with my current postings and take many more, as would my appointed foreign affairs minister, but having many others involved in foreign affairs would help make this region livelier. Because of the introduction of the new “liberation” proposal type in the World Assembly, I propose that TEP send a Special Representative (a senior member of our community) to any region that is the target of a successful liberation proposal. This Representative would offer any assistance (that is within TEP’s power) that the natives of the region require in order to successfully rebuild their community. World Assembly: I find the WA very interesting (I take part in a mock-UN in RL), and enjoy that TEP has fun with it as well. The current WA Liaison has been doing an amazing job, but the creation of the Security Council has changed some things. I would like my appointed WA Liaison to, if not post, at least to read the official NS forum on WA matters. The Liaison would then post in our forum telling the rest of the region about the concerns raised by WA regulars. I think that we should work closely with them in the future – no one likes making unnecessary enemies. I would also like to encourage members of our region to come up with ideas for proposals – post in on our forum, and the region will help you perfect it. No one should feel that only the WA Old Guard can propose resolutions (for example, the resolution currently at vote, the Epidemic Response Act, was submitted – and will probably pass – without ever being presented as a draft in the WA forum). Additionally, I find it saddening that a mere handful of players get to decide how 160+ votes are cast. When the mass-telegram option is finally implemented ([violet] said that it will happen eventually), I would use that tool to notify the region of the resolution and ask all nations for their input. I would also like to welcome input on C/Cs and liberations – the two types of resolutions that we know the most about. Tourism: As the previous head of this department, I can attest that it is a difficult job. A lot of time is spent telegramming information to new nations. With the addition of mass-telegrams, the nature of the job (Officer of Tourism) may change. The Officer and I will write a short weekly (perhaps bi-weekly) newsletter to be sent to all nations in the region. It will include forum information, upcoming RMB activities, and a segment on the current WA resolution. TEP Newspaper: In the current administration, the newspaper has been merely an update to be sent to other regions. I would like to involve the entire region by allowing all types of articles to be published. There will be regular columns by the Delegate (a summary of what has happened), the Provost (about the Magisterium), the Viceroy (if anything was brought to the Conclave), the WA Liaison (on TEP’s votes on resolutions), the RP Administrator (about RP), and the Officer of Tourism (about new members of the forum). But that won’t be the entire newspaper; any region member may submit an article on regional happenings, an interregional event, a new aspect of NS, or a piece of fiction or satire. I hope that this will encourage the entire region to take part and strengthen our sense of community. Roleplay: The East Pacific has always been known as a center of great RP, but recently many roleplays have slowed down, and only a few are currently active. I believe that this must be changed. I believe that the main reason for the downturn in activity pertaining to roleplay is that newer players aren’t involved. I would like the RP administrator to work with other senior roleplayers to make a “How to Roleplay in TEP” guide. This would be presented as a part of TEP University. Personally, I plan on starting roleplaying in both Shiro and the Sealab. Once those two settle down, I will start a roleplay about my nation, which currently has no roleplay history. All other nations would be welcomed in this, and, if it is successful, I would welcome all new nations to start similar roleplays, and allow the rest of the community to learn about your nation. For the Magisterium: The downturn in the number of NS players has hit the feeders particularly hard. I would like you to look at The South Pacific, which is another feeder region where the delegate has reigned for several years. Their entire government and almost their entire forum are stagnant. I would like the Magisterium to discuss some sort of term limit for the delegate. I would like to see the term limit as only one consecutive term, but with a clause that allows two terms with some sort of check by both the Magisterium and the Conclave. After reading this, I hope you decide that I am the best candidate for Delegate of The East Pacific. I ask you for your vote. This was longer than I anticipated, but if you have any questions, feel free to post them and I will answer them to the best of my ability. Thank you. |

I would like to say that I have just started RPing in the Sealab - I encourage everyone else to do the same. The activity will be there as long as YOU help to create it. The more involved you are in this forum, the more fun it will be for everyone. I hope to see everyone as active as possible. (Note to those who haven't RPed before - it is not as hard as you may think, just give it a try) Thanks. |

Regarding Relations with the Delegate I would also like to implement a regularly scheduled Question and Answer period with the Delegate on Chatzy. I feel that I can best serve you when I hear how you feel that I'm doing. I would also set up polls every month regarding the performance of all Executive Branch members (and, if successful, this could be expanded to the Magisterium and Conclave). I hope that I can be as approachable as possible, because discussing ideas with others will help develop rough ideas into well-made plans. Thank you. |

I would ask questions about what you see in TEP, but I realize that the answers I get will not cover the grounds I want to approach, so I will be frank and not beat around the bush...plus, I hate waiting for responses sometimes when it slows down the umph of the point I need to make. Based off the information you have provided us, I am concerned about a few things that I will just be forthright about. First, is the level of experience you have in NS. I do not doubt your word, but if you have been involved in NS and TEP for as long as you have said so, you would not have the ideal necessary experience needed to run a feeder region. Delegacy in feeders transcends your everyday regional delegacy....it is a far more serious and greater commitment than running your own region or another smaller region. I would really hate to see you overwhelmed with the level and depth of that involvement when you have expressed a passion for NS, which may be jeopardized in biting off too much than you may be able to handle. I know you are enthusiastic and this is wonderful! I am just concerned that you do not realize the implications of delegacy....it is far harder than the involvement you reported having based off your campaign post. I personally have been in the game a long long long time. I am probably more than well qualified for delegacy, but I have no misconception about the intensity and commitment a position like that has, and therefore, I have avoided feeder delegacy positions for quite some time. It is a careful consideration to make, and I really hope that you consider all the implications of delegacy. It is a serious time demanding position with little praise and many hassles, as I am sure Todd can confirm. If you can handle this, go for it, but please do seriously consider all that comes with the position. Furthermore, I am concerned that you are "cookie cutting" TEP. I love TEP because it is unique, but all I have read in your post indicates that TEP is "just another feeder." No! It is TEP! We do not want another feeder, we want TEP. It is an environment I hope to further foster and protect. I want people to be in TEP because it is THE feeder to be in and not just another among the others. I would like if you can re-explore your thoughts and feelings towards TEP and hopefully plan something to assure that the integrity, pride, and especially the uniqueness of TEP is preserved and polished should you take the position of delegacy. Also, tell me more about this game if you will; more about what TEP means to you personally and what you plan to do to bring out enjoyment in the game more. I mean, we are struggling to increase activity, do this and that, but we are fighting mountains with those unsolvable issues. In reality, activity is outside of our control. We can only work with what we have and make that the best for us. So how do you plan on keeping the members who are here enjoying this game and contributing more to other areas? I see you are involved in politics, which is excellent! Just remember, the game is multi-faceted and all those facets need to be considered in your campaign. If you emphasize one over another, you will not reach as many people as you can potentially reach covering all bases of the game. Thanks for listening Dyr, and do not be offended. I am merely trying to help and suggest areas of improvement and considerations that seem to have been somewhat misguided or neglected. I know I can be taken as harsh sometimes, but I am just trying to be helpful the only way I really know how, to be honest. I really wish you the best of luck in campaigning and please review some of my suggestions! Best of luck! DFD ![]() |

Response First, I want it to be known that I am in no way "cookie cutting" the region. TEP is the best region out there for innumerable reasons, and I am sorry if my post was misconstrued. About the Conclave There are a few things that I would like to see in the Conclave. First, I would like to see the Viceroy administrating the elections, not the delegate (this is in the Concordat). The Viceroy should also keep a record of all citizens in the region; this record should be updated, ideally, once a month, but at least before every election. Additionally, I would like the Conclave to rule whether it would be legal for the Magisterium to create a lower limit for the number of Arbiters in the Conclave. Because the Conclave is the sole court of the region, I feel it disturbing that it could, theoretically, only have a single member, and no one person should be the sole interpreter of the law. |

Your ideas on the Conclave are interesting and worth considering. Why do you think a term limit for the Delegate is a good idea? |

I gave the example of TSP earlier, and I don't want the same thing to happen here; TEP is too good for us to let that happen. Stagnation is the opposite of activity, and stagnation is what will occur with one delegate for too long. |

Dyr, thanks for the compliment, but let me correct you on something... While i don´t post there, i do read the NS forum on WA matters. Specially on C&C resolutions, since i´m not that old in the game, and some times its only there that i get to know about the nation/region to be commended/condemned. |
