Avatar

Not seen it yet, kind of want to, kind of can’t be bothered…

Here we are…

“But that record no longer stands thanks to Avatar - also directed by Cameron - which this week stole its crown as the all-time global box office champ, with receipts of $1.859bn (£1.15bn).”

Bai Lung can now start the celebration party!

About Dann… wow. My wife always complain we never go to the cinema… now I can show her anoher dimension of “never”… :stuck_out_tongue:

I guess you could say part of the problem is I don’t really watch that many live action films anymore. And any I do watch I prefer to do so using DVD or Bluray. That and the fact I prefer Anime now to live action. It puts me in a bizarre situation compared to my peers.

You’ll have a wife, sooner or later… of the sentence above, you’ll have the chance to say just “I guess you could say part of the problem is I don’t” and then she’ll start crying that when you were flirting you’d have brought her to the cinema and you do not love her anymore and she and you and you’re a monster…

… and then you’ll re-start appreciating the cinema. At least, there she’ll have to shut up!

Avatar still needs to beat Titanic’s $600 million in the US box office.

it hasnt yet?

Well about $66 million short?

Also there are conflicting reports about why the Chinese release of Avatar was pulled out. Some sources say it is because of the politics, others suggest that the 2D version was pulled out because of lack of revenue, others say the 2D version was pulled out to make way for a movie about Confucius. What is going on?

The only amazing thing this movie can claim to have was Stephen Lang’s performance as Colonel Quaritch. Other than that. Sub par.

I agree that his acting was top-notch.

Other things I liked a lot were the imagery and the soundtrack.

P.S. Avatar means teacher, Jesus was an avatar. It has nothing to do with bending earth, air, or metal.

Not likely. I’m single and I have been for all my life. If there isn’t a woman out there who does not share my dislike of the cinema, so be it. That is how life is and that is what will happen.

An avatar is an incarnation of a deity - it usually crops up in Hinduism, which is chock full of mythic examples, although on that note Jesus would fit the bill (though not for the reasons you give). It’s a Sanskrit word meaning “descent” or much more literally “coming [down] from far away”. The film does a nice job with that concept, although whether it’s an example or a subversion is up to you.

You are totally right, I just kept my definition in the terms of a layman.

Avatar just reached the $600 million mark in the US and Canada a few days ago.

Yes, Avatar is the #1 film of all-time.

Might as well mention I only saw the standard version. Debating about seeing it again in 3D. Tickets cost twice as much, a cool 13usd.

its worth it - i couldnt imagine it in 2d

It costs £7.40 ($11.52) to watch the 3D version of Avatar at Cineworld. If you are watching the earliest screening.

P.S Shocking news! Avatar has been dethroned by another film this week, A romantic drama called Dear John. It grossed $30 million this weekend.

Hasn’t it been playing for over 15 weeks? Weekend sales don’t really mean a whole lot.

This movie is still in theaters? It was so bad!

I thought that if you considered inflation and what not, Gone with the Wind is still the biggest money maker at box office. Might have got my facs wrong though.
