[Ash:] Dear viewers, welcome back to the special edition of PBC World. As I mentioned before, with me in the studio is the rector of the Center for Political Sciences, Elena Holeanu, and journalist Bogdan Ionescu. In a few moments, we will have the results. Mrs. Holeanu, you said earlier that this year is a year of change in the politics of our country.
[Elena:] Yes, and I will tell you why. For the first time in the political history of the country, we had a left-wing governing coalition, with a party assumed by the extreme left at the helm. We have also seen an ascension, so to speak, of the political left at both the regional and federal levels, taking into account the right-wing governments so far.
[Bogdan:] And, of course, in addition to this, we have observed several corruption cases being solved by the General Anti-Corruption Commission. The most famous examples, which I personally think we all know, are the Limsilva case and the BNL reserves theft case, cases that have been delayed in the courts for a very long time.
[Ash:] However, let’s not forget that some of the convicted criminals fled the country, specifically Ran Pristine and Bertha Neumann.
[Elena:] A rather sad thing, considering that they have delayed the trial of the cases in which they are convicted for as long as… 7-8 years, if I remember correctly?
[Bogdan:] Yes, for almost a decade.
[Ash:] Ok, a few more seconds until we find out the final result. There was a large turnout in these elections, a record compared to the last elections. And here it is…
The screen cuts to a pie chart showing the results.
[Ash:] … the United Popular Front with 51%, followed by the Libertarian Party with 32.6%, the Justice Party with 8.4% and the Liberal Union with 8%. As we can see, the United Popular Front won the majority.
[Elena:] A pretty incredible score, if I may put it that way. The far-right also had an okay performance. In a way, the two political extremes won.
Ash looks as Bogdan, who is staring at the chart with the results displayed on the large screen behind them.
[Ash:] Bogdan, I noticed that you are looking at the results in amazement.
Bogdan turns back to Ash.
[Bogdan:] Yes, Ash, and more so because of the funny situation. Because of the result that the Liberals have. The Civics have gone from being the largest political force in the country to 8%, and this in an electoral alliance.
[Elena:] After what happened at the beginning of the year, it can be said that Odobescu was the best option for the party leadership, compared to Dominic Grey, and this could lead to his removal from the party leadership. That is if he does not resign, of course.
[Bogdan:] A worrying result is that of the far-right and the “Agrarian Party”, which from my point of view can be a satellite party of the Libertarians, and I will tell you why. Ileana Vântur, the party’s founder, is a former member of the Alliance for Liberty. Besides that, the party has almost the same so-called anti-establishment message as the Libertarian Party. However, fortunately, they do not have a majority. It remains to be seen what will happen next.
