I will open this thread for any questions or discussions concerning my campaign for Delegacy. Please feel free to ask anything and I shall respond as soon as possible. Note: I am also working on my typing up my proposal at this moment, so bare with me for a few and I will explain my stance in these recent elections.![]() --------- DFD's Campaign Thread: Building Stronger Communities ![]() Campaign Objectives
Community ![]() As you can probably guess, this is the primary focus of my campaign in TEP. And as others know, this is a goal I have been working on since before my time in this region and community. I would like to take a brief moment, if I may, to explain myself to those who may not know me. I first became interested in community construction after I witnessed the collapse of a community I held dear and near to my heart in this game. The slow and agonizing death of The Rejected Realms community had deeply impacted my focus on the game. I spent at least two years exploring the issue in depth trying to understand the mechanisms that lead to the death of the community. What I have concluded is that there seem to be a few crucial elements that are necessary for the proper function and existence of a strong cohesive online community. Elements of a Strong Online Community
The community has a common goal and focus that unites its members. While this element is the easiest to accomplish, it is also the most difficult to maintain in a changing community. TEP's community was brought together and held together through a common interest in Role Playing. More recently however that common theme had become blurred and obscured. While TEP still maintains an active and outgoing RP community, other interests have begun to crop up and take a firm hold in the community; such as a higher level and interest in TEP politics and WA involvement. No longer can we attempt to bind the community through a common interest in Role Playing alone. One of my objectives is to reunite us all with a common purpose for involvement. Because I value each aspect* of the game and see how well members with more awareness of the various NS aspects interact with other areas, I have chosen to try to integrate more community members into those various aspects. By bridging the gaps between each separate NS aspect, I hope to establish a more common purpose of involvement between regional members. * When I refer to NS aspects I am discussing the separate activities of the game such as: RP'ing, the WA, Gameplay, General, etc... Irreplaceable roles exist within the community. Upon deeper contemplation and analysis, I have found that those regional communities that were most successful had irreplaceable roles. Those irreplaceable roles are members who partake on a role that serves the community, such as The Voice of Reason: a person who always seems to be level-headed and contemplative, who always seems to propose the best solution to any given problem, The Leader: a person who steps up first and partakes on a task, who seems to inspire involvement by their actions, The Loyal: a person who is dedicated to the region through and through, who will not quit on the region even when all else seems lost, The Jester: a person who seems to always make light of intense situations and who provides a moment of appropriate comic relief, and The Action: a person who seems to always to have something for everyone to do, who seems to keep the community revved up and working towards a common goal. Now keep in mind that these roles are not limited; however, there are a few roles that are crucial for a region to succeed, such being the above mentioned. Furthermore, many people can partake on the roles, but the roles tend to be highly associated with a person in the region who seems to best embody that concept. This is not an exact terminology or definition, so bare with me, but this is the basic concept roughly fleshed out. My goal in TEP is to re-establish some of these roles. Every region tends to have them at any given point; however, as people leave the game, the gap left by their irreplaceable roles may often go unfilled and thus lead to the death of the community. It is my hope to see members arise into their own respective irreplaceable roles, which will be accomplished through the other elements of a cohesive community. The community exists beyond the game. Beyond the game, there must be a level of interaction that exists between members, albeit messenger, IRC, etc... This is a crucial element that interacts with and helps refine the other elements of strong communities. I hope to achieve a community that exists beyond the game by bringing people close together through other means of communication outside of the region. Already, we have begun to have more regional involved chats. I do hope to try to keep open lines of communication between all members and perhaps utilizing Chatzy more often so that those who are unable to obtain messengers are not left out of discussion. I know we have various means of keeping communicated, but it is a goal of mine to bring the community closer together through the use of other mechanisms. Members are seen as real people, not personas. Another necessary element to successful online communities requires that members be seen as a real person rather than a persona. Through my observations, personas seemed to foster distrust. I have found that people tend to be unable to really trust a persona since part of them views it not as real person and thus incapable of becoming a confidante. Seeing a member as a real person, behind the screen, made it more difficult for people to intentionally 'hurt' another player. Because real people playing the game were seen, the community grew stronger, became more involved, and thus was successful in the game. As such, one of the issues I really have been working on is trying to bring out the person behind the nation. Already it has been such a wonderful and remarkable experience seeing such amazing people come to together to play this game. And those people have become great friends through my time here. I hope to continue to see the real people behind the game so that we may develop a community built on trust and mutual respect, rather than one of distrust and aversion. With that said, the existence of online communities naturally deteriorates with time, as evidenced in the cycle below: ![]() It is therefore my goal to try to keep a bulk of our community, in the orange level of the cycle. Promoting people to become regulars keeps us most active as a community and yields the most success of the community, as I have concluded in my understanding of online communities. Leadership While the delegate position is an important public figure to our community, I do not believe that at any given point the delegate should maintain a sense of absolute control over the region. The delegate of TEP exists to serve the community; it is the representative face and voice of this region chosen by the Citizens of TEP. I firmly believe that the moment the delegate is associated as being the power of the region, the delegate has failed our region. Therefore, one of my goals is to deconstruct the notion that the delegate is power and instead focus on promoting the idea that the delegate exists to serve. The model I have chosen as a visual representation of my leadership style depicts no one person being central to our community. Each green figure is representative of the three branches of our government: The Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. Each branch stands alone but interacts not only with each other but also with every member of the community (TEP) and outer community (other NS regions). I believe this approach will lead to a healthier, more interactive community of NS. Activity Activity has always been an NS abstraction. We must remember this when confronting this issue. Activity is so broad in NS and we need to decide which definition and approach we would like to address. For the purpose of discussion, activity will be defined as the level of interaction between players of TEP's community. I saved this issue to discuss because while it is important, there is little any one of us can do short term to address this issue. I also believe this has been the failure of many leaders in NS when they embark on addressing this issue with short-term methods which inevitably fail. My goal to increase activity will not be seen in a term of delegacy. I will be upfront about that. Rather, I will focus more on developing the community, increasing involvement, and combating apathy. By giving people a reason to log onto TEP and partake in regional events, I hope to counter inactivity. Otherwise, anything else we attempt to do to increase activity will fail. Do know though that this has been a long and arduous task which I have been working on since my involvement back in The Empire and will continue to work on throughout my stay in TEP. Thank you for your time! DFD ![]() |

what is your current position on the TEP government? Would you change the duties, term length, or amount of times someone can run for the same office? If Todd, let's say, wanted to run for a third term, but not 3 consecutive terms. Do you think that is fair? |

I believe TEP's government had become too dependent on the role of a delegate. I saw many people in this region become too comfortable assuming that the delegate would take care of it all because the delegate was unable to delegate tasks to other members. I have no authority to change the duties, term length, or time of delegacy within TEP. It is the Magisteriums job to define those definitions or limitations and being that I am not a Magister, I do not have the ability to change those aspects. If I were to become delegate, I trust the Magisters to decide what they believe is best for the region and will fully support the decisions that they make. I hope that helps answer your question! ![]() |

As a delegate candidate, I do not have a plan to improve RP. Again, I fear one of the ruts our region fell into was placing too much emphasis and importance on the delegate to solve regional problems. The delegate should not be seen as an all powerful presence within the region. Do I personally have a plan to improve RP? Absolutely, and I have been working on it for a while. In fact, my EXILED thread is one such idea being tested now. But in no way, shape, or form is that related to the delegacy position.![]() |

Every now and then it happens that the "new king" feels the need to wipe away memories of the "old king". It's something called "damnatio memoriae", i.e. whatever the former head of state has accomplished, it's suddenly described as rubbish and/or wiped away. The former ruler himself, where still alive, becomes a "persona not grata" and (either implicitly or expressly) invited to leave the region, as his/her presence would be too problematic to handle. Would this happen with Todd, should you be elected? |

How do you plan to take up the business of voting on WA proposals? Kandarin proposed that we should vote and discuss on proposals that are in the queue to combat early voting regions. Would you do this? Edit: to give credit where credit is due. |

I do not believe that I would, or so I rather hope I would not wipe out his existence, should he of course choose to stay. If I were to become delegate, I would make Todd a Vizier. We discussed this in length via MSN a few days before the delegate elections when I told him my intention to run. Todd knows my intentions in running being that this was discussed privately already. It is also why I am very disappointed in his approach to rig the elections in his favor after several discussions about the need for the region, not his friends, to decide what they feel they want and need. What I am most concerned about is this question that I pose to the region, "Do you even want a delegate change?" If you cannot answer this, I do not want your support in this election. Do not vote for me if you do not believe there needs to be a new delegate. Based on a few observations, I see that the region does not seem to want a delegate change, and therefore, my intention to run is a moot point and I am bound to fail when the region does not want a change of delegates to begin with. I really do ask that the region seriously consider this issue. ![]() |

If I am not mistaken, it was actually Kandarin who proposed voting on issues in queue and not Todd. Kandarin has been more WA oriented and I am very much inclined to believe that this was originally Kandarin's idea and believe he deserves credit for his own ideas. ![]() As for my opinion of the issue, as a delegate candidate, I intend to work with regional members on these issues and allow them to solve the matter as they see best. Again, I really do believe we as region placed way too much significance on the delegate to solve regional problems. We have come to expect that the delegate is responsible for regional issues and I feel that mindset must be corrected. However, since the community seems to want my personal opinion of such matters, I will say that my opinion on this issue is varied. Initially, I had thought it was a wonderful idea. It seems to have much potential to work well and will help keep WA votes more fair and accurate. However, it does have inherent flaws built into the system, such as the need for a very active WA sector in TEP and I am not sure if we as a region would be able to actively do this. Do know though that one of my priority tasks is to give as much power back to the people of this region. I realize we have all come to expect the delegate to seize the reigns, and yes, we need an active and involved delegate, but not an omnipotent one. I also realize that attempting to bring back power to the people, so to speak, is a very rough and rocky road; placing expectations on members when there were none will no doubt not go without a flaw, but I believe it must be done. I again hope this answers your question. If not, feel free to ask me to elaborate in an area. ![]() |

No offense to Todd or anything but I think a change in delegates would be good for the region. That doesn't mean that i think Todd was a bad delegate, I'm only saying that having no sort of change leads to stagnation. Please keep running for the spot DFD. btw: i changed my other post to say kandarin brought up the idea. I truly had no idea it was his idea and must have missed it. I apologize. |

I do understand your question, but I am also showing the inherent mindset our region has adapted and how I believe that is dangerous to think in such terms. We trusted the Magisterium to take the reigns on these issues when we developed the Concordat and therefore, we must now trust that this is their task and their responsibility. As such, my opinion on this issue will be addressed from an Arbiter's standpoint, which is my current role in the region. As an Arbiter, I have come to believe it is necessary to place terms on the delegacy. When this issue was first addressed about a year ago, I did not feel this was an issue that would be necessary, but I have come to see the error in my thinking. By not having terms for delegacy, we close off fresh thought and limit regional progress. Furthermore, there becomes the issue of a delegate gaining too much influence and thus becoming untouchable, making the delegate more apt and capable of going rogue and discarding the rules of the system should the delegate desire such a move. This must be prevented and if terms is the way to ensure that it, I firmly support them. Again, my role has been protection of the region and interpreting/defending the Concordat, so in the stance that delegate terms might help protect our region, then yes, I believe it wise to limit the term length of delegacy. ![]() |

I am also going to make a another request. This election seems more and more about our previous delegate and keeps digressing from the point of this campaign. While I respect Todd and the efforts and hard work that I personally know he labored and poured into this region, this is now the time to discuss a new delegate. I am not Todd. I will not be Todd. And if the region cannot relinquish the idea of Todd in this election, I should not be here right now. With that said, I ask that you consider my approach to the campaign and my policies, rather than my views of Todd and how things effect him. That is not the point of this campaign since he is not my current competition. ![]() |

you know what, i have sat by idly long enough, and i'm coming out of character to write this simply because it's easier for me. ok, let's be logical and look at the facts. did todd ask me to join ns and vote for him in the upcoming elections? sure. we all know that, and he has since admitted to it. he has apologised, and the response has been well positive from a good number of members who replied. truth be told, i have been on ns in the past and had 3 nations when i was a freshman in college (a few years ago). i need not be explained how things work in this region. i am not well-versed, but familiar. however, this all being said, i would like to remind the people of the region that i am my own entity, which includes my own brain. just because todd asked me to join ns does not mean that i was forced to vote for him. and i think that my reasons for staying this long have outweighed the "so and so just came here to vote for him" argument. todd may be powerful. but he cannot MAKE me, or any member, do anything. that is my own volition. and i think that's a point that certain members around these parts are voluntarily ignoring. so my question to the new candidate is - why is this even an issue? several members said that todd's apology was, in more or less words, making a mountain out of a molehill. why add fuel to the fire? if you want members to not associate your run with todd... that's up to you. |

My main concern with any delegate is the amount of power they wield over the nations in the region. Between the nastiness in TEP in December '08 and the recent debacle in TNP, I worry about the stability of any feeder delegate. What kind of assurances can you give those of us who are in NationStates merely to watch our nations grow that we will be left in peace in the region that we've chosen? How well do you understand the issues of raiding and defending against raiding? Will you protect the rights of those nations in TEP who choose not to join WA, roleplay, or any other system? |

Thank you for addressing this concern, as it is a very serious issue for feeders! First, I have already been working with a very active and dedicated group of TEP'ers who are working on dismantling power of the delegate. The delegate is a position that is meant to vote in the WA and serve our community. As we have well established, I firmly believe that it had been given too much responsibility, power, and subsequently potential of abuse. Let me explain some of my deeper goals. If I were to become delegate, I plan on encouraging dedicated TEP'ers to become more active in the region by swapping and holding influence thus making it more difficult to eject those nations. After that is accomplished, I then plan to raise the endo cap which will help keep invaders from ejecting powerful nations while additionally preventing the delegate from going rogue. I will maintain myself within a range of 10-20 votes above the Viziers, who have already proven themselves dedicated to our region. While I give my word that I would not take such a move, I acknowledge that I need to prove my word is worth something and additionally ensure that my successors will not be able to abuse their own power. To address your second question, I was a very active defender in my time and a major player in The Empire. I understand that aspect of the game too well. Defense is not something that you need to worry about. ![]() To address your final question, absolutely! I realize you may not know me, but one thing about me is that I respect all members. I just ask that respect be returned. When I believe that respect is being abused, I will take action against a member of the community, such as taking a regional vote for a temporary ban as was the recent case with Kurdazistan who had on many occasions and in other regions was known for disrupting communities and harrassing other members. Additionally, should the Conclave decide that a member has violated the Concordat, I will act accordingly with the wishes of the region, should that become a temporary ejection, ban, etc... TEP is a feeder, and everyone in this region, an active member or not has as much right to be here as the rest of us. ![]() |

Excellent question if I may say so myself. ![]() First, it is a very important question, is he wearing a mask or a hat with a feather? If it is the former, I drag him out into the light and invite him to join me for a cup of coffee and some ice cream as we discuss inner-regional politics and the work of the branches of our government. Later in our discussion of which is the better national animal, a squirrel or a llama, I invite him to volunteer with me at a local campaign for delegacy. After he has decided to stick around, I ask him why he is interested in seeing such members. Now, depending on how he answers determines my next move. If he gives me a vague answer, I prompt for my information. If he gives me a specific answer, I direct him to the proper avenues of meeting these members. Now, if he is really a camel herder in disguise who is trying to convince our government that camels make a better mascot then the metered scapegoat, I will simply smile and hand him a pile of impossible paperwork to fill out in order to have a meeting with them. If it is the latter, a man wearing a hat with a feather, I simply take his hat and stroll him through the public and say, "RNH, seriously? Here, fill out these papers and you have your meeting" as I smile and hand him the stack of impossible paperwork. ![]() |

This question was very difficult question to answer, which is why I waited so long to answer it. To answer your question, I have always been very fond of embassies and foreign affairs and will continue to utilize any such system that exists. However, I will not use a conventional means of foreign affairs. I recognize that the need for exterior thought is necessary in the growth of our region and I plan on working with people that I believe to be best suited for increasing our extra-regional policies. There are many fantastic people that I know in this game who will be willing to help establish and maintain a form of inter-regional exchange. Right now, I just hope to open communication lines with other regions and perhaps begin to develop friendships with them. Again, for any aspect that involves activity to be effective, long term goals must be utilized in the approach. Therefore, you will most likely not see bustling activity in TEP embassies, but rather, hopefully you begin to see more of our regional members interacting with other regions as well as their members interacting with our own region. However, by no way, shape, or form do I want to imply that I plan to adopt other regions policies. I value TEP for its own unique community and do not wish to destroy that to create a community more like another feeder or region. ![]() |

Public Servant No. 1 of Fyrdowsi

Would you like a cup of coffee, made with java beans of my choice? Okay, okay, that's just a joke to relieve your tensions when facing the cruel, cold representatives here. And I myself don't even find it funny, so please excuse me for being such a failure. Anyway, my question is, since you'll be wielding quite fearsome powers if you get elected, would you entertain new ideas for the benefit of the region, including ideas that would contradict your personal favor and philosophy? |

Sure, you can make some wonderful coffee! Of course, the tachycardia and palpitations will probably kill me, but hey, it's a chance I am willing to take. ![]() To answer your question, if I was unable to accept ideas that opposed my own, I would have failed miserably a long time ago. My RL demands me to constantly put aside my personal beliefs to accept another person for who they are. Since I am congruent between game and RL, it is difficult for me to reject a person because they contradict me whether in game or in RL. Truth be told, but don't let the word get out, I like contradiction and opposition, it helps me open my mind. ![]() Now, the approach to opposition is another story. I try to respect all opinions, but I do find it difficult to take someone seriously when they come around shoving their opinions down someone's throat without properly addressing their concerns. I tend to have a series of methods in which I approach contradiction that usually involves an MSN chat or PM to further elaborate and such forth. In the same manner, I do value when people approach contradiction respectfully. If people want me to take their criticism or contradiction, they need only address me in a respectful manner to seriously discuss them. Approaching me by saying "DFD you fail" will not be as effective as "DFD I would like to discuss your leadership approach, do you have a moment?". Additionally, my campaign to run is already geared on approaching new ideas to run the region; so if I was unwilling to listen to new ideas and accept them, well, to be honest, I never would have considered running in the first place. Keep in mind, if I were to become delegate, I will not have power to wield around. One of my first steps as delegate will be the deconstruction of the power given to the delegate. Therefore, it is not only a necessary measure to prevent me, but also future successors, from going against the wishes of the region. Being a delegate is essentially being a slave to the person's democratic region, which is why I have never understood why people really want the position. As such, again, if I were to become delegate, I am no more above the region than the rest of its members. And thus.....I have no authority or power to suppress anyone's opinion.![]() |

Acting as Attorney General of The East Pacific, I officially arrest you because of attempted bribery and... uhm Wait. I was the AG some three years ago. I'm not sure I still have powers left. I'll check my pouch asap. In the meanwhile I'd like a coffee too! ![]() More serisouly... DFD, manymanymanymany times in the past an issue has been discussed. Does TEP needs a standing army, be it for either defence or "retailiation" against threats (if this makes some sense at all)? (That's the standing army waiting to be either approved or dismissed) |

In fact, my EXILED thread is one such idea being tested now. But in no way, shape, or form is that related to the delegacy position.
