Though she still couldn't see him, May walked towards the voice, chuckling in spite of herself at his last comment.

"Don't worry about misplacing them.  You can go back down to ..."  She broke off, eyes widening, at the sight of the lightening bolt over his eye, his shock of white hair, short though it was. and the fact he was simply sprawling on the floor.

"Are you OK?  You're hurt?  Um.  Sorry.  I didn't mean to stare.  I've never seen a tattoo like that before.  What's it mean?  Wait.  I'm sorry.  That was rude.  You'll tell me if you want to.  I shouldn't have asked."  She shook her head in frustration, eyeing him appraisingly.  "Do you need a hand getting up?"

"Um, no, thanks, I'm good. I can... get up just fine." He helped himself up and took charge of his baggage.

"This tattoo? It's a mark of being a warrior-in-training. Had I actually stayed home and completed survival training, I probably would have gotten markings along my right forearm that indicated that I was a warrior. That was the only one left. Ah, well, I suppose this is a different sort of survival, now isn't it?" He was looking at the ceiling, seemingly fascinated with the lights.

"I don't know where my room is, but I'm sure I'm on the roster, so I suppose I'll just stay here until the leader or whoever is in charge of this hall comes back, I guess." He moved towards the lounge sofas, put down his baggage, and made himself comfortable.

He's as uncomfortable as I am ... but at least he didn't seem to mind my asking him about the tattoos. No more questions for now though. It's rude.

Following his eyes, May looked at the ceiling and squinted, trying to see what had caught his attention.

Nothing there but the lights ... no leaks ... no mould ... what's wrong with the lights?

May walked after him into the lounge and sat down on the sofa across from him smiling hesitantly and twisting a strand of her long hair between her fingers.

"I won't stay too long if you'd rather be by yourself. Need to make a call home. I ... um ... I don't know if someone will come up or if you'll have to go down to the first floor lobby. There were a ton of people there to help. If you want, you can put your stuff in my room for now and I could go down with you to find out what room is yours." By offering to go with him, surely he'd figure out she wouldn't go through his stuff. "I don't have a room mate. At least, there's no one there yet so no one will touch your stuff."

There was a short pause after he sat down.

"You know, the lights here are different," he mentioned. "They're really bright. We didn't really have these sorts of lights back home. Usually they didn't work all that great or were really outdated."

He looked at his baggage. "As for the room... well, it's not as if I can just go knocking on every door and ask if they're my roommate, now can I?" He laughed. "Well, I'm sure whoever is in charge of this place will return soon. I hope. I might have to take you up on that offer, though. Might have to head downstairs soon enough and ask for my keys or whatever."

He fidgeted in his clothes. Heavy duty-wear made for cold-weather heat-insulation suddenly didn't feel so comforable anymore.

Alvus and the Yivereru family arrived back at the dorm, and took the elevator to the fifth floor. As the elevator opened, Alvus showed genuine surprise.

"Kamron! Pftt hahahaha! Did your elders decide to send you instead? Wait, how did you get here? Did they send you in a plane? Oh, I remember how the lead elder shook his fist at it." Alvus chuckled as he strode over to where Kamron was sitting. As he got nearer, he noticed that Kamron was talking with a girl with long black hair.

"Oh, hello. Are you helping my friend here find his room? Hey Kamron, did you bring your papers? Wait, no. Obviously not. You really should have sent a message to me, you know. I could have helped you move in, and maybe I wouldn't have been so lonely on the plane trip here." Alvus sighed. "Come on, we need to go find Terrus."

"Oh, thank the elders, a friendly face! It's good to see you again, Alvus."

He stood up.

"And you're right. I lost my papers. I suppose Terrus must be the leader of this tern?"

Alvus frowned. "Hey, don't ignore the nice lady here. She tried to help you too. And yes, Terrus would be the guy in charge. He's on the first floor, did you miss him? I really need to educate you on how things work out here one day. It's not like they throw you in a random room, you know. Well, technically, they do, but still. It's on the registries, which you would know if you bothered to print your papers." Alvus patted Kamron on the shoulder. "I don't know why the elders sent you down here without nary a thought of how things work, especially this far. What- are you wearing your parka?" Alvus took a step backwards. "Good god, man. Change out of that thing."

Alvus took this opportunity to turn to the Yivereru family, watching nearby. "Ah, yes. Yivereru family, Kamron Telek. We worked together for a year to take down a felbear - not a pretty job, but it was fun playing in the snow." Alvus turned toward the nearest window. "Playing. Hm, maybe not so much. Anyways, Kamron, Yivererus; Yivererus, Kamron."

Kamron turned quickly to May and bowed. "I'm deeply sorry for ignoring you. Thank you very much for your help."

He turned back to Alvus and the Yivereru family.

"It's a pleasure to meet you. Yes, what Alvus said was true, we have worked together before. And it wasn't so much playing in the snow than it was tracking down a fully-grown polar bear the size of one of your military fighter jets. It was a great challenge, though."

Kamron fidgeted again. "I better get out of this damned parka... so where do I go to change?"

The Yivererus smiled. Matok, introduced the family. "Hello, Kamron Telek. It is nice to meet you. My name is Matok Yivereu, and this is my wife, Shima, and our son, Kieran. Kieran will be one of your fellow students here." Matok stuck out his hand, as he gave a fang-filled smile.

Thrown off by the influx of newcomers, May fixed a smile on her face and nodded whenever she thought anyone would figure it appropriate. Alvus, Kamron, Kieran ... guess I wasn't a friendly enough face ... nice he's found someone he knows though ...

Unobserved, she slipped out of the lounge and went back to her room, quietly closing the door behind her.

Standing in front of the mirror on the back of the wardrobe she appraised herself critically. Waist-length, almost black, curly hair, dark brown eyes, under five foot tall ... but just barely under .... The one named Alvus had called her a lady. Maybe it was her clothes? Black leggings tucked into black laced-up boots and her favourite long black tunic ... did that make her look like a lady? Puzzled, she turned away from the mirror and walked to her desk, activating the small holographic communication device given her by a friend of her father's.

"Dad?"

She grinned as his head swivelled away from the research paper he'd been reading in the lab, a broad smile lighting up his face.

"May! You're all settled in?"

"Unpacked and enjoying the windows! There's one in the kitchen and I even have one in my room!"

He chuckled. "Well, don't spend all your time looking out them ... get outside and have a look around. Far more to be enjoyed by being there than just looking at what's there."

"I will, in a bit. I ... um ... I kinda lied to someone earlier today." As a frown started to take the place of his warming smile she quickly continued. "It wasn't intentional, Dad. One of the teaching assistant's recognised my last name and wanted to know if I was your daughter. He knew your name."

"May, why didn't you just say that Kuragosa was a common name?"

"I should have. I know I should have, but he got it wrong. He called you a bio-engineer. I said I WAS your daughter but kinda implied you were dead."

With a slight smile, Kuragosa shook his head. "What am I going to do with you? I don't need you standing up for me. Just stick to the truth. No one can get at me here and Rachel would never have suggested Shiro if she thought there was any risk to you. Now, get outside for a while and enjoy it."

"Dad, I wasn't worried about ..."

"May, go outside. Meet some people your own age. Love you."

The image dissipated. He'd shut it down. Muttering to herself, May walked over to the window and then looked longingly at her book. No. Somehow he'd know if she sat back down. She'd never been able to lie to him, not that she'd want to.

A look of resignation on her face, May checked the floor map and headed down the elevator to the first floor and then outside.

Alvus and Kamron stood at the first floor - now with less people, now that the majority of the students had found their dorms, but it still had a line. Alvus walked to the back and motioned Kamron forward - Kamron followed soon after.

Alvus leaned his head above the line to gauge the distance to the front. "Argh, what a line. At least it wasn't as many people as there were before." He returned to his normal stance. "So, why are you here anyways? I didn't think the elders to be the foreign study type. Is it because your father thought it would be a good idea for a Senvrothian to socialize with other nationalities?"

Kieran said goodbye to his parents as they left for the hotel they were staying at. They had decided to spend their anniversity together. Of course, Kieran's moving in day at Shiro Academy just happened to be around the same time as their wedding anniversity.

His parents were a little annoyed at it, but they were nonetheless proud of their kit for being accepted into Shiro. They decided to spend their anniversity touring the Free Pacific States.

Kieran, having made sure his and Alvus' room was locked and secure, went off to explore a little. He was curious to see all of the different people who may be his classmates. He then noticed Alvus talking with the person he had called Kamron. He overheard part of their conversation concerning something about elders and Senvrothian. Curious, he decided to see what they were talking about. He walked up to them. "Hi, Alvus and Kamron. I hope I'm not interrupting anything."

"Oh, no, not really. Just about to answer Alvus's question, actually." He cleared his throat.

"Anyways, the reason why I'm here was something I'd already stated. We were outreached as part of an exchange program, and I was the lucky one to be accepted, partly due upon my family, and the other to my exemplary abilities in training. Yes, my father thought it would be a good idea to experience other cultures and people. He's worried about me being targeted as a political hostage due to his meteoric rise within the Elder Tribunal, so he sent me here where it would be extremely hard to reach me."

He looked around, then leaned in, speaking quietly so that only Alvus and Kieran could hear.

"Based upon his information, he believes that I'd already been targeted by the largest of the bandit groups back home, the White Wolves, and had I stayed any longer, they would have attacked. He's given me a weapon as a... precaution, should things here go awry. Hopefully it won't come to that."

Why is he almost always right?

It was beautiful out here. Much better to feel a part of the warmth of the sun, the light breeze and the clumps of trees away from the buildings than simply to see them through the window. May nodded and smiled politely as she passed small clusters of students on the paths from the dorm. She bypassed what looked like a picture from one of her books as a child ... a group of four had a blanket spread out on the lawn and were talking, eating and drinking. She felt almost wistful as she stopped and watched them from a distance for a moment. They seemed to be enjoying themselves. She had only vague personal memories herself of what her mother used to call "blanket feasts" but then, dad hadn't been home much when she was young. He'd always been at the lab or out of the country. And then ... oh well. Life was full of changes or so they'd kept telling her.

Cresting a small hill, an unexpected combination of black and white amongst the greenery and paths caught her eye. A man, dressed all in black, and someone dressed in white and black were just ... standing. They didn't seem to be talking like the rest of those she'd passed. They were simply looking at one another. Interested, she leaned up against the closest tree and watched them.

Kieran's tail puffed out as he became a little worried. Quickly regaining his composure, he asked, "Kamron, I overheard you mention elders. By elders, do you mean prime ministers or members of a congress or parliament or something similar?" The young vulpine was curious about learning more about his fellow students' countries. He was also very interested in that female human student he saw earlier talking to Kamron. "What was her name," he wondered as he awaited for Kamron's answer. However, his mind kept wandering back to that female human and how beautiful she looked.

"They're tribals, Kieran. Elders I think are the closest things they've got to a leader within their nation. Kamron here," Alvus nodded toward him, " is the son of the warrior chief - I guess their de facto foreign leader, who also happens to be the army's leader as well. Of course, not all the other tribes want to be united under a single banner," Alvus said nodding to Kamron again. "Kamron's tribe consists of the majority percentage of tribes who have decided to band together. Some oppose that. Usually violently. A prideful group they are - they see foreigners as a blight on the land. Sounds kind of familiar, wouldn't you think?"

Kieran nodded. "Yes, various nations have had similar experiences where groups who are anti-foreign and highly nationalistic oppose any form of interference from outside groups, not to mention also opposing their fellows who would try and understand foreign ways. Vulshain has always been a nation of tolerance. Well, almost, always, taking into account of when Merrill Rivers had control of our nation for a while."

He didn't want to bore them, so he went back to the topic at hand. "So, what is your country like Kamron?"

"What's it like? Well, if you're not training, you're farming in the agri-domes, and if you're not farming, then you'd better hope to high hell that the elders don't catch you slacking off. Not that people really do it much, usually only the crazily arrogant people do that, and they don't stay long in the tern. Training is very strict back home but it's something that every male has to go to in order to survive in the harsh borderlands."

He stared up the line, frowning at the still-decent number of people in line.

"The females don't have to go through training. Well, not like that. They go into domestic training; things like how to cook, make clothing, things that help the tern as a whole. Their training is pretty strict, too, from what I've heard. Everything we learn in the tribe always has a nice thick silver lining of 'survival' somewhere on it."

He paused for a moment. "Oh, yes, I forgot. A tern is a word equivalent of 'village' where I come from. The 'mother' tern is the capitol, and where I resided prior to coming here."

He pondered for a moment. "Other than that, there's only one thing that you really should know about it: it's cold. Crazily cold."

Kieran grinned. "Cold? Ha! No offense, but I'm from the Mountain Province of Kauru, where it is cold. Our province is known as the Winter Flower Province because of the winter flowers, snowflake shaped flowers. Similar to snowflakes, no two winter flowers are alike. By the way, you and Alvus mentioned something about a felbear...or was fallbear? Hellbear?" Kieran couldn't remember what the creature was called. "I'm guessing it's a species similar to a polar bear but with the temperment of a grizzly bear. Mean and nasty."

"Felbear its called, hellbear would probably be a more fitting term. Senvrothian winters are very, very abnormal, Kieran - mainly in the fact that they aren't snowstorms, they're icestorms. Get caught unarmored or unprotected, or in the open when one starts up and all they'll find of you after it's over is your boots. Felbears are naturally able to move through these icestorms because of their incredibly thick skin and equally thick fur - a trait which also doubles as protection against, say, firearms and missile launchers. Senvrothians utilize special techniques to take those things down."

Alvus nudged Kamron in the side. "Oh yea, that one we were killed - how big was it?"

"Four men tall and about 16 long if laid down and put together in a line. Nasty beast. The icestorm also double as camouflage when felbears travels. They know very well that nothing can touch them in those storms, which is part of their insane un-trackability. Any evidence of a felbear is just washed away in an icestorm."

Kieran's eyes widened, his tail puffed out, and his ears flattened against his head. "That's...that's bigger than a polar bear! My God, you would have to take the thing down with an assault rifle or a tank!" Kieran hoped he never had to meet a felbear as long as he lived.

"Well, not even those can take it down. In our tribe, centuries of hunting them have resulted in highly specialized, but unfortunately very burdensome, weapons designed specifically to kill felbears. That doesn't mean that it works every time, though. We usually have to call upon our entire military force to take down a full-grown one."

He nodded. "Yes, that probably sounds about right. It's a good thing nobody's been able to capture one and bring it out of the borderlands. It's probably even better that no one will want to capture one. We've had our fair share of curious researchers that have met many an untimely end at the jaws of a felbear."

His face grew solemn. "There was an incident a long time ago during the early days of the tribe where they actually encountered a whole pack of felbears. The details are so gruesome that only the highest of the elders can know about it. It was a massacre of our people that took a long time to recover from."

"My folks tried to help track them," Alvus said as he stepped foward, line progressing. "No dice. Those icestorms are thick as hell, not even our thermal scanners could pick them up in that maelstrom. Tanks probably aren't a good idea either - they have senses, just like us. They can definitely hear a tank, or probably plural tanks, coming towards them, not that you'd want to do that. Tanks are really nothing more than canned food to them. It's a real miracle that they don't attack any settlements, at least not the ones nearer to the coast."

"Uh, there... isn't really any 'wildlife' in Senvroth. Most natural wildlife was domesticated long ago and have strict tabs kept on them, and are usually located deep within terns to prevent attacks from destroying our animal supply. The felbears are probably the only animal that openly roams the borderlands."

"At the moment, though, felbears are the least of our problems. Bandits have been worrying gaining foothold in the borderlands, and prior to my departure, we were about to engage them in open warfare. Nasty stuff, that. No cover, high ground is the favored ground and anywhere else in between is a killbox."

Mathias looked down at the vulpine student before him, studying her as she uncomfortably fidgeted in his presence. The almost imperceptible cocking of his head seemed to suggest he might be examining how serious she was, as if he found it comical that she might actually expect a response from him, but the expression on his face remained fixed. He appeared in all aspects to be a man who lived through the most dire consequences of war for the greater part of his entire life and the hardened fixed expressionless face may have confirmed that instantly if she never learned anything more about him.

But there it was the uncomfortable albatross between them. She had noticed the scar and despite her every attempt avoid looking it at she, she was drawn to it. But it was a scar he had a long time and he had expected this response.

Stepping back out of her way, he extended his white gloved hand along the path, motioning for her to carry on. Without a word uttered between them, she felt the sense this was a man who no longer needed words in his life.

But the question was there, like it always was, could he talk?

And the thought played in her head. Building up the courage to ask but afraid to know, she uncomfortably stood there, debating whether to go on or try to elicit a conversation from the man when she noticed that he was no longer looking at her but back behind her, clearly looking at something in the distance.

She spun around expecting to see something to explain his distraction. He seemed a man who could only be distracted by the mushroom cloud appearing on the horizon. But all she could find besides some students who mulled about was a young woman who was leaning against a tree either exhausted from a walk or enjoying the moment. Nothing out of the ordinary. So why was he staring? What could be so intent on analyzing? What besides those mulling students and lone student could be important enough to catch the eye of a man who had probably seen it all?

Uncertain she remained there for a moment, looking again to Mathias whose stare was still fixed in the direction of the young woman. And it was there that she got the distinct impression they were watching each other, each silently analyzing the other....two fierce masterminds meeting the other for the first time. Or was it something else? Mutual pain?

Turning back, no other students remained but the girl. It had to be her he was watching, but why?

"Should I get her?" Iliyana asked as she continued to look at the girl. Her own discomfort with how to interact with this man taking control. Thinking it might be best to just ask her since he might have been able to, Iliyana waved to the girl, motioning for her to join them as she turned back to Mathias.

But he was already walking away, heading in the direction of the nearest building. And it was in his presence that it seemed to suggest that one should only follow if they were ready for what awaited.....a general leading a suicide mission.

Aristes let a humored laugh play across this face. Declan seemed to be someone he could relate to at this school. Between the hordes of increasing anthropomorphic students, crazy children, and bizarre psychopaths he had seen waltz through these doors, he began to become jaded about the "elite" quality of Shiro and determined that their admission standards were so low that that corpse from The Dictatorship could probably enroll.

Leaning back and resting her head in Aristes lap, Centralia looked up and pretended to pout to him, "are you going to come too? I need someone to protect me."

Shaking his head, Aristes chanced a playful smile, "Cen....you always need protecting. You are the most carefree person alive."

"GREAT!" she beamed as she bounced up, "then it's on. Oke and Declan we are meeting tomorrow! Bring your friends and we will provide the food!"

Despite not being able to see his facial features, May knew the man was staring directly at her. Not moving, just staring at her. She'd never liked being stared at although, in fairness, she did her fair share of it. Sometimes people were so, so very difficult to understand. They said one thing, meant another and their body language seemed to say something different again. Often they lied. Science and numbers were far more predictable and much easier to understand.

It felt ... odd. Not uncomfortable precisely and certainly not threatening, just ... odd. Normally she'd likely have turned away, unwilling to spend the time trying to decipher hidden meanings that would likely ensue from a conversation with someone who stared so intently but for some reason, she didn't. When the person standing with him waved at her, May watched the man turn and walk away and simply knew from the body language that the other person hadn't realised he'd gone before waving to her to come join them. Hesitating for only a moment, May quickly walked down the hill seeing, as she got closer, that the person who had been with the man was a female Vulpine.

"Hi," May spoke quietly so as not to startle the woman who was watching the door in the nearby building that the man had entered. As the woman in black and white turned, May extended her hand. "Hi, I'm May. May Kuragosa. I'm new here this term. Who was that?"

"Oh, uh... I'm not sure really. It was really more of a matter of convenience to have me here than it was for education. I'm sure I'll find something in the meantime. I'm not too entirely acquainted with how this whole 'school' works."

The line seemed to inch along very slowly.
