“From dust we were created and to dust we shall return.”

It was night in the capital city of Pittsburgh and like all nights, President Allen Gordon was fully awake, reading communiques or writing. The formation of the Grand Council had come and gone and not a Alleghenian diplomat was to be found on or near Christy Island. He would not subject his power to a multi-national entity, though that was not what kept him and his diplomatic corps from attending. Unrest had grown in Allegheny to an almost fiery level, he had used all his power in the media to keep that fact out of the hands of other nations but he feared it would not be long until others knew about the potential revolution. His puppet David Shepard had been promoted to Commander General of all the Allegehnian military forces after the last Commander, Cassandra Phillips had retired to her home in the forests of Elyse. The changing of the guard had been a boon to Gordon’s iron grip over the nation, Phillips was not easy to control and had her own ambitions before she had gone into retirement. With his control of the senate he had snuffed out all opposing voices and for a time it was good.

Then a few months back things began to change, a group calling themselves the Sons of Liberty had arisen and it’s voice was heard over pirated radio and television frequencies in every major city exposing the people’s lack of freedom to the masses. Most people, now nothing but mindless drones sucking up the endless amount of available entertainment, had not listened but a few less controllable people had heard and were now helping spread the message. Military police and city police forces alike were used to crack down and many were arrested or silenced, but the leadership of the Sons had not been captured and tracking them was almost nigh impossible, almost being the keyword. A few weeks ago they had almost found the source of the transmissions but after a firefight and some elusive, expert driving the frequency hijacker got away.

Despite Gordon’s success in cracking down on the enlightened ones, the mindless masses were starting to wake and now open protests reached the streets demanding their freedom and real democracy. Protests turned into riots and riots turned into mini-bloodbaths as augmented soldiers cracked down on the protestors. This had not done well to quiet the waking masses, despite Gordon’s control of the media and international press releases, the word of the crackdown was spread by word of mouth, pirate radio, the internet; media sources that were not so easy to control.

Gordon typed away on his computer, writing e-mail after e-mail, the sun would soon rise and with it another day full of work and worry. The sound of a door opening could be heard in the next room over. Gordon looked up from his computer and then back to the screen, it was most likely just one of his security guards, that thought changed in the next instant though as the door to his private office opened.

“What is it!” He said in a surprised tone; it was indeed one of his security guards, a newly recruited augment.

The guard did not answer him, staring at him with this glowing blue eyes. Slowly the guard walked toward him.

"What is the meaning of this, can’t you see I am busy? Be gone!

But the guard would not be gone, in the time it took the president to tell him off the guard had closed the distance. Gordon suddenly found himself on his feet, his hand shaking in the sudden fear that had washed over him. The guard stood there for a moment studying Gordon and then suddenly the guard was on him. Gordon could not escape the grip of the guard and was knocked out. What seemed like a split second passed and Gordon awoke with his head throbbing and something scratching his neck. He found himself on the roof of the tower that housed the presidential apartment, a rope around his neck.

“What the…” Gordon was cut off but the imposter guard that had taken him here, somehow without anyone else knowing.

"Allen Gordon, President of the Union Republic, your crimes against freedom are many and would take too long to list here. The Sons of Liberty movement has intensified and you cannot contain us. We find you guilty of oppressing your people and hoarding power for yourself. Today will mark a new age in Alleghenian history, an age that will be marked with your death; for to be free the people must spill the blood of tyrants and you are very much a tyrant. May God have mercy on your soul.

Gordon found himself weightless, falling before he could say anything and a split second later the rope tightened around his neck with great force, though his neck did not break. Allen Gordon swung from the flag pole jutting out from the roof, his legs swinging forty stories up over the streets below. The pain was great, but soon it began to dissipate as the world went black; the last thing he saw before he died was the rising sun of a new age he would never see.
