[spoiler]A vast nation in the far north, Älemsi quite literally means “The world” in its people’s native tongue. And indeed the endless expanses of the island may as well have been the entire universe for the nomadic herders who settled these lands. These groups were often fiercely independent, and where sheer distance and harsh wilderness could not separate them, wars over herds and grazing lands were a common affair. For much of Älemsi history the sole unifying factor was in the form of their shamanic religious traditions. A rudimentary priesthood played an important role in the early governance of and diplomacy between tribes, aided by the fact that it was at least in theory a commonly held anathema to harm or hinder such figures. At the center of these early religious traditions was the Line of Yul, which ruled over the first fixed settlements on the island which served as neutral grounds and early centers of urban services for those travelling the wilds. Though the origins of the Yul extends to before the first written histories on the island(official mythology that they were descended from the Lords of Sky and Earth may be taken with a shovelful of salt), the dynasty served as the primary religious figures on the island, and were at least nominally owed a measure of obeisance from the various Älemsi polities.

As much as the Yul might have embodied a sense of common civilization on Älemsi, it would not be them who brought true unity to the island. That role would fall to the powerful horselords of the islands’ central steppes. Once as factitious as any other, they would be brought together under Khagan Menggetu Sartak in the 13th century, and would soon afterwards rise to dominate their neighbors through the use of their powerful cavalry. It would certainly be far from a peaceful matter, but when the armies of the Khagan finally reached the city of Amrakh Gazarv, Sartak simply offered his respects to the reigning Yul of the time. Thus, by ruling through the Yul, the Khagan effectively legitimized his control of Älemsi, and became the island’s first true conquerer.

The unity of Älemsi and the power of the Khagans would wax and wane over the centuries, but the central authority that had been built would never truly be undone, especially as growing trade through the Nosalis Sea brought external visitors and threats to the sparsely populated island even as it prompted the development of ports and outposts along its coasts. While the true power lay with the title of Khagan and would change hands across individuals and tribes on several occasions, the tradition of ruling through the Yul would become a matter of tradition. The Khaganate system would finally be dismantled in the early 20th century, when the increasingly active Line of Yul finally retook practical political power. In a move towards modernity, a written constitution would finally be introduced, though it in many ways preserved existing structures of power with loose central authority. The Grand Mazhilis represented the eclectic tribes, chiefdoms, and growing townships, each of which were allowed their own methods of selecting representatives. Their chosen Speaker effectively acted as a head of government, while the reigning Yul continued as a head of state, with various ceremonial and reserve powers along with considerably influence as a personification of the nation. Thus, Älemsi Negdel was born.

By the 21st century, Älemsi was enjoying the fruits of its vast natural resources. The handful of cities that dotted the coastlines would become remarkably well developed with nascent growth in the technology and services sectors. Yet, the heart of the nation remained as it always had, an expansive and isolated wilderness, populated only by the moving herds and those who tended to them.
