So, the Pax has recently gone on an anime/ manga binge this weekend. It got me thinking... Does anyone here have any recommendations? I'll post what I have read/seen as I think of it. Onegai Sensei This was the one that got me into anime to begin with. I had seen the generic stuff that is on Cartoon network, but nothing like this before. I loved it. I recommend it for anyone who can stand a romantic comedy. 8/10 Chobits A robot-human love story. It was pretty good. 9/10 Hand Maid May This one left me wanting... I don't know. Something else? It wasn't bad, but I am not in any hurry to re-watch it. I think it was a little TOO cartoony for me. 6/10 DearS Ok, this one is my guilty little pleasure in life. It got recommended when i mentioned I had watched Chobits. I loved this one. The anime is ok, but I REALLY stress the manga on this one. I don't know why, but I just fell in love with this one. 9/10 anime. 10/10 manga. Spice and Wolf And one more I really like. 10/10 on both. Also, this one is actually based off of light novels, so I want to get them. They are currently in Japanese though, so I have to wait. ![]() Based off of this, does anyone have something I should read/watch? Don't say Clannad. I don't want to cry just yet... |

I actually likes the symbolism in FLCL. I remember a scene where the main guy headbutted a girl and she got menstrual cramps because some of his energy got left over on her... The whole thing is a weird puberty symbol. |

Spice and Wolf is great, and I highly recommend it. Now, the light novels are now in English. I work at Books-A-Million and they are avaliable at both Books-A-Million and Barnes & Noble. Another great series is Beast Warriors: Gulkeeva. However, you can only find it on youtube. But hey, it's free! Another series is Tiger and Bunny. It's an anime about superheroes. You can find it on Hulu.com I also recommend Iron Man anime, Wolverine anime, and X-Men anime. They are awesome! First see Iron Man anime. Believe me you will love it! Onmyou Taisenki is another great anime. A lot of action, comedy, and drama. |

Pack, if you haven't seen Neo Genesis Evangelion.... you must. Definitely time and time again voted among the top five anime series of all time, and is one of my personal favorites. It's just so well-done. I could talk about it for hours. FLCL's been covered, and yes I'm a fan of that too (how can anyone not be a fan of Haruko Haruhara??) Excel Saga. One of my favs, but it's kind of a goofy anime at times. Still it has that peppyness that's fun at times, but I guess can get annoying if you want something serious (I tend to go for the serious animes over the goofy ones). It also has one of my favorite villain names... Space Butler. Another good goofy one is Azumangah Daioh. Ghost in the Shell (and stand alone complex). Like Evangelion, time and time again a top five or top ten. Precursor to The Matrix in many ways, and has a lot of tech junk in it. A very good series. I admit I listen to the soundtracks of the series and the subsequent movies when I roleplay. Gundam, like Gundam Wing, or even Gundam Seed. Good classics, has a lot of the giant robot stuff that's common in other Japanese stuff. Code Geass always struck me as what would happen if we had a weird RP universe and Japan was... well, Japan. Not a bad one. Samurai Champloo... is incredibly well written and the characters are quite believable for being set in Medieval Japan. Lots of good twists. Highly recommend it. Lain's good. So is Full Metal Panic. Other good ones include Ef: a Tale of Memories, Clannad (very very good I might add), Eden of the East is good too. Finally... freaking Samurai Pizza Cats. Though that's not really an anime. It's also incredibly silly and satirical, lol. |

Wow. Todd has covered a lot of ground. I also suggest Inuyasha, both the anime and manga. This is somewhat a manga, but here goes: Marvel's Mangaverse. Kind of what the Marvel Superheroes would be like if they were in a manga universe. Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) has a half-sister, and the Hulk is Godzilla. And Dr. Doom is a woman! Yipes! For those who like Vampires, try Trinity Blood, it's about a Catholic Priest who's a vampire who feds on other vampires and is trying to protect humans from evil vampires. Appears to be fantasy, but is actually sci-fi. A lot of the Gundam shows are good. Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny are great, but so is Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. For manga, I would go with the Guin Saga: the Seven Magi. A very excellent and well-written fantasy manga series. It pays to work in a bookstore. There are a lot of others, but I've seen so many, it's hard to keep track of them all. |

People know their stuff here ![]() I´d recommend rurouni kenshin, lots of action and a bit of both comedy, drama and even romance in the story of a meiji era swordsman. I second evangelion, gundam, full metal panic, ghost in the shell and inuyasha as well as top choices (although people here offered other good choices too). |

I am certainly more into the darker side of anime, though I still enjoy my share of fanservice and humor. Here's a list of anime/manga that I am willing to recommend: Death Note - It's been mentioned before, but I'm mentioning it again. The proverbial chess game that goes on between Light and L is a great plot setup. The series sort of feels like after Mello and Near show up, but there's a reason it was made into a live-action movie with a sequel, a live-action side story and a full-length novel.xXxHolic - If you're into the supernatural, this one is really good. A high school student is cursed with the ability to see spirits and demons, and fate leads him to a rather strange shop that can remove this curse. The use of folklore in this is pretty spot-on. Black Butler - Also a bit on the supernatural side, this story follows a young millionaire in Elizabethan England. Orphaned by a fire that destroyed his home, he delves into the occult to summon a demon to become his servant. The accents in the English dub seriously bother me, but the storyline is still good. Baccano! - One of the funniest animes I have ever seen. The plot is very scatterbrained in the first few episodes, but the more you learn about the story, the more you want to watch. Serial killers on a train, an immortal elixir made on the voyage to america, the highlights of the underground life during the prohibition. Umineko No Naku Koro Ni - This one is a bit on the gory side, but it definitely has its bits of fanservice and humor as well. A well-to-do family is marooned on their own island with a serial killer, who uses the folklore of the Golden Witch--the backstory to how the family became so rich--to kill off family members one by one. This is a unique series in that it tells the same story multiple times (each story receiving about 5 to 6 episodes) with different scenarios added in each time. This is personally one of my favorite animes of all time, and I would recommend it to just about anyone. Right now, I'm watching two animes: Mirai Nikki/Future Diary and Soul Eater. I'll be sure to let everyone know how they are as well. |

These japanese animes were never my cup of tea, so I don't really watch them, but I had a few run ins here and there, and I guess some of you, who are more hardcore fans of these things might find it amusing. So, a while back I stumbled upon an anime series called "Gunsmith Cats". I'm using the term "series" loosely here, since it only had three episodes. In Hungary we would call it a "movie in three parts". Anyway, I watched the first two parts, then I misplaced it somewhere, and I've yet to find it again. At any rate, I don't know if there was any overarcing story, but the two episodes seemed like standalone stories. So, the story is about two female gunrunners/bounty hunters called Rally and Minnie, and thats about it. What I find kind of funny, and I only realized it later, that the two characters are essentially the same as the characters played by Elke Sommer and Sylvia Koscina in "Dealier Than the Male": one is serious, the other is ditzy. I wounder if the creators were inspired by that movie. Also, if I'm not mistaken, "Gunsmith Cats" was originally a manga. Speaking of mangas, I sometimes go to one of the nearby book stores, which has this relatively big comics section. There's always a large number of mangas there, and I occasionally look into them. There I saw this book called "Axis Nations Hetalia" (or something like that). The basic premise is, at least the way I gathered, that the countries of the world are represented by actual persons, and they reenact the history of WW2. And really, who would have thought, that history can be boiled down to teenagers doing shenanigans. Hungary, for example, became the maid/wife of Austria. The whole thing is really odd, and I don't get the humor behind it, especially since the way I see, that writer don't know that much about history. Moving on, I also noticed a Star Trek manga. I'm a big fan of the original series, so looked into it. The funniest part was, that about a third of the book was just text, explaining the moral of the story. I know Gene Roddenberry could get very hamfisted with his morals, but he was subtle compared to this. Anyway, that wasn't the most surprising manga adaptation I ever saw. A few years ago I learned, that back in the late 60's Takao Saito made a manga adaptation of the James Bond novels, which apparently had nothing to do with the actual plots of said novels. Then in 1968 the series was cancelled, and Saito went on to create "Golgo 13". I haven't seen any Golgo 13 animes, but I saw a live action movie, which was made in 1977 and starred Sonny Chiba. It was hilariously over the top, with Chiba sporting these fake eyebrows. Anyway, that's all I have. I know, it's embarrasing, that I'm the only one here, who's not into anime. |

You are not the only one Lazlow. I only know about half these things because a majority of my friends watch or read them and they explain them to me. I find Hetalia to be stupid and I doubt you will see any of the atrocities committed during the war mentioned, typical for the Japanese I think. |

Seitokai No Ichizon - Slice of life comedy. Moe Harem hi-jinks. "The members of the student council of Hekiyou Gakuen are chosen by a popularity vote. As a result, all the members are cute girls except for Sugisaki Ken, who studied hard to enter the council. The story features the endless chattering of the members full of parodies of "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya", "Dragon Ball", "Death Note", etc." Sakura-sō no Pet na Kanojo - Romantic comedy. My favorite this season. "The school romantic comedy revolves around a second-year high school student named Sorata Kanda who lives in Sakurasou, the dormitory for problem children at Sorata's school. One day, Mashiro Shiina—a cute girl who happens to be also a cosmopolitan, brilliant artist—moves into Sakurasou. Sorata thinks to himself that he should protect Mashiro from the weirdos at Sakurasou, but Mashiro has a surprising secret: she has no idea how to take care of herself. She gets lost if she goes out, and her room is a complete mess. Sorata's dorm mates designate him as the "master" of Mashiro, and thus, an ordinary boy and a brilliant girl must live like "a master and his pet." " Mondaiji tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru soudesuyo? - Ecchi comedy. Like Dog Days, but more Ecchi. "Izayoi Sakamaki, Asuka Kudou, and You Kasugabe have tremendous psychic powers and are bored with the regular world. An envelope arrives for each person, and when each opens their envelope, they are stunned to see the scenery around them change to a world they had never encountered before. They've been summoned by the Black Rabbit to help the community "No Name" to overthrow the Devil King." Kotoura-San Comedy? This one would probably be the best for an anime party IMO. Funny, sad, and all around a sleeper hit of this season. "A school love comedy. Kotoura Haruka is a 15-year-old girl who can read people's minds. She has been suffering from troubles caused by her mind-reading ability, and her parents got divorced as a result. She moves to a new high school but tries to keep away from her classmates. Manabe Yoshihisa, one of her classmates, accepts and appreciates her ability and she begins to interact with her friends with his help. " Maoyu - Fantasy. I love this one. Take every stereotype from RPG's ever, and make a parody anime. "After a long and treacherous journey, our Hero finally arrives at the Dark Lady's castle only to find himself being asked for help. The Hero explains how the war that the demons have brought upon the humans have killed thousands and put more in misery. The queen of demons however argues that this war has made the human society band together as one and showed empirical evidence how it has increased population, increased production, boosted economy and improved society overall. Furthermore, she explains to the Hero that ending this war will result in a civil war that will produce more bloodshed than there ever was. The Hero, convinced that the only way to bring peace, relatively speaking, is to join forces with the Dark Lady, agrees to help with her plans!" Hayate no Gotoku - Long Ass anime. Funny. I watch this when I need to kill some brain cells. "16-year-old Hayate is really down on his luck. Because his unemployed parents are good-for-nothings who waste what money they have on gambling, Hayate had to start working at a young age to help out his family. Although such experience has made him inhumanly fast and tough and skilled at things boys aren't normally skilled at, it has also left him in an awkward position, as his parents have racked up such a huge gambling debt that they have sold Hayate to the yakuza for the value of his organs. In a desperate attempt to avoid that fate, Hayate decides to become a "bad guy" and kidnap someone to be held for ransom, but his efforts to do so are mistaken as a confession of love by the girl he targets. When he helps save the (as it turns out) ultra-wealthy 13-year-old Nagi from real kidnappers, she takes him in and gives him a job as her new personal butler (and love interest) until he can pay off his debt. But Hayate is more attracted to Nagi's beautiful teenage maid Maria, and head butler Klaus is initially disapproving of a boy with such a poor look. And then there's Nagi's pet Tama, who is also a force to be reckoned with." |

Sakura-sō no Pet na Kanojo sounds pretty interesting like it would be good. Kotoura-San Sounds balanced Maoyu- sounds awesome, like Glen Cook's Black company almost, will have to look it up Erm kinda a noob question but how do you get your anime? Do you dl it or watch it online? Or do you get it from a local shop? I used to work at blockbuster so i could get access to their catalog but it was rather shitty. My store manager hooked me up from his collection but he bought all those hard copy, but he moved so i cant loot him anymore. |

I have lots of disposable income, and I speak Japanese, so I go for import disks when I really like something. For US stuff, I use Crunchyroll and Funimation's subscription service. For older stuff, AnimeSeasons.com. I must stress, please use the completely legal CR and FUN before resorting to AnimeSeasons. It helps spread a market base so we actually get more anime over here. For manga, the same applies. I normally just import it. Otherwise, Batoto is pretty good. Currently Reading WARNING NSFW |

Code Geass, it's a bit of a train wreck in the second season, but it's still quite good. I'll also recommend Death Note. Elfen Lied, it's bloody, violent and there's quite a lot of nudity, so it's not for everyone but it's still quite good. |
