Why did you choose it? And for that matter, why did you choose your flag / avatar?

I understand this has probably been done before, but we haven’t done this in a while. I’ll talk about my stuff later - I’m more interested in knowing about your stuff.

I chose mine because I’m a fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. In the book I mention in my sig - Guards! Guards! - FABRICATI DIEM, PVNC is written above the doors of the Night Watch headquarters (think about it for a minute). The flag is another thing from Discworld. In Night Watch, “How Do They Rise Up” was a key phrase for the book - the refrain from a soldiers’ song called “All the Little Angels”. I took the graphic from the book’s cover and put the words over it, and voila!

 I loved that show!

Anyways, my nation name came from…I’m really not sure. The back of my mind somewhere. Earth probably came from one of my usernames on a different forum (earthTOPHbender [it was an Avatar: The Last Airbender fansite]) but the 22…I don’t know. I’m not 22, my birthday is on the 10th, and I don’t really know where it came from.

As for my original flag, it was from Anchorman, but when it got mod reported, I changed them all to either ‘Dark’ ‘Earth’ or ‘WC’ with a pretty star thing. 😛

Walking-Contradiction actually came from a story I was reading on Facebook’s Bathroom Wall a while back… 😛 Not the Green Day song.

Hmm, I haven’t heard a lot about discworld, to be honest, but I did happen to look up the Latin (Latin fails me as it is). It’s interesting how it’s kind of a play on words, lol, especially the last word. But I can’t say I’ve read any of those books before (apparently there’s a lot). Without giving a lot of the plot away, could you summarize a little bit of it?

Ha. I miss Dexter’s Lab. Apparently some people have made bootlegged DVD’s, but I haven’t really looked into it. As for Avatar, that’s the anime, not the movie, right? And Facebook has a bathroom wall? I’d imagine it’d be quite crowded, lol.

Well, I highly encourage you to go and pick up some Discworld books from the nearest library. The best are Night Watch, Hogfather and Feet of Clay, with Reaper Man up there as well.

As for the plot, well…

REAPER MAN: On the Discworld, the Grim Reaper stalks across the planet, doing his job. He doesn’t dislike humans - in fact, he finds them fascinating. He’s just very good at what he does.
But he’s been getting a little too… involved recently, and the ancient enemies of life, the Auditors, have seen fit to displace him because of this. Death is now mortal, and while a replacement is found the Disc is going crazy with all the built-up life force.
But forget about that, because Death is discovering life for the first time.

FEET OF CLAY: City Watch Commander Sam Vimes has his hands full already, and more keeps getting piled on. Someone has just tried to assassinate Lord Vetinari, the semi-benevolent tyrant. The city’s streets are stuck in gridlock. The citizens are growing increasingly angry with the arrival of golems, which are taking all the jobs. And to make things even worse, a string of strange murders has just taken place, with the only clue being a strange white clay…

HOGFATHER: It’s Hogswatchnight on the Disc, that time of year where the jolly old Hogfather comes to town in his sleigh and gives presents to all the good little boys and girls. But the Hogfather is missing.
The Auditors have moved against humanity once again, this time drafting the assistance of the psychotic Assassin Johnathan Teatime and his gang. Somehow, Teatime has found a way to get rid of the Hogfather. And while the wizards - and our protagonist, one Susan Sto Helit - run around trying to find a way to bring him back, someone has to fill in for him. Unfortunately, the only one available is Death.

NIGHT WATCH: Commander Vimes was chasing a psychotic killer across the rooftops of his city a minute ago. Just his luck that he chose to do so in the middle of a thunderstorm… and on top of the wizard’s university.
Now a magical accident has sent him back in time thirty years, to the eve of the biggest rebellion in the city’s history. Vimes has been thrust reluctantly into playing the role of Sergeant John Keel, hero of the revolution and leader of the Night Watch.
But that’s not the worst part. The worst part is that, if things don’t go the way they should, Vimes won’t get to go home. But letting things go the way they should is not something Sam Vimes is willing to do, because that would mean the deaths of seven good men - and that is something that he is not willing to let happen.

Don’t be turned off by the plot description I gave. They sound weird when you’re not reading it, but Pratchett has a gift for words that no other author has ever matched. He mixes comedy with brilliant insight. In my opinion, he is nothing more than the greatest writer who ever lived.

Oh, yeah, my new title is also a reference to a Disc book, but…

SPOILER ALERT (can’t find out how to fully hide it, so it’s just small and in gray)

In Thud!, Vimes is eventually overwhelmed by the Summoning Dark, which makes him go on a psychotic rampage - and this is fine, until Vimes gets through the last of the hostile enemy soldiers and the Dark attempts to make him kill an unarmed innocent. Inside his head, the Summoning Dark is attacked and captured by a shadowy being in the form of a watchman:

“What kind of human creates his own policeman?”
“One who fears the dark.”
“As he should,” said the entity, with satisfaction.
“Indeed. But you misunderstand. I’m not here to keep the darkness out. I’m here to keep it in.” The lamplight cut through the night. “Call me… the Guarding Dark. Imagine how powerful I must be.”

The Guarding Dark is the manifestation of Vimes’ own mental power and determination not to be corrupted. It is the one who watches the watchmen - and that’s what my new title means: the one who watches the watchmen.
