![]() Sanctions imposed on Rhodesia For Reliable News Network, Vadim Ivolgin VOLKGORODA - After the deadline on the removal of Rhodesian troops from Genosha passed, President Kreskov issued an executive order imposing sanctions on Rhodesia. The sanctions imposed this morning included travel bans, asset freezes, and a ban on various Rhodesian goods including foodstuff and arms. Laiatanese companies have also been barred from dealing with Rhodesian companies and operating in Rhodesia. Kreskov stated that the sanctions were to immediately go into effect, and all Rhodesian-flagged vessels were ordered out of port or out of Laiatanese waters by the Coast Guard and Navy. Laiatanese-flagged ships bound for Rhodesia were ordered home. Sanctions also targeted specific Rhodesian citizens, including high ranking members of the Rhodesian federal and local governments, as well as high ranking officers in the Rhodesian military. Rhodesian President Marion Heleck and Vice President Valintino Saar'bac have been blacklisted from entering the country. When asked about the duration of the sanctions, the president responded by saying they "will continue as long as this conflict goes on. It is disappointing that this senseless violence continues. Hopefully other nations will follow our lead and punish Rhodesia for its actions." |

![]() Polls show Yuliya Surkova maintaining wide lead heading into Kekur primaries For Reliable News Network, Oleg Trofimov Spoiler: click to toggle Surkova has maintained a wide lead over her opponents since her announcement to run for presidency back in October. POGOST - Yuliya Surkova has maintained her dominating lead over her fellow party members as registered United Laiatan voters prepare to head to the polls to select their party's candidate for the presidential election coming later this year. Surkova's numbers have been increasing steadily since her announcement for candidacy in October, the 45 year old Councilwoman from Trakovaski has seen widespread support across the country. Recent polls have put her at nearly 50% of voters supporting her candidacy, while Councilman Koshelev and Deputy Burmakin have been trailing since their own announcements. Surkova's platform is largely an extension of current President Kreskov's, which many attribute her success to. "When she ran for the nomination last election cycle, many thought she would be the nominee until Kreskov announced his candidacy. The two have largely the same views - though they differ on a few issues - but the people went for the older, more experienced, combat veteran. And now she's the most experienced candidate on the UL ballot, so it's no surprise to me that she's doing as well as she is," a staffer with the Surkova campaign said in an interview with ZRN. Surkova was a Deputy from Trakovaski when she first ran for president, a position she had held for six years at the time, and for the last six years she has represented her province in the Federal Council. Andrei Koshelev has been a Councilman four years and Vladimir Burmakin has been a Deputy for eight years. Only two primaries have been held thus far, and Surkova won both of them by a wide margin; Aktash and Kalshkavo. Kekur's primary is Monday, where Surkova currently leads Burmakin by 26 points - 59% to 33%. Koshelev is bringing up the rear with roughly 7%. Surkova already made history last election cycle by becoming the first woman to win a primary, and she is looking to make even more history. If she wins the nomination, she will be the first female nominee for the United Laiatan party (the first ever female nominee was Martya Zuykova of the Union Party in 1904). If she is elected, she will become the second youngest president elected, and will become the first female president in the history of the Laiatanese Federation. |

The island chain, named after Laiatanese explorer Nikita Lukashenko, is largely uninhabited and may contain a large amount of natural resources. According to the MGUA, scientists were sent to several islands part of the Lukashenko Archipelago for surveying, mapping, and resource discovery purposes yesterday afternoon. It is unclear why the MGUA dispatched scientists to survey the islands, though some analysts believe the Laiatanese government is preparing to lay claim to the chain and want more information on natural resources locations. The Navy has begun patrols near several of the scientific sites, and a source within the Ministry of the Interior reported several officials would be meeting with various local villages for an undisclosed reason. The source also reported it is likely the reason would be disclosed soon. |

![]() BREAKING: Wey-Yu Industries sinks unarmed ship carrying protesters For Reliable News Network, Oleg Trofimov GULF OF ITUR (ZRN) - According to an unnamed Ministry of National Defense official, a Wey-Yu Industries security vessel attacked and sunk a vessel registered to the Energy Liberation Front (ELF), killing a large number of protesters in the process. Among the dead are three Laiatanese citizens, whose names have yet to be released. The ELF ship was allegedly violating a zone in which Wey-Yu security forces will fire upon any civilian or military ship, regardless if they are armed. This is the first time this sort of incident has occurred. According to an ELF spokesperson, the group was protesting the expansion of oil drilling in the Gulf of Itur. Protests like these have occurred in the past, and the group has had run-ins with both the Laiatanese Navy and Coast Guard. However in those incidents, there were no deaths and protesters were peacefully arrested and detained. The Ministry of National Defense has issued a warning to civilian ships to stay away from the SS Oenotropae unless accompanied by a Laiatanese military ship, and to disengage and call for assistance in the case of being approached or pursued by a Wey-Yu or Veridian vessel. A spokesperson from the Ministry of Justice reported that an investigation has been opened against Wey-Yu Industries and the crew of the ship responsible for the sinking, and has demanded that Wey-Yu Industries turn over those responsible to federal law enforcement. |

The Federation Electoral Commission formally announced Surkova (United Laiatan) was the winner of the 2016 Laiatanese Federal Presidential Election, earning 61% of the popular vote - totaling 21,895,936 votes - at 11:30 PM LST. ![]() Stepanov County recalls Aktash Superior Court judge over comments towards sexual assault victim For Reliable News Network, Aleksi Voyurozovich RIVA (HHC) - Stepanov County voters recalled Bogdan Dyrbov, a judge for the Aktash Superior Court, for derogatory comments he made towards a victim during the sentencing phase of her attackers' trial. Natascha Tikhonovna, a 19-year old college student, was raped November 21, 2015 while she was unconscious by football players Luka Kuznetsov, Kuzma Romanov, and Yura Timofeyevich at a fraternity party at the University of Aktash, Riva. According to testimony, Tikhonovna was extremely drunk and eventually passed out in one of the bedrooms of the fraternity house. Kuznetsov, Romanov, and Timofeyevich reportedly entered the room shortly after. Party-goers saw the three men leave the room after about an hour. Tikhonovna was admitted to the hospital for alcohol poisoning at 3:00 AM, where signs of sexual assault were discovered by hospital staff. Prosecutors brought charges against the three men and following a two week-long trial, were convicted. The comments in question occurred during sentencing on March 8, 2016. Judge Dyrbov reportedly scolded Tikhonovna, who was in the courtroom gallery, for her behavior at the party. Dyrbov launched into a nearly five minute tirade directed towards Tikhonovna, who left the courtroom in tears. Kuznetsov, Romanov, and Timofeyevich received the mandatory-minimum sentence of 10 years imprisonment. Dyrbov expressed regret towards the men, stating: "I wish I didn't have to do this. If I could do it, you'd go free." News of Dyrbov's tirade and support for the convicted spread quickly across the province and several groups called for his resignation through online petitions, which received over 250,000 signatures. Dyrbov rejected resignation demands, releasing a statement standing by his original comments towards Tikhonovna. His fellow Aktash Superior Court judges also criticized the comments, many denouncing the practice of victim blaming in sexual assault cases. After the recall petition against Dyrbov received a sufficient number of signatures, Stepanov County officials organized a recall election which proved to be successful. Seventy eight percent of voters elected to remove Dyrbov from his position, effective immediately. Governor Aleksandra Globovona will appoint a replacement to finish out the final year of Dyrbov's four year term. |

![]() Feds raid building tied to domestic trafficking ring For Reliable News Network, Aleksi Voyurozovich VOLKERS (HHC) - Agents with the Federal Investigation Service (FSR) raided an abandoned warehouse in western Volkers late last night in connection with an investigation of a domestic trafficking ring. FSR tactical teams raided the warehouse in the late hours of the night following a break in the investigation of a domestic trafficking ring, rescuing twelve girls aged 15 to 20 and arresting eighteen adult men. Those arrested include several wealthy members of the Volkers community, the owner of the warehouse, as well as the individual believed to be leading the ring. Names have not been released. The girls were kept chained up inside cages made of chain link fencing, where it appears they were routinely abused - but kept well fed and relatively taken care of, given the circumstances. An unnamed FSR agent reported that another room was discovered in the warehouse, where further abuses occurred. It is believed the individual performing the abuse was likely the highest bidder. Charges have not yet been laid against those arrested, but the Federal Prosecutor's Office reported charges will range from trafficking to child pornography - dependent upon the suspect. |

![]() Two escapees dead, one hospitalized following month-long manhunt For Reliable News Network, Aleksi Voyurozovich FYODOROV (HHC) - The three inmates who escaped last month from the Grigory Dobrolyubov Correctional Center have been killed or captured, a spokesperson for the Federal Marshals Service announced today. The three men were found two provinces away in Aktash, at a truck stop near the port city of Sevrod just after 12 pm. Multiple phone calls to 999 reporting the three men led provincial police to the truck stop and sparked a nearly hour and a half long police chase to the coast. Said chase ended in disaster for the escapees, slamming into a semi-truck and killing Gleb Migunov and Sasha Yolkin, who were thrown from the vehicle. Stanislov Beriya has been hospitalized with life threatening injuries. Several guards and workers at Dobrolyubov Correctional Center have been arrested in connection to the escape, though details have not fully been disclosed at this time. What is known is that the three men were assisted by members of the kitchen staff, managing to get out through a food delivery vehicle. The facility and escape remains under investigation by federal and provincial authorities. 20 rubla bill will receive new look in 2018 For Reliable News Network, Oleg Trofimov VOLKGORODA (HHC) - The Ministry of Finance announced the 20 rubla bill will be redesigned, with printing scheduled to begin in early to mid 2018. Anastasia Ageykina, the first Laiatanese woman in space, will join the first Laiatanese man in space, Ludomir Vakhrushev, on the face of the 20 rubla bill. The cosmonauts will replace the current view of Vysoki Mountain. Rumors of a change first began circulating in early 2016 when several polls were conducted by the Ministry to gauge public opinion. An overwhelming majority stated they would support the redesign, according to the polls. The Ministry also conducted several polls regarding the redesign of the 10, 50, and 100 rubla bill - though no information has come about whether or not those bills will be redesigned. The Ministry has not yet released any preliminary images of what the new bill would look like, though they are asking for the public to send in their designs to join in the process. |

![]() People's Council to begin debate on recreational marijuana For Reliable News Network, Oleg Trofimov VOLKGORODA (HHC) - Deputy Katya Bukir has introduced N.S. 3183 to the People's Council, with nearly 50 cosponsors from within the SDS, the SNP, and KPL. The bill, introduced as the "Marijuana Legalization Act" aims to legalize recreational marijuana and expand research of the drug's potential for further medical use. Currently, all 15 provinces and the federal territory allow for the use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Ten of the fifteen provinces have legalized recreational marijuana since 2004, Trakovaski being the most recent to legalize marijuana for recreational use in 2016. The federal government still considers marijuana to be an illicit drug, though recognizes the benefits from medical use. However since 2006 the federal government has maintained a "hands off" approach to the legalization of the drug, allowing provinces to run state grow houses and storefronts without fear of federal intervention. With three more provinces planning referendums to decide the legality of the drug for recreational use and preliminary polls indicating a victory for legalization, it appears the People's Council will move forward with federal legalization as well. The bill's language is rather simple and much of it is still up for debate, though the bill more or less will remove marijuana from the illicit drug list created by the National Controlled Substances Act and will put more funding into research for medical marijuana. How the grow houses and storefronts will be managed is still unclear, with some deputies putting forward the idea of letting the provinces handle the logistics while the federal government regulates and ensures compliance. Other deputies, like Damir Emsky (RP - Kekur) believe the federal government should just legalize the drug and let the market and provinces take care of the rest. While there is significant support for such a bill, there is still pushback from more conservative deputies. Deputy Misha Sivy (NPL - Kazakavo) is against full legalization and believes the federal government needs to crack down on the provinces that have legalized marijuana. "The current administration, as well as the previous one, has ignored rule of law by allowing provinces to remain in violation of federal law for more than a decade," he stated during an interview on HHC's television station. Kazakavo is one of five provinces that has not legalized recreational marijuana. Debate is to begin on Monday, when the Federation Assembly returns from its fall recess. Even if N.S. 3183 passes the People's Council, it must also pass the Federal Council and go through reconciliation if there are any changes to the bill's language. |

![]() Marijuana Legalization Act to go to vote Monday For Reliable News Network, Aleksi Voyurozovich VOLKGORODA (HHC) - The People's Council will vote on the Marijuana Legalization Act Monday afternoon. After nearly a month of debate, the People's Council has created a final draft for the Marijuana Legalization Act that will fully legalize marijuana and establish rules and regulations for use, sales, purchasing, and research. According to Deputy Katya Bukir, who introduced the bill August 13, reported the following as the major points of the bill:
While the party whips are still working for votes, it is believed that the bill will pass no matter what due to the near supermajority that the Social Democrats currently hold. 60 percent of those present must vote in favor of major legislation in order for it to become law. The SDS currently has 258 seats, and assuming all Social Democrats vote in favor of the bill, will only require 12 votes from any of the other four parties in the Council. A majority of both the Free People's Party (54 seats) and the Communists (29 seats) are expected to vote in favor of the bill. If the bill passes, it will go through reconciliation and again be voted on in the Federal Council. Twenty of the 32 Councilmen must vote in favor of the bill before it is sent to President Surkova's desk to sign or veto. Surkova has come out in favor of the bill, and she is expected to sign it so long as it reaches her desk. |

![]() Pyotr Lukashenko, creator of the AL rifle, dies at 92 For Reliable News Network, Aleksi Voyurozovich GRODNY (HHC) - General-Lieutenant Pyotr Lukashenko, creator of the AL rifle family, died early Saturday morning, the National Defense Headquarters announced. He was 92. While in the Army, Lukashenko designed the AL-52 as part of a design competition to replace the nation's aging Oreuz M76/32 bolt action rifles. It was ultimately selected by the committee and introduced into front line service in 1952. He would serve 30 years in the Army, retiring in 1973 as a General and joining the family business of small arms manufacturing at the Lukashenko Defense Concern. The Ministry of National Defense would contact Lukashenko a short four years later to design a modernized version of the AL-52. The AL-77 took the position of main service rifle in 1977, replaced by the AL-77M in 1993, which remains the nation's current service rifle. Lukashenko continued his work at the company bearing his family name until 1995, retiring and spending much of his time with his wife at their home in Grodny. His wife, Galina Lukashenko, passed away earlier this year at 91. His 90th birthday was celebrated nationwide much like a state holiday, where he received the nation's highest award for his military service and work in the defense industry in a televised event in Volkgorda. President Surkova declared a national week of mourning, with national flags to remain at half-staff until next Saturday. Lukashenko will receive a state funeral with full military honors with the approval of his family, and will be buried in Grodny next to his wife. He is survived by his four children, seven grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. |
