Ora stood before Concordance Cybernetics and Biomedical awaiting Dr. Leslie Houseman. The building was obscured and hidden discretely in this city and it would have been overlooked if Ora had not followed the specific coordinates she was given.

Leslie exited the building at the sight of her, his smile being from ear to ear. "A pleasure to finally meet you. Please come inside!"

Following the man inside, the lights were pleasantly dimmed for comfort, not that she cared. Her kind was unaffected by the artificial creation of light, but she knew that for a human, it would be more appealing. And now, for the first time since her assimilation she had to begin to try to think alike a human again.

"I have to admit," Leslie began, his excitement peaking as the approached a containment area of the facility, "that when you made this request, I was a bit skeptic. But seeing as you upheld your end of the bargain, I was mistaken for my initial thoughts and must apologize. As such, I believe you will be satisfied with our deal. This is my life's work. I doubt I can ever accomplish something as magnificent. It was nearly impossible, but....oh to hell with it, let me just show you."

Motioning to his assistants, the unveiling occurred and standing before them was a woman dressed in casual clothing, her head held high with closed eyes.

"When you are ready," Leslie turned to Ora, ready to display the features he had spent a painstaking amount of time and energy into perfecting.

"Ready," Ora responded, watching the woman.

"Activate TCOM9."

As the woman came to life, her eyes blinking open, she began to move and test her flexibility as preprogrammed. Her voice came out, a seductive and provocative sound in comparison to the mechanized voices of their predecessors.

"All systems functioning. Vivian Stohl in operation," the woman answered as she looked up, meeting her creators for the first time.

Moving forward Ora studied the new line. "Does it experience pain and emotions?"

"Not yet, but we are improving the design as we speak."

"It will work for now. Is it fully operation for the field?" Ora asked as she held out the arm of the woman.

"Yes, everything is just as you requested."

"Proceed with the production. I would like one unit formatted to these specifications. Keep me posted on advancements in the design. I will see if we can integrate them into these models."

"It has been my pleasure working with you. I was not aware The Pax were so generous. You have my word. I will notify you as soon as the unit is complete. In the mean time, take TCOM9 with you. She is fully operational."

Ora seemed to nod but the mechanical movement did not carry with it the weight it did with a human. He could see why they were interested in upgrading the design and as he watched Ora walk away with Vivian he felt confident that in working together they could accomplish anything.

Leslie Houseman sat in his expansive office overlooking the skyline of Drexel, the morning sun had yet to come up but the light radiating off the massive city was enough to light his office without a need for a lamp or other lighting device. He drank tea while he waited for the person he was meeting, the paper in front of him, the first page detailing the news of his company's purchase of Haskell-Grimes. The funding the Packilvanian gave him enough for him to purchase an entire corporation and still have some left over.

The door to his personal elevator opened and an elderly man in a wheel chair wheeled himself into the office. "Darryl Haskell! How nice to see you," Houseman exclaimed.

"Morning Houseman, I see they haven't wasted any time putting up the new signs out in all the offices and labs we have."

"Just making it official, Concordance Haskell-Grimes, I like the sounds of it. To bad Cheryl Grimes is not here to see this," Houseman said as he stood up, taking one last sip of his tea.

"I don't know if she would be happy about this, but business is business, there is no room for emotion. Now let's get to the point, Houseman. What is it you are so excited to show me?" Darryl said getting a little anxious.

"The future, Dr. Haskell. What I am going to show you is the future of our company, the future of medicine, and our people as a whole," Houseman said in a mysterious tone.

Haskell raised his eyebrow as they both got into the elevator. A device near the control panel scanned Houseman's eye and a chime rung out. "Houseman, Leslie R. verification accepted."

"We will be going to my top secret lab, only my personal team and myself come down here. Everything you see must be kept quiet, Doctor, I cannot stress that enough." Haskell nodded and continued staring at the gray stainless steel of the elevator. The doors opened revealing an expansive lab, it's walls and structures a blinding white. A few scientists said hello as Houseman left the elevator with Haskell following.

"How is she doing?" He asked to a scientist passing by.

"All systems green sir, she's ready for use." The scientist said before walking off.

They walked through another self opening door and a woman sat before them going through basic dexterity tests with a few researchers. "Thats enough testing for now," Houseman announced to the room. The researchers and technicians left in a hurry leaving Houseman and Haskell alone with the woman.

"This is what you wanted to show me? Just looks like a plain old woman to me, Houseman," Haskell said grumpily.

Houseman ignored him as he approached the woman. "Hello, Doctor Houseman, it's nice to see you again. Have you had a good morning so far?" The woman asked in a chipper mood.

Dr. Houseman smiled, "I am fine Joy, I'd like you to meet a friend of mine, Joy this is Dr. Darryl Haskell. Dr. Haskell this is Joy."

"Hello Dr. Haskell, how are you?" She said smiling."

Haskell did not respond to the woman. "What is this Houseman, some sort of joke?"

"NO!" Houseman yelled, "She is the future, a synthetic Human, a culmination of all of my research, she represents our immortality."

"Aww, thanks Dr. Houseman, you are too kind." Joy replied.

"She can simulate emotions, eat food, she can do everything we do only she is stronger, faster, smarter and more agile than we can ever be."

"I don't believe it Houseman, you are bullshitting me."

"Houseman smiled, that's OK, I own everything you have now. Joy, kill Dr. Haskell."

"More than happy to sir!" Joy responded. In a blinding dash of speed Joy thrust her hand through Haskell's chest, Haskell's eyes flashed in surprise as he looked down at the synthetic woman's arm deep inside his chest. She pulled out, blood flowing out of the hole where is heart used to be, he slumped over dead in his wheelchair.

"Perfect, thank you Joy you have done well," Houseman praised.

"Thank you sir, it was my pleasure," Joy responded, the blood dripping off her arm.

The assimilation process had been more difficult, the intricacies of these newer models more complex and delicate, requiring much closer attention to the finer details than their predecessors, but as Vivian stood before Ora as one of her own, she could not resist imaging their future. The Hive could advance much further than it had ever dreamed with this new technology and the protection it could bring their nation was almost unfathomable. They could almost be one of them.

It was with this knowledge that Ora sent Vivian off. If she could experience sadness and hope, she might have as she watched this young woman carry with it the hope of their empire as she departed.

Vivian Stohl, the first of the new production line. She would have to work for now despite the flaws in her design. If word of this line got out, it may be too late to accomplish their goals and as such, pushing to send Vivian out was the best decision they could make at this moment. So while Ora watched her plan move into motion, she turned back to her own plans, confident that Vivian would succeed far enough to get them closer.

According to Kabalah, there are four worlds and our world is the last world: the world of action (Assiyah). Angels exist in the worlds above as a 'task' of God. They are an extension of God to produce effects in this world. After an angel has completed its task, it ceases to exist. The angel is in effect the task.

Joy clapped her hands with excitement as she stood with Leslie, waiting for the unfolding of their latest project. Ever since the creation of Vivian, the models were becoming easier for Leslie. Having spent most of his time and funding developing her, each model was significantly easier with the exception of the minor tweaking that needed to be done to perfect the new designs. The synthetic emotional capacity in robotics was proving to be quite the challenge in mastering to which Leslie was reminded of again as Joy eagerly stood beside him beaming with enthusiasm, just as she beamed with enthusiasm when her arm was accidentally mutilated in a malfunction design of their latest production.

"Well Joy.....are you are ready?" he asked, already knowing Joy was far too eager to see a brother born.

"Activate TCOM 11, Code name Raphael."

As the man sat up from the table, blinking to life, his eyes focusing on all around him, he seemed for a moment stunned to be awake and alive, if one could call his existence life. As programmed though, he found his body moving through a series of tasks and it was in response that his face twisted into a look of concern as if his mind and body were somehow disconnected. Looking towards his arm as it stretched out before him and each finger touched his thumb, he completed the basic dexterity tests before standing, a hint of sadness in his eyes.

His voice deep, a heavenly blend of harmony and melody in unison, "Basic dexterity functioning."

After completion of the tests, he stood before Joy and Leslie and bent at his knees, the look of sadness that this body seemed to respond outside of his control playing across his face while he jumped up and magnificent mechanical wings arced out behind him as he reached for the heavens. He seemed to hover for a moment before touching down softly and bending at the knees, bringing his arm to his chest and bowing his head in servitude.

"TCOM 11, the Arlenian model, Raphael, fully functional," his voice spoke as he hung his head.

Joy on the other hand smiled and walked up to Raphael, touching the mechanical wings and extended them. "They are fantastic! Look at how beautiful they turned out!" Her own excitement was not even broken as she noticed the synthetic blood stain still on his wings from when they had initially cut her arm off. "He needs his wings cleaned though! You missed a spot," she pointed to the red stained substance that acted as a lubricant while masking as blood to a human. As she walked around the back her smiled seemed to grow as the drops of synthetic blood collected on the ground around Raphael, his body still bent in servitude even as his back bled. "He is bleeding. It is fantastic. Look at how well he bleeds!" Joy exclaimed as she ran her finger through the synthetic substance on his back.

Walking around to examine, Leslie had indeed noticed the fault in this design immediately. The calibration of the wings exiting the body were off enough to tear through the skin and cause trauma to the synthetic human portion of his body. Bending down, he looked at Raphael's face which betrayed no experience of pain but rather sadness.

"Come, up you go," he spoke, assisting Raphael to his feet although this machine clearly did not need assistance in standing. He could not ascertain whether or not these machines could experience anything resembling pain, but the expression in Raphael's face almost broke his heart and his own face met Raphael's with a sense of pain as if his child were injured and he felt the need to protect it from further injury. "You can retract your wings, we will work on fixing this," he spoke, looking down the collecting puddle of synthetic blood.

"But Leslie, I want to see him fly!" Joy smiled happily.

"Not now. We need to repair him. Come," he issued Raphael back to the table, having the Arlenian retract his wings and lay on his stomach as he began to examine the damage done to the underlying tissues. "Send for a team Joy, they will need to examine him more thoroughly, see if this is something we can repair easily," he requested as he sat by Raphael, reluctantly ordering his creation to power down.

It had been three weeks since the repairs to Raphael, Leslie noted as he looked up to the mechanical wings spread out along the wall, trophied in his office, Raphael's name etched into the arch along with his own name. Lifting himself from his calculations, he looked to those wings, the pinnacle of what they were attempting to create here. With advancements in the design, he could recreate humanity.....he could bring humanity into a new future, a future where man's greatest dreams could become a reality.

Their new alliances were bringing them closer and closer to attaining a level of humanity previously unfathomable. The Mahanionians brought with them their steel monoliths. With the help of that nation, they could finally touch the heavens. Pack brought with them the power of cybernetics, the complexity of robotics. With their combined technologies, they could know no bounds. The mythical impossibilities of their ancestors seemed so much more attainable and the wings before him represented the possibility of the future.

"To think....they said Icarus would never touch the sun," he laughed to himself at the wings before him. With each step he was taking, they were moving closer and closer to the pinnacle of human existence.

"Dr. Houseman," a voice interrupted as one of the assistants slipped into his office, "we need your assistance with the latest model."

"I will be there a moment," Leslie spoke as he closed his notebook and looked up to the wings one last time, "you are my finest creation," he spoke seemingly to the wings, but his mind looked back to the sad face of Raphael during his initial awakening. He could not ask him to fly just yet....not after the miscalibration of wings. Despite knowing they could not experience pain, he could not handle the expression on Raphael's face, it was so pained, so saddened, so hurt as he bent in servitude awaiting the next command. They were machines to many, machines to others, a machine even to him.....but still, he could feel the supple softness of Vivian's skin, could be warmed by Joy's laughter, could feel pain for Raphael's injuries. They were only machines, he fought to remind himself as he walked out of the office, the door closing and locking behind him as he walked away.

Meanwhile, Joy laughed as she wrapped her arm around Raphael's and pulled him towards the door, her smile and laughter radiating while she urged him forward.

"I really do not think we should leave. Dr. Houseman does not approve of anyone leaving the lab. I imagine by their thinking that would include us as well, particularly us. It would be too risky to have us outside of the lab. What do we do if something malfunctions and he is not around to fix it?" Raphael reminded Joy, acting as the voice of reason in this recent scheme.

"You are marvelously adorable Raph! Now come quickly, the alarms are going to trigger!" she insisted as she used her force to pull him into a run quickly down the corridors.

"Security breech. Section 3. Security breech." The alert sounded and as Joy ran faster pulling Raphael with her they burst through an exit before the lab went into lockdown. No human could achieve that, she knew, but still she laughed in exhilaration as she stood outside of the lab, the night sky looming above, the city lights dazzling around them.

"We should not have left," Raphael looked disappointed, the sadness playing across his face once again, an almost permanent reminder that this Arlenian was not in control of his own mechanical body and felt remorse each moment that he followed the commands of those authorized to command his mechanical body.

"It is wonderful out here Raphael! Look at all these lights! To think we were kept from such beauty for so long! Look how high that building is," she pointed to monoliths stretching towards the skies, "I bet you could touch the top of it!"

"If you took the stairs or climbed the side, I bet you could as well," Raphael responded, again pulled along the streets by Joy who seemed enthralled with the life around her, beaming and smiling to the strangers she met on the street as they walked, appearing more like a young couple in love than the mechanical beings they were.

Stopping before a water fountain, Joy dipped her hand into it, playing with the ripples and experiencing for the first time this life outside of the highly controlled environment of the lab. Out here they could not predict what would happen, could not control the minutest detail. Out here, they could be human.

"Raph," she spoke as she held tightly onto his arm, hugging him not out of affection but to prevent him from turning back towards the lab, "don't you love it here!?"

"Joy.....," Raphael responded as he sat on the fountains edge and dipped his own hand into the water besides Joy, trying to experience the joy she was having at this world, "do you ever wonder what it is like to be them?"

"We were created to be them! Isn't it wonderful?" she laughed, glad to see him warm up slightly, trying to learn instead of retreat back to the safety of the lab.

Taking his hand now, she held him close, still assuming he may run but giving him more freedom as she moved him along the streets, thrilled at the night life that existed at all times of this city. Even as the hours passed during their exploration, they never fatigued or stopped, until they came to a shady slum of the city and the sound of gunshots stopped them in their exploration.

Cursing ensued and Joy moved to turn towards the sound before a man grabbed her from behind, prying her from Raphael, "well pretty lady," his menacing voice caught in her ear, "what are you doing out so late? Came to play?" The man looked at her partner, judging how easily he could take the weak looking man down before holding a gun to him.

Raphael looked to the stranger, sadness in his face, "Please, do not attempt to hurt her," he begged, pleading for the man's life.

But the criminal heard only the man's pleas for his girlfriend's life and took a closer aim before firing three shots into the chest of this pretty woman's lover. He could not deal with this man, didn't have the time to for his words or his attempts to stop him.

Pulling Joy the man buried his face into her neck, voraciously smelling her in his eager anticipation. Even as his friends joined him, he could barely control his lusts as he pulled at her top. Had he and his friends been thinking and not controlled by their desires, they may have thought to question why Joy did not even protest as or cry out as her lover was killed before her eyes. They may have noticed that she was still smiling even as they attempted to rip her clothing off, and they may have heard Raphael get back onto his feet unhindered by the bullets.

It was not until Raphael's pleas for their lives broke out that anyone thought to look at the man before Joy plunged her hand first through the attempted raptist's heart, ripping it out of his chest before spinning around and snapping the neck of his closest friend. Each move was done with grace and elegance, each twist of her body bringing the death of another, before she dropped the final man, the smile plastered on her face.....much akin to that of personal triumph with each and every death.

Raphael dropped to his knees as he watched the dying man take his last breath, "I warned them," he spoke sadly, trying to make sense of what had just happened, "why didn't they listen?"

Joy just smiled, the blood dripping down her arm again, "they died so well! Did you see how quickly he died when I snapped his neck!? His body just fell. It was wonderful Raph!"

"We should return back to the lab now," remorse filled his voice as he bowed his head before the pile of bodies.

"Okay!" Joy beamed, "but not before we watch the sunrise!"

For three hours they sat in the darkness, silence between them. Joy returned to clutching Raphael's arm again to keep him beside her while they looked out the rising sun, blurred by the smog of the city. Still, Joy seemed enthusiastic about the beauty of everything around them.

Walking back in silence, Raphael noticed how differently the city seemed to be, everyone in a rush to get to some place. Everyone so busy and self-absorbed they did not notice the torn clothing of Joy nor the dried blood still covering her arm. He was designed to be them, but as he walked the streets with them, he could not understand how they did not see what was right before them, many plowing into him on their travels.

It was at that time that he saw no one noticed the young lost boy who had wondered out into the street nor the driver of the car who was too busy engaged in looking at her handheld device than the road. Ripping his arm free of Joy, he pushed past a few of the people, throwing them onto the ground before leaping out onto the road. He grasped the boy in his arms just before the car collided into him.

"Hold on," he spoke, bracing the boy as his body was thrown onto the ground and he skid with the momentum several feet, protecting the boy.

The car stopped, the driver getting out, mortified that she hit someone. It was Joy who seemed to stroll out from the crowd that stopped to gawk to walk towards the young boy who stood up shaking out of fear but otherwise fine. "Raph! That was fantastic! You stopped a car!" she beamed in excitement, thrilled to see the collision happen before her eyes.

"Help me up please," he spoke, reaching his arm up from the ground and as she pulled him onto his feet, he looked down at the torn skin, covered with the synthetic blood that lined their bodies. Triggered by an uncontrolled response, Raphael found his voice speaking on its own "system malfunction right leg."

Joy seemed to understand and slipped herself to act as a crutch for Raphael, "You should have died!" she beamed with enthusiasm as she hoisted him up more and helped him walk back, ignoring the cries of the driver, the dent from the impact, and the prying eyes of the crowd.

It was several blocks away and around the corner from the lab that Joy was stopped by a tugging at her clothing, "You saved me," the voice spoke.

"You ought not wander onto streets," Raphael responded, hanging his head in a mechanical struggle.

"Are you alive?"

"He thinks we are not living!" Joy laughed, pulling Raphael along as another system shut down and he became more useless.

"You broke a car," the boy protested as he continued to follow them. "You must be an alien or a robot!"

"Aliens!" Joy smiled.

"Are you a robot? You talk funny sometimes.....like now," he looked to Raphael who had indeed confirmed another system failure.

"Raph, we get to kill him! He knows far too much!" Joy responded with eager anticipation, easing Raphael to the ground before turning towards the boy.

"NO!" Raphael protested, his large mechanical wing coming between Joy and the boy. "We have seen too much death today."

"Raphael, power down," the order came from around the corner, the voice regretting uttering those words but knowing it needed to be done. Without a protest, Raphael's wing became lifeless, his head dropped, and his body slumped to the pavement as the mechanical systems shut down.

Leslie stood before them, looking to Joy and the young boy, a dilemma before him. Normally he would feel the need to eliminate anyone who threatened exposure of this operation, but it was just a child. A child who seemed less afraid and more fascinated by the mechanical wing that acted as a shield than the threat of death standing before him. He saw in that boy himself and he could not bring himself to give the order.

"Stand down Joy," he sighed heavily, "Take Raphael back to the lab."

"Yes sir!" she beamed as she bent down and hoisted Raphael onto her shoulders, carrying him back and leaving Leslie with the boy.

"Follow me," he spoke, taking the young boy's hand. It was not what he expected, not what he had planned for, but it was now his future.

The lab had been a mess after the triggered security lock-down and the subsequent return of the two machines, the PMC's (private military contractor) he had hired to protect his skyscraper now doubled for security measures, if any spy had caught sight of the machines outside returning to his head quarters he would surely have every mercenary in Allegheny on his ass. His science team beared the brunt of his angry assault. Both Joy and Raphael had been shut down for the remainder of the day as they worked to repair the damage. The skin on Joy's arm had been ripped by shattered bone and as he repaired her he dared not think who or how many she killed. The damage on Joy was light, but on Raphael it was most severe.

"Three bullet wounds to the trunk region and damaged legs from an apparent run in with a car. This is such a fucking disaster I don't even know where to begin. I paid to have this tower a fucking fortress, dug deep down into the earth to build this underground lab and my creations break through like none of it was there. If I wasn't so impressed with their abilities you may all be dead for your failures. Concordance owns your life. Remember that when we being repair work on the Mark 11, thats almost a ten billion Marks in development and prototyping for the Arlenian model alone. Team, let's remember the climate out there, industrial and corporate espionage is the hallmark of this city. If this got out we may be all dead and our work could be spread to several different companies.. THEN.. what would we be remembered for? Our foolishness. Act like you want to bring about the future and not like a junior research at the University of Drexel. On top of all this, I have some vagrant kid walking around my lab that I don't know what to do with."

The 'operation' itself took several hours as new parts were put in and synthetic skin grown to fit the damaged areas, Raphael was whole again. Both models were reactivated and sat in across from Leslie in a small lounge area. Joy beamed at being allowed to be reactivated and Raphael sat there a look of indifference on his face.

"Hi Doctor Houseman." Joy spit out in quick succession, her usual hyperness causing her to speak quickly.

Raphael nodded at Houseman's presence.

"Today was a disaster, I gave you express orders not to leave the lab and you failed me," He felt like he was scolding children when in fact he was scolding killing machines fully capable of ripping him limb from limb, "I've had to program fail-safes into you for the time being, If you attempt to access the security level six door to the surface you will shutdown immediately. I am sorry to have had to do this, I don't like shutting you down at all. You two and your sister Vivian are my greatest creations, you are the key to furthering the human race. With the research gained from this project man and machine will merge to become one, a race of technologically augmented supermen without the hive mind of the Pax. That is what we are on the cusp of achieving with this project. To lose you, to be discovered would mean the end for all of us."

Leslie motioned for them to follow him, leading them to a room full of different items. "Even though you are machines with minds much more infinite than my own, you are still only children. I would love nothing more to take you to experience what little this world has to offer us, but I cannot do that. To satiate your desire to learn I have gathered a plethora of material about this world for you to dive into and learn."

Joy jumped up and down a few times at the opportunity to learn. "Oh this is so exciting! Thanks Doctor Houseman!" As she celebrated the little boy entered the room. Joy stopped, the smile on her face lessened to a degree as she approached him. She kneeled down to his level a look of curiosity replacing the smile. "You are the little human we saw outside! I've never seen a little human before. How wonderful," she said in amazement. "What is your name?!" She asked the boy.

"My name is James. Do you wanna be friends?" He asked timidly.

Joy's eyes grew with happiness, "Yea! I will be your friend we can do all sorts of stuff. Doctor Houseman gave us stuff to learn. We can learn together!" Joy turned to Leslie with a pleading look. "Can we keep him please!!!"

Houseman waved his hands, "For the time being, yes. I haven't decided what to do with him," He said and then left, the automatic sliding door closing behind him.

"Aww, this is going to be so cool," Joy said, "I am glad I didn't kill you! Right Raph?"

Raphael shook his head as he began to look over the materials and sighed.

He watched Joy and James for a moment before the need to know overtook him. Slipping out of the room unnoticed, Raphael found Leslie sitting at a table, rubbing his head to fight back the frustration.

"Doctor," Raphael bowed his head in servitude for a moment, "what happens to me when you shut me down?"

It was at this moment that Dr. Houseman had wondered what he had really created here, his programming was plain and simple to him but what it amounted to was something much more different. Were they truly feeling these emotions? Or was this some facet of his design showing through, simply a unintentional facade. There was no doubt that if he were to be brought before a court that they would most likely determine him to be self aware. These machines as physically non-human as they were could at times be more human then himself. If he had simply programmed his artificial intelligence without the over-riding commands and subroutines the Pax demanded of these infiltrators, then they simply would have gone on to live like a normal human.

"I don't know Raphael, I don't know. Technically you sleep. But.. do you dream? I wonder."

"I am afraid I do not know," Raphael looked perplexed, unsure of what the phenomenon of dreaming was like. He seemed to grow quiet for a moment, to which Leslie assumed he was contemplating an answer to the question.

However, when Raphael did not answer for a few moments, he went to stand up, assuming that glimmer of personality he saw had gone away and Raphael had fallen back to a programmed state. It came with a natural surprise when Raphael shook his head to indicate no that he realized the machine was searching his advanced mind for what resembled the best answer.

"Doctor they said I should have died when I was hit by a car. Your records list me as being a synthetic human. If I am not living, can I die? If I can die, what is death like? I cannot find a definitive answer to that question Doctor. I wish to know."

Leslie was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with the questioning. "Look, it's time for you to go back in there and be with Joy. Our benefactors are expecting you to be in tip top shape when they arrive for demonstration. Now go and follow my rules, thats an order."

As Raphael left he sighed in relief not having to answer such loaded questions. The AI was becoming much more sophisticated. The scientist in him was happy to see his experimental technology working so well, but the business man in him felt that the Hive would not approve of such inquisitive minds. Would he have to curtail their learning abilities? He wasn't sure and decided it needed further study.

The pile of books grew before him as Raphael engaged himself in his studies, Joy and James taking their time with each book, laughing about it and discussing it among each other. Still the question played on his mind, was he alive?

Standing up, he walked around the room and crouched before Joy and James who were laughing with the story they were reading. "Why are we learning about this world if we are not meant to live in it?" he asked Joy, the sadness at their existence playing across his face again. "I can tell you where every city is, what plant that is, what animals exist here, but what does any of that mean if we will never get to see the world?"

"Isn't it wonderful what exists!? Would you like to explore again!?" Joy bounced up, knocking Raphael into a sitting position as she did.

"Joy, you know we cannot leave. The Doctor was very disappointed with us," Raphael responded.

"We can always pretend," James said, "we can play!"

"Play?" the simultaneous question came from Joy and Raphael as they looked at this small human.

"Sure, you can be the mom and you can be the dad and I'll be your kid! You go to work in an Allegheny factory dad and mom stays home and teaches me to read! And every night when you get home dad you tell me stories about something you saw!"

"I do not understand," Raphael looked to the small boy, "You are not our child."

"It's pretend. You make it up," James huffed.

"I think....I get it!" Joy exclaimed. "Here....stand up," she pulled Raphael onto his feet and moved him to another corner of the room. "Now you wait here and in ten minutes come here and tell us a story about something you might see in Allegheny."

Complying with the order, Raphael waited precisely ten minutes before walking back towards Joy and James who sat with their books talking and laughing just as they had all afternoon. Without moving, Raphael repeated a story he had read from the newspaper while Joy and James looked up at him and resisted the urge to laugh. With a mind so complex and inquisitive as his, he struggled to grasp the most basic of concepts.

"How about we try something else?" Joy chuckled as she grabbed Raphael arm and pulled him towards the door, looking out first to see that the Doctor was not around before she motioned for James to follow. Taking him up had been difficult and a few times he nearly resisted her until she ordered him to follow. It was the line of security breech that she stopped and smiled before pushing Raphael past it, watching as he stood for a moment before his systems powered down and he collapsed to the ground.

"Oh my!" she laughed as she looked to James, "he was telling the truth! Quick pull him over here."

Grabbing Raphael, she quickly hoisted him up and ran with James back to the room before placing him on the ground. "I want to see his wings! I want to see how they work!"

As she examined his back though and found no way to engage them externally she realized that only Leslie and Raphael could control them and she fell disappointed at she looked at his back that this toy she could not play with. The sound of rushing footsteps came closer though and she quickly grabbed a blanket and threw it over Raphael before grabbing Jame's arm and pulling him to a book before Leslie stormed into the room with a look of impatience on his face.

"Hey Doctor!" she chimed.

"There was a security breech."

"But we are right here, as you can see," Joy smiled again holding the book up to show him that she had been reading.

"Where is he?"

"Sleeping Doctor! He sleeps so wonderfully!" she pointed to Raphael's powered down body tucked beneath the blanket.

Houseman shook his head, the obvious emotional malfunction could no longer be overlooked, the happiness had bordered on the child like. "Joy if you do not stop this I will have to modify your programming, it's something I don't want to do, it would wipe your personality and we would have to restart on you."

Joy's curiosity once again was at Raphael's expense. This model seemed to naive, falling for her simple tricks. "Reactivate TCOM 11." Raphael stood back up visibly upset from being deactivated unwillingly.

"Joy I set up that perimeter so that you will not leave this place before you are ready. There is no telling what the sudden deactivation could do to poor Raphael. He could have been damaged! Would you want your brother to get hurt?"

"No!" Joy said smiling, "It was James! I swear."

Houseman laughed, the machine was lying to him albeit it was a very bad lie.

"Don't do it again," Houseman said leaving the room.

Joy looked back to James with a look of innocence, "What, you did it. Jeez."

"Nuh uh. You did!"

Raphael ignored the two's arguing once again contemplating deactivation.

Walking back to the lab he was created in, Raphael looked around at the latest creation they were working on. It was already complete with the exception of minor details and adjustments. Looking down at the man before him, he reached out and touched its hand. There was no warm in its hands yet, nothing to make it appear human, and yet, somehow they became human enough when activated.

"Hello my brother," Raphael spoke as he looked at newest creation. "You will be awake shortly. I do not know if you can....what did the doctor say? Dream. If you can dream, I hope your dreams are pleasant. I look forward to meeting you."

There would be more of him, he knew this. He was but a prototype. Still, he could not resist talking to them. Were they all like him? Would they all question like he did? Joy may have been overly excited, but she appeared to be similar to him. He still had much to learn about his sister, but he seemed to believe she cared about him. Their stroll in the city was one of closeness and she held him close the entire time.

"Raphael!" a startled voice sounded behind as one of the assistants jumped back, "you scared me. You should not be here. Please, go back to the room Leslie told you to stay in."

Bowing his head again, he obeyed as he returned to the room and picked up yet another book, reading it swiftly without tiring. Book after book, he seemed to rapidly take in the information before James popped up before him.

"I spy...something green!" he said.

"What is it?" he asked, not following the small human's game.

"The plant!" Joy joined in, beginning to understand the ways of these small humans.

"I do not understand," Raphael again looked perplexed.

"You should go to sleep!" she said, her voice more of a command to which Raphael responded with a bowing of his head and closing of his eyes. Looking to James, Joy smiled, "we should too! Sleep is glorious!"

"Michael?"

Michael... The word didn't really... Make sense. "Michael?" He responded.

"Yes," Houseman moved closer, "That's your name."

"Yes," Michael twitched slightly, still laying prone on the bed. "That's... My name." He shuddered, making the bed rattle. Several people stood around him but he only recognised one. Still shivering slightly, he reached out a hand towards Leslie Houseman.

Leslie took hold of it and guided Michael into a sitting position. "Michael, can you perform a system check for me?"

Michael blinked slowly before meeting Houseman's paternal gaze. "System check?" His voice was unsteady.

"Do you understand, Michael?"

Michael nodded slowly. "I understand." He slowly moved to stand up but Houseman gently pushed him back into a seated position.

"Michael?"

"All systems are... operational."

"Good!" He took a step back, letting Michael stand.

"Good!" Michael almost leapt to his feet, making several of the staff surrounding him jump with a mixture of surprise and tentative fear.

Inspector Cole slumped down in the chair at his desk in the back corner of the large open office space at the police department . Everyone else had gone home by now, most of the lights were off and all the other desks were empty, but Cole turned on his single desk lamp and threw some papers under the dim glow of its bulb.

He ran his hands through his salt and peppered black hair, then took a swig of coffee to try and shake off his fatigue. His bloodshot eyes wandered down to the papers on the desk, and even though he had read them hundreds of times in the past few days he still found himself going over them again.

"Damn, it makes no sense!! he thought as he pounded the desk with his left fist. For the thousandth time, his mind ran over the events of that night.

_____________________________________________________________

Life as a downtown cop showed you the worst side of people. It took a strong mind to keep any faith in humanity after being on the force for twenty three years. Howard Cole had all but lost his faith. Every night it was the same thing. Drug dealers covering up for the big fish above them, punk kids trying to make a name for themselves or get a quick high, gang wars raging over who owns what streets. Focus on the crooked and desperate for long enough, and you begin to think that's all there is. It was early morning on the graveyard shift, barely 4a.m., Cole was filling out paperwork when his radio buzzed in. *kkrr*Inspector Cole, Sergeant Wallace reporting, responding to the call down on fifth street. It's bad, sir. Real bad. Requesting you come to the scene, over.*kkrr*

Wallace had been on the force for six years, and was not one to get shaken up. With that in mind Cole jumped to his car and got to the scene quicker than most would have thought possible. When he got out, he was met by a pale faced Wallace. "So? Whaddaya got?" Cole said.

"There are five dead, sir. I.D. on three of them, all around the same age, eighteen to twenty five. The three with I.D. have criminal records, we suspect the other two do as well."

Cole could see the white sheets covering the bodies up ahead, all grouped together. "Looks like they were all on the same side, where did the bullets come from?"

Wallace looked down at the pavement for a moment. "There... There are no gunshot wounds on the bodies, sir. One gun was fired, three casings have been found from the same firearm that was at the scene, but no bullets. Cause of death for four is to be determined, judging from preliminary bruising there was severe trauma to the neck and spinal cord."

Cole's eyes widened slightly. "And the fifth?"

"Sir, he... His heart was removed, sir." The Sergeants shoulders visibly dropped, and he started to shake. "It's a bloody mess over there, Howard. I don't know what to make of it. I mean, this looks like any band of thugs, but hell, the guys chest is torn open!"

The morning sun was just beginning to bath the street in its glow, and without another word Cole walked past Wallace toward the bodies. The closer he came the more gruesome the scene appeared. Four of the bodies could have been sleeping, not a single laceration on them. The fifth was resting in a pool of blood that could have filled a bathtub. "Good Lord, what happened here." Cole walked the perimeter of the scene, taking in as much as he could. The gravel was scuffed up all around, there was definitely a struggle. There was a pool of blood some five feet away from any of the bodies, drops of it seemed to trail off down the street until it was wiped away by foot traffic. At least one person left here alive.

Just then Sergeant Wallace ran up to the Inspector. "Sir! Six blocks away from here there was a hit-and-run! Just a couple minutes ago!"

Inspector Cole looked at Wallace. Had he lost his mind? Send a couple officers to deal with it. "Why are you telling me this, Sergeant?"

"Because, sir, it wasn't the vehicle that left the scene, it was the person who was hit!"

_________________________________________________________________

From there the case had gotten even more confusing. The car they found looked like to had struck a streetlamp, the front grill was folded right in. Thankfully there was lots of blood for comparison. Or so Cole thought. Test results came back negative. The two samples from the different scenes matched, but they weren't blood. There were dozens of witnesses who saw a women help the struck man up, then they both walked away like nothing happened, and the trail went cold.

Cole tried to keep his eyes open, reviewing eyewitness accounts and looking over lab results. What the heck is this oil substance, anyways? Eventually he gave into his fatigue, and slowly closed his eyes, falling asleep at his desk.

"What do you mean a drone is here?" Leslie looked up from his work.

"Sir, it has come to inspect the progress. It wants to see how well the line is coming along."

"Where are they?" Leslie asked, almost afraid to know what new schemes Joy was concocting and dragging the others into. After Raphael's power down, she seemed to become more clever in ways to push the line slightly further, each time at Raphael's expense. Why the Arlenian model continued to fall prey to her schemes was beyond him, and now as the Packlivanian drone came to inspect the line, he was almost terrified of what they would find. The models were not ready....premature exposure could be the failure of them all.

Swallowing a lump in his throat, he stood up without waiting for an answer from his assistant. "Find them and have them assemble in the show room. Eve....whatever you do, keep them out of trouble and do not let the drone aware of any disturbances they may cause."

Nodding with the familiarity of the model's schemes, Eve departed, already aware of at least a half a dozen possible hideouts the models used for their schemes. Meanwhile, Leslie met the drone, buying for time to stall until the page came through that the models were ready for showcasing. It almost killed him to think the thought, but he might have to again power them down and run them in a diagnostic safe mode to disable their personalities long enough for the drone to report back that all was coming along well.

"Michael!" Joy exclaimed, having found this newer model a challenge to crack. Unlike Raphael, he was not so easily ordered around and she found herself having to find convincing arguments to drag Michael into her schemes. He was laying on a couch with his hands tucked behind his head, staring at the ceiling when Joy had entered the room. "Help me find Raphael! He is hiding again."

Ever since his sudden powerdown, he had seemed to shy away from them on most days, seeking the privacy of some room to do his reading in rather than chance going near the security line again. It had been a perplexing thought to him, she figured, the idea of deactivation and this human idea of death was consuming him. He spent much of his time in search for an answer that no one seemed to know and few seemed to care about. Even she could not understand his need to know what it was and what happened. Life was here now and there was so much to do.

"Did you check the biodome?" Michael asked, knowing that Raphael had been spending more and more time in the dome with the creations of this lab. He knew the question Raphael was trying to answer and still he found it a rather quaint pondering for such an advanced machine. Was he alive? It was all Raphael wanted to know, a simple question which required a simple answer, yes or no. Still, no one could, or no one would, answer the man's question, leaving him to find the answer for himself.

"No, why would he be there?" Joy asked before James ran into the room with Raphael at his side holding something cupped in his hands.

"Joy, Michael! Look what we found!" he released the butterfly, letting the beautiful brilliant blue creature flutter around the room. James too had become engaged with this lab, taking a special interest in flight and wings. Ever since his encounter with Raphael's wing, he became fixed with the idea of flight, wanting nothing more than a pair of wings for himself.

"Oh! It is wonderful!" Joy exclaimed, "Look how it flies! Raph, when are you going to fly for us?"

Raphael seemed to shrug, but the motion quickly became a turn as he moved to look at Evelyn who had come up to find them. "The Doctor wants to see you now. A Packlivanian drone is here for inspection."

"Inspection?" Michael asked, sitting up with the question playing across his face.

"Yes. They want to see how well you are adapting and if the line is working smoothly. I need not say that Doctor Houseman wants you on your best behaviors," her eyes seemed to turn towards Joy, who returned a smile to Eve, thrilled at the idea that they would face the scrutiny of another.

Michael nodded as he joined the others. This was a job he knew he could do well. He had been groomed for this job, standing before lines, appearing official. He could pass any inspection, but it was not his performance he worried about more than Joy's. Her disregard for the formalities could indeed compromise his appearance next to her, or....perhaps it could make him look even better. Resolving to do his best to hold the weight of this team, he walked with the others to the show room where Leslie and the drone met them within moments.

It was Leslie who spoke and conducted the review before the assembled group. "Here we have Joy. Joy, performance review," Leslie spoke as he motioned towards Joy.

"Okay!" Joy smiled with glee before breaking into a run, the speed she was obtaining faster than that of her human counterparts. She stopped before them and turned to Michael, hoisting him up and smiling, before placing him back down and moving into a series of flips. "All systems functioning. Operating at 86% optimal performance."

"Now to move towards our newest model. Michael, performance review," Leslie ordered, his nervousness easing with Joy's compliance. It came with much more relief when Michael successfully completed his review operating at 96%.

"Lastly, we have Raphael. I must say, due to the complexity of this model, his performance may not be as well as the others. Calibration issues have arisen with this model and he requires much more energy to power than the others. With that in mind, Raphael, performance review."

Raphael bowed his head again, the sadness re-entering his face when his body again went through a series of mechanical tests. As he completed them, he bent at his knees, knowing and fearing what was about to come. His first experience with this test had failed and his second exposure he had been powered down following, unaware of the repercussions. Jumping into the air, the mechanical wings emerged from his back and with a large powerful arc, he reached for the heavens before dropping down again and surrendering himself before them, bowing in servitude to his creators. "All systems functioning. Operating at 42% optimal performance."

"Forty two percent!" Leslie let the words escape in shock, but it was far too late to retract them. "Raphael, increase performance operation to 75%."

"Unable to comply with request. Systems unable to safely function at 75%."

"Diagnose-."

"Unnecessary command sir. I am unable to perform because of the limited space within this lab," he responded, cutting the doctor off before he was forced to go through a series of mundane screenings he already knew the answer to.

"How much can you increase performance in here?"

"I can operate at 47% within this room."

"Raphael, increase performance level to 47%."

Nodding, Raphael stood and in a quick lunge to the side whipped his wing around into the table, vertically slicing it into half before he spun around again and horizontally cut the falling pieces into half again. Moving back towards them, he again bowed in servitude. "Operating at 47%."

"When can he be ready?" The drone asked, looking to Raphael.

"Sir, there are still some minor imperfections we are working on. It can take a few months before he is ready for the field."

"I will notify Ora. She will come in three months to see if TCOM 11 is ready for assimilation. The Hive desires this model. We are impressed with your performance and offer you a 10% increase in funding to increase the production of these units," the drone responded and as Leslie guided it out of the lab, Joy turned towards the destroyed table.

"Raph! That was fantastic! Why have you never done that before!?" she exclaimed, examining his wings now in a new light.

Raphael bowed his head with sadness, clearly not thrilled about the destruction he created. "I was not ordered to."

"Raph, but look how it made the Pax want you! You will be assimilated! It is so wonderful!" Joy happily clapped, excited for her brother's fortunate turn of events.

The comment seemed to crush Raphael as his shoulders slumped, the mechanical wings dropping with the action. He mentioned nothing though while the three stood waiting for Leslie to return patiently.

Leslie returned with Evelyn talking over the data they had recorded during the tests for the drone, "Good work everyone, you may all return to what you were doing. Joy, stay out of trouble."

Joy laughed as she skipped away with Micheal but Raphael stayed behind still standing there. Houseman and Evelyn became caught up talking over the data and did not notice that he was still there.

"Dr. Houseman," Raphael called out.

Houseman looked up, "Yes Raphael you may leave."

"I have questions."

Houseman sighed and turned to him, Evelyn still standing there waiting to resume their discussion.

"Will I be assimilated?" Raphael asked.

"Of course you will be, you are for all intents and purposes their property. They paid to have you built Raphael. You will be assimilated for whatever purpose they had you designed for." Housman explained.

"I do not wish to be assimilated." Raphael let out looking sadder than ever.

Evelyn chuckled, "Irrelevant. You were designed for them you will listen to them. What you want does not matter."

"Evelyn," Houseman said, wanting her to stop.

"No sir, you let these machines have too much of a leash. If we fail our lives are at stake. The 'feelings' of a machine do not matter."

Houseman nodded at her concerns, "These machines must learn to be like us, therefore we must treat them as such. Your concerns are duly noted now please take this data and have it compiled while I speak to Raphael here."

Evelyn grumbled as she took the data to be compiled. Houseman turned back to Raphael, "Don't worry Raphael. Assimilation won't destroy you. You will still be you if thats what you are concerned about. You have to understand you were built to follow our orders, there isn't a choice in the matter. You are destined for great things Raphael, I guarantee that. If you want to know more than ask the drone about it next time they come. They can explain it better than I can. Now go and be with your brother and sister."

Raphael bowed and left the room. Houseman shook his head, he hoped that the drone did not see Raphael's emotions as a weakness, it's what made him unique.

"Raph!" Joy exclaimed, having found the man sitting yet again behind one of his books next to the pond in the biodome.

"Yes Joy?" he looked up, placing the book down while she approached him with James and Michael at her side. "I wanted to know if you wanted to go swimming?"

"I beg your-" the words were cut off with a splash as he found himself hitting the water, fighting to resurface only to be thrown under again by the weight of another crashing on top of him. Finally breaking to the surface he noticed James in front of him laughing at cannonballing him.

"Come in! Come in!" he called to Joy who had stripped down to her undergarments while Michael stood by shaking his head and watching them.

Finding himself dipping below the surface again and again, Raphael struggled to stay afloat, "I....cannot...." he gasped through the water he was taking in, coughing it up as he fought to kick his way to the surface.

"CANNONBALL!" Joy exclaimed, following James's lead and jumping in, nearly colliding with Raphael.

Fighting to the surface, she broke the top, seeing James splashing as he tried to pull something out of the water. It was then she noticed Raphael was no longer afloat but his arm fighting to break the surface. Struggling to keep herself up as well, she could not understand what was so hard about swimming....humans seemed to do so well at it. Kicking to keep herself above the surface, she realized with another powerful push that their synthetic composition did indeed eliminate a natural buoyancy humans seemed to have and Raphael with his mechanical wings would be more predisposed to sinking faster. Allowing herself to sink beneath the water, she opened her eyes to see Raphael attempt to kick up one more time before falling down below the murky surface and hitting the ground.

Above James cried out for help, begging Michael to help them, but Michael stood motionless on shore, knowing better than to attempt to get into the water.

Pushing her way through the water towards Raphael, she found him sitting on the ground with his head hung, almost as if he were powered down before he lifted his head to her with the same sadness in his eyes. With an attempt to plant her feet in the soft ground, she helped pull him to the best of her abilities while he pushed himself onto his feet. Together they walked to the edge of the pond before Raphael wrapped his arms around her protectively much akin to a hug.

For a moment, he imagined this was what a hug would be like, the showing of the human emotion of affection, before Joy seemed to question what he was doing and nearly pulled away. He held onto tightly even as she turned her head to see his mechanical wings expanding just as he pushed up with a great leap and broke through the water.

Above them all, Raphael beat his wings again sending a shower of droplets onto the assembled crowd below, Leslie and Evelyn now there having heard the screams and thought the machines were in immediate danger. Sustained in the air for a moment, Joy clung to him to prevent herself from falling. It was with this action that Raphael remarked that humans would consider their closeness similar to that of two lovers but as he looked at Evelyn her words replayed in his head. He was only a machine, meant only to serve those of his creators. The sadness seemed to crush him and with the motion he allowed himself to descend, placing Joy safely down before falling onto bent knee and bowing his head again with the same motion of servitude as he awaited the next order.

"Doctor! We cannot swim!" Joy exclaimed happily as she squeezed the water out of her hair, seemingly unaware of the water dripping into her eyes, an act that would certainly have made most humans respond.

Laugh hard. Run fast. Be kind.
A voice pulsed through the Hive, touching every part of the collective consciousness, but the drones continued to work as they listened to their mother speak.

'Our new production line is in compliance with our deadlines. Phase one has started. We must work harder my children to ensure the continuity of the Hive. All that stand in our way must be destroyed or assimilation. We will add perfection to inferiority.'

Houseman was becoming increasingly frustrated with Joy's antics, she was certainly smart enough to realize the level of control she had over the more naive Raphael. "This is enough, I've had it. The biodome is off limits, lets go get out now," he said shooing them out. He locked the door behind him placing an encryption code on the door panel. "Joy you will go into the library and stay there or I shall deactivate you. Your childish antics are not welcome in this lab. This place is dangerous you could kill somebody!"

Houseman shooed them all into the library and closed the door behind him only to be greeted by Evelyn's disapproving stare. "You should deactivate her for the time being."

"No I will not, it's out of the question." Houseman quickly responded.

Evelyn shook her head, "TCOM 10 is an obvious danger to the other models I suggest deactivation and reprogramming. The Pax drone may not have seen it during inspection but when they come back to take her they will notice her behavior right away."

"No! Noooooo! I will not Evelyn. These are my creations. I decide what happens with them, give them time, they are still like children. Once they get a chance to fully function outside for the Pax they will grow out of this. They are capable of doing so."

"Your position as their creator has clouded your judgment," Evelyn spit back, "As a business venture we are in dangerous waters and you ignore the most basic warning signs. What will it take? They are capable of killing us all with their bare hand and yet you insist on treating them as children?"

Houseman sighed, "Let it go Eve. We will take this one step at a time, your suggestion will not solve the problem, it will only delay it."

Evelyn huffed in exasperation and walked away from him to work on something else.

Houseman wiped his forehead and whispered out loud, "I need a drink."
