Sonny smiled at the vulpine and the human girl. "Hi," he said. "My name's Woodward. Nice to meet you both." He then gave Aristes his ice cream. "It's cool. You two can sit with us. The more the merrier." He then noticed the vulpine's dress. "That's a nice looking dress. You from Vulshain?" |

May had been startled by the sheer number of people in the room; it was far worse than the lobby. With people crowding both in front of them and behind as they moved through the food line, she'd quickly ordered a plate of rice topped with some sort of spicy sauce and vegetables, some of which she even recognised. The greasy offerings had no appeal at all. She'd shot a look at the guy behind her who'd hit her head with his tray but he'd seemed totally oblivious to her presence. And the noise! Far, far too many people. Following Iliyana as closely as she dared without either jostling her or being jostled, May was relieved when they stopped by a table with a couple of open chairs that May hadn't even been able to see. Claiming one of the chairs, she sat beside the guy with the gloves, giving a quick smile of thanks to the three of them and trying to leave enough room for Iliyana to sit down without getting her dress tangled in the chair legs. "I'm May ... and no ghost. We were just registering for a class." Talking about the man didn't seem right. Finally taking a good look at each of them, she vaguely recognised one of the faces. "I think we met upstairs, no? I'm afraid I didn't catch your name." The other two she hadn't seen before. She'd certainly have recognised the big guy ... if he stood, she'd barely come up to his waist. And the one with the gloves? Maybe it was cultural to eat with them on. |

Aristes just looked to May with a cocked eyebrow and shrugged, assuming the class was a course in Death and Dying. Looking at his own tray, he began to become uncomfortable again with the nearly palpable noise and bodies pressing in around him. He had chosen his seat to be away from the most people but they seemed to close in around him in hordes. Stealing another sip of his drink, he barely noticed that Sonny was trying to hand him an ice cream cone. Instead, he seemed more intent on trying to block out some memory as he turned back to eating quietly. |

The registration process was mundane, almost mechanical, and Vivian responded to it all with a smile on her face, filling out each of the papers with an ease and grace as if she might never tire from such a mundane task. When she was settled in, she toured the campus, taking it all in, responding to the few people who stopped to talk to her. She made her way to the cafeteria, following a group of students who seemed to be heading for something to eat. And it was well after they sat that she decided to follow them, learning who these people were. Walking over to the table, she brushed her hair behind her ear as she looked to the other students who were sitting there. "Do you mind if I join you?" she asked politely, seeing an empty chair still available. |

Declan stood up and smiled at the newcomer, mostly because she was attractive. "Sure you can join us! I am sure nobody will object to having another person here, the more the merrier right?" He said nervously. "The name is Declan, I am new here, from Allegheny. Kinda glad to be away from the winter weather back home. Are you a new student also or is this just another semester for you?" |

Aristes casually looked up to the woman and then to Declan who seemed to grow nervous and laughed to himself. His newfound friend was proving to be dynamic enough and he felt that his life would be less mundane around Declan. "Might as well....like I said, we have not reached our quota for crazy yet. We have more room for it," Aristes finished his drink and crossed his arms as he looked around at the table's occupants, finding himself amused at the diversity their table now had. "So what is your name? You studying anything or are you here just to socialize?" Ariste's seemed to gauge her as he spoke, his standoffish attitude coupled with a sarcastic smile. Vivian leaned forward slightly as she moved the chair closer to the table, her cleavage protruding from the top she was wearing as she did so. "My name is Vivian. I am new to this campus. I came to study political science. I heard that Shiro Academy was the most prestigious school. I figured I should get the best education if I want to actually accomplish my goals of becoming a political leader one day," her voice was soft, smooth, and her smile kind. "Huh," Aristes seemed to respond with a shrug, "politics...." the word came out with a sneer as if the man despised politics. But the truth was, as he looked at this woman, he began to feel he had something he could actually discuss with her. Politics....a hairy subject and while he came to Shiro to remain under the radar, he could not escape that he was groomed to lead his nation and his natural interest in politics was now spurned with her mere mention of the topic. "Well what is your name sir? If you are going to sneer, may I ask what do you find more interesting?" "Engineering.....and the name is Aristes," Aristes responded, "I would offer to shake your hand but we are a table away and I do not think May would appreciate me reaching over her food for a casual encounter." "Engineering?" Vivian seemed interested with his response, curious about the man who now sat before her. Her eyes seemed to lock onto Aristes long enough to make him uncomfortable, as if he were being analyzed as a threat or not. Turning back to his meal, he broke eye contact with her, looking instead for something to eat. "What about you Declan? What do you do find interesting?" she asked as she turned from Aristes and back to the originator of the conversation. |

"Not for me, Woodward," May smiled gesturing at her barely touched plate. "Thanks, though." May had ignored Aristes' shrug when she'd declined to be more specific about "ghosts" but he'd seemed to find something funny as he looked around the table and laughed to himself. Quota of crazy? That's the second time he's used that word. I don't get it. And why would someone come all the way here just to socialise? Curiously, she eyed Vivien, admiring the way she diffused Aristes' sarcasm and the way she elicited an answer before focussing on Declan. She resumed eating, content to listen. |

Before either Centralia or Brandon had a chance to reply to Okë, the trio's coversation was interrupted by a rumbling from the stomach of the latter. Okë grinned sheepishly as his ears dipped down in slight embarrassment. "Oh, I'm sorry about that, I guess it's been a lot of time since I ate because of my traveling," he apologized quite sincerely, uncertain of how much of an offense such a faux pas was in the alien culture in which he was presently immersed. "I probably should eat something. I'm sorry to leave too soon, but it was good to meet both of you." He half nodded, half bowed to Centralia and Brandon in turn, and then lingered for a few seconds, still not entirely sure of whether or not what he was doing was entirely acceptable to the pair. When neither of them voiced any objections, and indeed continued to look as amicable as ever, he returned their smiles and then departed. He found the dining hall with as much ease as he had found his dorms upon his arrival, assisted this time by both the convenience of directional signs as well as by scent. Not surprisingly, the place was packed with other students also in search of food. As he waded into the living sea a fraction of his previous doubt and painful selfconsciousness crept back up from where he'd stowed it away, but memories of the incredibly warm reception he'd received from everyone he'd met so far let him quell the offending emotions a second time. It also helped that a great deal of his thoughts were already being used to search for something good to eat. He began to wander aimlessly around the place, his nose busily processing the plethora of odors entering it, trying to identify one which seemed enticing. Naturally, he recognized none of them, it would be absurd to think that such a far off country would have identical culinary traditions. After several minutes he finally settled on one which, when he traced it back to its point of origin, turned out to be hamburgers. It wasn't until he had picked one up along with fries that it occurred to him that he would have to find a place to sit, and all of the tables already seemed to have been taken by someone. He wasn't sure he could just walk up to some complete strangers uninvited and ask to impose upon their meal. So it was a boon when he realized that he recognized one of the table's diners from before, both during checkin and from on the campus grounds. Invigorated by his good luck, he made a beeline for them. "Um, excuse me," he said to draw attention to his presence. He also noticed that he did not recognize some of the people. "I think we met before? Can I sit with you? I can't find another place for eating." He smiled meekly. |

"Hey Okë," Aristes spoke with a half glance up at the man he and Declan had met earlier. "Find a seat I guess. Where is-" "THERE YOU ARE!" his answer came in the voice of a woman that beamed as he was suddenly assaulted by the woman throwing her arms around him. "I was wondering where you were. You ran off in the middle of our picnic, you should have told me you were hungry." Centralia pulled away from her embrace of Aristes and slid her way onto his chair, nearly pushing him off with an ease and gentleness as she joined the table. "Hello everyone! I hope you do not mind that I join you. Okë reminded me that I too have not yet eaten dinner and it was getting late. I am rather pleased to see you already met Aristes, my little ray of sunshine in this world," she spoke as she rested her head on his shoulder in an attempt to get him to liven up. Aristes seemed to grow quiet though, not responding to Centralia's affection, but rather he looked down at what remained of his dinner and remained motionless. The table's occupants were growing in numbers and the augmenting noise was beginning to make him uncomfortable. Now that Centralia was here, he felt the protective instinct in him arise, his heart pounding as he stepped off the helicopter for the first time wearing his uniform to stand before the Fuhrer. Tensing by the minute, he began to grow suspicious of his occupants. May could easily be a ruthless killer, a connection to men of murder, a link that could bring destruction. Iliyana was a conspirator, she would overthrow them all if she had the chance. Sonny.....no doubt the meathead fried his brain with testosterone and would be an easy grunt. Slap a gun and a bullet proof vest on the man and send him off in the front lines and he could do some serious damage before being taken down. Then there was Okë. Quiet, contemplative. Born to be a leader. He could drive militaries to annihilate them. And amid it all, there was Vivian and as he looked up at her with that suspicious glance, she smiled at him knowing, as if to say to him, yes, she understood. "I need to go," he murmured before hastily sliding out of the chair away from Centralia and bumping into May on his way out. Quickly he left the room, leaving the table in a moment of confusion as if someone had deeply offended the man before Centralia smiled and reclaimed control. "He never eats this food," she smiled, subtly explaining his dash away from them as a need to find a bathroom. "How you got him to eat such greasy food in the first place is impressive. He must like you guys," she offered with a soft smile as she looked around at the table's occupants to remember who had found favor with Aristes, that in finding favor with the man they must have been worthy people. |

"Aw jeez, see you later Aristes, I guess." Declan said knowing full well he probably didn't hear him. Mildly disappointed that the only person he was really getting to know got up and left he turned back to Vivian's question. "I'm just kinda taking general classes you know, I haven't picked a permanent major. My parents want me to take over their oil surveying business, but I.. I.. don't really know about that. The fields are dangerous back in Allegheny, thats where I am from, part of me thinks that may have been my parent's reasoning to send me abroad, you know, get an education and then hopefully come back with the tools needed to make good decisions, stuff like that." Declan turned for a moment to Centralia, "Hey Centralia, nice to see you again!" "Oh yeah one more thing, where did you say you were from Vivian? Are you from FPS?" |

Chagrined, May looked at the spattered noodles and vegetables that had flown from her fork onto the middle of the table as Aristes knocked her when he got up, biting back a sarcastic comment. He'd already gone. No point in saying anything but it was exasperating. That made the second time someone had bumped into her here in the cafeteria and not so much as an apology. At least she was aware of how clumsy she could be at times. As unobtrusively as possible, she wiped up the mess, leaving it wrapped in a paper napkin on the corner of her tray, and only then took a closer look at the newcomers. Okë and Centralia. Those were their names. She thought she'd seen them outside having a picnic earlier. Come to think of it, Aristes had been with them too. "Hi there. I'm May ... from Kangarawa." |

Okë did not respond to Sonny's friendly greeting and offering of a handshake as had been anticipated. Instead of extending a paw to return the gesture he instead jerked back slightly in an instinctive move of self defense. The unsure but on the whole cheery and eager expression which he had been wearing when he had first showed up at the table disappeared, replaced by one of suspicion. Just as he began to articulate some kind of verbal response, the standoff was interrupted by Centralia's entrance. It was unexpected, but welcomed. Not just because he had gotten along well with Centralia so far, but because it also gave him a chance to disengage from Sonny and slip into an empty chair. Comfort and smile returning, he began to eat, a full mouth being the perfect excuse to be able to just listen and not say anything else for the moment, trying to take stock of the names of those he was unfamiliar with. |

"May, that is a beautiful name!" Centralia responded kindly as she took over Aristes's seat and looked to Sonny who was graciously offering to buy them dinner. "Thank you for the offer Sonny. If it is not a problem, I do very much love the plain pizza." Vivian looked up to Centralia who was ordering and then to Declan meeting his eyes as conversations began to take place around the table. Her eyes seemed to sparkle, the action of almost a wink at him, as that knowing smile still played across her face. To Declan it seemed to say 'lively bunch of people here' especially as her eyes seemed to turn towards the man who had strode off in hurry. "It is funny that you mention it. I too am from Allegheny," Vivian responded as she brought her hand towards her chest, pointing to herself, the glimmer of a charm bracelet dangling around her wrist caught in the action. "Urban life for me. I have only heard stories about the oil fields. I am surprised to see you here though. I thought country boys did not get out much," she offered with a slight wink, playful, flirtatious, harmless in appearance. "May, Okë, what brings you here to Shiro?" |

It took a few seconds for Okë to respond to the question. Vivian had caught him unawares in the middle of a bite with her question, and he knew better than to try and speak through a mouthful of hamburger mush. True, he could have simply let May answer first, but he actually felt like talking just because, rather than out of social obligation. He was quickly beginning to get into the flow of things in his new home and was as usual encouraged by the amicable atmosphere. He swallowed as soon as he could and answered. "Well, I came here for studying," he said at first, before realizing that such an obvious answer was doubtlessly unsatisfactory. So he elaborated after some hesitation. "I study journalism and try to improve my skills in English." Feeling as if he were on a roll, he went right on to say more than was absolutely necessary. "I don't speak it very well and want to work abroad." |

Iliyana listened to the group as they comfortably and effortlessly conversed with one another. While she didn’t quite know if she was welcomed by all of those there, the more people who joined their group, the friendlier the atmosphere seemed to get. Initially she felt the three humans were somewhat standoffish toward her, save the one who identified himself as Woodward, to which she just gave him a nod and decided to focus on her pizza, how it looked almost like the surface of a volcanic moon rather than an edible delicacy. She would occasionally stab it with her fork, but she clearly wasn’t all that interested in it. That, and the bag of milk… bag of milk? Oh well. It probably tasted about the same regardless of what form it was in. Still, the conversation gravitated toward majors as Vivian joined the mix. But Aristes’s tone deterred her from announcing her major – communication with a minor in humanities. It just didn’t seem like a cool major. Political science: she had seen a lot of those in her nation, and they moved stuff around. Engineering: likewise, but she remembered engineers often were cold and seemed to love their numbers more than the presence of another. Two undecideds were next. How could they be undecided? In her nation, you pretty much knew where you’d be once you entered high school, or at least that was how the old regime ran things, something she actually liked from those times. Her tenseness was dropped once Aristes left. There was just something odd about him, like he kind of had the same aura about him that Mr. Bortniansky seemed to hold… only he could talk and he seemed more… negative. How could he be so negative? Maybe he just didn’t like school. The stench of hard pizza continued to fill her nose. She checked her watch. Not too long before she needed to pray. More people came. A very friendly woman came and greeted another. And she apparently liked the pizza here. At least her English was getting a jog. When Okë explained his major in journalism and that his English skills were lacking, Iliyana realized she had to say something, anything. “You can have my pizza if you want!” she gasped as soon as the words left her mouth. “What I meant to say is you can… but… I’m sorry. Let me start over again. I’m Iliyana, it’s nice to meet you... Okë, Centralia, Vi-um Vivian, Declan… Woodward…” her voice trailed off as soon as she noticed she was rambling. Her ears moved back. |

Shiro Academy Housing carefully prepared for fall move-in. Professional staff spent a month getting the dormitories ready for students. Student staff came back from summer break two weeks early to decorate and organize. The day prior to move-in, everyone felt ready, even confident. The move-in procedure naturally collapsed within half an hour. Dorms ran out of documents, lines ceased to hold any form, elevators broke down, doors jammed open (or shut). Wachim Dormitory fared better than most, facing no actual building problems, but every staff member ended out working 12-16 hours on day one. Matthew Terrus felt exhausted the next day as a result, even more so because he faced a 9AM class. He got up at seven, six hours after he went to bed, then showered before he stumbled his way to the fifth floor kitchen. Reaching up, he opened up one of the cabinets, only to curse. Apparently, amidst the scramble to prepare the dorms, no one stocked the fifth floor kitchen for breakfast. Ten minutes later, he realized that none of the Wachin kitchens were stocked for the first meal of the day, despite having been stocked for dinner. And so, half an hour later, he returned to the building from Housing Administration, pushing a cart filled with various cereals, some dry breakfast foods and a few breakfast drinks. Upon his return, Matt stocked each floor kitchen, then lastly returned to the fifth floor. He hoped no one had missed the chance to eat. Throwing the remaining food on the counter along the side of the room, he grabbed some cereal, then sat down at one of the several tables to eat. |

Okë went to sleep earlier than he usually did the evening of his arrival, still under the influence of jetlag from his long journey. So it naturally followed that he when he got out of bed the following morning it was also earlier than he usually did. His waking was not a momentary event though. It was a protracted happening, and for a period of time he was caught between his dreams and reality, not entirely remembering where he was for a few minutes. After a few minutes of resolutely staying curled up on the mattress, glued to where he was by the comfort of it, hunger and plain old boredom managed to win out. With no other way available in which to satisfy these needs, Okë rolled out of bed, put on his glasses and dressed plainly in shorts and a t-shirt, and finally stumbled out the of the room and down the corridor in the direction he remembered the kitchenette being. Which, as the dead end he found instead clearly illustrated, was wrong. He was forced to do an about face and walk down the entire length of the corridor. When he arrived to find that Matt was already present in the room, he had to take a second to suppress an automatic feeling that he was somehow intruding. The thought was ridiculous, he told himself, it was a public space after all, even if it was an unfamiliar one. And it was Matt, he'd been just as friendly as anyone else. The self reassurance in fact worked, and he confidently acted first by cheerfully greeting Matt. At least, he tried to, but half-way through his "good morning" he was interrupted by an unanticipated yawn. Undeterred by the slip up. "I'm sorry, I was saying good morning," he said without a second interrupting yawn. He grinned ingratiatingly. A thought that had been filed away the previous day suddenly occurred to him. "Oh, I got no chance to thank you yesterday, so thank you." A brief and slightly awkward silence. "Um, is there no one else here?" |

Kieran Yivereru's alarm clock rung. He quickly turned it and crawled out of bed. He took a shower, brushed his teeth, and got dressed. His roommate, Alvus Fedorov, didn't have to go to class until later in the afternoon, but Kieran set his alarm to go off at the same time as Alvus' alarm clock. The vulpine was wearing blue jeans, tennis shoes, and a long sleeved polo shirt. He grabbed his art supplies and backpack, and headed down to the fifth floor kitchens where he noticed Matt and a large lupine. "Hi Matt. Hello," he told them both. He tried to say goodmorning, but what came out of his muzzle was a loud yawn. "Sorry, I was trying to say goodmorning. I had a busy night. I was wondering, what's for breakfast?" |

"Oh, it's okay then," replied Okë to Matt's terse but informative summation of what food was available for breakfast. He was smiling cheerily, but behind it his mind he was trying to workout just what the items that he been listed in English really were. His gastronomical vocabulary evidently suffered from some severe deficiencies. The smell of Matt's coffee wasn't helping the situation. It was strong, almost strong enough to completely overwhelm his mental faculties. So it was something of a relief Kieran made a selection. Without anywhere else to start, he followed his lead and took a muffin, which, when a brief olfactory investigation didn't raise any obvious alarms, he then took a bite out of and began to chew slowly. It was sweeter than what he'd been anticipating, but still good. He swallowed, and thought about speaking up before realizing he wasn't quite sure what to say. He ended up forcing an awkward question. "Art? So are you an artist?" |

Kieran smiled and nodded. "Yep. You could say that art is in my blood. Both my parents are artists." He then remembered he didn't know the lupine's name. "Oh sorry, where are my manners." He held out his hand. "I'm Kieran Yivereru, nice to meet you." |

"Oh, I'm sorry," replied Okë, upset that he had rudely forgotten to properly introduce upon first meeting Kieran. Somehow he managed to completely overlook the fact that he was clearly quite cheery and in no way offended. "Omakta Okë," he introduced himself stiffly and then automatically began to bow before he remembered that this wasn't the custom where he was. The humor of his innocent mistake was enough to let him recover his wits. "I'm sorry," he apologized again, but with far less consternation in his voice, and shook Kieran's hand. |

Thinking that he was supposed to bow too, Kieran bowed as well, but then Okë said "sorry." After shaking the lupine's hand, he then started rubbing the back of his neck, and doing his best not to put his tail between his legs, he said, "It's okay. I've always wanted to know how people in other cultures greeted each other. So, um...what are you studying here?" |
