A Special Occasion

The Imperial Palace, Anis, The Archduchy of Anisia, The Holy Empire of Coxnord

“So, now that we have opened ourselves up, why are we not receiving any calls?”

“My Holy Empress, nobody knows us. We need to meet people. Perhaps host something, something social.” Chancellor Catherine Decker sat down in one of the three Louis XV style armchairs in front of the Empress’ desk, a large oak desk with a golden frame standing on golden, ornate legs.

Anne III Mary Isabelle, 44 years old and Empress since her mother passed away 6 years ago, leaned back in her broader, higher and more ornate armchair.

“Chancellor”, she said, distancing herself slightly from the official she usually addressed by first name. “We must not lower ourselves to arranging common mixers.”

“Of course not, My Holy Empress. However, it might prove beneficial if we had the opportunity to invite the region to a significant event taking place in The Holy Empire.” Catherine glanced at the impressionist landscape painting hanging behind the Empress. What sort of event was she talking about? She had not thought of one herself.

“Yes, Catherine. A significant event, you say?” Anne looked around her heptagonal office, as if the answer was hiding somewhere among the rococo furniture and large paintings. Paintings? Her eyes reached the floor-to-ceiling portrait of Anne’s great-grandfather Emperor Charles VII Christian. An idea sparked in her mind. “Perhaps a family event?”

“A family event?” Catherine repeated. What was the Empress talking about? Family events were not significant, except for funerals. And births. And… yes, of course! That must be it.

Anne did not wait for a further response from the Chancellor. She pressed the intercom on her desk and asked the State Secretary to join them.

A door opened and William Turner, a thin red-haired man in his 30s, walked in.

“William, we need to see The Duke of Cox immediately. And then The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess Mother of Oconia as soon as possible. For this evening, extraordinary sessions for both Council and Regents. The matter will be explained to them after we have spoken with The Duke, Grand Duke and Grand Duchess Mother. That is all.”

“Understood, My Holy Empress.” The State Secretary left as quickly as he had entered.

“With My Holy Empress’ permission, I shall get to work on this then.” Catherine said.

“Thank you, Catherine.”

The Chancellor stood up and left the Empress’ office through the main doors.

A letter arrives at the Imperial Palace in the Holy Empire of Coxnord. It is a message from the Confederacy of Vulshain.

The letter contains the following message:

Dear Holy Empress Anne III Mary Isabelle of the Holy Empire of Coxnord,

The Confederacy of Vulshain congratulates you on opening your borders to the world.  While there are indeed those who lust and hunger for power, often for personal reasons, there are those who desire peace and friendship with other nations.  Vulshain is one of those who seeks to establish peaceful and friendly bonds with others.  Our newly elected and crowned Monarch, King Samuil Rainard, is currently touring the East Pacific, and while we are most overjoyed that so many nations are inviting him to visit their nations, the king will certainly take a short break from his trip to return to his Vulshain before returning to his tour.  After he returns home, we would be honored if you and your court would visit Vulshain in the hopes of forging bonds between our two countries.

I hope you will accept our invitation.  I ensure you that security will be of top priority during your visit here, to safeguard your life from any and all who may wish you and your court harm.

Happy New-Year!

Sincerely, Chief Prime Minister Adalberto Spencer of the Confederacy of Vulshain

Groener House, Anis, The Archduchy of Anisia, The Holy Empire of Coxnord

“We hereby call this extraordinary meeting of the Regents of the Holy Empire to order” Anne said and with a steady hand let the gavel meet the conference table in the Regency Hall of Groener House in the Imperial Capital. “The item of business for this extraordinary meeting is one that brings us much joy.”

Smiles were upon all ten faces around the table. A few hours earlier they had all been told why they had been called here and the matter did indeed bring joy to them all.

“We have spoken with our son”, the Empress continued, “The Duke of Cox, who, as you all undoubtedly know, has been in a relationship with The Grand Duke of Oconia for the past three years. We are, personally, very pleased to tell you all that it is the wish of our son and ourselves that they be joined in Holy Matrimony. Perhaps The Grand Duke would like to say something before we continue?”

“Thank you, Your Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty” the young Grand Duke started. He felt the eyes of the entire room upon him and had to make an effort not to blush. “I can assure you all that The Duke and I are very much in love and my mother has asked me to convey to you all her blessing of this union. As you all know, as a Regent, one dares hardly hope for meeting that one true desire of the heart, let alone for marriage with that person. There is nobody that I would rather spend eternity with.”

“You have all received the Council’s ruling in favour”, Anne continued. “There is the concern on succession however. Since The Duke is second in line to The Holy Empire, Anisia and Cunula, if, God forbid, The Crown Prince were to pass on without any heirs, the heirs of The Duke and The Grand Duke would inherit more power than seen before in The Holy Empire. You should all consider the implications of this scenario.”

“Your Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty”, King Frederick Alexander of Ashtley interjected, “of concern is also the successional situation in Oconia. With very few heirs to his throne, we should not ignore the need for The Grand Duke to get married.”

“Besides”, Emma Lilian Baker, Archbishop of Elthor, added, “either The Crown Prince will be blessed with heirs or The Holy Empire will be blessed with a stronger Imperial line. We should celebrate that the Lord Almighty has instilled in two young hearts an undying love for eachother.”

“And”, Frederick continued, “since our votes are all equal here, if I may be so blunt, a scenario with fewer Regents would mean more power for each Regent that remains.”

“Alright, we are not hearing any opinions against this union”, the Empress summed up the short discussion. “We propose that the Regents approve of the marriage between The Duke of Cox and The Grand Duke of Oconia. All in favour…”

Everyone at the table said “Aye”.

“All opposed…”, Anne asked pro forma. Silence.

“Fantastic! Thank you all for coming on such short notice. We hope you will all join us in the Orring room for some light refreshments. We hereby close this meeting.” Gavel.

The following response is sent to the Confederacy of Vulshain:

— Begin quote from ____

Dear Chief Prime Minister Adalberto Spencer of the Confederacy of Vulshain,

HI&RAM The Holy Empress thanks You for Your most kind congratulations and wishes to congratulate the Confederacy of Vulshain on the coronation of HM King Samuil Rainard.

Although we have been isolated for quite some time, The Holy Empire is deeply committed to peace and equality.

You should have received by now an invitation to the wedding between The Holy Empress’ second son and the Grand Duke of Oconia, one of the 12 states in The Holy Empire. We understand the busy schedule of HM The King but nevertheless hope the Confederacy of Vulshain will be able to attend.

The Holy Empress is delighted to accept Your invitation to visit Vulshain and would like to schedule the visit to after Her son’s wedding, as The Holy Empress is naturally deeply involved therein.

Happy El Farto Dayo!

Dear Chancellor Catherine Decker, Head of the Second Section of HI&RAM Own Chancery, The Holy Empire of Coxnord,

I’m afraid that my grandson will be unable to attend the wedding.  However, I will be attending the wedding in his place.  I hope you do not mind.  As member of the Royal Confederate Family, I can represent the current Monarch, but only if I’m related to the Monarch.  I think being the grandmother of the current ruler satsfies that requirement.

I will be bringing my personal attendant and one of King Samuil Rainard’s cousins, Captain Melisande Amarantha of the Royal Protectors with me.  She is also my personal bodyguard.  I hope that this doesn’t pose a problem.

I look forward to attending the wedding.

In addition, I also send you a Happy New-Year’s greeting.

Sincerely,

Queen Dowager Anatansya Olekalexein

— End quote

Queen Dowager Anatansya Olekalexein sent the message as she stretched her old body out. She was 72 years old, and wrinkles and signs of old age had appeared on her face and body, but she was still beautiful nonetheless. Not to mention, she tried to execrise a good bit as often as she could. She had dyed her fur to resemble when she was a younger Lobo. “Marriage? Ah, to be young and in love again. I wonder when that knucklehead of a grandson of mine will find some beautiful woman and settle down with her.”

Captain Melisande Amarantha was preparing the massage table as she looked up. “You’re not going to play match-maker are you?”

“Bah! Melisande, dear, if there’s one thing, we Monarchs of Vulshain have always had a say in who we marry. Call it hardheadedness or destiny, but we will always resist others from messing with our love lives.” Anatansya got out of her chair and tightened the towel around her body as she got up on the massage table. “Oh…I definitely need this massage.”

Melisande went to work. “Ah…That’s the stuff.” The Queen Dowager let her tongue hang out as she was massaged.

Waking up with a start, she looked around. “Be careful now. I don’t want you to shatter a hip or facture something before you have to go to the wedding.”

Sighing, Anatansya allowed Melisande to help her up. “How long was I asleep?”

“An hour and a couple of minutes. I thought it best for you to sleep. You haven’t been sleeping well lately.”

“I know. But…”

“But what?”

“It’s just that Samuil’s mother, my daughter, Vikki, never wanted him to become ruler. I guess I’m just worried about him, like any grandmother would. Now, enough of this talk. I’m still tired. I’ll retire early today.”

Her personal attendant nodded as she helped the Queen Dowager to her room.

The Queen Dowager was relaxing in a herbal bath, reading the news and the recent email sent by Chancellor Catherine Decker. Just as she started typing, her chest started to hurt. She quickly took some pills to ease the pain. “Stupid chest pains.” She went back to typing.

Dear Chancellor Catherine Decker, Head of the Second Section of HI&RAM Own Chancery, The Holy Empire of Coxnord,

Thank you for allowing me to attend the wedding.  I will need to know what customs and taboos are followed in your nation in order to prevent a diplomatic slight against your nation, even if accidental, would certainly damage any and all attempts to forge relations between our two nations.  I am also bringing my personal physician, Dr. Nigel Felix Ivor, as I have been having chest pains off and on for awhile now.  However, you have nothing to fear or worry, I am fine.  I am just old that’s all.

I look forward to seeing the wedding.

Give my congratulations to the bride and groom.

King Antonio of Azulcena received a hard copy of the email within minutes of it arriving. He looked it over and dismissed the aide that had brought it to his personal office. CHANCELLERY OF THE KINGDOM OF AZULCENA

Esteemed Chancellor Catherine Decker of Coxnord,

King Antonio I sends to you and your Empress his deepest gratitude at the invitiation to this joyous and momentous occasion.  As it is the King’s wish to promote equality and progressivism at home and abroad, he wholeheartedly accepts your invitation to attend the wedding of these two sons of your country.  I, as well, look forward to this as the beginning of formal relations between our two nations.

The King has yet to finalize his plans, however, as he is currently seeking someone to accompany him.  To quote His Majesty directly, “You have to bring a date to a wedding.”  When these plans are finalized, my Chancellery will send word.

Please find attached the details of the King’s personal guard detachment and our travel arrangements, to be forwarded to your Chancellor Robert Jones.

Dear Queen Dowager Anatansya Olekalexein of the Confederacy of Vulshain,

Your Majesty,

HI&RAM The Holy Empress and HRH The Grand Duchess Mother of Oconia whole-heartedly welcome Dr. Ivor to the wedding and hope Your Majesty will be blessed by the best of health in this and all coming years.

We have put together a short guide of https://forum.theeastpacific.com/invision-404 which we hope may be of some help. At the wedding service in the Imperial Cathedral and at the following reception in the Imperial Palace, guests are expected to wear clothes that reach at least so far down as to cover the knees. Stomache and toes should also be covered, while shoulders, back, cleavage and ankles may be covered or left open. In the Imperial Cathedral, guests are expected not to wear any form of headgear, while such restrictions do not apply in the Imperial Palace.

In the Imperial Cathedral, it is customary to say nothing that does not have a function in the service. The service will be conducted primarily in English, but with passages in German, Swedish and Icelandic, and all of it will be interpreted into Imperial Sign Language. Your Majesty will find a pair of headphones available at the seat through which live interpretation will be given in several languages. Your Majesty may choose to partake in an optional custom of guests spreading leaves in the church aisle before taking their seats. The leaves should come from a plant that is indigenous to the guest’s home and has a place in the guest’s heart. When the couple to be married walks down the aisle (in The Holy Empire, neither party is given away in marriage, both parties walk down the aisle together), the leaves they walk upon symbolise the support of friends and family which carries them into their life together.

Your Majesty will naturally be seated at the head table at the reception dinner and we shall make sure that Captain Amarantha and Dr. Ivor are seated close to Your Majesty. In The Holy Empire, gender no longer plays any part in seating and guests are expected to partake in conversation with all guests in their immediate proximity. A formal dinner in The Holy Empire consists of five courses: starter, soup, main course, cheese and dessert. Guests are asked if they prefer vegetarian food over meat and alcoholic or non-alcoholic beverages. It is considered rude to comment on another person’s choice to drink or not to drink alcohol or on the amount they do or do not drink, though waitors are prohibited by law from serving alcohol to those who are deemed to have had too much. Leaving something on one’s plate is a silent demonstration that that particular food was not fit for eating. If there is another reason, it may be given when the waitor collects the plate, e.g. “I am afraid I am allergic to asparagus”. Leaving something in a glass on the other hand, especially alcohol, is seen as exercising moderation in drinking.

Citizens of The Holy Empire are generally very open and outspoken. Religion, sex and politics are considered acceptable topics in any setting. Insulting someone can be challenging as people are not easily offended. Worth noting is however that it is seen as cowardly to joke about people not present or groups of people. Some Imperial Citizens may be annoyed by negative remarks on The Holy Empire. A compliment is often a good conversation starter.

Sincerely,

Chancellor Catherine Decker, Head of the Second Section of HI&RAM Own Chancery, The Holy Empire of Coxnord

Dear Chancellor Catherine Decker, Head of the Second Section of HI&RAM Own Chancery, The Holy Empire of Coxnord,

I wish to thank you for allowing me to come to the wedding.  I am Dr. Nigel Felix Ivor, the Queen Dowager’s personal physician.

While the Queen Dowager is feeling quite well and will be able to attend, I must ask you to make several precautionary arrangements.

First, and I do apologize if I may sound demanding here, I must ask that you have your nation’s best and top surgeons, doctors, nurses, and heart specialists ready and on standby should Her Majesty have any problems.

Next, please have EMTs and an ambulance, and just as an added precaution, a medical helicopter, standing by should anything happen.  And I hope that nothing does happen, but it is better to be prepared and nothing happens, than to be unprepared and the worst case scenario erupts.  Also, have law enforcement ready at a moment’s notice to escort the ambulance to the nearest hospital.  Being a doctor, I cannot stress the importance that time has on situations like this, and should anything go wrong, we will need any second we can get.

I will be bringing a portable crash cart with me as well.

I thank you for your assistance and willingness to help me ensure the safety and welfare of the Queen Dowager.

Sincerely,

Dr. Nigel Felix Ivor

The Imperial Palace, Anis, The Archduchy of Anisia, The Holy Empire of Coxnord

“Next item of business, international guests. Catherine?” Anne turned her head and looked at the Chancellor responsible for relations and communications.

“Yes, My Holy Empress. We have received word from Vekaiyu that they will be sending Ms Iliyana Rekistrusle, Foreign Officer. And Vulshain… this Dr Ivor… My Holy Empress, I do not know what to make of him…”

“My Holy Empress, if I may…” Robert Jones, the other Chancellor present interjected. After a gesture from the Empress, he continued: “Dr Ivor has presented a rather substantial list of requests for precautionary arrangements to secure the well being of Her Majesty the Queen Dowager. Some of it falls under the arrangements already planned, but it does go further. I assess that some of it is completely uncalled for, however, the political aspect of not fulfilling this request does not rest on my table.”

“My Holy Empress”, Catherine said, following the cue from her colleague, “I would like to tell this doctor to forget about it, but as he is the trusted personal physician of Her Majesty the Queen Dowager, protocol requires us to treat his words as Her Majesty’s own and by extension as the words of His Majesty the King of Vulshain. If he is as stubborn as the brute tone of his requests suggests, a conflict could quickly blow out of proportion.”

“Understood”, Anne said and paused in contemplation. “How hard would the requests be to fulfil?”

“I have prepared a plan for My Holy Empress’ review”, Robert said, produced a document and put on the table in front of the Empress. “Including a financial estimate.”

Anne quickly eyed the piece of paper. “Well, for the well being of Her Majesty the Queen Dowager and for relations with the Confederacy we do hereby authorise these measures and expenditures. As long as our fellow hostess agrees.” Anne turned her head and looked at the other Catherine present, the Grand Duchess Mother of Oconia, the mother of her son-in-law-to-be. Anne handed the document to her.

“Yes, there is nothing about this that I have any reason to object to”, Grand Duchess Mother Catherine said after looking over the document.

“Very well”, Anne concluded. “How about Azulcena?”

“No word from their Chancery on the details yet, My Holy Empress. Although we do expect His Majesty the King to attend and to bring a date.” Chancellor Decker sounded a bit frustrated.

“But, how do we move on with the seating arrangements then?” asked the Grand Duchess Mother. “Is His Majesty engaged? Will His date be Royal?”

“He is not engaged, Your Royal Highness. And judging by His Majesty’s reputation, I would guess the date will not be Royal. We could probably go ahead and seat her - well, I say ‘her’ again judging by His Majesty’s reputation - somewhere else than the head table. Oh and good news! We have received word of a fourth international group of guests: The Lord of Veerilion and…”, Catherine looked down at her papers, “…The representative of the House of Veerilion, Miss Veronica Fiome.”

“Veerilion?” Anne asked, intrigued. “Are they not homophobic?”

Robert shifted his papers, moving the one on Veerilion to the top of the pile in front of him. “My Holy Empress, their male inhabitants who love men live in moralistic oppression and while the situation is definitely better for women it remains of concern. The First Department will be making sure that the guests from Veerilion will be safe.”

“My Holy Empress, the names of the two getting married were very clearly stated in the invitation”, the other Chancellor added, “so we have to assume that Lord Veerilion has accepted knowingly to attend their wedding.”

“Very well. We shall welcome Veerilion with open arms. Hopefully he will see the truth in the proverb ‘When you fight love, you are always a loser’.” Anne smiled, a part of her hoping Lord Veerilion had missed that it was a wedding between two men and picturing the look on his face finding it out while already seated in the Imperial Cathedral.

“This Miss Fiome, should she be seated at the head table as well as Lord Veerilion?” the Grand Duchess Mother asked.

“I think so, Your Royal Highness. I think it is best to treat her as Royalty.” Catherine Decker did not want to hurt any egos among the guests from Veerilion.

OOC: In “The Most Reverend Archbishop of Elthor, Emma Lilian Baker”, do you mean perhaps “Most Revered” instead of “Most Reverend”? Not trying to nitpick, it just seems kind of odd to me, since I’m familiar with Reverend as a noun instead of an adjective.

OOC2: To any of you older RPers who read this, I’m very busy IRL and will only be able to participate very minimally in any RPs. For this time period (I estimate at least three months) we’ll assume that my nation is undergoing “internal personnel restructuring” - elections for lack of a better term.

OOC: “The Most Reverend” is a style used in reference to Archbishops in some religions. The adjective “revered” is not used in that sense. Perhaps I should have written “The Most Reverend the Archbishop of Elthor, Emma Lilian Baker” with an extra “the” in there? Yes, that seems to be supported by an online Church of England glossary, which notes on Archbishops:

Dear Chancellor Catherine Decker, Head of the Second Section of HI&RAM Own Chancery, The Holy Empire of Coxnord,

I have unfortunate news.  While I will still be attending the wedding, Dr. Nigel Felix Ivor will not be accompanying me.  He was murdered.

His killers claim to be members of a radical terrorist group called the Republican Freedom Army.  They murdered Dr. Ivor and left a message threatening to kill me and the Holy Empress’ second son and the Grand Duke of Oconia.  They have demanded that if Coxnord values the lives of the Holy Empress’ second son and the Grand Duke of Oconia, that you will assassinate me and assist them in overthrowing my grandson, King Samuil Rainard.

I do not take kindly to such petty threats from murderous cowards.  I will attend the wedding in defiance of their demands and vile acts.

I apologize for sending you this terrible news.

I hope the Den Mother will watch over us all, and also bring justice to those who would dare disrupt such a joyous occasion.

Sincerely,

Queen Dowager Anatansya Olekalexein

She sent the message. She sighed as she laid back in her chair. She turned and looked at small picture on the table beside her. She picked it and a smile appeared. Cordially,
Chancellor Catherine Decker, Head of the Second Section of HI&RAM Own Chancery, The Holy Empire of Coxnord

“What’s this then? ‘Strategic plan for Chancery Internal Communication’. Right. Hmm, perhaps I could think about that one over lunch. Ah, a message from the Queen Dowager. Oh? What the…? Wha…” Catherine’s eyes widened in shock. After being paralysed for a second she pressed a couple of buttons on her desk phone. “Robert, I need you. Now.” She did not even bother waiting for a response as she knew how her fellow Chancellor would react to such a request, made in such a tone. Sure enough, the door to her office was opened, if ‘opened’ would be a proper word for describing what almost seemed like it was thrown off its hinges. Chancellor Robert Jones, a muscular, army-looking tall man in his early 30s stood before her, not even out of breath. “Read”, Catherine said and swung her monitor around so he could see the message from Vulshain.

And Robert read. “Right”, he said to indicate he was done, to Catherine’s surprise remaining his composure. “Don’t answer the Queen Dowager until you’ve heard back from me.”

Not waiting for any response, Robert bolted back out the door, through the hallway and into his own office. “Christian!”, he yelled to the Vice-Chancellor he knew was in the adjacent office, to which the door currently stood open.

“Yes, Sir!”, the Vice-Chancellor responded as he came running into the office.

“I need the location of Cox and Oconia, now.”

“Understood, Sir!”. The Vice-Chancellor ran back to his own office and after a few seconds shouted from within: “Cox in Imperial Palace, library. Oconia in office.”

“Secure Oconia in office! Stand by for further instructions!” Robert shouted and started running again, back out into the hallway and continuing down to the ground floor and out the door. He took up his mobile phone and chose speed dial #1, the Empress.

“Yes, Robert?”, Anne asked as she answered the call to her emergency mobile.

“My Holy Empress, authorisation requested for Major Red, Cox and Oconia. I repeat, authorisation requested for Major Red, Cox and Oconia. Motivation, quoting message from Queen Dowager, Vulshain: Ivor murdered by radical terrorist group, name ‘Republican Freedom Army’, threat on Queen Dowager, Cox and Oconia. Goal political, overthrowing King of Vulshain. Authorisation requested.”

“Authorisation granted. Oh and Robert”, Anne’s voice trembled, “take care of them.”

“I will personally see to it, My Holy Empress. Authorisation understood. Implementation imminent. Over and out.”

As the call ended, Robert reached the Imperial Palace. He ran up to the closest way in, a side entrance where the guards quickly opened the door as they recognised who it was running at full speed towards them. Robert made his way through empty hallways in the vast palace until he reached the entrance to the library. Coming to a full stop, resting for two seconds and then opening the doors to the library, Robert calmly walked in to find Prince Andrew Sebastian searching a bookshelf close to the entrance.

“Your Imperial and Royal Highness. I come on a most grave matter. My apologies.” Robert took a quick look around, confirming they were alone. “A threat has been made to Your Imperial and Royal Highness’ life. We are treating this with the utmost seriousness. The Holy Empress asks that Your Imperial and Royal Highness be secured. I advice that we move immediately to a secure location in Malmund.”

“Malmund?”, Andrew asked. “Does that mean…?” His voice trailed off.

“Yes, I regret to inform Your Imperial and Royal Highness that this threat extends to His Royal Highness the Grand Duke of Oconia. He is in His office and I have ordered the First Department to make sure nothing happens to Him. I will soon make the call and have Him properly secured. Shall we?”

Andrew nodded, at the moment failing to react to what he was told.

Robert lead the way into the back of the library. He grabbed hold of a bookshelf and opened it, because in addition to being a bookshelf, it was also a door. The Chancellor and the Prince made their way down the secret hallway. Robert, as if he had never spent his time anywhere else, opened the door to a spiral stone staircase going down. As the two started descending the stairs, Robert picked up his phone again.

“Yes, Sir?”, Christian answered.

“Connect me to the person securing Oconia.”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Hello?”, someone answered.

“This is Chancellor Jones. Major Red, Oconia. I repeat, Major Red, Oconia. Proceed to nearest secure location.”

“Understood, Sir.”

“Over and out.” Robert called the Vice-Chancellor again.

“Yes, Sir?”

“Major Red, Cox and Oconia. General Yellow, yesterday. Talk to Yellows. Consult Fourth, if Clean House, go to Second Bedroom and talk to House. Talk to Bench.”

“Understood, Sir”, the Vice-Chancellor replied, a bit taken a back by these orders.

“Over and out”, Robert said and ended the call. He and the Prince had now reached the bottom of the staircase. They had reached the secret underground station under the Imperial Palace. Robert went up to the empty, dark train and accessed the external control panel, allowing him to turn on the electricity and open the doors.

“Your Imperial and Royal Highness could take a seat in the suite”, Robert said, the rhyme not intended.

“Yes, I see…”, Andrew said, but added: “If it is all the same to you, could I join you in the control room instead?”

“Of course”, Robert replied and smiled a bit, liking how the Prince opted out of comfort for control. It would however have been closer to the truth to understand the request as the Prince not wanting to be alone.

Meanwhile, in Oconia…

The Palace, Malmund, The Grand Duchy of Oconia, The Holy Empire of Coxnord

Christopher had been surprised when First Department personnel had come to his office, citing orders to see to it that he was safe. But oh well, probably that paranoid Chancellor Jones up to something again. The Grand Duke was not going to let such a thing distract him as he was working on his wedding vows. Christopher was used to giving speeches and writing them himself, but not about such personal things. This would take a lot of time to get done, properly done. He could not deny being a perfectionist and while that did not make him the most efficient worker, people were always satisfied with his results.

A phone rang. What was that signal? That was not any phone Christopher used. One of the ‘Deppies’, as they were colloquially known, took up and answered a mobile phone.

“Hello?” Pause. “Understood, Sir.” The man pocketed his phone and turned to Christopher. “Your Royal Highness, I am afraid I have bad news.”

“Oh?” Christopher did not know what else to say.

“There has been a threat to Your Royal Highness’ life. The Holy Empress asks that we move to a secure location.”

“You mean under ground?” Christopher knew very well what location the Deppy was most likely talking about.

“Yes.”

Christopher did not say anything further. What was this threat? Why exactly was he being hidden? Probably useless to ask these Chancery minions such questions, they were on a need-to-know basis and Christopher himself probably had higher security clearance than they did. The group started moving towards the facility underneath the Palace.

All over The Holy Empire of Coxnord

Per Chancellor Jones’ orders, everyone in the Imperial and Royal Families and a few select others received constant supervision by the First Department of the Third Section of HI&RAM Own Chancery.

“Okay, so what’s the plan?”

“The plan is this: we go to Coxnord. Wait for the Queen Dowager to arrive, and during the wedding, kill her, and the two gays.”

“Never like homos.” Spits

“Doesn’t really matter, just as long as we do deliver our mess—”

The doors are bursted opened. And a several Vulshainian police officers and Confederate Marshals come filing in. “Freeze! Get on the ground now!”

Three of the four men do as they’re told. The fourth one tries to fight back, only to get shot in the shoulder. He and his compatriots are immediately handcuffed.

“You four are under arrest for the murder of Dr. Nigel Felix Ivor as well as threatening the lives of Queen Dowager Anatansya Olekalexein, Prince Andrew Sebastian of Anisia and Cunula, Duke of Cox, and Grand Duke Christopher Andrew of Oconia.”

Dear Chancellor Catherine Decker, Head of the Second Section of HI&RAM Own Chancery, The Holy Empire of Coxnord,

I wish to inform you that the four men who had murdered Dr. Nigel Felix Ivor and who also threatened the lives of Queen Dowager Anatansya Olekalexein, Prince Andrew Sebastian of Anisia and Cunula, Duke of Cox, and Grand Duke Christopher Andrew of Oconia, have all been arrested.  One of them was a high-ranking member of the Republican Freedom Army.  The four of them will most likely face the death penalty.  I believe two of them will get the electric chair, one will be hung, and the other one will be executed by firing squad.

I apologize for any worries that these traitors and anti-royalists caused you and your people.

Sincerely,

Director-Commissioner Ignacja Nonna Nastasia of the Constabulary of the Confederate Marshals of the Confederacy of Vulshain

P.S. Send my best wishes and congratulations to the happy grooms!

“Thank you Ignacja! You have–ouch!–relieved that makes—ow!—me. Huh? Pain? No----ow! ouch!—I’m fineeeeeee–owwwww!” Anatansya stopped talking for a bit as she glared at the tailor.

“Sorry your Majesty,” he said. Anatansya sighed. She hated the dress. She didn’t like the color, but the tailor/fashion designer said he knew what he was talking about. “Just my luck that Riccardo Pharamond Feofil is on break,” the Queen Dowager thought to herself. “I have to go now–ouch!-!” She hung up. “Are you trying to take my tail off with pins!?”

“Sorry—”

“No no no! That outfit will certainly not do!” Riccardo Pharamond Feofil came in and quickly got to work.

In a few hours, the Queen Dowager’s outfit was ready and she was wearing it. “It will certainly amazed your hosts, your Majesty!”

Anatansya was just as stunned. Her silver and blue outfit was a long gown decorated with shimmering metallic thread that shimmered and sparkled whenever she moved. It had two detached sleeves on it and it had a magificent satin scarf. The left side of the gown was slit up to the top of the calf, making it easier for her to move. The outfit even showed a little bit of cleavage, and it was a backless dress as well. “Riccardo! You have outdone yourself!”

“Is this everything Your Majesty,” a CPG officer said.

“Yes that should—” She stopped as her ears twitched from hearing someone playing a song on a recorder. “That song…I know that song…”

Using her ears, she followed the music…

Emergency Subterranean Offices, Malmund, The Grand Duchy of Oconia, The Holy Empire of Coxnord

Chancellor Robert Jones was impatiently pacing back and forth across the small, Spartan office, pondering alternative courses of action. The engaged targets were in the Grand Ducal office and living quarters next door. Robert had thought Prince Andrew Sebastian seemed very nervous about the whole situation, while the Grand Duke seemed much more at ease and so had thought it best to leave them alone together to talk about it all after giving them the details of the situation. If they wanted anything, they knew exactly where they would find the Chancellor.

Robert felt something against his leg. Vibrations? As he lost focus and his mind slipped back out to his surroundings, he became aware of the sound as well. His phone was ringing. He picked it up and looked at the screen. It was his fellow Chancellor, Catherine Decker.

“Robert”, he answered.

“This is Catherine. I hope everything is going well. I have received an email from Vulshain that I’d like to send to you. Good news this time.”

“Really?”, Robert said, a bit sceptical about the news actually being good. “Sure, you can send it to me and I’ll read it on my phone. I’ll call you back.”

“Great. Bye for now then.”

“Bye.” Robert hung up and accessed his email on the phone. After a few seconds, the message forwarded by Catherine showed up in his inbox.

Robert could not help but smile as he read the message from Vulshain. He went over to the door leading in to the Grand Ducal office and living quarters and knocked.

“Come in”, the Grand Duke’s voice replied after a second or two.

Robert entered the much larger room which was, for all intents and purposes, a one-room apartment. Not really suitable for a Grand Duke, but this was the emergency location under ground after all, so there had not been luxury afforded when creating it. Andrew and Christopher were sitting on a red couch, each with a glass of what looked like cola with a slice of lime. Robert guessed there was also some kind of alcohol in there.

“Your Imperial and Royal Highness, Your Royal Highness, there has been a positive development. I have just received word from the Constabulary of the Confederate Marshals of the Confederacy of Vulshain that the terrorists have been apprehended. The Director-Commissioner sends her best wishes and congratulations. If I may be excused, I shall recommend The Holy Empress to downgrade the alert level.”

“Of course. Thank you, Chancellor”, Christopher said and looked at his fiancé."

Robert made the call.

“Yes, Robert?”, Anne asked, seeming glad that he called.

“My Holy Empress, authorisation requested to Abort Major Red, Cox and Oconia. I repeat, authorisation requested to Abort Major Red, Cox and Oconia. Motivation, quoting message from Vulshain: terrorists arrested. Authorisation requested.”

“Authorisation granted!”, Anne quickly responded with joy.

“Authorisation understood.”

“Are they…?” Anne hesitated, it was not good protocol to ask Robert where they were. “Is there any reason why we should not go to Malmund?”

“Not that I can see, My Holy Empress”, Robert responded with a smile, taking the hint. “I’ll make sure My Holy Empress is welcomed in the Palace.”

“Splendid! See you there.”

“As My Holy Empress wishes”, Robert said as the call ended. “Your Imperial and Royal Highness, Your Royal Highness, we can move back up now. The Holy Empress has decided to visit the Palace as soon as possible.”

The fiancés’ faces lit up, they finished their drinks and followed Robert en route to the surface.

“Catherine”, Robert said as he called back his fellow Chancellor. “Major Red has been aborted. I trust it you will take care of our communications with Vulshain.”

“Of course. Happy to hear it.”

The next call was to Vice-Chancellor Christian Lund.

“Terrorists arrested, Major Red aborted. Make a wake-up call to Vulshain though. We need to watch these Republicans.”

“Understood, Sir.”
