Historical Summary: The area of Gliat Ashkilan has been inhabited since ancient times. In the early 2nd millennium BC, the Gliatic peoples were united under the Empire of Gliat Shea, from which they got their name and from which all succeeding states in the area would claim descent from or claim to be successors of. In the 1700s BC, Ademarism was founded largely as a codification/modification of already existing beliefs and was quickly adopted by the Empire as a whole. After the collapse of Gliat Shea in the 1400s BC and the migration of the proto-Asendavic peoples eastward, many states would rise and fall over the centuries, many proclaiming themselves as successors to Gliat Shea and proclaiming themselves Gliat.

Gliat Ashkilan (then simply Ashkilan) began as a principality in the turn of the 10th century, founded by Grand Prince Zdzisław I, who inherited the land around Koszarun from his father Marek following the division of his kingdom among his children after his death in 892 CE. In 1163, Ashkilan and the other Gliatic states were subjugated by the Alvan Khanate under Gunghris Khan. Following Tugri Khan’s death in 1254, the Gliatic states, temporarily united under the leadership of Grand Prince Zdzisław II, who had been chafing under the rule of the Khanate, revolted, but the rebellion was put down after four years of war, leading to Zdzisław II’s swift execution. The Khanate’s control only truly began to lapse in the 1320s, after which Ashkilan and the other Gliatic states regained de facto independence, though they continued to pay tribute to the Alvan Khanate until the late 1400s.

Following the loss of control by the Alvan Khanate in the 1320s, war resumed among the Gliatic states. Ashkilan, now under the rule of Grand Princess Zdzisław I the Great, daughter of Grand Prince Zdzisław III and granddaughter of Grand Prince Zdzisław II, entered a phase of almost-constant war with its neighbors. This period of warlordism following the loss of control from the Khanate lasted for 30 years, during which Ashkilan absorbed many of its smaller neighbors and came to dominate much of the west of what is now modern Gliat Ashkilan. Following the slow end of the period of warlordism in the 1350s, a general period of peace fell among the Gliatic states. Many smaller states in the east, who were still facing occasional Alvan raids despite paying tribute, banded together in loose alliances to protect against both the Alvan threat and other Gliatic states.

This system of alliances largely prevented war in the east and led to a boom in trade among the various Gliatic principalities, duchies, etc., even among the western states which stayed out of this complex system of leagues in the east. This system persisted for well over a century, and only began to break down in the 1490s after attempts to centralize some of these alliance systems failed due to paranoia by local nobility and the general decline in Alvan raids which had sparked their creation. Ashkilan however, was facing a severe outbreak of the plague at this time, and so was focused on keeping stability within itself rather than expanding its borders. This outbreak of plague, which also killed the reigning Grand Prince and much of his family, led to a succession crisis which lasted until 1507, from which the Tarnowiecki family came to power under Grand Prince Mieczysław II, third-cousin of the previous Grand Prince and also a descendant of Grand Princess Zdzisław I.

During the succession crisis, many of the borderlands of Ashkilan had been seized by foreign powers, but these were regained over a series of war from the 1510s to 1520s, and by the time of Grand Prince Mieczysław II’s death in 1539, Ashkilan had grown to be the predominant power in the west once again, and its eyes were set on the east. Not since 1034 had a single state ruled as Gliat, and many were beginning to already proclaim themselves Gliat to legitimize their rule. Thus the Gliatic Wars began, lasting until 1573 with the proclamation of the Divine Kingdom of Gliat Ashkilan and the crowning of King Zdzisław V.

Compared to many of its neighbors, the Divine Kingdom stayed neutral in the Great War, favoring neither side but maintaining trade with both sides. The current King, Zdzisław IX, began his reign in 1989 at the age of 33 following the death of his father King Kazimierz IV.
