Historical Summary:

The Tzitades of Arlavia, while certainly no late conquest of the Celanor Empire, was one which retained a distinct cultural identity within it, and one which only further asserted itself as equals as Celanora declined. Inspired by the Radical ideas blooming in West Novaris at the time, the Arlavian Revolt of 1848, one of numerous historical rebellions, established itself as an autonomous entity within Celanora, electing its own Senate.

During the Great War, the Arlavian Senate voted against participation, arguing that intervention in the war would be too much a sacrifice to support the Tretridians, and thus they ordered the Arlavian Units to refuse to be deployed outside of Arlavia. As the war dragged on, so too did the strain of relations between Arlavia and Celanora. Unable to expend resources to deal with another revolt, Celanora attempted to force a treaty which would grant independence to Arlavia if they would fight in the Great War.

While a majority of the Senate remained uneasy about the decision, the Arlavian Military, sympathetic to the National Radicals, declared in favour - thus overthrowing the Senate and replacing them with the Pro-Military Government of the Arlavian Confederacy.

While the Confederacy would be reorganised and the military government removed from office by 1921 - unable to deal with a now war weary population further pushed to action against the state by the poor state of the post-war economy, the Confederated Tzitades of Arlavia remained an independent republic, drifting towards Tretrid as conflict once again began to brew amongst the powers of West Novaris.

Additional Notes:

These are not mandatory to read, but I do want to express that I have put effort into this claim so that it may be enough to justify why exactly I am going against my previous intentions of not claiming another country solo.

1 The word Arlavia, most commonly used in deriving exonym terms for the nation, originates from the conquest of the land by the Celanor Empire. The name Arlavia means “land of the Arlavi” in Norvian, the Celanor name for the native people, from the Proto-Arlavian Írlāvé. Due to the dramatic changes the Arlavian language underwent during their subjugation by the Celanor Empire, there is considerable debate amongst etymologists regarding the true original meaning of Írlāvé, though the two most common theories point to it as meaning “Those of the Western Riverbank” or “Those of the riverside where the Sun falls”, dependant on the debated subject of the use of body-relative directions and cardinal directions in Pre-Celanor Arlavia.

2 The phrase’s full wording is often argued as it was passed down through oral history, however the agreed meaning of the whole is to say that one must make the most of every moment they get in their life to fulfil their desires and help those who need it, no matter their status or background. Because in the end, the process of decomposing in the dirt refuses to treat anyone differently - no matter wealth or virtue.

3 “We Will Never March For You” is a canto written by Captain Lorenzo Serra, an Arlavian military official who wrote the piece during his service in the Great War, with Sidore Nazzari providing the music for which it is set to - originally composed as "La Freccia Spezzata’’ (The Broken Arrow). The piece is most notable as the National Anthem of Arlavia from 1926, previously acting as the de facto anthem between 1914 and 1919, as well as again between 1921 and 1926. The piece was written in 1910 during the Arlavian Defiance as a refute to the war poem “To Arms We Call”, though Nazzari’s original composition dates back to 7 May 1878. Throughout the 20th Century, the anthem has been a topic of considerable contention within the country itself, with a vocal minority arguing that it no longer represents the nation as it is now following its independence. While there have been a number of political efforts to change the anthem, the lack of significantly popular patriotic songs performed in the Arlavian language - a requirement for the anthem according to the Constitution - has weakened the argument for change.

4 Heads of state, elected through the Arlavian electoral college in which elected delegates from each Tszaide vote based upon an STV system, with delegates allocated as such - based upon the 1921 Census (Arlavian Electoral College - Google Tabellen)

5 Serraism, named for Captain Lorenzo Serra, describes the form of liberal radicalism which formed Arlavia as an independent state. It posits that the creation and perpetuation of the Celanor Empire has created a false identity for which to subdue groups with a valid right to self-determination.
