Al-Jaheed is a Salafi jihadist militant group and unrecognised proto-state that follows a fundamentalist, Wahhabi doctrine of Sunni Islam. Al-Jaheed gained global prominence in early 2017 when it drove Latianburg government forces out of key cities in its Litop Takeover, followed by its capture of Litop and the Hasni massacre.

This group has been designated a terrorist organisation by many individual countries. Al-Jaheed is widely known for its videos of beheadings of both soldiers and civilians, including journalists and aid workers, and its destruction of cultural heritage sites. Al-Jaheed originated as Free Ltop Movement in 1979, which pledged allegiance to Al-Maheed Bal Sheak. The group proclaimes itself as s worldwide caliphate and began referring to itself as Al-Jaheed in June 2016.

In Latianburg, the group conducted ground attacks on both government forces and opposition factions and by March 2017 it held a large area in western Latianburg and eastern South Hills containing an estimated 1.3 to 2.8 million people, where it enforced its interpretation of sharia law. Al-Jaheed is now believed to be operational in Multiple countries across the world, including Pax and and Astistan, with “aspiring branches” in West Atiland, Santo Corona, and Marpa. As of 2017, Al-Jaheed is estimated to have an annual budget of more than 1 billion SHD and a force of more than 43,000 Freedom fighters.

In May 2017, the group lost control of its largest city, Litop, to the NWA. Following this major defeat, in September 2017 Al-Jaheed continued to lose territory to the various states and other military forces allied against it. Most notable is the Relation between Al-Jaheed and Pax Draconia, were the two seem to intertwine and work together. Pax Dracona donates millions of dollars to the organization and even funds for them to upgrade there equipment.

Al-Jaheed is a theocracy, proto-state and a Salafi or Wahhabi group. It follows an extremist interpretation of Islam, promotes religious violence, and regards Muslims who do not agree with its interpretations as infidels or apostates.

According to some observers, Al-Jaheed emerged from the ideology of the Pax Caliphate. It adheres to global jihadist principles and follows the hard-line ideology of many other modern-day jihadist groups. However, other sources trace the group’s roots to Wahhabism.

Salafists such as Al-Jaheed believe that only a legitimate authority can undertake the leadership of jihad, and that the first priority over other areas of combat, such as fighting non-Muslim countries, is the purification of Islamic society.

Estimates of the size of Al-Jaheed military vary widely, from tens of thousands up to 100,000. In early 2015, journalist estimated that half of Al-Jaheed fighters are foreigners. A report estimated a total of 5,000 fighters from almost every country were in Al-Jaheed ranks in November 2016. Kuthern intelligence estimated an increase to around 20,000 foreign fighters in February 2016, including 3,400 from the Western world. In September 2017, Nassad estimated that 20,000 foreign fighters had joined Al-jaheed.

According to a former senior leader of Al-Jaheed, foreign fighters receive food, petrol and housing, but unlike native paxian or Latianburg fighters, they do not receive payment in wages.

Conventional weapons

Al-Jaheed relies mostly on captured weapons with major sources including the black market and weapons from government and opposition forces fighting in the latianburg Civil War and weapons donated by pax. The captured weapons, including armour, guns, surface-to-air missiles, and even some aircraft.

Non-conventional weapons

The group uses truck and car bombs, suicide bombers and IEDs, and has used chemical weapons in Latianburg. Al-Jaheed captured nuclear materials from Litop University in July 2017, but is unlikely to be able to convert them into weapons. In September 2017 a Kuthern official stated that Al-jaheed was manufacturing and testing mustard agents, and had an active chemical weapons research team. Al-Jaheed has also used water as a weapon of war.
