Alvus started eating the lobster claws. "Busy. Very busy. He always seems to make time for me in some way, but he only does it like once every few months. He gets showered with paperwork all the time. I don't envy him, but I'll be eventually taking over for him. That's why I'm all the way out here instead of toiling away in the military academy," Alvus said as he wiped his mouth with a napkin.

"Father thinks it's very important to see the various nations in the East Pacific. I agree with him, frankly; no better way to learn a culture than live in it. 'A Director needs to be cultured as well as informed'," Alvus recited. "Directors are held to a pretty high standard in Raedion-Lucari. They're treated with all the reverence of a world leader, but they lack inflexibility of one. That's why the Board goes to great lengths to ensure that we're classified as a corporate entity, rather than an established government. We just happen to own a big enough piece of land (or island) that we're on the world map." Alvus took a sip of his water as he finished up his lobster.

May looked around her room with satisfaction. Utilitarian perhaps, but it certainly beat the quarters she and her father shared in Xiopothos. Much quieter too now that she was away from the first floor lobby and still no sign of a room-mate. Perhaps she'd get lucky. She'd not spent much time around people close to her in age.

Taking a quick glance through the door and down the empty hallway, she almost skipped to the kitchenette. May checked the cupboards and the drawers, finding pots. pans, cutlery, plates, utensils and a kettle along with other implements of culinary destruction. Everything was clean and its place but almost more importantly, all in places she could reach without having to clamber onto a chair. Relieved, she retrieved the plastic tub full of "gastronomical delights" her father and his team had packed as a surprise for her from her room and claimed one of the bottom shelves in one of the cupboards to store it.

Carrying the cup of hot chocolate she'd made back to her room, she grabbed the fantasy novel she'd been reading and sat by the window. She knew she had to call her father soon. She'd lied to that teaching assistant ... well, not exactly lied, but his comment had been unexpected and she hadn't known how to react. For now though, she'd just sit for a while. Windows and chocolate along with time to just "sit" were a luxury.

Kieran had started eating the cinnamon apples, although he still had some shrimp, fries and other food left. He then asked Alvus, "So, what's your major?"

Alvus started to work on his scallops now. "Political science," he said with a none-too-enthused face. "Vital for a growing leader. I think it's a load of bollocks, frankly. I sort of miss the monotony of military drills. It was my bread and butter," Alvus said as he leaned back in his chair after examining the scallops. "As the possible future Director of Defense I have to be knowledgeable in the fields of diplomacy, and in order to do that I had to take political science as my major. I'm not too knowledgeable anyways about what's going on in the world so this might be a good first step."

"I guess those two go hand in hand with each other, eh?" Alvus finished up his scallops and moved onto the remaining shrimp. "A lot of the paintings I've seen are from the medieval period - all the ones I've seen have been from other countries, though. Raedion-Lucari, or Verania as it was known as in the medieval times, didn't exactly have a... peachy existence. The Ministry of Archeology and History archived it but no one really paid it any attention. The islands all raided each other; some historians think that early Veranians actually used their ships to go as far as Vulshain and Vekaiyu, but that's purely speculation founded on baseless rumor."

Alvus swirled around the water in his glass, having finished his shrimp. "Regardless, Raedion-Lucari has no imagery of its history. We've got an incredibly amount of written history, but no images to really show anything. I guess our ancestors didn't like pictures?" Alvus laughed.

While his parents were just as interested in Alvus' country's art history, their son was intrigued. Their waiter returned and ask if they would be having dessert. The three vulpines started wagging their tails at the mention of 'dessert.' Apparently, they had sweet fangs.

The waiter turned to Alvus and asked, "Will you also be having dessert as well, sir?"

"Ah, no, no thank you. I would prefer to stay off the sweets." Alvus smiled at the waiter.

As the waiter trotted off with the Yivereru family's dessert orders, Alvus cleared his throat and continued. "Well, uh, back to the history. Roughly at around 1010 AD, the archives show that religion was starting to spread throughout Verania - spread mainly through trade, but it doesn't specify with what country. The kicker though, is that each island had its own religion - as in, they were all of different religions. Of course, you can only imagine how much fun it is when they're all zealots." Alvus rolled his eyes.

"Anyways, fast forward about six centuries. Sixteen-something AD - the wars between the islands had died down by then, what with peace pacts and stuff. Veranians started to rebuild, and all we had was our fish. The fish, though," Alvus held up his index finger for emphasis. "Since the Veranians were so busy raiding each other for, oh, several centuries, it let the fish population swell up to insanely huge populations. The Veranians started to fish, and trade their fish with each other, and eventually other nations. That's how the whole corporate thing started. The Veranians started the first 'corporation' on the islands."

Alvus frowned. "Wow, I've been talking this whole time. Didn't let you folks get any say. Sorry about that." He sat back a bit and waited for another cup of water.

Shima smiled as she said, "Oh no. It's alright. We don't mind at all. You see, my husband and I work as historians and artists, so we used to listening to others."

Kieran smiled as his father nodded and smiled. "You don't have to apologize Alvus. If you like you can ask us anything about Vulshain if you like. Learning about others and their cultures is one way to understand the world."

"Well if you don't mind me asking," Alvus said as he leaned forward and rested his elbows on the table. "What's with this whole Rygard business? Seems pretty stupid of a single island nation to declare war on multiple countries, don't you think? Eh, I'm just wondering." Alvus leaned back into his chair again. "So I hear Vulshain has a monarchy, kind of rare these days I think. At least, it's not what I'm used to seeing. How's the government function? And how's the landscape in Vulshain?" Alvus smiled as he said the last question.

Matok explained to Alvus about the Rygardi, before his wife got upset. "The Rygardi are a warmongering and paranoid culture. Come to think of it, I'm guessing that their culture is one of those where 'might makes right,' or something along those lines. I do know from what I've seen, that their architecture is basically Gothic, very dark and gloomy."

Shima calmed down a bit, now that the Rygard question was out of the way. After drinking her tea, she answered the Veranian's question about the government.

"The government is a federal parliamentary representative democratic constitutional elective monarchy. The monarch is considered the head of state, but has several powers granted by the Constitution of the Confederacy. For example, the king can submit bills to the Royal congress, veto and sign legislation, sign, and ratify treaties. Laws passed by Congress must be signed by both the Chief Prime Minister, the head of the government, and the monarch. Vulshain is separated into many different regions, or provinces that each have some autonomy.

Basically, all provinces have equal representation in Congress. The king is the commander-in-chief of all branches of the armed forces. The king also has the power to mitigate and commute punishments. Similar to some countries, the executive power is de facto split between the head of state and the head of the government. In Vulshain's case, between the monarch and the chief prime minister."

She drank some more of her tea as she continued. "However, unlike other monarchies, Vulshain is non-hereditary. Actually, it became non-hereditary after the signing of the Constitution around, I think, 1699..." She paused trying to remember the date. "April 9, 1699, if I'm not mistaken. Since Vulshain is a non-hereditary monarchy, the person elected isn't considered the new monarch until they have taken a constitutional oath. Usually the new monarch is elected from a list of potential heirs, many of whom are descended from ancient royal and noble bloodlines. Luckily for us, Merrill Rivers, the former dictator of our country, failed in exterminating all those who had royal blood. Merrill Rivers was ousted from power in 1985 after he had murdered the king and drove the queen into exile to Southern Yugoslavia. Both Southern Yugoslavia and Vekaiyu came to our aid in restoring the monarchy and getting rid of that son of a--" Matok coughed.

"Excuse me. Sorry about that. Anyways, where were we? Ah, yes, the government. Vulshain has no single national supreme court, although, each province has its own supreme court. Instead of a national supreme court, we have the Federal Confederated Constitutional Court of Vulshain, which is de facto the highest Vulshainian court, as it can declare federal and state legislation immediately ineffective and has the power to overrule decisions of all other federal courts, though not being a regular court of appeals in the Vulshainian court system."

Kieran answered the last question. "Well, Vulshain is a beautiful country, filled with mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, and grasslands. There is some snow, especially during the later months and up in the north, although snow does fall in the south especially around the more central provinces, especially Velra, where Kitsuniva, the capital is located. There are many churches, ancient pagan temples, and cathedrals in Vulshain, especially Kitsuniva and Kitumang, the largest cities in Vulshain. For example, the Cathedral of the Brave Lady, dedicated to Saint Aiya, was built to resemble a flame rising into the sky. Its ribbed and faceted onion domes are of various colors of the rainbow, making it resemble a many colored candle. The Cathedral is a riot of gables, tent roofs, and onion domes. The city also contains many ancient pagan temples, which were preserved even after Vulshain converted to Christianity, mainly for cultural pride."

Alvus nodded. He understood that Rygard was a rather touchy subject with the rest of the East Pacific, even if his father talked about it prolifically.

"So, a constitutional monarchy? Wouldn't that mean the monarch is nothing but a figurehead?" Alvus swirled around his water. "Not that there's anything wrong with it - it's best not to question things when the people are happy and the nation is prosperous." Alvus cleared his throat a little. "I wasn't aware Vulshain was under the control of a dictator for a bit, but Raedion-Lucari has always been out-of-touch with the rest of the world in regards to current events. That extends to me," Alvus sighed.

"Anyways, it sounds like Vulshain's landscape is pretty similar to Raedion-Lucari. We get a lot more snowfall though since a lot of the air currents bring clouds over the islands; that coupled with the frequent cold winds tends to make it snow. As for religion... well, it's tolerated in Raedion-Lucari - after all, each of the islands used to have their own religion. That bred a heck of a lot of tolerance into the Veranians, and that rubs off on us, generations later. It's absolutely forbidden to use religion to incite conflict or hate in any way whatsoever, though. We take a very serious stance on anything that might incite violence in our borders, and the Bastion guards never treat violence cases with mercy. That, supplemented with overwatch security snipers and video surveillance at every single public location helps curb crime a lot - not even the alleys are left blind." Alvus laughed. "Bahaha, what does this have to do with religion? Sorry about that."

"You must join me tomorrow! We are having a beach party before the start of classes! We will have some volley ball, good food, and a bonfire," Centralia suddenly exclaimed thinking about how wonderful it would be for her new found friends to join in their festivities.

"Cen..." Aristes grumbled as he rolled onto his side, "stop scaring the guests. It is only the first day. Let people get situated."

"But Aristes, can you imagine how wonderful it would be? Volley ball! Look at these two, they look like they might be able to put in a good effort into the game. It can be so much fun!"

Aristes just shook his head, knowing that Centralia would continue to invite the friends she made regardless of what he said. Sitting up, Aristes rubbed the afternoon nap out of his eyes and stretched. He had no idea how long he fallen asleep and found himself impressed by the idea that he had fallen asleep around all these strangers. It was like part of him felt safe now and he could ease up on the defensiveness. Rubbing his face then neck, Aristes brought himself more to wake, trying to recall the distorted dream he had.

Shaking his head, he looked back to the two people Centralia seemed engaged with, "So who are your friends?"

"Oh Aristes!" she beamed, "this man here is Omakta Okė. I am not sure he mentioned what nation he is from. And this is Declan from Allegheny! They are new to this school!"

Aristes nodded to them, force of habit since his forced silence the past year. It was not until Centralia urged a proper greeting that Aristes obliged and extended his white gloved hand "Aristes from Suntura in A New Hope."

It was late. Kamron Telek groggily walked out of the elevator, and collapsed on the floor, not caring who was watching or what they were thinking. He had rued this entire trip, ever since he was volunteered for this "exchange program", they called it. His short nearly-snow-white hair was ruffled, and his light skin was covered with sweat that glinted in the dormitory lights. He rubbed his face, taking care to make sure his deep-blue lightning bolt tattoo over his right eye was intact. He examined his baggage and then himself, ensuring that he was still him, the same Kamron Telek, with all his deep-blue warrior tattoos that were given as merits of honor in his training group. Oh, curse the elders, he thought.

He just so happened to be the best of his training group and was selected to attend this "school".

Then they took him aboard this strange flying metal bird (a plane, they called it). He'd seen trucks before (that was what they called it, right? Trucks?) that occasionally happened through the tern*, but he'd never ridden on one or gotten close enough to warrant his interest. As if the trip wasn't enough, it wasn't cold anymore! Kamron had brought enough cold-weather wear that would make even a hardcore mountain climber seem like he was in a swimsuit.

And it was green. So green. It was disgusting. Things were growing anywhere and everywhere, it wasn't cold, clean, and orderly like it was back home in the borderlands. There were so many trucks, and planes, and all sorts of weird vehicles here in this weird, weird place.

And the people! They all looked different! At the airport, while waiting for his transportation, he'd been exposed to so many different sorts of people, some of which didn't even look human! It was around this time that he'd started wondering if he'd lost his mind along the flight.

The ride up to the dormitory wasn't any better. Kamron had a profound lack of communication skill, but was luckily able to give a piece of paper sent to him by the school staff that had the location of where to go on it. Given, he wasn't a bad speaker, he could read just fine, and he understood the language of this new world perfectly fine, but it was all for naught if one didn't know how to speak properly in an unfamiliar world. The ride seemed to take ages. He took interest in the seemingly sparkling blue water; it was nothing like back in the borderlands. It wasn't frozen, and it actually was nice to look at... just about the only up-side of the trip, unfortunately.

And now he was here. And he was tired; so, so tired. He closed his eyes and nearly dozed off into sleep before he realized he needed to get to his room. Where that room was, or who he would be with didn't really concern him at this point; he was just tired.

"Elders be damned!" he quietly cursed. "I'd rather be fighting a felbear in my undergarments than be doing this! ...never felt more lost in my entire life..." he continued to grumble.

He left the elevator atrium and happened upon the strange L-shape of the dorm.

Now he really was lost.

Damn.

Okė cautiously extended his own hand towards the one that Aristes had extended as if he half expected that he would be burned if he touched it. He had been taught about this custom of greeting, "shaking hands" but so far in his brief time abroad had never been put in a situation where he had to practice it himself. Now that he had been forced into such circumstances, he could not help but worry that he would make a mess of his first time. Still, the prospect of the novel experience also produced an excited anticipation. The combination of these two diametrically opposed sets of emotions caused his paw to tremble slightly up until the moment of contact.

When the gap between their two palms had finally be closed and Okė found that he had not been physically maimed in some fashion or another, he felt a bit more confident. He tightened his grip and moved his hand up and down in time with Aristes's. "I am Omakta Okė, I am happy to meet you, I mean, I am from Novajot." He smiled an ingratiating and nervous smile as he stumbled over his words, now unsure whether or not one was supposed to always state their place of origin. When Aristes appeared to take no visible offense, Okė relaxed and let his hand free itself from his.

The elevator dinged and the doors closed. Then ... nothing. No footsteps, no voices. Curious, May put down her book, walked to her still open door and peered into the hall. She didn't see anyone, but that didn't mean anything; the dorm was L-shaped. It had been so silent since she'd come up that the dinging and then nothing was almost unnerving.

Shima smiled when she saw hers and her family's orders arrive. Kieran had ordered a chocolate fudge double-layered cake layered with creamy mousse and topped with dark chocolate ganache, while Matok had ordered a German-style pumpkin pie cheesecake strawberry and blueberry toppings. Shima had ordered a raspberry-swirled white chocolate cheesecake with a molten chocolate center, topped with vanilla ice cream and slivers of white chocolate, and drizzled with chocolate sauce.

While eating, Kieran asked, "So, what was school like in your country?"

-------------------------------------------------

Harrison Workman, an art teacher walked through the halls with the help of his cane. He then noticed a female Vulpine talking with another professor. He walked over to them. "Hello," he said. He paid no attention to the other professor's large scar or anything. In fact, he didn't feel intimidated one bit by the other man. "Nice outfit," he said to the Vulpine. "I hope you will be taking my art class here at Shiro Academy. I heard Vulpines are excellent artists. I hope you will prove that statement correct." He walked off.

"Um, yes, hello! I appear to be very lost! I'm a new student and I'm in room, uh..."

His bags laying on the ground, Kamron quickly opened and searched through them. Ceremonial medallion, nope. Standard-issue combat knife, nope. Where did he leave it?

He fidgeted around his clothing's storage compartments and quickly went through them, when the realization hit him.

Damn! He had left his papers in the vehicle on his way here! Curses! Probably long gone by now, he had hoped. He was secondly thankful that none of his tribesmen were here to witness this incredibly stupid slip of thought that he had just pulled.

"School? Military academy. When you're taught by some of the best, and trained by some of the best, it tends to turn you into... one of the best? I don't know. It was pretty hard either way - final exams that would make any casual professors cry, and training courses that would break a lot of veteran soldiers. I guess that could be said for many courses and classes throughout the East Pacific, huh? I don't think we're really any different, but it's the stuff we use that really sets us apart." Alvus waved a waiter over, and asked for more water.

"School is... boring. It always was, for me. I always get average grades - father wasn't particularly amused by this, but I could do better if I really wanted, I just haven't tried to yet. I get average eighty to ninety percent, but never higher - I don't see any reason to go higher. Mandatory breadth courses are really such a bore."

"Don't worry about misplacing them. You can go back down to ..." She broke off, eyes widening, at the sight of the lightening bolt over his eye, his shock of white hair, short though it was. and the fact he was simply sprawling on the floor.

"Are you OK? You're hurt? Um. Sorry. I didn't mean to stare. I've never seen a tattoo like that before. What's it mean? Wait. I'm sorry. That was rude. You'll tell me if you want to. Kieran smiled and nodded. "Of course. Just like our Vekaiyun and Listonian cousins, Vulshainians have many aquatic sports, ranging from water polo, underwater rugby, underwater handball, underwater lacrosse, and underwater hockey. However, unlike other nations, probably yours too, no offense, but Vekaiyuns and Vulshainians don't neglect the spectator part of such aquatic sports. Much like display tanks in aquariums, spectators get a first-hand experience by allowing them to see the action taking place from transparent sides of the arena. I've never been able to understand why other nations don't do the same thing." He shrugged as he took another bite of his dessert.

"From my viewpoint, I'd say space issues," Alvus said. "That, coupled with safety regulations. I don't think it would hold down very well before the Board about surrounding an enormous amount of water with nothing but glass. Not to mention it's very cold where I'm from, aquatic sports are very rare. There are indoor pools and whatnot, but they're mostly for casual recreation than full-on sports."

The Yivererus blinked in surprise at Alvus. "Well, the glass would have to be very strong, but still--"

Shima coughed and said in Unonian, "Kieran, mind your manners. You can force-feed your own culture down someone else's throat."

In Unonian, Kieran answered, "Yes, momma."

In English, Matok said to Alvus as he put down his fork after eating his entire dessert, "So, Alvus, what other languages do you know besides English? As you have probably seen, we speak Unonian, German, and Russian."

Both Kieran and Shima glared at Matok for always cleaning his plates before them. He paid no attention to them.

"Regarding my languages... right now I only know English and Veranian. Russian is very similar to Veranian so I can easily speak that, if I really wanted to. Other than that... well, I don't speak anything else other than that. My father speaks Utrechtian, though. Not sure if anyone's every heard of that - they're a very, very small minority in Raedion-Lucari but they're the ones in charge of communications. Pretty handy during wartime - no one can understand our comm chatter."

"Don't be silly Aristes, I'd love to join your festivities. What better way to get situated then to make new friends right?" Declan said excitedly. Declan returned the introduction. Declan from Plainview, Republic of Allegheny. You will have to excuse me my world geography knowledge is a almost non existent. Living in Allegheny's partially introverted society will do that to you."

"I see. Hm...I might have to visit your nation one day and learn some Utrechtian, if that's possible."

The waiter returned and refilled their drinks and left.

Kieran then said, "So, dad, were you able to get the mini-fridge for us?"

"Yes, I was able to get it set up before Alvus came in."

"Ah, so we have a place for leftovers."

"Alvus, what types of sports or hobbies do you do? Kieran likes to read and do artwork."

Take a drag.
"Hm, not sure about that. I don't think our foreign affairs office is prone to reopening visitors any time soon. After the recent fiasco with the crazed gunman I told you about, the security corporations have seen fit to temporarily close down travel to the islands to investigate the gunman's background and possible connections. Can't risk anything right now, unfortunately."

"Anyways, I don't do any sports, to be frank. I body-build, though; that's about it. Not one for hobbies, and I don't particularly enjoy reading, either. I guess you could say I just sit around and... work out?" Alvus shrugged. "I guess you are all finished with your desserts? We should head back to the dormitory."

Yivererus nodded. When the waiter returned, they asked for boxes. The waiter nodded and went about putting their foods in boxes. He even put whatever was left of Alvus' meal in a box as well. Matok handed him a credit card to pay for the meal, while also leaving a generous tip in the local currency. "It's always a good idea to have the local currency on hand," Shima said as the waiter returned. His eyes widened at the sight of the tip. "Um...Thank you," he said as he carefully put the boxes of food into bags so they could be easily carried. After Matok signed the credit receipt, the Yivereus and Alvus were ready to leave.
