Several Minutes later, Somewhere in the North Hal'vii Islands

"LZ confirmed. Ready for drop. Just give the word commander...<CLICK>" the pilot said. Everytime the pilot finished speaking, his amplification throat microphone, designed to allow himself to be heard over the noise of the helicopters rotor blades, would punctuate the comms channel with a sharp click, as if to indicate he was finished talking.
"You sure you don't want to lead the way, Lieutenant?" Kah'lad asked as he started running through the final start up checklist in his AC. Sha'la laughed over the comms.
"Nope. I may hold a higher rank, but I'm officially seconded to you and Friedrick. So lead the way, Corporal."
Kah'lad sighed.
"OK then. Pilot, we're ready. Initiate drop on my mark...Mark!"
"Hal'vo Hav'nar, Kah'lad. Hal'vo Hav'nar," the pilot said as he released the holding clamps on all three AC's. The mechs dropped to the ground with a resounding thud. Kah'lad checked his view screen, then activated the Plus enhancements. His view was replaced by a crude 3D VR projection of the landscape. The departing helicopter now represented by a cuboid with a circle above it.

"OK folks. Here's the plan. The LASTAR AC was last seen in the village 1 mile to the north. We follow the ice road ahead of us to reach it. Once there, check for any survivors or casualties and check the area for the AC. Our priority is to destroy the LASTAR AC. Sha'la, you are on Offensive Position One. Friedrick, You are Offensive Position Two. I'll be Defensive Position One. Offence objective is to concentrate all firepower onto the LASTAR AC and disable or destroy it. Defensive objective is to distract the LASTAR AC and give it target to shoot. Any questions?"

As they dropped, Friedrick closed his eyes and concentrated, allowing his senses to mingle with the AC. Seconds later, he was feeling the AC as if it was his own body.

"Colder..." He whispered, before he managed to get a hold of himself and shrug off those feelings, as learned from the writing of the monks of the old empire, which ashes gave birth to his country.

After a few steps he started to get used to his "new" body. Too bulky for his taste, as he favor middle-weight ACs, but the sense of strength was exhilarating.

Then he spoke, through the comm-link:

"Yīknow, Kah'lad. My people would have loved this AC. I think itīs perfect for the "everything and the kitchen sink" approach to weaponry that is so popular back home."

Seconds later, in a serious tone:
"Sha'la, Kah'lad, i might be going for a conspiracy theory here, but just to be safe, i think we should expect a 'Section 9' intervention about the time weīre finishing off LASTAR. I take theyīll go just for melting whatever is left of LASTAR, but iīd save a few rounds of ammo for them, just in case.
And we should decide now if weīll try to disable LASTAR and find the truth, or just get rid of it with all our firepower. Iīd choose the first, despite being more dangerous, but iīll understand if we go for the second."

Kah'lad felt a cold shiver at the mention of potential interference from Section 9. He checked the VR readout of the surrounding landscape.

"To be honest, Friedrick, I'm all for simply reducing the AC to a pile of scrap. It's caused enough damage already..."
Kah'lad checked the technical specs of the LASTAR AC as he paused to collect his thoughts.
"...there may be a way to destroy it quickly and find out the truth though...two actually..."
"Which are?" Sha'la asked impatiently.
"One. The head part on the AC, as with all AC's, is where one of the main computers is stored. The LASTAR AC uses a special computer that due to it's complexity has 9 memory units instead of 6. The memory units is where the main program for the AI is stored. If we can recover at least one, it will give us an idea what went wrong. Two. The main core itself houses a 'Black Box' data recorder. All Dannistrian AC's have one. If we can recover it from the wreckage, it will tell us the last movements of the AC. Assuming that someone hasn't deleted the data from it."

Kah'lad looked around.
"I can't guarantee either will be intact in the heat of battle. We will have to deal with it as we go along."

The mechs trundled along the road, carefully checking their surroundings as they went. As they approached the village, Kah'lad signalled for all the AC's to stop.
"Hmm...looks like we might be a little too late..."

The village had been reduced to smouldering pile of rubble within a large crater. Kah'lad thumped the cockpit of his mech in despair.
"DAMMIT!..." he muttered, pausing for several minutes before speaking.
"Something's not right here..." Kah'lad murmured, "The damage here isn't consistent with a light AC."
"I agree," Sha'la piped up, "This can't be the work of a light AC. Really looks like a heavy AC. Maybe a Type 5 at least. More likely an army of them."

Kah'lad looked around.
"Stay on your toes people! This might be a trap!"

As soon as Kah'lad finished his sentence, missiles were fired from the rubble, catching they unaware.

After the explosion went off, started the chatter on the radio...

"Shit... Why couldnīt i be a seer" grumbled Friedrick, although he actually rather bonding with machines than future seeing.
"Everybody alright?" asked Kah'lad, even though his AC, being light-weight was the only one knocked-down by the explosion

And Sha'la screamed "AHHHHH!" and started firing at a fast moving target that erupted from the rubble

"Iīm fine, thank... Itīs him, LASTAR!" replied Friedrick as his eyes, merged with the AC sensors registered the compatible profile.

"Iīm on it." said Kah'lad, as he made his AC boost in the air, to meet LASTAR in battle.

Able to match LASTAR speed thanks to his plus modification (and a rather heavy booster), Kah'lad caught its attention with a few left-arm blade cuts.

"Get out!" said Sha'la impatiently, as only her feline reflexes allowing her to stop her heavy AC ballistic salvo when Kah'lad "popped" at her target side.

"At ease, lieutenant. Heīs following the plan. Aim carefully and itīs our!" said Friedrick as his AC stopped to activate its back-mounted rail-gun, feeling as if soft, feminine hands guided his aim.
At his side, noticing that both LASTAR and Kah'lad landed at the other side of the crater, moving from melee to a short-ranged firefight, Sha'la started to lock missiles at LASTAR...

"OK! Defence 1 in position!" shouted Kah'lad into the radio.
"Offence 1 in position!" Sha'la replied, keeping the missiles locked on.
"Offence 2 in position!" Friedrick replied, railgun still trained on the LASTAR AC.

After a couple of seconds, Kah'lad hit the throttle on his mech and started running along the road away from the village ruins. The LASTAR mech followed, opening fire with it's machine gun.
"EAT THIS!" shouted Sha'la as she let off a salvo of missiles at the LASTAR mech. At first it seemed to dodge them, but the missiles adapted and slammed into the side of the mech, sending it into a pirouette into the ground. Sha'la loaded a second volley of missiles.
"Friedrick, give him hell!" Sha'la shouted as she took cover to reload.
"Gladly," Friedrick mused as he targeted the now fallen mech and let off a single, devastating round. The railgun round hit the LASTAR AC so hard, it shattered the enemy mech instantly and almost caused Friedrick to lose balance, but with enough concentration he retained composure.
"Wow," Sha'la remarked, "Impressive. Think I could have a go on that piece?" she joked as the three AC's regrouped.
"Cut the jokes Sha'la, we can play later," Kah'lad barked to her annoyance. Kah'lad then steadily moved over to the wreckage of the AC. Scanning it on his VR readout. He nodded.
"Nice work. There isn't much left, but one of the main computer's memory units and the black box recorder both seem to be intact...guys, cover me while I have a look."
"Roger!" both Freidrick and Sha'la commented as Kah'lad opened up the outer hatch and climbed out. He struggled to breath in the blizzard conditions. After some struggling, he managed to manhandle a circuit board and an orange metal container out the pile of wreckage.
"OK, I got one of the memory boards and the black box. Freidrick, you keep a hole of the memory board. There should be a small storage compartment in your AC."
"Got it..." Friedrick opened up a smaller hatch in the back of the AC. Kah'lad carefully stows away the board, then ran back to his own mech. On entry, he checked the black box.
"Tape is still intact. Maybe we could figure out what is going on in it?"

Before Kah'lad could examine the tape in more detail, the radar readout in the cockpit started beeping. Kah'lad looked at it in surprise.
"More bandits? What in Hal'vo's name?"
There was a sudden explosion right behind the group. The trio wasted no time in withdrawing from the village ruins.
"What was that?! I thought there was only 1 AC?!" shouted Sha'la.
"So did I!" Kah'lad replied, "Take cover and open fire on anything that comes up the road!"
"Target 1 o'clock! Medium AC!" Friedrick indicated as he charged another round on the railgun.
After several more rounds of fire exchanged from both sides, the fighting stopped. Kah'lad checked the readout.
"This is complete fish piddle!" Sha'la exclaimed in annoyance, "I want to see a fair fight! Not some coward hiding in the ruins!"
"Looks like he might not agree there..." Kah'lad murmured as he checked the cockpit instrumentation. A second, more heavily armed AC appeared on the top of a partially destroyed snow drift.
"Unidentified AC, identify yourself immediately or be prepared to be destroyed!" Kah'lad indicated in a serious tone.

The mech, painted in a dark purple and only marked with "01 TEST TYPE", only walked slowly toward the group and their cover, a pile of rubble from a large industrial building. The AC looked around before raising the machine gun on it's right arm.
"Looks like it's based on the chasis of of Type 74 Gloucester class AC. But I'm wary of what the generals have not told us, so keep your guard up!" Kah'lad indicated as he motion for his colleagues to back away slightly. The unidentified AC continued slowly towards them. Kah'lad then signalled for Friedrick and Sha'la to open fire on the AC. Several missiles and railgun shots hit the AC, causing it to topple over mid boost, forcing it to crash into a tree.
"Now what?" Kah'lad looked around for any further contacts.

"...well done...but is that really the way to treat an old friend?"
Kah'lad stared at the radio in disbelief. The voice that suddenly spoke had a sneering quality to it.
"You again!...but that's impossible! What are you doing here?!" Kah'lad shouted, "Where are you dammit?! SHOW YOURSELF!!"
An mocking laugh filled the airwaves.
"Not yet...I want to see how you dealt with this situation first...old friend..."
"Sah'lihm...what are you doing hear? Have you had anything to do with this village?!"
Sah'lihm only laughed again.
"I see they didn't tell you anything again...old friend...those crusty old generals chose to withhold everything...I do apologise but I'm not going to spell out my plan like some B-Movie villain...not yet anyway...HAVE AT YOU KAH'LAD!"

Sah'lihm cackled as several explosions rang out around the group, forcing all their AC's to fall over.
"Gah...argh..." Kah'lad groaned as he stood his AC back up.
"Everyone OK?" he asked. Sha'la responded, "I'm fine, if a bit bruised."
"Friedrick?"

As he use his AC arms to shield the core from the explosions, Friedrick found himself in a world of hurt, as it felt as his own arms were being broken.
Gladly, his stoic nature prevented a scream, and by the time his AC rose he was already in control of himself.

With Kah'lad question, he answered:

"Broken arms... ugh, i mean AC broken arms. Iīm fine. More impontantly, the tape still intact. But i hope this railgun proves itself as solid as it looked on paper, for its all that i got now. And you?"

Before the answer, he saw Sah'lihm readying his AC for another salvo and boosted in his direction speaking:

"Not a B-Movie villain all right. So be it. Iīm not a movie hero as well!"

With that he stopped his booster as soon as his AC rose above Sah'lihmīs. From there, gravity took place and several tons of metal suddenly were aimed at Sah'lihm AC head, performing the infamous maneuver known as "death from above", as it pushed the victim AC broken head into the cockpit, killing the pilot with his own AC.

Unsurprisingly, either due his plus nature or his background, Sah'lihm knew dirty tricks well enough and dodged in the last second by stepping back, as Friedrick predicted, but to Sah'lihm dismay, while if he fired his missiles so close both would die, Friedrick had the railgun pre-aimed to his cockpit, firnig as soon as he landed...

...A move that only severed Sah'lihmīs AC right arm, for once again plus implant and natural piloting skills carried the day, allowing him to side-boost in a split-second, saving him from an attack that no non-plus raven would have survived.

"Urgh," Kah'lad groaned as he looked around. His head was still hurting from the initial explosion. The sight of Friedrick and Sah'lihm jumping back and forth along the area did not help his headache and confusion as he tried to make sense of the situation. After the fight, the two mechs stood still for a several seconds, attempting to size each other up.

"You are pretty good, von Richthofen," Sah'lihm's sneering voice filled the radio, "I didn't think you would know 'Death from above'. Did you know that the instructors back home in Dannistaan recommend against using it due to the high risk?"
"Sah'lihm...just what are you doing here?" Kah'lad asked, trying to stand his AC up, "...the last time we saw you...you were in custody in a military stockade..."

Sah'lihm chuckled.
"Oh come now, old firend. You really think I'm just going to tell you?"
"Why not? You always considered yourself higher than any of us," Kah'lad hissed sarcastically.
"Oh, you are too kind...too kind indeed. But alas, I do not think it is the right time to tell you...maybe later...if you survive..."

Before the trio could react, another round of explosions rocked the ground. Kah'lad figured out where they were coming from and warned the others.
"It's remote mines. Brace yourselves."
The explosions continued to rock the ground, though this time no one was toppled as they supported themselves. Sah'lihm gave a manic laugh as he tried to leave.
"Friedrick, Sha'la! Stop him!"
"Roger!" they both replied as they attempted to fire all their weapons at Sah'lihm. Sah'lihm continued to dodge the weapons fire despite their best efforts.

"He's good...but a jerk," Sha'la remarked as he prepared another round of missiles.
"My my...such low opinion of me...I don't think I could cope..." Sah'lihm remarked sneeringly. After several more minutes of fighting that saw attack and counter attack, everyone paused again.

"Well, it's been fun people...especially with you, Kah'lad...but I'm getting bored...and I have other things to do...so ta-ta for no...GAH!! WHAT THE?!"
"BEEP <SEQUENCE OVERRIDE ALPHA ZERO ZERO ONE ENGAGED> BEEP"
"What have you three done?! IS THIS ANOTHER TRAP OF YOURS?!" Sah'lihm demanded as the beeping continued.
"BEEP <COMMAND KILO INDIA LIMA LIMA ZERO ONE INITIATED. STAND CLEAR...> BEEP"
"DAMN Y...!"

Sah'lihm was unable to complete his sentence as his AC suddenly exploded, collapsing into a heap infront of the trio.
"Ooo...kay..." Sha'la stated, "That was...weird...was that any of you?"
"No," Friedrick replied.
"Not me," Kah'lad followed.
The three stood silent for several seconds before the radio beeped again.
"Hmm? Who's this? Signal unknown?" Kah'lad read the screen on the comms system before answering, "Hello?"
"Good work holding off that AC. Gave us enough time to hack his systems. But that isn't the end of it and Private Our'ii Sah'lihm isn't dead...yet...we hope to deal with him later..."
"Who is this?"
"Your LYNX operator for now, Private Forr'sith" the female voice answered.
"OK...can we get a name?"
"I can't give you my real name...but you can call me Kokoro."
"Kokoro?" Sha'la interrupted, "As in Japanese for heart or soul?"
"That's my codename," Kokoro replied, "I'm from SID."
"SID? As in Special Investigations Directorate?"
"That is correct," Kokoro replied calmly, "I've been assigned to help you. Not officially mind you. We have an interest in dealing with the situation here."
"I knew it!" Sha'la shouted, "I knew you Section 9 people are up to no good."
"There is no need for the open hostility, Lieutenant Hasegawa-Am'ara. I know my direct superiors are not well respected in the rest of the Dannistrian Army, but without us, we wouldn't be where we are today."
"I just don't appreciate being used like that!" Sha'la snarled.
"Well, OK. How did you make his AC self-destruct without his authorisation?"
"With great difficulty. We'll explain when you return to the base camp. A transport helicopter is being sent your way now..."

As Kokoro spoke, the whirling of the helicopter could be heard above the trio.
"Ah...there it is now. It will take you back to base. I will meet you there..."
After the trio had a chance to warm up and tend to their wounds in the main base camp on the Hal'vii islands. An officer with cropped brown hair held back with a white headband was waiting at the main office complex. She was wearing a generic army officers uniform with no identifying insignia other than her rank badges and an ID card with her photo and a Japanese character (心)
"Kokoro, I presume?" Kah'lad asked as he wrapped a bandage around his arm.
"That is correct. Please follow me."
The trio entered the main administration building into a maze of corridors. As they did so, Kah'lad hanged back a bit.
"So people, what do you think so far?"
"I'm very suspicious," Sha'la smirked, "Section 9 agents don't normally speak to us grunts."
"What about you Friedrick?"

"Good news is that i donīt believe weīre being hearded to execution. Talented as we are, we were wounded and outnumbered. Itīd have being easy enough to kill us in the field and blame Sah'lihm."

As he let the closest to "good news" he had sink on them, he continued:

"However, as Sha'la said, the intelligence corps usually donīt speak to other branches, aside interrogations. And sending us deep on a maze they hold is probably to enhance a feeling of subjugation... With means they want something from us. Probably to perform a task theyīre unable and/or unwilling to do themselves. And whatever is the mission, is important enough to force your section 9 into this course of action, despite the diplomatic implications that messing with an officer of an allied nation might have."

He sighed and concluded:

"So, my analisys of the situation is that while weīre safe for the time being, things donīt loog good, for theyīll ask for something we wonīt want to do, but they wonīt accept no as an answer."

"No offence, but I hope you are wrong..." Kah'lad murmured as the group turned yet another corner to enter a room.
"I can assure you all that the length of the corridors here are not a deliberate attempt to mislead or disorientate. The maze of corridors is merely an artefact of the older architecture of this facility. It was built during the Cold War to be resistant against nuclear attack," Kokoro spoke as she lead them into the room, "And Captain von Richthofen, I can assure you will not be harmed. We have spoken to your superiors about our meeting now. Otherwise we would have isolated you from any discussions."
"Wish I could believe that,"Kah'lad mumbled, "It won't be the first time you lied. Keep your guard up Friedrick."

Kokoro put on a slightly hurt look as she showed the trio to some seats at a table in the room. The room was dimly lit with a projector glowing in one corner. In the opposite corner a man sat in the shadows, his face hidden by a surgical mask.
"Do not mind the gentleman in the room," Kokoro explained, "He is here to ensure I do not say anything that is outwith my clearance."
"Sure," Sha'la mocked, "Or kill us if we say 'no'."
"I can assure you you are all safe," Kokoro replied as she took up a seat at the top of the table.
"You are probably wondering why we brought you here. Well, quite simply, the mission you are all sent on is more complicated than what the Dannistrian Joint-Chiefs of Staff have explained."

The projector clicked into life and a picture of Sah'lihm, a military prison ID photograph, appeared.
"As Private Forr'sith and Lieutenant Hasegawa-Am'ara may know, but possibly not you Captain von Richthofen, Private Sah'lihm was originally assigned to Shiro Academy as part of his bail conditions..."
"And that was a pleasant surprise!" Kah'lad said sarcastically.
"...This was not the entire part of the story..."

The projector clicked again and a schematic plan of the LASTAR AC's AI computer system appeared.
"...As J-COS said, your mission was to deal with a rogue LASTAR AI. However, this was not the whole story either...one of the other army departments, whom I'm not allowed to identify for security reasons, have decided to use a new form of AI computer programming as part of the LASTAR project. The idea was that conventional AI programming would not be suitable with the system we were using, so we decided to copy the brain patterns of an existing individual. We tested several individuals..."
"And let me guess..." Sha'la interjected, "Sah'lihm was one of them, right?"
Friedrick shook his head in disapproval at what he heard.
"And his brain patterns were ultimately unstable and the computer could not cope with them?" Kah'lad uncharacteristically sneered, "Why does this feel like the plot to a bad action film?"

Kokoro shot a grim look to the masked individual. The masked man nodded.
"We did not realise Sah'lihm's mental instability would be an issue for the computer systems. We were more interested in his...unusual combat style...we didn't realise the AC programmed with his pattern would destroy an entire village..."
"Sure..." Kah'lad mocked, "...sure..."
"The two AC's you destroyed earlier were not manned, as you may have guessed. They were both LASTAR AC's. Except one was being remotely controlled by Sah'lihm..."

The projector clicked again to show an animated map.
"At approximately 0736 hours yesterday, Private Sah'lihm escaped from his holding cell at the Dir'nahr AC facility that the Army runs, 10 miles northwest of this base. He cottoned on that the AC's programmed with his AI pattern were not suitable for our use...but suitable for his unique style of anarchy..."
"I'll say..."
"He stole a Type 16 Tornado class AC. A medium type mech designed for long endurance missions in hazardous conditions along with a set of lightweight LASTAR AC's programmed with his AI pattern. They are somewhere in the north of the main Hal'vii landmass here in the Hal'vii islands."
"How many ACs?" Sha'la asked.
"7. You destroyed one of them so he is down to 6."
"You want us to destroy the AC's and stop Sah'lihm, right?" Kah'lad folded his arms.
"We would prefer it if you could keep Sah'lihm alive, if only because it would be easier for...damage control...than if you were to kill him...however we are open to whatever way you wish to deal with him as the priority is to simply stop him."

Kah'lad looked at both Sha'la and Friedrick. They both nodded knowingly.
"Do we have a choice?" Kah'lad asked rhetorically before adding, "We'll need a few minutes to discuss this...alone..."
Kokoro looked at the masked man who nodded again.
"Very well...don't take too long..." she said before she and the masked man left the room. Once they did, the trio huddled together.
"Well, firstly, I think that the picture there is a bug..." Sha'la pointed at a picture of deceased Prime Minister Har'ii Wilson.
"No doubt. And the room is probably bugged to high hell but I don't care..." Kah'lad said, "What do you guys think?"
"They aren't telling us something...I'm not sure what it is but I suspect it's something important," Sha'la smirked.
"What says you Friedrick?"

"I wish i was a telepath..." mused Friedrick as he wondered how much truth Kokoroīs speech had.

As Kah'lad spoke to him, he said:

"You both right. This room is bugged as Sha'la said. Heavily. I can feel so many that isnīt worth the hassle of mindwiping them all, specially given that youīre also right. We donīt have a choice. We canīt let Sah'lihm free, and commanding 6 ACs to multiply his damage potential. If he escape to the Hal'vii islands weīll have blood trail of innocents at best, and a war with the Nahrinese at worst. And that is something our cadets arenīt ready to handle yet..."

He sighed and...

"So, despite the stupidity of whoever decided that Sah'lihm was a good role model to their new AI, i vote for going out and cleaning their mess before Sah'lihm destroy another town. And i agree with Sha'la. Theyīre hiding something important. Probably linked to their request of keeping Sah'lihm alive, for nothing would to better for damage control than put down that madman for good."

Friedrick stared Kah'lad for a few moments and said:

"Kah'lad, my friend. Since we have to inform them of our conditions, i guess the time for deciding is now. I plan to kill Sah'lihm. But you have more right over this issue than me so, if you want to settle this your way, iīll respect your wish."

Kah'lad nodded. He sat in silence deep in thought for several minutes while Sha'la tried to keep herself occupied by balancing a pen on her nose. Kah'lad then nodded at her and Friedrick.

"I've given Sah'lihm enough chances to reform. I think it's time we showed him we are serious," he hinted to Friedrick and Sha'la. They both nodded knowingly.
"I'll let the spooks know..." he said as he got up to exit the room. As he opened the door, he found Kokoro and her superior deep in concerned sounding conversation.

"I don't know why you are so worried," he stated calmly, "You had so many audio and video bugs in that room you couldn't sneeze without you spooks thinking it was a secret code."
Kokoro and her superior returned to the room.
"So, have you made up your mind?" Kokoro asked.
"Sah'lihm is a dangerous man. You should not have used him for this project. You should not have even thought of his name," Kah'lad stated firmly, "I've known him for a long time. Each time the top brass tried to do some fancy thing involving him I've had to clean up the mess."
Kah'lad circled the table slowly.
"I'll help deal with Sah'lihm. Not because of any moral obligation. Not because of any personal vendetta. But purely because I do not have the faith to believe you will be able to handle it any better."

Kokoro nodded.
"I'm sorry that you think of us as such. But we won't disagree that we could've dealt with the situation better."
"Indeed. I cannot make any guarantees on Sah'lihm's survival. My primary orders as J-COS stated are simply to put an end to the situation. That is all."
Before Kah'lad could say anything else, the base shook violently, throwing everyone to the floor.

"Oww..." Sha'la murmured as she got up first, "I get the feeling Sah'lihm may not let us leave without fighting him..."
Kah'lad helped everyone else up.
"Maybe. Or maybe that was an earthquake..."

Kokoro grabbed the phone from the desk and started dialling frantically.
"Operative Kokoro. What is going on?"
"We are under attack ma'am! 4 AC's assaulting the main compound. We are giving them everything we got."
"Try to hold on. I'll call for back up."
"Yes ma'am!"
Kokoro replaced the handset.
"4 AC's attacking outside."
"I heard. C'mon guys..." Kah'lad said as he turned to leave.
"Wait...we got one little equaliser that may be useful..." Kokoro said.
Kah'lad looked at Sha'la and Friedrick in surprise.
"It's in the underground AC hangar along with your own AC's."
"Why do I have a bad feeling about this?" Kah'lad moaned before relenting, "OK, what is it?..."
The lift car shook about as more explosions rumbled the base further.
"Forgive us for making the situation sound like a bad action B-movie, but this is our last trump card against Sah'lihm," Kokoro explained inbetween shaking.
"Does it matter?!" Sha'la mocked, "The way I see it he'll either kill us or we kill him. Fancy weapons or not."
"Sha'la has a point," Friedrick stated. Kah'lad nodded.
"For all the flashy guns in the world they'll make no difference if we can't use them effectively."
"Hopefully you will," Kokoro said as the lift car finally stopped. The group then ran over to the AC hangar. There stood Friedrick's and Sha'la's repaired AC's. One AC was covered in a tarpaulin.

"I assume that is to be my new toy?" Kah'lad asked sarcastically.
"We deemed your light AC from the last operation to be unsuitable," Kokoro stated, "This may help even the odds against Sah'lihm."
The tarpaulin was removed and revealed a white mech with wing ribs attached to the back. Kah'lad smirked.
"Ne'valu...I should've guessed..."
"I assume you have heard of the Next-Generation Armored Core prototype before?" Kokoro asked.
"I have. It was this mount that I used to battle Sah'lihm back in that incident in Tyrsis..."

Kah'lad was interrupted by another rumbling.
"We haven't got much time. This base will be razed to the ground if you don't stop those other Armored Cores. Get prepped and we'll launch you with the catapult elevator. I'll hook myself up to the Lynx control room upstairs."
"Why do I not like the sound of this?" Kah'lad muttered...
"OK...this Ne'valu prototype is not exactly the same one you used Private. This one has had significant refinements made to it. Those wing ribs are not just to aid flight. They are electron lasers which can do a lot of damage if you aim them correctly," Kokoro instructed the group as the mechs were loaded onto something akin to a rocket sled. Kah'lad rolled his eyes.
"Well, I'm not sure if they will be any use in these conditions as there is a high level of snow out there. And the weather service indicates a blizzard going on right now."
"We hope though it will help. As for you, Captain von Richthofen, we made a slight modification to your Type 5 AC. We added on some of the experimental ablative armour you used back in Tyrsis. It's a more refined model of the armour though. It won't make you invincible but it is a lot tougher than regular armour. Use it wisely."
"Just like in Tyrsis," Friedrick remarked.
"Lieutenant Hasegawa-Am'ara. You should find you AC now has a bit more ammo than earlier. We bolted on some storage pods on the shoulders to suit your style of combat."
"Fine by me!" Sha'la responded cheefully, "Let's lock and load boys!"
"Hal'vo be with you all," Kokoro said before counting the trio down. Then there was a violent jolt as the lift was sent skywards. At the top, a large shutter opened and the three Ravens found themselves outside.

"OK, no where is that son of a gun?" Sha'la mused.
"Keep on your toes guys. He could be anywhere," Kah'lad said, looking around the burnt wrecks of various vehicles as he did so.
"Uh oh..." Sha'la pointed at the far corner of the base, "We have company!" she said in her sing-song manner.

At the far end of the base stood 4 mechs. Three of them were coloured white and despite their thin spindly appearance were carrying several missile tubes. The fourth mech was coloured black and had 2 wing attachments on it's back. It was smaller and gant looking compared to the others.
"I got a bad feeling about this," Kah'lad said.
"Watch it everyone. I don't recall Sah'lihm being in anything but the Type 16 Tornado class AC."
"Looks like your intel is wrong, assuming that is him," Sha'la mocked.

The black AC's turned around. Kah'lad was then hailed by the mech. Hesitantly, he answered the radio call.
"Ah...Kah'lad...I see you have come out to play..." Sah'lihm spoke gleefully through the radio. Kah'lad frowned.
"Is you idea of fun mass murder on a Government facility?"
"They were in my way."
"And that gave you the right to kill them?"
"Yes it does. Especially if they won't let me see you."
"Shame I can't say the same about you..."
"Heh. Pity."

Kah'lad switched back to Friedrick and Sha'la.
"Encryption mode. Use the most secure cipher you got. I don't know if he has compromised those yet. When he moves, shoot him with everything you've got."
"Conferring with your team mates I take it?" Sah'lihm asked, "I can't hear what is going on but I can tell...no matter..."
Sah'lihm postured his AC into an attack stance.
"Target verified...commencing hostilities..."

Upon Kah'lad request for encryption, Friedrick focused his mind through his AC comm until it reached Kah'lad and Sha'laīs ACs.

"This much i can do for us, Kah'lad. There is no CPU more complex than the human mind. Sah'lihm wonīt hear us."

As the white ACs launch a initial salvo under its boss command, Friedrick continues

"Guess he wonīt give us time to talk anymore, since we cut him off the chat... Kah'lad, lasers are terrific weapons, i know myself that from Tyrsis. But itīll get refracted by the snowfall. We can go the easier way and fight them inside, but thisīll doom the section 9 personal, or we can push them outside and fight without our best weapon. Your call."

"Sah'lihm has killed enough. Weīll end this outside the base." answers Kah'lad

"You already knew he would say that, didnīt you?" comments playfully Sha'la, despite the fact the approaching ACīs were starting to hit their mark

"Yeah. The honourable way it is. Just hope those spooks prove themselves worthy... I have a plan, now..."

And Sah'lihmīs AC dashes close to them, firing wildly yet accurately at them, tooking them by surprise, but...

"Sha'la, let loose everything you have. Aim straight ahead of us! Kah'lad, follow me. Once weīre outside, heīs yours. Weīll care of the Lastars.

As Sha'la fired a absurd salvo of bullets and missiles, the enemy ACs are caught off-balance by a few glancing shot, and a hole to the outside, large enough for them, is formed as the bulk of the salvo connects with the wall.

"Now!" Friedrick screams as he over boost his heavy AC, tackling Sah'lihm.

In the split-second heīd need to escape, Friedrick grapples Sah'lihmīs AC and continues the charge.
Realizing that his AC didnīt have the raw strenght of a Type 5, Sah'lihm decides to enjoy the moment, stabbing Friedrick AC where the vitals would be in a human.

Feeling every blow as if were on his flesh, Friedrick realizes through the pain that Sah'lihm knows heīs feeling his AC "pain", and is thrusting to maximize it.

Luckly, the ablative armor holds much of the attack, allowing Friedrick to fall outside the base still holding Sah'lihm. Unsurprisingly, the white ACs follow them, and so do Sha'la and Kah'lad.

"Grah!" Sah'lihm shouted as Friedrick forced him onto the ground. Despite his attempts to disable Friedrick's AC with his laser blade, the stabbing attempts seemed to have little effect.
"You are a good fighter, Captain von Richthofen" Sah'lihm commented, "It is a shame we are fighting for opposing sides..."

Sah'lihm commanded the LASTAR AC's to concentrate their attacks on Friedrick before forcing his own mech to jump into the air. "Have at you!"
The "wing" attachments on his AC unfurled to reveal several directed energy cannons. He proceeded to fire them all at Kah'lad.
"Look out!" shouted Kokoro over the radio.
Kah'lad quickly dodged the energy beams, which impacted against a damaged fuel tanker, causing it to explode.
"Still got it, old friend..." Sah'lihm hissed.

Another explosion rocked the ground. This time it was from the group of LASTAR AC's. Friedrick and Sha'la managed to tear through them very easily despite being outnumbered.
"Now now now...this is rather unfair," Sah'lihm said mockingly as Friedrick walked his AC towards him, "3 against 1 isn't fair..."
Kah'lad frowned.
"Watch yourself guys...he is up to something...aside from the lasers..."

As the trio moved forward, Sah'lihm jerked his AC violently to the left, firing more energy blasts at them. Sha'la responded by letting off a volley of missiles at him, topping the mech over.
"Urgh..." he moaned as he tried to help himself up. As he did so, the trio repositioned themselves.

"I got some more information on the AC Private Sah'lihm's AC. He seems to be piloting a Type 77 Aberdeen Class Chassis AC with a prototype IBIS extension."
"IBIS?" Kah'lad asked as Sah'lihm stood up.
"Integrated Battle Information System. Basically an upgraded version of the VR cockpit system you saw him use in the incident in Tyrsis."
"Let me guess, no antenna to shoot at this time?"
"I'm afraid not. The corrected the weaknesses in the last prototype."
"Great..." Kah'lad growled as he dodged another round of laser blasts from Sah'lihm. Friedrick managed to land a blow with his own blade as Sah'lihm tried to dodge himself.

"Friedrick, lure him over to the fuel storage depot to your right...I got an idea," Kah'lad said, "Sha'la, load up another round of missiles...let's hope this works..."

OOC: Wow. Nearly 2 months of absence. Sorry, Dann... But at least i got a new job by giving it all on RL!

"Heīll be there, Kah'lad. But make it worth. The trick iīll use now wonīt fool a pilot of his caliber twice..."

And then Friedrick forced Sah'lihm into a defensive tactic by hacking at him like a berserk. A move twice as surprising if one consider his sniper background.

Obviously, such unrefined tactic allowed Sah'lihm to land a few shots in a fighthing retreat, blasting away the few ablative armor that remained on Friedrick AC.

As they got close to the fuel depot, Sah'lihm understood the plan, giving how Friedrick was obviously goading him there. But when they were just a few meters away from the target, Friedrick striked Sah'lihm with his AC hand instad of the blade, in the very moment that Sah'lihm started his boosters forward to flee the trap...

...and he fled backwards, getting near on top of said depot.

Friedrick screamed "Now!" with his last strength, for the reason for such a novice mistake on Sah'lihmīs part was only one. THe open palm attack he received was only to link Friedrick with his foe machine, allowing him to briefly reverse its commands through psionics. A move exceedingly exausting for one that spent so much to fight this long at a plus raven level.

OOC: Better late than never Drak. XD

IC: Kah'lad watched as Friedrick struggled with Sah'lihm, forcing him into the area of the fuel depot. His heart sank when it looked like Sah'lihm was about to escape, only to suddenly fly towards the depot's storage tanks.
"Now!" shouted Friedrick over the radio. Kah'lad snapped out of his confused stupor.
"Sha'la!"
"I'm on it! Locked on!"
"FIRE AT WILL!"
"ALL AWAY!"

Sha'la's AC popped open up all the launcher tubes, firing off a massive wave of missiles towards the fuel tanks in the depot. Sah'lihm's voice betrayed a fearful tone as he demanded, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING? KAH'LAD!!!...ARRRGGHH...!!"

The radio cut off abruptly as the missiles struck the depot's fuel tanks, causing them to explode in sympathetic fashion, engulfing Sah'lihm's AC in a massive fireball. Several more fuel tanks exploded as the fire spread.
"Out out out!" Kah'lad shouted. He manoeuvred his AC towards Friedrick's right and dragged him and his mech away on full boost power. Sha'la moved to his right and followed suit just as the fire spread to the entire depot.

"Something tells me that might be an expensive repair bill," Sha'la sardonically noted as the three touched down several hundred yards away.
"I'm not paying," Kah'lad drily noted, "You OK Friedrick?"
"I'll live. Did we get him?" Friedrick asked.
"Well let's put it this way, if he lived through that, he won't be in any shape to fight for the foreseeable future," Sha'la pointed at the inferno contrasting against the white snow.

The radio crackled into life suddenly as Kokoro hailed the trio.
"Kokoro to Private Forr'sith, confirm your status, over."
"Forr'sith here," Kah'lad calmly responded, "I'm OK. Captain von Richthoffen sustained some damage to his AC and he is injured himself but otherwise OK. Lieutenant Hasegawa-Am'ara is also OK but she is out of long range ammo. Private Sah'lihm's status...unknown at this time...over."
There was a long pause.
"Understood. We are sending a fire rescue team to the fuel depot. The unmanned LASTAR AC's stood down when we heard the explosion. I take it that was you right? Please check the area. I'm uploading an updated schematic of the area to your AC's computers. Confirm Private Sah'lihm's status. Out."

Sha'la shrugged.
"The spooks disappointed he may be dead I take it?" she said as Kah'lad attempted some running repairs on Friedrick's AC with a field repair kit.
"It isn't much but you should be able to limp to the depot then back to base on that, assuming they don't spend a transport helicopter to us. Ready all? Keep your guard up..."
The charred remains of the depot told most of the story as the trio approached.

"Dead?" Sha'la asked.
"Never can tell with Sah'lihm. He's a stubborn sonova..."

Kah'lad was interrupted by a loud metallic crunching, followed by metallic banging.
"Look out! Stay sharp people!"
A pile of rubble rose and fell to the side to reveal Sah'lihm's IBIS AC.
"DAMMIT!" Kah'lad shouted. Everyone took aim with whatever remaining weapons they had. The IBIS AC looked worse for wear, taking several laboured steps before falling onto the ground head first.

Kah'lad looked on in some confusion as the mech's access hatch opened and Sah'lihm tumbled out, his head covered in blood, wires and multiple scars.
"Kah...lad..." he managed to gasp, reaching up with his blood soaked right hand at Kah'lad's mech.
Kah'lad looked on unamused.
"Yes?" he sighed.
"We...we are both...not so different...ya'know?...we are...both killers...you just try to hide...under the pretence...of being...morally...superio..." Sah'lihm's laboured speech was cut off by Kah'lad's curt rebuttal.
"Save it for Hal'vo, Hannibal Lecture! I've heard far too many 'Reason you suck' speeches from you! You want to discuss the rights and wrongs of my, or indeed your own, actions. Save it for the next life."

Kah'lad armed the laser cannons directly at Sah'lihm.
"So...you are...willing to...shoot an...unarmed man...go...ahead...I...dare...you..."
Kah'lad's finger hovered over the trigger, then he relaxed his grip and folded the cannons away. He turned the mech 180 degrees. Sah'lihm smirk dissolved into disappointment as Kah'lad began to walk away.
"Kah'lad?" Sha'la and Friedrick asked.
"I don't have to kill him...but I don't have to help him either...Let's go people. Sah'lihm's a lost cause."
"You...can't...leave...you...are...not...finished...neither...am..."
As the trio slowly wandered away, the blizzard picked up again. Sah'lihm's blood trickled over the white snow as he struggled to finish his sentence.
"...I..."
There was a soft thud as he collapsed into the snow. Kah'lad paused briefly before continuing on his way...

At the debrief, there was a somewhat confused atmosphere as several officers looked through the reports and data logs from the group. Kokoro sat at one end of the table along with her immediate nameless superior along with three generals from the Joint-Chiefs of Staff. At the other end sat Kah'lad, Friedrick, Sha'la and Colonel Jackson, who flew out to the islands on special request. After some deliberation amongst Kokoro, her superior and the members of J-COS, Kokoro turned back to the group.

"Well, we would like to hear your comments first regarding the operation, starting with you, Captain von Richthoffen. Do not worry. This is not a court martial. We are simply trying to ascertain the events that occurred during this operation. Private Sah'lihm jammed some of our telemetry equipment so we do not have the full story here, so to speak."

OOC: Merry Christmas!!!

Friedrick saluted to the brass and replied looking to them:

"Understood. Iīd like to start by saying that more important than the operation itself were the unfortunate decisions that led to its need.
First, an AC is a weapon too powerful to be operated without human supervision. If we had pilots on those LASTARS, much of this tragedy would have being avoided.
And then... Its time to stop trying to use Sah'lihm. Heīs a mad dog and its the third time that giving him power led to the death of innocents. If we was in prison, or dead, as he should, nothing would have happened. And if somehow he survived this time, i assure you that using him again will end in more innocent blood stains on the hands of whoever gives the order..."

As the now unconfortable generals seemed ready to lash out at this near confrontation, Friedrick turned to Kokoro and continued:

"... but i digress.
Regarding the operation itself, i believe it worked as well as it could given the circunstances...
We were sent as soon as possible, and with enough equipment to get the job done. No wrong here. I wish we could have saved that village, but... couldnīt be done.
The intel was flawed, or else we wouldnīt have being ambushed twice... But section 9 aid with repairs at least allowed us to get through it with operationals ACs.
In the end, we managed to takedown Sah'lihm and the LASTARs, although casualties among base personal were unavoidable.
On the LASTARs itself, Lt.Hasegawa and i took them down, while out-numbered and damaged, with enough ease to prove they are yet to be a match to a raven.
And about Sah'lihm, he was a step ahead every time but the end. Werenīt for Pvt. Forr'sith quick thinking he could have escaped with his AC, or even won, as he was a elite pilot, rested and uninjuried, who had a state-of-art AC.
But how he had so much advantage on us? My opinion... He had inside help. The job of finding out who and why is beyond me...No spook here. But he couldnīt have done it all alone. Even if he was both a master spy and genius tech on top of plus raven, setting us up like this is just too much job for a single man."

After saying it all, Friedrick stopped to wait further questions.

"Thank you, that is all Captain von Richthoffen," Kokoro said. After some writing down, she turned to Sha'la.
"Lieutenant Hasegawa-Am'ara, do you have anything to add?"

Sha'la gave an uncharacteristically grim look on her face before smirking.
"I have nothing to add to what Captain von Richthoffen said, other than to note that there was a disturbing lack of any real back up. And as Captain von Richthoffen pointed out, the flawed intel was of little help. I would recommend that any experiments with regards to advanced technology be carried out using psychologically stable subjects from this point onwards. That is all I have to say on the matter."
"Very well," Kokoro said before writing down more records. She then turned to Kah'lad.
"Private Forr'sith. As commander of the operation, you are entitled to the last word."

Kah'lad nodded.
"My main concern is that we have been kept in the dark from day one of this operation. Our intel was flawed, as Captain von Richthoffen pointed out, the initial operation only succeeded due to outside intervention from Section 9, which was fortunate for us and the idea that a convicted serviceman, instead of being dishonourably discharged, would be used as a subject for an experiment involving advanced and highly dangerous equipment, is frankly mind boggling! I don't know who approved of this plan but it does question the intelligence and ability of the personnel in the R&D department. In conclusion, I hope that lessons will be learned from this incident."
"Thank you, Private Forr'sith."

Kokoro and the other officers deliberated for several minutes before she stood up to speak again.
"At the request of General F'rousahr from the Joint-Chiefs of Staff, he will deliver his verdict."
One of the Generals stood up.
"After some deliberation, we have come to the conclusion that, as far as we are concerned, Private Our'ii Sah'lihm is solely responsible for the following charges. Three counts of Insubordination, two counts of Gross misconduct, 50 confirmed counts of murder and another unconfirmed 245 counts of either murder or manslaughter. An official inquiry into his activities will be held in due course, but out preliminary findings allow us to give Private Sah'lihm a posthumous dishonourable discharge."

The General paused before continuing.
"However, due to the nature of some of the research being carried out, along with the classification of some of the files involved, the official version of events, as detailed to the public, will be that the village and the base were attacked by a rogue unmanned AC, as initially detailed to you, until such a time where it is deemed possible to release the actual version of events without compromising national security. In other words, what has been discussed here stays in this room. Understood?"

Sha'la nodded. Friedrick and Kah'lad both frowned in disapproval, but Kah'lad eventually answered "Understood sir."

As Kah'lad agreed with the brass terms, Friedrick thought that maybe he could still extract something good out of this mess...

"I really shouldnīt be doing this so soon but..." He thought before sending a telepathic link to Kah'lad.

In Kah'lad mind, Friedrick voice echoed among static

"Hey, Kah'lad, itīs me, Friedrick. One, pretend nothing is happening. We donīt wanīt to scare the generals. Two, this is just telepathy. Iīm not reading your mind, feelings or anything, and even so, if you want, iīll leave now."

As Kah'lad remained "silent" he continued

"I had to ask like this because we should strike the iron while its still hot... So the question is, do you want to be promoted? You surely more than deserve it, and there is no best time to request it than when weīre helping cover their mess. And besides, iīll be the one asking, so thereīll be no heat on you."

Kah'lad remained silent, listening to both Friedrick in his mind and the Generals wrapping up the meeting by way of their generic rambling on about the importance of preventing the public from panicking and their appreciation of keeping quiet about the incident.

"I think we best not mention it at all," Kah'lad responded back to Friedrick in his mind, "As much as I'm annoyed at the lack of any real appreciation in cleaning up everyone's mess, I'm used to it by now. After all, I was not a willing participant in the Plus Raven project in the first place."

"...there is one other thing..." one of the General's interrupted the trio just as they were about to leave.
"Hmm?" Kah'lad looked on as Kokoro stepped forward.
"We are sorry that we cannot hold and official ceremony for you three. But we appreciate the efforts you have all made regarding this situation and decided to award you all these."

Kokoro produced several medal boxes.
"For miscellaneous services to the Dannistrian Armred Forces."
She saluted and dismissed the three. Outside Kah'lad, Sha'la and Friedrick opened up the boxes.
"Well...For miscellaneous services indeed," Kah'lad remarked as he held up a Distinguished Service Order.
"Pretty high ranking medal there Kah'lad!" Sha'la remarked as she held up her Distinguished Service Cross, "Looks like Friedrick got a DSC as well."
"Hmm...indeed," Kah'lad remarked, "They don't give out DSO's lightly. And Friedrick, you should be proud. Not many get a DSC. You'll be the first foreign serviceman to get one from the Dannistrian Military. Most don't even get such a thing."
"Well, what do we do now?" Sha'la asked.
"Head back home for now. The General's stated that Friedrick and I will be resuming teaching those Raven cadets. What about you?"
"I'll be probably heading back to Shiro to annoy Nee'la. I wonder what she is doing now?" Sha'la wondered to herself as she pinned the medal proudly on her jacket.

Kah'lad rolled his eyes at Friedrick.

Back again, Dann!

Friedrick smiled as Kah'lad and Sha'la commented on their future and spoke:

"Iīm more than proud, Kah'lad. Iīm honored. Iīll always treasure this DSC."

and he turned to Sha'la: "Shiro? Dangerous place... I heard it became a tradition of us Drakkengardi to pick a fight with the FPS army on the 1st day there. Well, best of luck. And sorry for what i said earlier about your behavior. You proved yourself a superb soldier and was a pleasure to fight at your side."

"Now letīs move too, Kah'lad. Those cadets probably forgot about Nahris by now, so we should give them something else to worry about..."

As her watch was about to end, Ai wondered where Friedrick could be, and what could be taking so long to solve...

"I hope heīs okay" she whispered, and Medkit, lurking nearby, promptly answered: "Our alpha always came back, master!"
To that she smiled and patted Medkit saying "Goodboy... Letīs wake Fahl'ow and Spencer. Itīs their turn now."
