Hello Computer, , ,
|
I don't think there is much to gain from being the first name on the ballot in the World Assembly but it is always useful to have a vote on the table that at least represents some of the region in case the delegates computer explodes or some other circumstances that prevent them from casting a vote later on. I would aim to vote according to the wishes of the early voters in our regional poll and then change my vote as that vote sways. Theres not really any point getting in an early vote as delegate if the rest of the region disagrees with that vote, following the feelings of the region is central to the delegates job and I think voting should reflect that at all times. (plus theres always the odd nutjob WA campaigner who takes any votes registered as gospel to the regions feelings and it just avoids unnecessary complications, people can get petty about this sort of thing, especially with the inclusion of the Security Council).
Interesting question, because I have mixed feelings on this, we seem to have a very stable system that works and seem's to balance itself out at the moment, but it doesn't really drive us onward at all. I think some of the Delegates powers could be scaled down and passed to the Magisterium or to other officials to try and increase the role the Magisterium play in running the region rather than just being the body we go to when we want to change something. I think this will allow us to have more oversight over major decisions as they're taken by a group who must discuss it publically. This is something that could be really worth exploring this term.
As it is Foreign Affairs has been fairly confusing with the Delegate and Provost taking on a lot of the responsibility and everyone else just accepting that they probably do a better job on their own. This clearly isn't sustainable and whilst I think the Delegate must be a Chief Ambassador of sorts they should be encouraging other members to join them in our embassies abroad as ambassadors and encourage them in their own way to build up relationships with regions. We need to train up an experienced group of representatives for the region, there doesn't need to be loads of them and it doesn't need to take up loads of time but we need to actively engage with those regions who have consistently been by our side and looked for closer friendship.
I don't have an appointments that immediately come to mind, this is something I'd prefer to consider in more detail if I'm made Delegate as I am always sceptical about naming those you wish to appoint to power in campaigns because it strikes me as a bit of an attempt to; a) buy those individuals votes with job offers, b) use their standing in the region for your own ends. For those who are confused, my WA nation is 'Althami'. Thanks for your questions Kandarin I look forward to taking on more. ------------ |

Since my re-appearance on the forum, I've seldom had the chance to see your name in the "active member" list at the bottom of the page. Despite I understand that in NS nobody can *grant* anything as RL always comes first, can we reasonably expect to have you online a bit more, should you win the rush? Barely three weeks ago you've run for a Magisterial seat. That has happened at a time when it was rather clear we'll have had Delegate elections in short time. As the two positions are obviously incompatible, could you please describe the reasons which have brought you to such a sudden change in such a short time? Thank you! |

Hello Computer, , ,

Thanks for your questions Reziel, Excuse me for answering them in reverse order but I expect my answers will merge into each other this way. I always intended to run for the delegacy regardless of my chances, I love a competition and I think it breeds good ideas accross the board that any successful candidate can adopt and learn from. I wasn't expecting there to be such a gap between the elections (I'm not criticising that decision just that it was frustrating for me) and as I am not going into this delegate campaign with the expectation that I would win (in all honesty I expected Dyr to succeed Todd as delegate) and people prompted me to run for the Magisterium again I felt I should do. But my main intention has always been to run for the delegacy this term regardless of the outcome. I have felt in a kind of limbo the last few weeks waiting for the delegate elections to start and so I must admit my visits have mostly resembled simply checking whether elections had been started or not. I'm not actively involved in roleplay and although I've tried to take an active role in foreign affairs through my Magisterium membership and in the regional newspaper these attempts have never got me to far for one reason or another those I've made the offer to haven't followed me up on that offer. So unfortunately theres a limited number of topics I can respond to daily because I haven't ever gotten involved in the roleplay of the region. I generally respond to all World Assembly discussions even if its simply stating that I'm not particularly interested in the matter at hand, I make an effort to welcome any new members and respond to any updates in the embassies that we recieve. On top of my magisterium role I'm not sure theres much more I can respond to other than what I already do. |

Hello Computer, , ,

I'm glad you asked, the Office of Tourism promised a lot when we started it and its been abandoned to some extent by all of us. I was going to go and recruit new nations to the forum this morning but there were no useful templates or system for doing so and quite simply I was a bit lost. I want to breathe life into this as one of my central plans for this campaign, taking an active responsibility for recruiting newly founded nations to the forum (we have a huge advantage to other regions on this front, we just need to be less complacent about it and go and reach out to new players). I have looked at other regions do this remarkably effectively over the last few months, Capitalist Paradise, 10000 Islands, Grand Central and Global Right Alliance have grown rapidly and through the efforts of very few. Theres so much ground that can be made on this area and its really not too difficult, we just need to make sure we set up the Office of Tourism for this job and I will make a personal commitment to put in the hours needed to get the most out of the region. |

sounds kosher. as a new member who has been involved in other forums across the net, i was surprised to see the "typical threads" absent here (ie, a pics thread, or a thread where members post themselves irl). when i tell people about nationstates, i tell them "you get out of it what you put into it" - not only getting new members, but keeping new members around long enough to discover this by creating a strong sense of community, i'm of course for it. |

My main concern with any delegate is the amount of power they wield over the nations in the region. Between the nastiness in TEP in December '08 and the recent debacle in TNP, I worry about the stability of any feeder delegate. What kind of assurances can you give those of us who are in NationStates merely to watch our nations grow that we will be left in peace in the region that we've chosen? How well do you understand the issues of raiding and defending against raiding? Will you protect the rights of those nations in TEP who choose not to join WA, roleplay, or any other system? |

Hello Computer, , ,

As far as I am aware there are no circumstances under which the actions of the delegate should have any negative effect on members of the region who go about their activities quietly in the region. They're a valued part and we've seen numerous nations that fit into this catagory come and offer this community their company and help over the last year before fading back into their own little world, and thats been great, we need to keep a welcoming community where members dont feel any compulsion to follow any mould and yet still feel part of the region, thats something I do believe in and I don't anticipate circumstances where I would move away from this. Perhaps if you gave me a hypothetical situation and I gave you my hypothetical response I may be able to more directly show my stance on this matter.
I'm fully aware of the issues in this regard, and I don't use fully lightly ![]()
At times throughout my life in the East Pacific I have maintained myself as a non-WA nation (and my main nation here still is) and I have not explored roleplay in the East Pacific, its not exactly my forte. I hope as a result I will hold sympathy with anyone taking such stances in and they have just as many and much rights as the next nation. Hope that answers your questions Nylter |

So you are walking down the street one day..... ![]() Actually, I do have a question! You are working late one night in the Magisterium when suddenly a black masked man runs out of the building carrying a very important looking black box and papers. As you go to chase after him, you notice, the man has set the whole building on fire and the flames have quickly caught with the dry wood and mountains of unncessary paperwork floating around just so laws are deliberately never passed. As you look around, you also notice that DN is passed out feet from his flaming desk which is ensnared in a room of burning flames now. The black masked man is gaining grounds and from the looks of it might escape if you do not act immediately. What do you do? ![]() |

These sleeping foxes may seem docile, but they can easily be alerted to take out rude Scandinavians! TV, I was wondering, what sort of plans do you have in the way of regional security? Do you believe the endocap should be raised or lowered in addition? |

Hello Computer, , ,

I head straight for DN and haul him out at whatever cost. Lets face it, the Magisterium hasn't got any important papers that could possibly be of any loss at the moment, the whole thing runs purely on DN's awesomeness, couldn't possibly lose Dyr, it would be catastrophic!
With regards to the endocap, I've seen no evidence that it needs to be moved either way. I've been building up endorsements on my World Assembly nation and gained plenty without needing to come close to the cap at all. I'd much rather keep a system that works when it comes to security than change it for the sake of change or 'just to try it' and find ourselves in an awful mess. As for security we seem to keep a fairly tight ship in the region, I don't have any pressing concerns with our security. However, in the past we've been fortunate to recieve the assistance of all manner of regional militaries in times of trouble. The decline of Taijitu and Gatesville mean that there are no exceedingly large military forces in the game (perhaps with the exception of 10000 Islands) which is both a blessing and a concern. One of the issues in the past with regions responding to prop up the East Pacifics delegate is the issue of legitimacy. I think it would be good to start a conversation on this and perhaps establish some guidelines for those who are keen to come to our aid should we need it (with Savaer in Unknown and Imperial Britain these two may be worth advising on our policy as well as any of Dyr's many regions he feels it necessary to include) so that they can make an informed decision. Let me provide some clarity to what I'm thinking (thats not to say this would be the policy we would pursue but it would be one I would put forward). We should establish two or three regional members whom these external groups should contact if they are unsure as to the current status of the delegacy and whether they need to support the delegate. These should be our most trusted and responsible members, those who have shown with no uncertainty that they won't abuse their power and will act in the regions interests. I am sure there are other options we can take but it is important to establish so that if the time does come that we need to call on these external friends we can streamline the process and ensure there is no confusion (particularly since the inclusion of a second major update each day, which shortens the window for bringing in World Assembly nations). |

So since the questions has dropped of to nothingness I decided to shoot one in. *grabs a wagon with question templates* Now, I just barely browsed through the others questions and your own replies to them so I may re-ask what others has already asked. Just ignore answering those questions if it happens. Yes, almost forgot. I tend to go the humor way if you find any questions odd. * Any gadgets you would throw around as delegate. Behaviours, outbursts, signs. Anything? A true delegate really needs a personality that shines in some way. Good, bad, evil, devine, angelic whatever. * As you clearly have been thinking on running for delegate for this term for a good long time, I wonder what your first action as delegate would be. What is your design for the region. * And as a follow up, what political views would you use on your Delegacy. Liberal, Communist, Conservative etc.. * Since roleplay isn't your idea of a fun time, neither is mine, what is your pull to Nationstates. What will make you fervently occupied and loving the game for the whole term. The game play? The obnoxious little issues that poors through every day or the politics? * As you sit down in front of your screen and lazily read this wall of text that probably will make you wonder which language I normally pollute, what type of drink do wield while doing such acts? I will return, if bored. Sunday is a long time away. I may get the chance to throw some more out.. Now I shall go and copy paste most of these on DFD's :ph43r: I am a lazy bastard. |

Hello Computer, , ,
|
Mostly oranges, carrots and various pieces of unique furniture from the 1970s. I'll generally throw them in the direction of ad-spummers and people writing tedious commend and condemn proposals in the World Assembly.
Immediately I would visit our friends abroad and introduce myself as I am not so well known as others in the region. Its good to build up a good rapport with the rest of the NS world so that if we have any issues with anyone we start on neutral terms, it makes things much easier and less stressful (and also avoids the various egomaniacs who think they owe us an invasion to inspire us).
As delegate I would be expected by most to adopt a fairly impartial position and for my actions to reflect the beliefs and concerns of the region as a whole. This isn't someting I've really considered in depth as a result because I don't believe it will be very central to my role.
I love the community first and foremost, in this setting you can interact with people accross the world, of all races, gender, and ages on completely the same level which is great. But I do love the political side of things, I love studying how the game has developed and how people have adopted real life models and applied them to this game and made it work (even if it shouldn't). The evolution of the game fascinates me and I hope that it continues to evolve because thats where the real interest is.
I'm sitting here with the remains of my Croissant and a half empty mug of Ribena! Thanks for your challenging and interesting questions!! |
