A lone vulpine calmly dozed on a bus stop bench as the entirety of the Vekaiyun city Iruk around him erupted in a fiery conflagration of fire and hatred. Hordes of rioters stormed through the road in front of him, completely ignoring the ragged vulpine who was sleeping underneath a cardboard in the bus stop. A group of policemen swarmed the area after a while, in a futile attempt to control the rioting crowds. Several policemen stopped by the bus stop to investigate something, but paid no attention at all to the seemingly homeless vulpine. Things cleared up after several hours or so, but the sound of explosion could be heard in the distance, flaring up somewhere in the far reaches of the city. It was not a bother to the sleeping vulpine though.
It was just past midnight when suddenly the hobo vulpine woke up. Seeing that his surrounding was completely desolate, the vulpine put aside his cardboard blanket and stood up. He yawned for a while and stretched his arms before taking a sackcloth cloak underneath the bench. He covered himself with the cloak, and proceeded to cross the empty road.
He wandered aimlessly for a while, walking through the empty dark alleys and the abandoned buildings, until he reached an abandoned warehouse. A single burly vulpine was standing in front of a big metal door. He calmly walked towards the burly guy, who seemed to pay him no attention at all. Standing in front of the burly door-guard, the homeless vulpine waved his hand and greeted him in Unonian.

[Translated]"Peace in servitude, brother."

The burly guy looked at him for several seconds, and then continued ignoring him. The homeless vulpine nodded, and begin making patterns in the air with his hand. The door began to vibrate, and a few moments later, a glowing hexagonal pattern mysteriously appeared on the door. Upon seeing the pattern, the burly guard stepped back a good distance away from the door. The homeless vulpine waved his hand at the guard, and then calmly walked through the door.
He descended through a poorly illuminated staircase into what seemed to be an underground chamber of some sort. A simple wooden door marked the end of the staircase, with a lone vulpine youth lounging around restlessly in front of it. The youth gave a wide berth to the homeless vulpine as the latter opened the door.
The door opened to reveal a really wide area underground littered with shacks made out of wooden pallets and boxes. There are people everywhere; old guys sitting on makeshift benches, kids playing on abandoned vehicles and mothers cooking stuff over open bonfire in a barrel. Strange etchings written in some kind of foreign script
There was an entire community living inside the abandoned warehouse, and they all have one thing in common; they are the secretive vulpine followers of the Submissio Pacem.
The homeless vulpine walked in, and everything slowly ground to a complete halt as the eyes of everyone in the compound fixed onto the newcomer. The homeless vulpine put aside his sackcloth cloak, and started making strange pattern in the air with his hands as he muttered some kind of prayers. In front of everyone, bits and pieces of his body started to fall off and disintegrated in wisps of silvery flecks. Silvery dust slowly fell off his face particle per particle until his face completely disintegrated ... only to show a strangely human face underneath. At this point, several kids started to loudly bawl at the strange incident, but they were quickly hushed up by their parents, who continued to look on with indifference.
The now human newcomer dusted off bits of silver dust still clinging onto his face, and raised his hand. An older vulpine with a silvery grey mane and one blind eye stood up from among the crowd, and walked towards the human. When they finally faced each other, the human lowered his hand, and started speaking up in a foreign language.

"Iruk fe decori ignis. Ya'kul sub mitta? In pacem?"

The old vulpine shook his head. He replied back in Unonian.

[Translated]"Everyone is well in here, Brother Jeremiah c98. The community heads followed the contingency plan well, and brought everyone here to this sanctuary when the riot started. I do not think their properties up there survived the riot, though."

The human known as Brother Jeremiah nodded. A curious little vulpine cautiously peeked from behind the old vulpine, trying to take a closer look at what might have been his very first contact with humans. Jeremiah patted the little one's head, and the child went running back to his mother, bawling all along the way. Looking at the countless vulpine eyes around him, Jeremiah could see that although they were not physically hurt, they were not so untouched mentally. He spoke to the old vulpine, this time in Unonian.

[Translated]"I was quite alarmed as well when the fighting started, especially when it involved the religious clashes. It immediately brought back to me the memories of the pre-Exodus days. That's why the Council has ordered me to this city to see if the community was affected in any way."

The old vulpine laughed down Jeremiah's concern.

[Translated]"No worries, brother. These are fleeting problems for our kin who are still adhering to the old philosophies. It will soon pass. Besides, the Illusory Vision power words I inscribed to the entryways around this compound will ensure that safety of all who took refuge in this sanctuary until the danger passes."

Jeremiah nodded. The power word was still strong when he entered the building, and would likely remain so until it was safe to venture out again. Anyone who entered the building would be redirected to an empty version of the warehouse, devoid of any life. The enchantment would provide a good misdirection to those rioters who had a penchant for entering compounds forcefully.

He held up his hand, bidding to retire for a night inside one of the shacks. An urchin pointed him to a small cardboard shack that used to be the community's store-room. The shack was dingy and smelly, but he settled in without any problems.

The night passed without problems, but a lot can be said about tomorrow, he thought, as the comfort of his cardboard bed quickly lulled him to sleep.

Rygardi Republican Ship (RRS) Aeon Hammer moved through the waters, commanded by Commander Glenda Harding. Commander Harding smiled as she looked at the two Vekaiyun ships. "Easy prey," she said. With her submarine were the Great Saberand the Murderous Ghost, two attack submarines. Before them were the Vekaiyun ships, Pucacanx and Liaysess, two cruisers. "Fire torpedoes!"

Torpedoes launched from the submarines cut through the waters. Commander Harding grinned as she watched the torpedoes head towards their targets through her periscope.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Ikrisia Levinile!”

An expansive table sprawled out in front of her, much like the table from the day – round and cut from jaku wood. But the surroundings were different. In fact, very different. Now it seemed to be outdoors, under the veil of tall trees against a sky that looked overcast… either it just rained or it was going to rain – it was hard to tell, really. Food looked normal, wine glasses, sure, but the occupants of the table? Well, she couldn’t recognize most of them, but there were a few she knew. Trouble was, they were all dead, or supposed to be dead. All seemed to be leaders of Vekaiyu at one point too. Behsariv, or what looked to be Behsariv, was sitting next to a slew of other pagan leaders, then Renuli IV the traitor, next to Todd McEdek, then a series of kings, all the way up to Erasu IV, and finally, Max. Max?

“God fucking dammit,” Ikrisia muttered. “Either I’m dreaming or I’ve gone insane.”

“Ikrisia! Come, sit with us!” one of the kings boomed. “We’ve been waiting for you!”

“Yeah, what took you so long? Selvala too much for you there?”

Ikrisia pulled up a seat next to Venavle and sat down. She realized she was dressed in her current uniform, that of Premiere but without any identification markings. As soon as she scooted her chair up, she lifted her head and noticed everyone was watching her.

“Hey Ikrisia, don’t drink the wine, it’s poison!”

Behsariv put his hand over the glass as others laughed. “Nah, it’s okay.” He removed his hand and pushed the goblet closer to her.

“But that was some good thinking, right, child?” He chimed in. “Come on! Come on! Every even person gets poisoned, and the odd one is promoted! Genius! Now where did she learn that from!”

“Ah shut up Max, I was doing that before you even arrived on the scene!”

“You would’ve never survived in the 20th century!”

“Um… okay,” Ikrisia began after a burst of laughter from the occupants. “What’s this?”

“You’re taking your place as a leader of Vekaiyu,” McEdek informed. “All leaders of Vekaiyu are allowed to sit at this table. But, the path you forge for both you and our nation is entirely up to you.”

“Ah, she’ll just follow the pattern of the Vekaiyun leaders of old,” Erasu IV barked as he took a sip from his glass. “Let’s see… pick one of the three: handcuff your nation, blame the problems on something else or another group of people, or be inept and get replaced down the line.”

“Like you, eh?” He replied.

“At least I was only one of the three. And I think you’re the only one at the table with an Oedipus complex. Am I right, group?”

“Hey let’s not talk about hot moms. Didn’t I burn your mother after I hung her?”

Ikrisia pushed her chair to the side as the two former leaders had at it, gripping each other by the necks until he slammed Erasu IV to the table, causing the flatware around them to clamor. Amidst the grunts and shouts, some of the table’s occupants grabbed the quarrelers and wrestled them free from one another.

“So I’m dreaming this, right?” Ikrisia asked as she watched the two return to their seats after giving each other looks.

“You may take this in any way you want to,” McEdek replied. “One of the nice things about lucid dreaming is you can play out any scenario in your head without consequence.”

Ikrisia nodded and slowly began to think.

“You want to kill me, don’t you?”

She turned to Max. “You’re already dead.”

He smiled. “My child, history isn’t linear. It’s some kind of jagged function with many peaks and valleys. The more you impact history, the more you become raised onto a peak. And, when you’re on a peak, as I am, there’s so much else you can do. You can see farther, and fly to other peaks. I may be dead. But I am not gone. After all, I have a successor.” He gave her a slight nod. “You. You were molded into my image. In essence, you are me. I created you.” Smiling, he looked down at her figure, then back to her eyes. “I did create you. Had it not been for me, you would’ve lived with that uneducated fool Stapen Evesuni and died a peasant slave. You owe everything in your life to me. Your experiences, your body, your mind. All of it. Child. My child.”

He watched as Ikrisia grabbed a fork from the table. “Go ahead. I know what you want to do with it already. Do what Selvala did and stab my eyes out with it. Give me more mortal pain, I like it. I want to feel alive again, dammit!”

“Go back to hell where you belong.”

“Who is your real father, child? The one who created you only to abandon you, or the one who took you in, gave you caretakers, made you into a world leader?”

“I hate you for all you did to me!”

“You and I are more alike than you give me credit for, child. All Vekaiyun leaders start out by wanting what’s best for their nation. Then, they change. They revert back to the leader of old in some form or another. Oh sure, you proclaim humans to be equal to vulpines. That’s real cute. You want everyone to get along and sing songs by some campfire. Won’t happen. You want a united state. Vekaiyu has never been fully unified. You only know what I told them to teach you. You will become me.”

“I learned what not to do from your bullshit,” she sneered.

“Again, cute. But do you really think you’ll be able to break any kind of cycle? Look around the table, child. Everyone here is guilty of at least a little bit of it. Some necessary, some unnecessary, but all are guilty of it.”

“I am not like you.” Ikrisia paused. “I am not anyone here because I am not Vekaiyun. You broke the cycle, Max, by taking a Listonian into your program. And it will take an outsider to undo the problems that you have caused.”

“You think bloodline will save you?”

“My beliefs will save me, and nothing else. I won’t waste this chance.”

“Of course, young Ilesira Venavila Evesuni. And may those beliefs be your greatest hell.”

---

Ikrisia woke up in a cold sweat. Back to the real world, once again. As her eyes adjusted to the dark of night, the red quartz glow of her digital alarm clock flashed the time. 4:07. Still very early. Unfortunately it was the time of night where sleep came difficult, and it might be a while before she officially closes her eyes once again. She turned her head to face her ceiling, her mind slowly waking up and trying to make sense of a dream she probably wouldn’t remember later in the morning.

“I must kill Maxism off as quickly as possible. Tomorrow it may be time to call upon the alliance for help. This must be quick.”

Iruk burns well into the night

BREAKING NEWS - States Plan to Secede from Vekaiyu
Reporting from the V3 Network in Vekaiyu, Ankya Ilusi

LIRA – despite the Vekaiyun Premiere’s warning to provinces that defect from Vekaiyu, three provinces have declared their independence.

The provinces of Kunnat, Lira, and Adevi officially declared their tentative withdrawal from Vekaiyu at 7:00 this morning. The three provinces, which are temporarily addressing their new state as Meyshevyu, have already begun the process for secession.

“We are seceding, yes,” Provincial Overseer of Kunnat Enlil Volesieri released in a statement following the announcement of independence early today. “This is a split not out of hate, but out of protest. Maxism allowed our nation to thrive and expand. Maxism saved lives – our lives, the lives of the Kunnatians, while Levinile has only brought us death, division, and destruction. I am confident other states will follow our lead.”

This comes as a surprise, especially considering Kivia Ikrisia Levenile’s warning that “grave consequences” will be carried out to any dissenters. Levinile released a response to the issue, stating that “those who dissent from the state of Vekaiyu have no regard for the lives of their people. Vekaiyu is far too integrated for a fragmentation. Vekaiyuns will never support the fragmentation of their homeland. Any attempt at poisoning the state, no matter the severity, will be dealt with swiftly and severely. I will not let my people die because of the greed of Maxists.”

Levinile has also stated she will not recognize any claims of independence from Vekaiyu.

V3 has had difficulty in effectively reporting the situation as it unfolds, but the news service has learned that the metropolis of Nilisa, the largest city in Kunnat, is currently undergoing rioting of its own. It is unclear as to what could happen next, though all three states are heavily reliant upon other Vekaiyun states for much of their needs both in exporting and importing goods. More news will be available as the situation develops.

Iruk Death Toll into the Tens of Thousands
The continued fighting over Vekaiyu’s third-largest city has led to the tragic loss of an estimated forty thousand individuals, with some estimates as high as seventy thousand.

Despite Levinile sending troops over to the province after she declared martial law, fighting has little sign of diminishing. Instead, citizens have turned against the military, attacking soldiers and even obliterating a few Sulessi class tanks. It is believed there is also minor dissention within the military ranks, as Maxism seems to have penetrated all areas of Vekaiyun life. Reports have indicated this dissention diminished greatly with the promotion of Lur Commodore Vanse Lebivistre, who has accepted the claim of Levinile that Maxists are traitors. He has reportedly killed 150 of his own men for “Maxist motives.”

The 77th infantry division and the 24th armored corps division were called in to restore order to the beleaguered province. Witnesses from the city have cited most of the killings are coming not from the military, but from Maxists rebelling and employing a sort of “street justice”: attempting to prevent citizens from fleeing the city and holding them hostage while killing off those they cannot contain. It is believed this practice is being set into motion with the hopes that Levinile will call off the martial law order and grant the province nominal independence.

“That’s just sickening,” Commodore Vanse Lebivistre commented. “My men and women have had the game plan changed so many times over the past 24 hours. We were brought in to restore order, now we are liberators.”

A message appears in Ikrisia's email folder. It is listed as being extremely important.

Quote:

To Premiere Ikrisia Levinile of the Holy Republic of Vekaiyu,

I wish to express my support to you in not only yours but also your nation's time of need.  You surely have heard Rygardi Republican Presidential Viceroy Archibald Rivers' lucidious accusations made against you, President Zachary Kreskov of Southern Yugoslavia, and Vulshain's King Rainard of plotting a world domination scheme.  He has even gone so far as to lie to the world that you tried to assassinate Allegheny's President Allen Gordon!  My sources have informed me that Rygard was partly behind the bombings and riots in your cities, secretly sponsoring terrorist and insurgent groups in your country.

We have discovered evidence that suggests that Rygard is secretly supporting the Maxist insurgents and terrorists, and even has secretly placed black ops units to assist the Meyshevyu provinces that have seceded from your nation.

I also send you a warning: Rygard may try to assassinate you.

Do not tell anyone what I have just told you, as it may force your enemies to immediately silence you.

To ensure your protection as well as to assist you in restoring order and stability in your nation, I have authorized that Order 99 be carried out immediately.

Order 99 authorizes all DIEIS agents currently in a designated area to work in full cooperation with an endangered nation in order to restore order and stability to that country by any means necessary.  Therefore, all DIEIS agents will report not only to me, but also to you as well.  They will act as your eyes, ears, and swords against all threats, both internal and external, domestic and foreign.

I have attached the numbers of my best agents currently operating in your country to this email.  They are contained in a special password protected attachment file.

The password is a four lettered word that is usually associated with marriage and weddings, and is the feeling that the bride and groom have for each other.

Use these and all of the DIEIS agents however you see fit.

I hope my efforts can aid you in restoring Vekaiyu to order.  Godspeed.

Gilbert Jerold Ewing, Director of the Department of Internal and External Intelligence and Security (DIEIS)

Jeremiah woke up from his sleep upon hearing a commotion outside his shack. He looked at his water-dial watch to check the time; apparently he slept for two days, probably owing to the extreme fatigue he endured trying to sneak into Vekaiyu. He fastened his sack-cloth cloak, and walked out of the shack.
A group of elderly vulpine women was comforting a younger vulpine woman who was crying and babbling in incoherent Unonian. Upon hearing Jeremiah's arrival, the women stepped aside and coaxed the young woman into talking with the old monk. The young vulpine seemed startled to find a human face among the vulpine crowd around her, but Jeremiah assured her that he meant no harm. Placing his hand on her shoulder, the monk inquired her name.

"Ena, sir.", she replied. The monk found hesitation in her words, and uttered a simple prayer to calm her down. She calmed down pretty quickly, and thus Jeremiah discovered that she was also a neophyte follower of the Way.

She hastily told, through sobs and moans, of how the city went mad overnight, with brothers fighting brothers over ideology differences, as she stayed behind in confidence that she could survive the crisis outside the sanctuary. She also related on how her boyfriend, a follower of the vulpine way of Maxism, was held captive by unidentified people in his own house. She did not know of his fate, but his boyfriend's neighbor who fled earlier, told her of the countless massacre of Maxists across the neighborhood. She feared for the worse, so she finally left her house and joined the rest of the community to find solace.
Jeremiah sighed. Ideally, she could be reprimanded for defying the orders of the community heads and having a non-arranged affair with a non-follower. Realistically, however, it was not the time to fret on idealisms. The inquisitors would decide what to do later.
For now, Jeremiah would have to opt for either choosing political neutrality and delving into the mess to save lives.

Public Release -- Department of International Affairs of the Federated Alliance
TRAVEL WARNING -- VEKAIYU
The Department of International Affairs of the Federated Alliance has issued this Travel Warning regarding Vekaiyu given the security situation in Vekaiyu. The Department of International Affairs has determined Vekaiyu to be an extremely dangerous location and has recommended that Free Pacificans avoid any travel to Vekaiyu. The Department of International Affairs has formally ordered the withdrawal of all non-essential diplomatic personnel.

The security situation in Vekaiyu has dramatically worsened over the past few weeks. A new administration has taken power, legally but controversially, and pledged large-scale reform. Many Vekaiyun citizens have reacted violently to this promise, often rioting, while several military leaders have openly mutinied. Several provinces have formally declared independence, a move that has the potential to cause outright civil war, and the federal government has been forced to dispatch troops throughout the country to restore order. Fighting has been widespread and further fighting has been expected.

The Department of International Affairs recommends that Free Pacifican citizens avoid any travel to Vekaiyu. The Department of International Affairs further suggests that any Free Pacifican citizen currently visiting Vekaiyu contact the Embassy of the Federated Alliance in Eldure to arrange for emergency transportation out of the country. Finally, the Department of International Affairs requests that all Free Pacifican citizens residing in Vekaiyu contact the embassy to discuss safety measures.

This travel warning replaces the travel warning of September 1st, which warned against travel to the Iruk province, amongst other areas. It is imperative that Free Pacifican citizens pay heed to this warning given the unsafe situation in Vekaiyu.

Jeremiah meditated in his shack, reflecting on the circumstances he was thrown into. Initially, he was only ordered to check the well-being of the fledgling Submittan community in Iruk. Now, with the injustice all around him, it would be a sin for him to ignore the plight of the people, even those who did not believe in the Way.
The elder silver-maned vulpine peeked into his shack, asking for permission to come in. Jeremiah ceased his meditation, and nodded. The elderly vulpine came in, bringing two cups of the potent beverage qahva, a necessity for prolonged meditation. Jeremiah thanked him for the beverage and took a sip.
After several sips, the elderly vulpine inquired what was boggling the mind of the monk so much that he had to meditate in solitude. Jeremiah related his ordeal to the elderly vulpine.

"You see, brother, this country is ailing. Bloodshed was done for reasons not worth mentioning. It was a blatant violation against our faith, yet I could not do anything without affecting the relation between my country and yours. What should I do?"

The elderly vulpine nodded. He took a deep breath, as if summoning something from his well of wisdom, and whispered his reply.

"I concur. This country is indeed ill. And yes, you will have to commit to your country's neutrality. However, you can still conduct the duty of your faith without risking the neutrality of your country."

Jeremiah was not sure what the elderly vulpine implied by that. He asked for the vulpine to elaborate more on the statement. The elderly vulpine took a sip from his cup, and continued on.

"You know, what this country really need at this time, is hope. Hope will make the people stronger. Hope will heal this country, without ever needing any other foreign help. Irony it is that you, a foreigner, will be the important catalyst to conjure up hope."

Jeremiah was startled. The elderly vulpine was implying for him to openly meddle with the affairs of other nation, which would draw attention from the inquisitors of the Order of the Hourglass. The monk knew that only a high-ranking Order agent could officiate and authorize any incursion into foreign lands with the blessings of the Council. Going against that would violate the neutrality edict of Fyrdowsi, and risk putting their isolationist policy into disarray.
But then again, these poor people would have no other way to spare in such predicament, he thought. Jeremiah finished his drink and returned the cup to the elderly vulpine. He then politely refused the invitation to potential problem.

"I'm sorry, brother. Unless there is an approval from the council, I cannot do anything else other than healing the sick and the injured in this sanctuary. Besides, I am not good in this kind of diplomacy thing."

The elderly vulpine sighed, and slowly nodded his head in agreement. He collected the empty cups and excused himself. He was just about to walk out of the shack when he stopped for a while, seemingly in remembrance of something and stepped back in. Drawing out a dirty scroll from within his shirt, he handed it out to Jeremiah.

"I almost forgot to give you this, brother. Someone gave it to me earlier, and directed me to give it to you."

Jeremiah took the scroll and thanked the elderly vulpine. The latter nodded, and left the shack. After the elderly vulpine left, Jeremiah broke open the seal of the scroll, and read its content. The scroll was written in Arabasque, and content almost made the monk spew out his qahva in surprise.

Quote:

To Brother Jeremiah c98,

Congratulations. You've passed the test.

On the behalf of the council, the Order authorizes you to do what you can to save the souls of those affected by the crisis of Vekaiyu, believers and non-believers. Inscribed at the end of this scroll is a portion of the Litany of Transformation and a full verse of the Salvation Chant. You may find them useful. In the meanwhile, continue to oversee the situation in the sanctuary. The Order will request preparation for mass evacuation of the refugees should the sanctuary be breached.

Continue your good work, Brother. Peace in servitude.

Authorized by 'Silver Fox',
Issued by 'Sea Lion'

"Silver Fox eh? That old fox sure knows his stuff...", he chuckled.

The small fishing village of Ferronum in Calesu

DIEIS Agent Gayle Maynard watched through his binoculars from his hiding place in the bushes as the trucks and jeeps drove towards the village.

The people in the trucks and jeeps were all human. The villagers were all Vulpines. The humans were members of the Revolutionary Republican Armed Movement (RRAM). They also wore the severed tails of Vulpines like trophies and medals of honor. Gritting his teeth and now glaring through the binoculars, Agent Maynard knew what was going to happen...

He hated seeing it happen, no matter how many times he watched...

---------------------------------------------------------

Colonel Jaghatai Jeremiah Harrell wore a blood red beret, camo uniform, and black tinted sunglasses. He smiled as his RRAM soldiers drove into the village. The Vulpines began to run for their lives. Some jumped out of their vehicles, while a couple used mounted machine guns, the RRAM insurgents began shooting, killing anyone they wanted, regardless if they were kits or adults. Screams and gunshots filled the air. An insurgent lobbed a grenade into an occupied hut, killing those inside.

A young Vixen girl was tackled as an insurgent began ripping her clothes off.

An elderly Vulpine man was stabbed with bayonets as he cried out to St. Aiya.

A small church was the scene of vandalism and looting. The headless priest lay in a pool of blood on the church floor.

Many villagers, mainly women and kits, fled away from the village.

Standing on the hood of a jeep, Colonel Harrell smoked a large cigarette as his soldiers began to gather the few remaining survivors. Two RRAM soldiers dragged a terrified Vulpine man to a bloodstained log. There was a large ugly human man wielding a bloodily axe. The Vulpine escaped the insurgents' grasps, only to be shot by Colonel Harrell with a Luger pistol. "What is wrong with you morons! Bring another! Bring another!"

The two humans grabbed a frightened Vulpine teenage kit and slammed him onto the log. The Vulpine looked up, fear in his eyes, at Colonel Harrell. A very large human held the Vulpine's arms out, saying in broken Unonian, "What's wrong little kit? Wet your pants?" This brought laughter from the other insurgents.

Colonel Harrell yelled out in lisped Unonian, "You Vulpine kit! The government of Ikrisia Levinile wants you to vote! Says the future is in your..." stopping to find the right words, "...paws!" His soldiers laughed. "We are the future! You can't vote with no paws can you? Axe his paws!"

The axeman grinned as he swung the hatchet down. The Vulpine screamed. "Cut off his tail too! I need a new ponytail!" The RRAM insurgents laughed as a human wearing a bandolier and a tigerstripe pattern boonie hat used a machete to chop off his tail. The Vulpine crawled to his crying grandmother who embraced him.

"Bring me another mutt!" The routine went on. A few Vulpines, mostly men, were spared to be used as hostages.

The Vixens and a few males were not so lucky. The RRAM colonel smiled as some of his men and women began dragging the kicking and screaming Vulpines to have 'fun' with.

-------------------------------------------------

Agent Maynard tried to drown out the screams as he removed the binoculars. He didn't need them to know what was going on.

He opened his cellphone and dialed the office of the Premiere. Speaking in Unonian as he was connected, "I need to speak with Premiere Ikrisia Levinile immediately. It is extremely important that she hears what I have to tell her. My name is Gayle Maynard, a Vulshainian Agent of the Department of Internal and External Intelligence and Security, also called DIEIS. Put me through to her now. She needs to hear this right away."

He then heard the sound of machine guns being fired. Looking through the binoculars, he saw the insurgents loading stolen supplies and the few remaining survivors into trucks. "I must talk with her now. She must hear this now."

Aboard the Ikarov-Class VSS Liaysess

"Sir, torpedos spotted off the port side!"

Admiral Ehjy Sukarvi made a face as the observation spread across the missile cruiser like a chemical reaction. "Take evasive measures! Steer clear of the advancing torpedos!"

The ship began to slowly turn, but in a matter of moments one of the torpedoes slammed into the rear of the ship. This only managed to rock the ship, but it was clear the shot had done something detrimental, especially after the ship groaned and creaked over the hit. Despite the blast, the crew had for the most part reached their battlestations and prepared for a full-scale assault.

Airwaves were cluttered with much chatter as orders were volleyed out quickly. "Engine three is damaged and needs to be shut down! ... attack came from a submarine, SAS missile launcher takes priority! .... The frigate Pucacanx is reporting heavy damage and is sinking! ...Notifying nearby Vekaiyun vessels!"

Amidst the pandemonium, however, the men and women of the ship were trained for just such an occasion. Twin SS-N-14 antisubmarine warfare/surface-to-surface missile canons awaiting for the sonar to get a positive reading on the submarine. Locations had been confirmed, but with a limited armament, firing at this stage was chancy at best. Still, the ship fired a few torpedoes in the vicinity of a large object moving at a relatively shallow depth. Torpedoes were in more quantity than missiles, but a positive hit would allow the more effective weapons to hone in on the kill.

Lieutenant Commander Korisat Kizosren of the RRS Great Saber gasped in shock as he saw the VSS Liaysess returned fire. "Evasive manuveurs now!"

The Seawolf-class attack submarine attempted to evade the torpedoes, but failed as the torpedoes made direct hits. "We've been hit! Get us out of--" Lt. Commander Kizosren's order was cut off as the submarine erupted in a large explosion.

The Great Saber was no more.

----------------------------------------

Captain Haxtes Ineeb of the RRS Murderous Ghost cursed under his breath. He had known this plan was foolish to begin with. He cursed again when a torpedo struck the submarine. "We're taking on water! Torpedo room is reporting a massive hull breach," an ensign reported at the top of his lungs.

"We have to surface, Captain!"

Cursing a third time, Captain Ineeb ordered, "Lock the torpedo room down! I don't care if there are people in there! Get us to the surface, NOW!" The pleas and begs of the sailors still alive in the torpedo room were cut off as the ensign switched that commlink off. The RRS Murderous Ghost surfaced.

Ikrisia rubbed her head in annoyance at the recent news reports. Three provinces breaking off from Vekaiyu to form a nation of their own? It seemed suicidal, but it was definitely a decent gamble - now more than ever would she find out which provinces were in the most trouble. Fears of Iruk and Ves joining them would turn the unrest into an all out civil war, fairly balanced and without a doubt lengthy. If their territories suddenly became continuous, it would split the nation in half, giving them an outside chance of really doing a lot of damage.

"An example must be made," she said to herself after she received the most up-to-date map where her divisions were located with respect to the apparent independent state, both inside and outside. It was difficult to tell which divisions were hers and which had defected, especially in the state, but it would all be clear as the day progressed, but it was painful to simply wait.

Maybe she didn't have to just wait too long, though.

Ikrisia flipped open her cell phone and dialed a saved number. After a few rings, the receiver picked up. "Hello, President Gordon?" she began in English. "I have something I'd like to talk to you about."

TWO DAYS LATER, FORT CAMPBELL, TWENTY MILES NORTH OF CLAIRTON, UNION REPUBLIC OF ALLEGHENY

The troops had been prepared when the order was signed weeks ago, they all knew Vekaiyu would fall into chaos when they got the news. A stabilized Vekaiyu was important to Allegheny, economically and defensively, at least thats what they were told, General Burton didn't care either way. He watched as multitudes of cargo planes from three different airlift devisions began lining up to taxi to the runway, filled with supplies, vehicles, weapons and paratroopers to secure them. He could hear over the radio the controllers giving clearances. To his right he could see fifty brand spanking new Schofield tanks, their massive guns pointed toward the hills, along with many cargo trucks and personnel carriers preparing for the drive to Iruk. It was the first time since the 90's that the army was once again mobilizing for battle, except this time they were going to help their neighbors not kill their brothers.

Burton stepped into his helicopter and they lifted of, from altitude he could see a massive column of vehicles moving onto the closed down highway. On the other side he could see the formations of cargo planes moving toward the horizon, it was glorious.

------------------------------------------------

Army Paratrooper Medic Corporal Rebecca Grey's ass already hurt from sitting on the metal seats of the C-20 Liftmaster, the drone of massive jet engines went past her hearing protection and drilled into her skull. Twenty three and just out of the Rochester academy, her implants were brand new and she was excited to be going out onto the field. She leaned out and looked to her sarge and the rest of the fireteam she belonged to. They all gave her a thumbs up as they to were just as excited. The whole of Whiskey Company had been stuffed into the plane all staring at the red light waiting for it to turn green and for the loadmaster to open the bay door to let the jump. Time felt like it had stopped as they waited for the go signal, Rebecca double checked her equipment several times and tightened the strap of her sub machinegun so it wouldn't fall out when she jumped.

Suddenly a rush of air entered the cargo bay of the plane and everyone was given the hand signal to stand up. The line moved as people began to jump out of the plane their chutes deploying seconds later. Rebecca looked over to Sargent Chambers and they fist bumped before it was their turn. The jump was exhilarating for the few seconds she was in freefall before the chute deployed, afterwards her descent was slow and lazy like as she looked out upon the terrain. She could see the large Alleghenian mountains from this height, she scanned the area, more mountains and one burning city. Things looked to have gotten worse since the order was made to deploy. She landed and joined up with her team and company, a very orderly jump had been made outside the city.

The sarge had already landed and gotten out of his jump gear. Soldiers, vehicles and boxes landed all around them. Rebecca took off her helmet and wrapped a red headband around her head. She always carried it with her were ever she went, after a few minutes all of her gear was upon her person and she was ready to go. The sarge approached with the other men of her fireteam. "Hey everyone lets gather around we got orders to talk about!" The sarge ordered. The team gathered around him as he pulled out a map. "Okay guys, welcome to Vekaiyu. Our orders are to secure the jump zone and make sure all of our equipment and supplies are together. A Liason from the Vekaiyun army still loyal to the country should be coming to meet the Battalion Colonels soon, the main force of the 5th Field Army along with General Burton won't be here for several hours yet, Whiskey Company isn't gonna be part of the securing operation." The sarge moved his finger over to a small lake area. "Now we are going to be moving in to secure this small town here called.. well fuck I can't even pronounce this shit."

Rebecca moved in to read it. "Ferronum."

The Sarge laughed. "Yea what Grey said. Anyways we are gonna move in there with the company by jeep with and a couple APC's and secure the town, make sure no terrorists try and come out of it and hit the drop zone and thats all folks lets move!" The team saluted and moved over to were Captain Freemont was rallying his company. "MOVE OUT WHISKEY COMPANY!"

Twenty minutes later the small convoy carrying the 250 soldiers rolled up toward Ferronum, the smell of death and burning wood was present. "Looks like someone was just here." Sargent Chambers stated. Blood pooled up in the streets as bodies lie strewn about. The convoy formed a circle in the town center and the troops disembarked moving about securing buildings. The area was deathly quiet.

A Vulpine vixen screamed as she headed towards the Alleghenians screaming, "HELP ME!" She and a few other villagers were running from humans wearing Vulpine tails and furs. One of the insurgents fired a missile at a jeep.

A RRAM insurgent jumped out of a tree with a machete as he attacked Sargent Chambers.

Two other insurgents who had been hiding under trash and debris, grinned as they fired their flamethrowers.

A young human boy threw an IED at another jeep.

The Vixen girl screamed as bullets ripped through her right leg, causing her to trip and fall to the ground. Others were filled with bullets as the insurgents just cut them down to get through to the Alleghenians.

Two more insurgents ran out of the ruined and vandalized church spraying the Alleghenians with bullets.

A RRAM insurgent fired a missile at an APC.

The scream cut the silence like a knife through butter. Two rockets flew out of nowhere as one slammed into the jeep destroying it an the gunner and another hit the APC damaging the tread. The soldiers near the town center began to fire and the jeeps brought their miniguns to bear spooling up and spitting a wall of bullets into the general direction of the insurgents.

The IED that had been thrown detonated right next to the armored jeep damaging it and killing its gunner as he was showered with shrapnel. Nearby soldiers fired several bursts at the boy. The flame showered three soldiers as they passed, their inhuman screams startling their friends nearby who quickly sprayed the debry with automatic weapons fire.

Sargent Chambers dodged the machete, and fired several rounds point blank into his abdomen. The rest of the company scrambled to find cover as the remaining jeeps and apc's covered their maneuver. Bullets slammed into the jeep nearby the church as the gunner spooled up the minigun and hosed the insurgents coming out of it down.

A few of the vulpine citizens, who spoke not a whisker of English, came out from their hiding place pointed to a building next to the church, specifically, a door hidden by an overgrowth of vegetation. Apparently they were attempting to show the path to a small outcropping in clear view of the church.

The flamethrowing insurgents screamed as the bullets struck their tanks, killing them in a burst of fiery explosions.

The little boy cried as he fell to the ground, as he fell to the ground. He was crying, blood pouring from the wounds in his legs and arms.

The two men running out of the church tried to find cover, but were too slow as they were mowed down by a hailstorm of bullets.

The machete-wielding madman glared at Sargent Chambers as he tried to take the man's head off, but his eyes rolled back into his head as he collapsed to the ground from the point-blank shots.

A few of the insurgents chasing the villagers also fell from the soldiers returning fire.

A sniper, hiding in the tall and thick bushes targeted the soldier next to Army Paratrooper Medic Corporal Rebecca Grey and fired. The soldier fell down limp. The sniper then fired again, hitting one of the jeep gunners. He then quietly crawled to another hiding place, not making a sound. He left a special 'gift' just for the Alleghenians.

From behind a building, an insurgent jumped out and fired a missile straight at a jeep before jumping back behind the building. Another insurgent lobbed a grenade still attached to the grenade-covered belt at some more jeeps and a few soldiers taking cover behind them. He ducked behind a burning car, firing his M240 machine gun at the soldiers.

Two more insurgents fired from the windows of the building that once was a two-story schoolhouse.

One of the original insurgents fired a rocket straight at the front of an APC, before returning to his hiding place behind some trees.

The bullet smashed into body armor of Billy Coen who has been standing next to Grey. The pain felt like he had been punched in the stomach by a giant. Rebecca leaned over him ready to administer help if need be, but he waved her off. The gunner was not as lucky as the bullet passed through his helmet. A nearby soldier entered the jeep and took up his spot and began firing the minigun into where he though he saw a flash.

Two more missiles were fired one bouncing off the armor of the APC as it failed to explode flying in an erratic path into the sky. The other missile missed the jeep narrowly flying instead into the cover a soldier was using killing him instantly. A grenade belt hit another jeeps wheel, one of the soldiers nearby picked it up and threw it away as it exploded in mid air.

The APC was directed by radio to fire upon the school house destroying the walls and windows the insurgents had been firing from with 20 mm shells.

The other APC sprayed the burning car with 20mm rounds obliterating. While a group moves in on where the other rocket insurgent was hiding throwing a grenade around the corner into his hiding spot. The jeeps began moving toward the trees where the other rocket had been fired, spraying them down with their miniguns. The trees splintered under the constant barrage. The company began to spread out to stop grouping up and minimize casualties.

The insurgents taking cover in the schoolhouse returned fire, but gunshots hit them, one of them falling out of the building onto a board, like it was a spike.

The hiding insurgent screamed as he was killed by the grenade.

A Vulpine villager running from an cannibalistic insurgent stepped on the IED, setting it off. He survived, but lost his legs and half of his right arm. Flames covered the area. The insurgent was trying to eat him. The villager was screaming in broken English, "OH SAINT AIYA SOMEONE HELP ME! PLEASE!"

The machine gunner fired no more as he was reduced to Swiss Cheese.

The rocket launcher-carrying insurgent lay against a tree, bullet holes covering him and the trees.

The sniper fired another shot from his hiding place at an Alleghenian soldier, the bullet hitting him in the eye. The sniper placed Sargent Chambers in his sights, unfortunately, his gun jammed. As he tried to get the gun unjammed, the sunlight flashed off of the metal of his gun.

The fighting died down, but everyone stayed in cover while other moved into the buildings to gain vantage points. Another shot rang out as a bullet passed through a soldiers head splattering his brains upon the people behind him. A massive explosion occurred nearby heavily injuring a vulpine villager being chased by a cannibalistic insurgent. Two soldiers nearby fired several bursts into him causing him to drop dead blood leaking from his wounds.

A flash of light could be seen and everyone who could fired upon the area slaughtering the sniper whose body parts were flung everywhere in a 360 degree radius. Everyone cheered as he died, but quickly went back to taking up a fortified position. For an ambush losses were within acceptable limits and the jeeps could always be replaced, but to Whiskey Company, Ferronum had been mostly secured, however they remained weary of any one else wanting to enter the town.

"The medics spread out attempting to stabilize the wounded. Corporal Grey ran over to the Vulpine girl who had been shot at the begging of the ambush and began treating th wounds upon her legs. "Don't worry! We are here to help you. Do you speak English?"

Captain Freemont continued issuing orders to fortify and search the small towns premises from one of the APC's

The sniper screamed as he was torn to shreds by the torrent of bullets. The cannibal fell ontop of the wounded Vulpine who pushed the dead monster off of him. A Vulpine vixen tried to cover herself with rags as she rushed towards her husband.

One remaining insurgent rushed out from the bushes and grabbed a young Vixen and held a Luger pistol against her ears. "LISTEN HERE YOU BASTARDS OF BITCHES! YOU SHOOT ME, I KILL HER! I'LL KILL HER!"

Suddenly, the insurgent went limp as he fell to the ground. He had a gunshot wound in the back of his head.

A man exited from behind some bushes. He was dressed in khaki shorts, khaki shirt, khaki shoes and long white socks. He was also wearing a khaki-colored Pith Helmet. He was carrying a silenced sniper rifle. He slid the rifle across the ground towards the Alleghenians. He then placed his hands behind his head and said, "I am Gayle Maynard, an Agent of the Department of Internal and External Intelligence and Security of the Confederacy of Vulshain."

Two soldiers ran over to Gayle their weapons pointed at him shouting instructions for him not to move. Once they reached him one grabbed his shoulder forcefully and kicked his knee out from behind causing the agent to fall to his knees, the other searched him for more weapons, removing a knife and a pistol. After the search was over the soldier who had forced him easily picked him back up with his superior strength and force him to walk over to one of the APC's. The back opened up and out walked Captain Freemont, army black beret upon his head and the same piercing mechanical eyes the others had. He causally walked out into the open smoking his cigar and blew the smoke into Gayle's face. "What have we here?"

"Vulshainian Spy Captain, he seems like he is here to help." The PFC answered.

"I didn't ask if he was here to help Private!" The Captain spit out angrily. Freemont drew his .44 caliber revolver and pointed it at the spy's head, but he did not fire. He simply used it to remove the spy's helmet so he could see his face better, the Captain re-holstered his pistol. "So, what is a glorified Vulshainian spy doing here in Vekaiyu? And don't tell me you are here to help, because it certainly doesn't look like your visit here has made an impact." The Captain sarcastically said as he pointed to a few dead Vulpine villagers.

A few shells could be heard firing off the edge of the horizon, followed by the appearance of smoke and explosions. A low drone was soon apparent, followed by a cacophony of noises from all around. Suddenly, from the south, a series of rockets were shot off - katyusha rockets, dotting the sky and producing their eerie wails as more explosions removed any sort of tranquility near the surrounding vicinity.

It was clear that whatever was happening was coming their way.

"I was ordered to observe, but I got tired of observing. I've seen this same thing in other countries. I have much information on these insurgents. They are not Maxists. They are members of a cell of the Revolutionary Republican Armed Movement, also called the RRAM. They have taken many of the other survivors of this...attack to a small area south of here. I'm not sure what they will do with the survivors, but I can be certain that it is not good. Besides, under Order 99, I here to aid Premiere Ikrisia Levinile in restoring order to her nation. Order 99 therefore makes me not only a government agent of Vulshain, but also a government agent of Vekaiyu. We must hurry. The moment the RRAM insurgents those find out you are here, they will kill the survivors and quickly retreat into the countryside."

Suddenly, the sound of a battle could be heard. "It would seem that someone has arrived to aid us in stoppng them. Oh one more thing." He shot out his hand and grabbed a poison dart that was aimed for Captain Freemont's head, just inches from the captain's face. Gayle then threw the dart back to where it came from, right between an insurgent's eyes. He fell over dead. Returning his heads behind his head, he said, "I hope that proves my honesty."

Public Servant No. 1 of Fyrdowsi
Two groups of people were fighting in a clearing near a residential area. In the mass confusion, the lines between the two opposing forces was stretched thin. No one knows who's on which side. The only thing they prefer was where to point their gun. The newspapers described the situation as a mere rebellion, but it was all a guise for a more terrible term; civil war.
The military-looking side was gaining ground against the irregular-looking side, as their firearms took down more and more of the rabble army. Some of the rabbles took flight, leaving their still fighting brethren and the dead ones behind. It was a hopeless situation.

Suddenly, something shot down through the sky, right to the space between the fighting groups. It exploded upon impact with the ground, dispersing thick white smoke throughout the area. Both armies stepped back for a while, unsure of what had hit them.
A freak wind suddenly blew away the smoke, exposing a lone vulpine figure clothed totally in black shiny material. It was standing right in the center of the explosion spot, its silhouette barely discernible in the poor lighting. Its eyes shined menacingly in the darkness of the night.
All was still for 2 seconds before an attack order from the military side was issued, targeting the lone figure. This was followed shortly after by the rabble militants in the confusion of the moment. A rain of bullets was about to descend on the lone unprotected figure wedged right between the two armies.
To the surprise of the armies, the figure did not flinch at all. It simply raised one hand in the air as the armies started shooting. The armies took cover and braced for the resulting rain of bullets from each side.

Nothing happened. No ricochets, no stray bullets hitting anyone, nothing. It was eerily silent.

The armies peeked out from behind the cover. They saw the lone figure standing right where it was before, unharmed. There were no bullet holes in sight, as if the armies had been spewing air from their guns.
Amidst the confusion and hesitation, the figure started dancing and gesticulating randomly. As the figure twisted its body, all the guns held by the armies, even their backup weapons, started to vibrate violently. When the figure stopped dancing, the guns violently broke apart, spewing springs and screws all over the place.
By now the morale of both armies was dropping rapidly. Some of the soldiers, visibly shaken by the strange occurrence, broke their resolve and defied orders by deserting their position. The rabble armies took flight almost immediately, except for a few curious militias who maintained their position behind some covers.

Suddenly, an explosion rocked an area a few meters to the right of the figure. The figure seemed to be caught by surprise but managed to dodge the explosion by rolling away from the spot. A loud machinery noise filled the area, accompanied by a thunderous tremor as a huge vehicle painted with the military's markings suddenly jumped into the scene. The soldiers ran for cover as the vehicle smashed through obstacles in its way towards the figure. A trail of smoke from a big turret on the top of the vehicle indicated that the previous attacks was made by the monstrous machine.
The vehicle sprayed out bolts of hot projectiles as it made its way towards the black figure. Several bolts seemed to hit the figure, but the figure did not pay any attention to that as it rolled around, trying to avoid being in the way of the rampaging machine.
As the lumbering machine rumbled by, the figure suddenly moved into the vehicle's flank and out of the machine's viewfinder sight. The turret swerved all around, as if trying to find the black vulpine. Out of nowhere, the black figure suddenly landed right onto the top of the vehicle. As the machine flailed around, trying to shake the black vulpine off, the figure whispered a strange series of gibberish mutterings in a foreign-sounding language, quite audible to the personnels inside the vehicle despite the machinery noises.

[Translated]"Woe be to thee who abused the gift of the Creator to inflict needless pain upon others, for they would be cursed by their own hands ... "

Small lightning arcs started to fly out of the vehicle as the giant machination trampled the entire scene in the attempt to throw the vulpine off its top. As soon as the black vulpine finished its muttering however, the noisy rumbling in the machine started to cease. In a few seconds, the vehicle came to a complete halt, despite its drivers' frantic attempt to put it back into motion.
One of the personnels inside the vehicle grabbed a gun and opened the hatch in haste. The soldier came out of the hatch with the gun propped up, but the figure had already vanished.

***

The black figure sneaked through the ruins of the building, and eventually stopped behind a big wall. The vulpine's face seemed to distort and grimace before finally shrinking away to reveal the human face of Brother Jeremiah c98.
The monk tapped his chest a few times. The black shiny material that covered him and transformed him into a vulpine quickly shrunk and retreated into his sack-cloth garb, forming an amorphous bio-suit shirt. He winced for a bit; the bio-suit wasn't fast enough to deflect each incoming bolt attacks from the vehicle, and one of the hot bolts bypassed the micro-tentacles defenses of the suit, grazing his left thigh.

"So much for 'rigorously tested under the gigantic pressure of deep ocean'.", he muttered in reference to the suit's instruction manual, as he inspected his wounds. He uttered a simple prayer of healing, and the wounds closed up painlessly. He looked at his environment around him, and sighed.

Two days ago, a pigeon sent a mission briefing from the Order of the Hourglass, specifying him to stop the needless death of many men who were involved in the war that was breaking up the nation of Vekaiyu, using non-fatal means. The monk was surprised by the order, seeing that there were plenty of better-suited agents of the order around, and the fact that such action would raise brows about Fyrdowsi's neutrality, but he acknowledged the request anyhow.
The pigeon was holding a small bottle with a black, amorphous liquid in it, along with a scroll specifying the use of 'the Innovator chapter's Asvard Mark 2 combat suit'. After reading the manual scroll thoroughly, he opened the bottle. At once, the liquid inside gushed out towards his body in huge volume thought impossible to be contained within such small bottle. Upon contact with his body, the liquid mysteriously solidified and properly shaped itself into some kind of undershirt. The suit was uncomfortable and itchy, but he was required to use it for safety reasons.
A teleportation scroll with an unstated destination that was given alongside the missive, transported him from the Iruk sanctuary, right into the center of a mass murder in the middle of nowhere, where masses of people, vulpine and human, committing various atrocities against life itself.

The skirmishing men were bloodthirsty, but he was ordered only to disarm them and prevent them from inflicting more damage upon themselves. As he tended to his cuts and wounds, he could hear more gunfires coming from a distance. He would find them later, after a short nap.

7:00 AM, Kuslavi (outlying suburb of Iruk), I'i'isaski Apartments (primary communications base for 77th infantry division)

Sipavu Commodore Yamano Nevikalu tapped off the ashy end of his cigar as he cleaned his VS-122 assault rifle. The pride of the Vekaiyun firearm arsenal, the weapon was easy to manufacture, easy to use, and held a legendary reputation for its ruggedness and reliability. The rifle was everywhere. Without a doubt both sides were using it exhaustively. A few more slides and strikes of the furniture and the gun was ready for use once again. The human commodore set the weapon on his desk, which 24 hours ago served as a kitchen table for a family of four.

"Stand attention!" he called out. All in the room stopped to adhere to the command of their superior. "I know most of you are a little beside yourselves for killin your countryfolk, but when we reach the center of the city y'all can go back to not fighting, spittin out babies, whatever else it is you do. But your under my command now. Under my command, your gonna be killing Maxists. We will be cruel to the Maxists and through our cruelty they'll know this ain't the place to be messing with our country. We will be relentless. We will not let up. And we will give them all we goddamn got. The Maxists must be destroyed, and you all best be ready to do that. Sound good?"

"Yes sir!"

He stood from his chair and looked down at the map of Iruk, the small suburb of Kuslavi dwarfed by the large metropolis. He moved a pushpin toward the city. "I split y'all into five teams for a reason. Red team will advance zero point six miles due southward into the heart of Virouvi..."

"Commodore sir! We have incoming transmission from Lur Commodore Vanse Lebivistre of the 24th armored corps!"

He motioned for the phone, which the communications officer handed to him. "Good morning Vanse, how's that armored corps of yours doing today?"

"We are anticipating the arrival of the Alleghenian forces today, sipavu commodore. Please be advised that we will be sending a collection of their forces your way to increase effectiveness. My division will be heading due east straight to the heart of the city, as we spoke about earlier today."

"Thank you kindly, Vanse." He hung up the phone and set it down. "Okay, change of plans." He took all the pushpins off map and moved them to new locations. "You all know what colors you are. We'll form a perimeter around the suburb and advance forward." He then looked around his desk and finally grabbed a coffee cup. "Alleghenites are going to be moving from the east. You all be advised that coffee cup is going to be moving in too." He looked at the officers in the room, all vulpine. "You all got that?"

"Yes sir!"

"Go! Get out of my hair!"

Dust could be seen being kicked up on the horizon as almost 500 Troop carriers, Armored Jeeps and AFV's followed by 60 helicopters overhead all belonging to the 5th Cavalry Division colloquially known by it's members as 'The Lance.' The tumping of the massive helicopters blades drowned out all sound as the massive division filled with eager fresh troops barreled toward the rendezvous point. The choppers passed overhead, the soldiers inside waving down at the Vekaiyun troops as they headed for a nearby clearing to land.

The vehicles began lining up as soldiers got out of them stretching their legs. Colonel Campbell got out of his jeep with a megaphone. "All right everyone, stay frosty this ain't your mum's backyard!" The Colonel approached a Vekaiyun soldier hoping he could get him to take him to his commanding officers. "Hey you there! Take me to your commander!" The soldier shrugged at him and the obvious language barrier. "God damnit these fuckers don't speak a lick of English." The Soldier however must have noticed at his rank as he began pointing at the apartment building. "Is that where he is?" He said raising his voice hoping he would understand.

Campbell waved his hands in defeat as he began running over to the building finally figuring out where Commodore Nevikalu was. He walked into the room where everyone was standing around a table and scanned the people with his mechanical eyes. "All right, I am looking for the commanding officer here! Please tell me this is the place." Major Killian of the Air Cavalry appeared behind him. "This the place Campbell?"

"Speaking," Yamano Nevikalu said as he stood from his seat respectfully. He could speak English, but it was even more unpolished than his Unoninian. It was clear from the body language of some of his officers that they could understand English as well. "I take it you'd be the Alleghenyite help we've been waiting for. Well, I'm glad you could make the party."

Campbell dismissed the wrongly said term for his countrymen and shook hands with the Commodore. "It's good to be here friend. Whats the situation, come lets talk strategy."

"I like your motivation. Iruk's a bleeding mess. Really makes a man mad at what's going on." He moved in front of the map. "My goal is to bring justice, cause it looks like God's a little slow on that round these parts. I want the Maxists destroyed. The way I see it, we could go building to building and smoke 'em out. But I say move faster." He looked around the desk again. "Here. Until I get myself more pins, your men will be designated as these bits of paper. What I'm suggesting is facing the enemy head on - we go down the main routes and force them to come out. This will be dangerous. We will lose lives. But I think we'd lose more lives if we stayed in this city for an extra day over, both in our men and in them civilians. What say you, colonel?"

The Colonel scratched his head. "Iruk is a big city, i don't have to tell you that, this is gonna be hard and I agree we gotta hit em' hard, put the fear of God in them with some superior firepower." Major Killian stepped up. "Sorry sir, Major Killian. 5th Cavalry Air Brigade. We can move up in advance of the main force give em' a little preemptive strike kill whats out in the streets and make your advance clear. After you guys come in and start sweeping through we can cover you guys and drop our men on the rooftops of the high-rises and secure those buildings." The Colonel nodded still thinking as Killian spoke. "We got the 105th Armored division and the 25th Infantry Division coming in with your armored corps, too so I agree we hit them hard now they will have to start surrendering to superior forces. If they don't then we kill them all. Ain't nobody gonna stand up to 100 Schofields rolling in to town."

The Colonel nodded. "All right then lets get moving."

It was time for school again. Ankya Mivestre stepped outside of her family’s apartment building located somewhere in the sprawling metropolis that was Iruk. She was a little early for school, but her father always said it was better to be early than to be late, because everyone’s time was important. It wasn’t hard to be early though, especially since she liked the first grade. The sun shined unusually bright for the morning, probably because she couldn’t draw the blinds anymore. For some reason, the window was missing and she could no longer reach the handle for the blinds. The night air was a little smoky too, but she managed to fall asleep, her back turned away from the window as she put more blankets from the side closet on her bed. Her last memory of that night was holding her doll, the same doll that was currently in her backpack, sticking out slightly as she walked down the wrought iron stairs to her building.

She loved the stairs to her apartment building. They looked sort of like the stairs from a picture book she brought home from the library about a year ago. After checking the same book out at least a dozen times, she had convinced her lively imagination that sometimes she was a young girl living in a Vekaiyu from 100 years ago, wearing a nice crimson dress who went to a classroom with a beautiful teacher and had a really nice bedroom filled with dozens of toys.

She smiled as she pushed open the door and walked out of her building. The streets and the outside looked messy, like people had forgotten to clean up or the garbage man was sick. It was hard to tell – adults were so complicated. Things were blowing up, even their apartment was a mess when she came home from school yesterday. Whatever was going on, it must’ve been exhausting – everyone around was sleeping, even without being in beds. Her own mother and father were sleeping at the kitchen table, even when she woke up to get ready for school. She took advantage of their sleeping, though. If they were asleep, they couldn’t tell her to take a bath in the morning, could they? Or eat bland oatmeal, no, she could sneak in a candy bar and pack some more in her backpack, along with some of her toys and some coloring books.

Skipping slightly, Ankya moved down the typical path she took nearly every day before getting to school. She looked both ways before crossing the street, even though today there really weren’t any cars moving. As soon as she reached the curb, she pulled off her backpack and searched its contents. Finally, she found what she was searching for – an action figure. Maybe girls weren’t supposed to play with them, but she liked the stories, even if she sometimes felt sorry for the villains that just seemed to have nothing go their way. At least Captain Combat would stop them before the end of the TV show and comic books. She smiled as she positioned his arms above his head and held him horizontally, the muscle-bound vulpine plastic fantastic flying via the grip of her hand. If she closed her eyes and ran without tripping over the uneven sidewalks, she felt like maybe she could fly too.

For a Wednesday morning, the school was surprisingly empty. Did they cancel school? Why didn’t her parents tell her? Ankya walked closer to the building. Like her home, the windows were missing and everything was silent, except for a few gusts of wind here and there. It was almost scary but, with the confidence given to her by her action figure and her doll in her backpack, she decided to look around. After all, she was determined to color – she thought about it all last night, especially since she couldn’t find her crayons at home. She opened the door and stepped in. Maybe she would get in trouble, because children weren’t allowed to go in the school when no one was there, but she’d just run in, grab some crayons, then step out and sit at the wooden picnic tables in the back of the building.

The school was dark on the inside, and every errant creak and thump jostled her resolve. She clenched her action figure in her small hands and continued to walk down the hall until she reached room 121, Kivia Nisakle’s classroom. The door opened with ease and revealed a classroom that was messy just like the outside. It was like some monster had come through and thrown desks around, wrote words on the walls, and broke all the toys. The lights didn’t work either – she even stood on her toes to ensure the switch would flick on and off. No such luck, but that was what the teacher used to turn the lights off during a time out, wasn’t it? Maybe she was missing something. She grabbed a doll on the floor and tried to put its head back on, but gave up after a while when the task proved too hard. Fear wrapped around her as she walked across the carpeted floor toward the crayon box, blocked by a desk and a few fallen posters of penmanship of the Unonian Language, something she always had trouble with.

Her small fingers reached into a hole created by the desks. She grabbed a handful of crayons and jammed them into her backpack. The box was too big to move out of the hole, so she kept moving her hand in and out, grabbing many crayons. It was too dark to really see what colors were which, but hopefully if she grabbed enough she’d have enough to color. No one could have enough crayons.

When she turned around, she nearly fell down as she saw someone sitting on one of the few desks still standing the right way. She didn’t see him before, and she backed away, up to the wall, watching him, making sure he wouldn’t get her. All he did was stare and smile slightly.

“Don’t be frightened,” he replied. He didn’t look like a teacher, but he was dressed nice. His fur was dark, and his hair was black. He must have poked his eye because one of them were opened just a crack. “Do you go to this school?” He waited for her to nod. “I can tell you like to color. I used to love doing that too.” The man rocked his legs back and forth. “Come closer, I’m not going to hurt you. If we work together, we can get this school looking nice again. Would you like to do that?”

She nodded.

“Good.” He moved a hand to a desk as it slowly tipped back onto its right side. Some papers moved onto the surface, followed by a pencil and a paper showing how to write all the Unonian letters. “That wasn’t too hard. Are you hungry?” An apple rolled in front of her from the shadows of the room, disturbing the eerie silence. He watched as she picked the fruit up. “There you go. Will you come forward now?” He paused and looked at her hands. “I’m… like a super hero. But I’m not like the ones on the television – I am a real-life super hero. An angel. You know about angels, don’t you?” He watched as she nodded. “Come. Let’s help make things better.” He stood from the desk and pointed to the doll from earlier as her head jammed back onto her neck. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. Is that apple good?” She nodded again. “Good. Better than the candy in your backpack, I’m sure.”

He smiled as she slowly walked toward him.

The blades of the flock of helicopters beat the air relentlessly as they approached the burning city. Their occupants sweat profusely from the heat and anticipation, some prayed, some checked their weapons, others stared out upon the landscape in silence, the endless mechanical beating of the blades their only source of conversation. From a distance the sprawling metropolis, bathed in the orange glow of fire, was beautiful in a way, picturesque as it stood there awaiting the men who flew towards it. It beckoned to them like a siren beckons to a sailor only to be the end of his life. Iruk would be a grave to some of them, that they knew. The propaganda of their training swirled through their heads bolstering their sense of bravery.

Lock and load, the men manning the turrets checked their mounted weaponry, the pilots checked their altitude, airspeeds, and made sure their weapons were hot for the upcoming assault, the anticipation was so intense it could kill...
