Historical Summary:

Emerging as fledgling powers in 534 AD near the coastlines of- and on islands of the northern Gulf of Gondwana, the arres al-Kazi and chasm al-Azizi Houses served as client states to the Celan Empire, a polity that stretched towards the Gulf of Gondwana. Allying together to further their maritime trade and conquests, the Houses sought help from the Celan Empire to expand towards the center of the Gulf, the larger island of modern day Celannica, Isical, in exchange for further integration and greater tributes. Allegedly, the Celan Emperor was only persuaded by his Balatro-a living mythic figure most famously known as the Thousand Year Trickster-mocking the quality of his fleet, and being executed afterwards.

Following the First to Fourth Celan invasions of Isical in the late-500s to middle 600’s, the islands were split under the Dual-Hegemonic System—a governance model wherein the al-Kazi and al-Azizi Houses jointly ruled together under two Celan-appointed Ethnarchs, or colloquially known as Monarchs. Intended by the Celan Empire to keep the houses in a perpetual cycle of power struggles and thus dependency on them, the Monarchs instead broke off from the Celan Empire in the late 900s following the empire’s crippling civil war. Eventually, the Celan Empire ceased to be a dependable power, losing its other client states such as the ros al-Aboud and zuls al-Qisma Houses under the influence of the al-Kazi and al-Azizi Houses.

However, planning on conquering and subjugating the client states outright, the al-Kazi and al-Azizi Monarchs were instead approached by the seemingly revived Celan Balatro, the Trickster. Claiming deep knowledge of Esotericism and touch of “Divine-cursed Essence” allowed Him to escape death, He divined another option. He argued that they should evolve the Dual-Hegemonic System into the Ethnarchy-System, in which the most influential houses, families, or clans of each ethnicity allow one of their own to become a Monarch or Monarchess of their ethnic people, then jointly stand by the al-Kazi and al-Azizi side as equals on paper. In exchange in helping to facilitate this new system, He wished to depart his Esoteric knowledge on the wider populace, as well as occupy the position as their new Balatro-Court Mage. Following several successful executions of the Trickster yet coming back with near-exact same mind and memories despite different bodies, the Monarchs reluctantly agreed.

By the turn of the millennium, the Trickster started His centuries-long fixture in the monarch’s politics, culture, and myth. Bestowing on their populace esoteric knowledge such as alchemy, astrology, and oral transmissions of various Gondwanan literatures, their people became deeply ingrained in spiritual and superstitious traditions and lore, their native religion, Auraism, heavily influenced by the Trickster’s Worldview. A worldview that is proto-absurdist and similar to panentheism, inconsistent, thick in Esotericism and Occultism, and vibrant in life affirmations. Therefore, partly influencing the Trickster’s eccentric and sometimes psychotic behavior. Yet, never actively involved in structuring or guiding religious or political movements beyond moving against those disrupting the political harmony of the Ethnarchy-System.

Additionally, the Trickster helped the Dual-Hegemonic System evolve into the Tripartite Kingdom, then the Quadripartite Kingdom, and finally the Dominion of Duominzu. It grew to an increasingly complex polity wherein the number of Monarchs—each representing ethnicities or species under their hegemony—expanded to over 10, though for much of its history, al-Kazi and al-Azizi Houses held most of the real power. In its final iteration, Duominzu adopted a Semi-Constitutional Elective Directorial-system Ethnarchy, a hybrid model where each Monarch could ascend to the role of Monarch or Monarchess through election from their own house, holding both national authority and ethnocultural stewardship. This arrangement followed the long tradition of precarious but resilient balance of power, with each Monarch acting as both sovereign and sentinel, maintaining equilibrium to preserve the Dominion’s political harmony.

It should be noted that over the centuries, sanctioned trials and tortures, independent investigations, and divinations have attempted to explain what exactly the Trickster is. These explanations range from superstitions alleging the Trickster being a mythological “Spiteful Angel” walking on Urth or an Immortal Soul possessing mortal bodies to inhabit, to a social phenomenon of insane yet entertaining albinos assuming the identity of the Trickster with the Monarchs endorsing one of them as the “real” Trickster, or to conspiracy theories alleging the al-Kazi and/or al-Azizi Houses propping up the “Institution of the Trickster” to preserve their status quo. Despite centuries of evidence and testimonies gathered, lost, rediscovered, or destroyed, none of them, without a shadow of a doubt, can explain what He is.

Regardless of the truth, there are multiple death records, urns, and even corpses attributed to Him—most official, others traced back to the mainlands of Gondwana. Yet, no matter how many times He dies, the Trickster always returns: near-same mind, wit, and memories. Between supposed reincarnations, He has reappeared across spectrums of adult bodies, sexes, ethnicities, and even species—once as a human, twice as a feline, and thrice as a vulpine. This phenomenon has come to be known as the Line of a Thousand Faces, a title both revered and feared.

Yet, despite the Trickster’s reputation and the concentration of power within the Ethnarch-System, this centuries old system ultimately died at the Crimson Rose Revolution of 1904, a popular uprising led by disgruntled princes and princesses of the various Ethnarchies. Inspired by outside philosophies that condemned monarchical systems as tyrannical and esotericism as outdated superstitions, both used to explain the decline of Duominzu as a struggling power in the last three centuries, they abdicated their titles and overthrew the Dominion to establish the Freed Crowned Republic of Isical, turning the Monarchs into mere ceremonial figureheads, and exiled the Trickster as a constructed figurehead of the Monarchs. His failure to reappear and reassert Himself seemingly self-evident. And for a time, the Abdicators worked in earnest to model their Republic along democratic and liberal values.

However, in-fighting between these Abdicators, legislative gridlock, terrorist attacks from non-aurian nationalists across the Crowned Republic, and failure to re-integrate territories that broke away in the last three centuries led to the 1917 Zetta Coup launched by the Field Marshal, Akira Zetta, and his father, General Zetta. They outright dismantled the entire Crowned Republic and Ethnarchy-System, and all of the Abdicators, Monarchs, and anyone else carrying the blood of their Houses or supporters were either executed in masse or forced to flee Gondwana.

Replacing the Houses and Monarchs in favor of the Zetta Imperial Family and the self-crowned God Emperor, Akira Zetta, Isical underwent a radical transformation into a totalitarian fascist state. Declaring themselves as successors of the ancient Celan Empire, the Empire of Celannica under Akira was ambitious, desiring to turn Celannica into a superpower at the heart of Gondwana. Spearheading multiple yet costly project-rapidly expanding the navy, researching and constructing nuclear facilities and bombs, and “absolute urbanization and modernization” of Isical- his vision for Celannica collapsed in 1964 once Akira suddenly fell into a coma and died from a stroke.

General Zetta declared himself the new Emperor afterwards, yet he quickly devolved into extreme paranoia. Following his gross abuse of power and mass executions against real and imaginary foes, a civil war broke out between General Zetta, various factions of the military, and the Second Wave of Crimson Rose Revolutionaries. In 1972, two major events unfolded: General Zetta was assassinated by his daughter, Kukiko Zetta, who seized control of his remnants, and the Trickster finally returning to Isical with a mercenary army. Throwing His support behind one of the larger military factions, He used His army and a combination of blackmail, intimidation, and charisma to force the warring factions to cease fire, and eventual peace talks at the City of Jama in 1975.

However, the entirety of Celannica was shaken when a atomic bomb was set off at Jama, collapsing the city and killing all the faction leaders but Akira. Coming back and condemning Akira for setting off the atomic bomb through the use of the Zetta’s nuclear program, the Trickster quickly rallied support around Himself, warning of the threat of Akira setting off more atomic bombings, and continuing the war until 1977 when she ultimately fled. Unifying Celannica under Himself, the Trickster declared His mission to search for the Monarch House members that managed to flee the Zetta’s executions, bring them back home, and restore the Ethnarchy-System.

Since that day, the Trickster has reign over Celannica as the self-proclaimed Provesional Regent, sparing no expense in searching around the globe, awaiting the day the Ethnarchs will return home and take up their empty thrones. Until then, He will continue his efforts in rebuilding Celannica back to His reactionary vision, His eccentricities both a blessing and a curse as Celannnica’s undisputed leader…
