NUMBERS

Decimal point
The decimal point is a period.

Definition of a billion
Billion = 1000 million

System of measurement
Standard metric measurement system

How date is written
Day/Month/Year

RACE

Variety of races / attitudes about race & foreigners
Two main ethnicities, Kfalme and Sahibu. Sahibu occupy mainly the south of Furnifold, Kfalme occupy mainly the north of Furnifold. There are other minorities, but these two comprise over three-quarters of the total population. Foreigners are welcome everywhere, as there usually are not a great number of visitors to the country

You make jokes about…
Anything is fair game, but most people recognize when they’ve gone too far, and will apologize

POLITICS

Political parties
Political parties coalesce around ideas and public figures, resemble a “cult of personality”

Attitude toward Socialism & Communism
Depends on where Furnifoldians live. In the southern rural areas, they are much more right-wing. In the cities, there are generally people more favorable to socialism, but this is just a generalization

Does the government listen to you?
If you have a lot of money, have military connections, or are part of the government public service system, yes. Otherwise, no, unless a Senator takes an interest in you or your cause

Can problems be solved?
Yes, with significant political and business involvement, and possibly foreign involvement included

If a politician cheats on his wife…
It’s a scandal, but it does not always result in government upheaval

Military involvement with government
Intertwined, but not in the public eye. The military is the main source of stability for the regime

Freedom of speech, patriotism, royalty, changing names, misc.
All people have the right to speak freely, as it is ridiculous to enforce. People generally are not patriotic, and instead just wish to be able to provide for themselves and for their family. No royalty, which is interesting as Kfalme means “Royal” in Codexian.

ECONOMICS

Utilities & companies: public or private
Utilities are public, companies are private

Inflation & unemployment
Unemployment is high, inflation is not high due to the system being pegged to the South Hills Dollar. Generally SHD is accepted over Furnifold’s system of currency.

Taxes
Average tax rate is 17%, and even with a progressive tax, generally the rich pay about this much too. Companies are not taxed, but their daily business is taxed, called duty taxes. Most government service taxes are around 12% (import and export fees, income, extraction fees etc.)

Variety of items for sale, haggling
Besides food, there is not too much for sale that people can afford. This is not the case in some cities. Haggling is very common in rural areas, but not as common in cities, besides within the informal economy

Credit cards
Used by the rich, but generally people use other methods of payment

Inheritance
Bequethal is common, but very informal. Sometimes this results in domestic issues

SOCIAL WELFARE

Attitudes toward social security, welfare programs, unemployment payments, medical assistance, charitable aid
People are in favor of it, but wish that more could be done. There just is not a lot of money or other assistance coming in

INTERNATIONAL

Knowledge of world capitals & leaders
Depends on how much schooling, where people went to school, and how they retained the information. The people care more about the cultures of these other countries than their leaders

Attitudes toward the other countries of the East Pacific
Because of shared relgions, most are favorable of Pax, and therefore, wary of Vekaiyu. Kuthernburg has had a long history intertwined with Furnifold, and generally people are favorable of the country. For all other countries, it depends on what interaction they have had with Furnifold, and in what context

Has your country been conquered?
No, surprisingly. Once upon a time Furnifold possessed a strong navy and was a world power, but it quickly collapsed and shifted back to internal affairs.

Wars
Furnifold has been in numerous wars throughout its history, but it has recently fulfilled a small aspect instead of being involved in all aspects

LAW AND CRIME

Court system & lawsuits
Generally avoided, unless there is a lot of money or serious crimes involved. People just do not want to have to deal with the court system

Bribes
Very very common, especially in cities. Even with the government attempting to crack down on it, there is still a massive informal economy built around bribes

Police & gun ownership
Police officers carry weapons, but less than ten percent of officers carry guns. An even fewer number of citizens carry guns. The only rampant gun ownership comes from those involved in the military or the national guard

Dangerous places
Most areas can be unsafe, but people operate communally and will not tolerate rabble-rousers. Recently the southwest of Furnifold has seen more violence due to political turmoil

Lawyers
The law profession is a venerable one, but one that very few Furnifoldians actually go into. Only a small amount of public defenders, and most large companies snatch up the lawyers upon their graduation

EDUCATION

History you learned
History was taught in school, but mainly national history, with the exception of the history of Pax and Kuthernburg

Cost of school
School is free, colleges are not

College
College is variable, depends on the program, but generally between three and six years. Upon graduation from highschool (at age 16) students spend two to three years either in an apprenticeship to learn trades, working or interning for businesses, or taking college preparation courses for specific majors to go into

EMPLOYMENT

Are you a farmer?
The majority of them are, especially in the north in the Carrington Plains

Can you be fired?
Yes, and for the most trivial of reasons

Labor day and other holidays
There are a few Furnifold holidays throughout the year. Most people do not take them

Appointments, punctuality, negotiating
Being late is very common, especially if it involves traveling. Punctuality is very important, but it is not uncommon to be late. People try to negotiate as much as possible, but likely because of power differences, that does not happen

TRANSPORTATION

Which side of the road / traffic lights / pedestrian safety
Right side of the road, standard traffic lights, pedestrians are generally safe because cars are not driven as much, but cross at their own risk

Taxis
Taxis have a limited range in the large cities and to airports, besides that, most people take trains to go longer distances

Quality of public transportation, trains, buses, planes
Trains are very good, but these are more freight rails for transporting cargo versus public transit. Therefore, travelling along these routes is the best way to travel, and there are a good number of passengers hitching rides on these transit routes. The bus system is very small without a lot of funding by the government, most companies in cities charter buses for their employees. There are three airports in Furnifold, near McLendal, Boonefield, and the twin cities of Chonvor City and Woolf

RELATIONSHIPS

First names & forms of address
Sir and Ma’am are used, as well as first and last names interchangeably. One of the interesting things about Furnifold is that people call each other nicknames, usually based on some physical or mental characteristic, and these names are adopted by some individuals instead of their first or last name

Arranged marriages & wedding customs
There are very informal arranged marriages in the rural areas of Furnifold, but for the most part, people legitimately get married. Many times, couples are married for months or years before actually making their way to a government office to be made official. Weddings are communal affairs, especially in rural areas. People in cities usually leave to go back to the countryside for their weddings

Importance of family background & social status
Family background is not as important, with the exception of military or government jobs, in which nepotism runs rampant. For the most part, it is a matter of education and motivation to work that determines status. Money is very important though, and being able to afford property puts people in the higher class of society

Preferences of physical appearance
Tall and lanky for men is culturally preferred, with little to no facial hair. Women who are also tall are considered fine specimens, but typical bust and hip beauty standards are more culturally important

Sexuality & attitudes toward homosexuality
Depends on the family and the community. The government for the most part does not pass social laws

Relations with family / visiting / misc.
Families are large and live together, and the concept of a polite visit is not in the system. Most people just show up near each other

AT HOME

Things in your house
Most people have a landline telephone, more so in the north versus the south. Cell phone usage is common in cities, and is beginning to make an appearance in the south. There are few, if any, smartphones though. Internet and home computers are in a minority of homes, but many companies allow for their employees to spend time after work on the internet. For those that have internet, dial-up is most common, but DSL is starting to be installed. Most people have other home appliances (fridge, though it may be small, stove), and a majority have televisions. Cars are uncommon, and usually multiple households share cars and computers

Bathroom
Depending on the households, most of the time inside the house with showers and toilets, otherwise it will be outside

Telephone
Home phones in rural areas, cell phones in cities, very small minority own smartphones

Climate
Humid subtropical in the southwest and northeast, arid and semi arid in the southeast, savannah in the northwest

What you won’t eat (and odd things you will)
Most Furnifoldians are vegetarians, or eat meat very rarely

How you eat & local cuisine
Shoulder to shoulder with other people. Fancy restaurants are very rare, and very expensive. Only the elite go there

Fast food & restaurants
Fast food and more typical restaurants are located in tourist areas

Packaging
Plastic is somewhat rare, most of the time paper or tin/aluminum is used

HEALTH

Quality of healthcare & national health insurance
While healthcare is free for all people, many people do not have adequate access to healthcare facilities, and many times doctors and nurses are paid under the table for proceedures

Attitudes toward doctors
Doctors are well respected, but people are generally afriad of them due to knowing they have to pay much more than they would think for treatment. Seeing a doctor is sometimes seen as the beginning of the end

RELIGION

Major religions & attitudes toward them

Most things are joked about, especially Alcohol, Kilkirian stereotypes, or especially yourself.
There are many things that are off limits, such as a tragic event, or jokes at the expense of a group, that go beyond impersonal fun. There is a general unspoken rule about jokes in Kilkire, that goes something like this; “If you wouldn’t make it about yourself, don’t make it about other people.”
