Alyona Petrovavich had just sent Trimola Eknol to Redrugus for the meeting regarding a supercanal, and Petrovavich was preparing for a meeting with a few mining company execs. Apparently, a group of islands contain relatively large deposits of rare earth minerals, and four mining companies headquartered in Kemerovo wish to set up operations in the islands surrounding Avut Isle (where the minerals are located), and requested that Tuvaltastan claim and take control of those islands. (OOC: The Islands are the ones circled in grey and white)

The meeting room had many military officials there, as well as the Executives. In the center was a long table, with the four execs sitting at the far end of it. As Petrovavich entered the room and sat down, one of the Executives stood up, and proclaimed, “Commander Petrovavich, as you may already know, we wish to set up mining operations on the islands surrounding Avut Isle. If you allow this, making smartphones will be much cheaper, as we will have access to the rare earth minerals on said islands. Your military could also set up a few military bases there as well, as I know the navy is looking for places to officially set up camp. Would you allow this, Commander?”

“You make a strong case, sir. This really could boost our economy. What do you think, High-General?”

“I believe this operation could better our nation, and quite possibly the continent. I say we go for it.”

“And you, Colonel?”

“I say we execute this operation, the benefits outweight the drawbacks.”

“Alright, it appears that we are all in agreement. We will begin the operations shortly, Executives.”

Another executive stood up and said, “Thank you Commander. We will of course be careful not to greatly disturb the natural habitats of the area.”[edit_reason]Changed “months” to a more practical “weeks”[/edit_reason]

I have been tooling around with this idea in my mind for a year or so now. When you posted your plan, I decided to go ahead an post this here.

Drakyn is a small zoology research village for these three isles. The zoologists are studying the habitat of the native species of the Pygmy Dragonhawk. A relative of the Common Dragonhawk found in Dragonia. These three isles are the only place on Urth where they are to be found (outside of a couple of zoos).

Common Dragonhawk

Also, a small tourist community has sprung up around Drakyn for amateur hikers, backpackers, and ornithologists to come and see the Pygmy Dragonhawk in their natural habitat.

The three isles have been labeled by Dragonia as: Celyn (top isle, Delyn (middle isle), and Melyn (bottom isle). They have also been called the ‘three sisters’ on occasion by the residents. On the north side of Delyn is where the village of Drakyn is to be found. The village was started 5 years ago, and its infrastructure been built up some since.

All three isles are mountainous and hilly, the only true ‘flatland’ area is where Drakyn is located. Various species of plants and trees call these islands home as well. The trees of the isles are all closely related to the Monterey Pine trees.

Funding for the research is made by the Dragonian Zoological Center as well as donations from the Druidic Church to help offset the costs of the research. Drakyn has almost become self-sufficient which does help alleviate costs somewhat. The electrical needs of the village is met be solar energy. Only electrical run vehicles are being allowed on the isles. Most of the vehicles are quad-bikes and such with a few SUVs all running on electric/solar energy.

The person in charge of the ‘community’ is Dr. Elizebeta McGuire a 58 year old Zoologist specializing in Ornithology. She is very protective of what she considers her ‘home’. She has every plan to living the rest of her life here, studying and protecting her beloved Pygmy Dragonhawks. I picture her in my mind as looking like Sigourney Weaver from ‘Gorillas in the Mist: The Story of Dian Fossey’[edit_reason]verbiage[/edit_reason]

Military HQ in Novokuznetsk, December 20th, 2016

Petrovavich had been thinking about this all night. She of course was very anxious, as it was the first time Tuvaltastan had ever tried increasing borders. She entered the conference room yet again, but this time without the executives there. She quickly masked her anxiousness with confidence, as she always did in public places.

She began, “Alright, so how are we gonna start this expansion? I know of a few ideas, but I want those ideas as fleshed out as they can be.”

Lieutenant Trevolon Rictov spoke up, saying, “Well, one of the plans included the use of subterrenes to tunnel to the islands.”

“Details, Lieutenant!”

“W-well, we would dispatch the subterrenes as soon as possible. The ETA would be about 3 months.”

“3 months? Alright, that plan is out. Next!”

This time, Colonel Woltovilov Kernol stood up and continued the discussion: “Naval vessels would be another option for getting to the islands, Commander. That would take between 3-5 Hours. Aircraft would be the only other option, which would be difficult, considering the size of the islands and the lack of open space.”

“Good point, Colonel. I must let you all know that you did a terrible job at fleshing out ideas, but I figured as much. Rorim, would you mind passing out the documents with the plan fully fleshed out?”

“Of course, ma’am.”

“Thanks. Now let’s get to business.”

The actual conference had officially begun. A presentation was projected onto the screen in the back of the room, with every aspect of the plan analyzed and every problem explained and resolved. Only the best of the best could possibly create such a well-thought-out plan.

“Alright, do all of you know what your jobs are during this mission?”

A collective “Yes, Commander,” resounded through the room.

“Good, now get started.”

December 21st, 11:26AM, at a Staynish Restaurant in Novosibirsk

Petrovavich’s phone began to ring. It was the head of the scout team: “Commander, we have completed our scout mission. All islands are cleared for takeover, except for the southern three. They appear to host an endangered species known as the Pygmy Dragonhawk. Along with this, the northernmost of the three also appears to have a settlement already built on it. We have yet to figure out which nation, if any, but we guess that it is either Dragonian, Xiopothan, or Lazlowian.”

“Any of those three are not worth agravating. Alright, we’ll have to shift our focus to the other islands then.” “Our military won’t be as thinly stretched, now that we have less islands to try to take over,” She thought to herself.

“Yes, ma’am, we’ll inform those squadrons to focus on the other islands.”

Petrovavich hung up, and continued eating her lunch.

The next day (December 22nd), 9:12PM

Petrovavich entered the conference room. The screen was pulled down with a map cast on it by the projector.

“What progress have we made, High-General?” asked Petrovavich.

“We have captured and maintained control of the islands surrounding Avut Isle, and are working on establishing bases on the islands east of the Crescent Archipelago.”

“Fantastic. Are there any issues with the far east islands?”

“Well, those islands are completely covered in forest. We haven’t found an open space or a beach to land on.”

“It looks like we’ll have to use subterrenes after all. Who first brought up that plan?”

Rictov struggled to raise his voice, but managed to speak up, saying, “T-that was me, Commander.”

“Alright, you said that would take three months, correct?”

“Y-yes, ma’am, but we are able t-to speed up the progress by drilling off the islands east of the C-Crescent Archipelago. That would sh-shorten the ETA to about two weeks.”

“Excellent, Lieutenant. Begin the operations as soon as you can.”

“Y-yes m-ma’am.”

December 31st, 2016

It was New Year’s Eve, and Petrovavich was at a house party with her family and friends. She then received a phone call from Lieutenant Rictov: “Commander, we have run into a problem with our F-M070 Subterrene. It seems to have completely shut down, even though no issues have been found with the electrics, mechanics, or the soil it’s drilling through. It just stopped moving. What do you suggest?”

“Find the best engineers and geologists and fix the problem with their help, of course.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

Petrovavich hung up, and continued her New Year’s Eve party.

[hr]

January 1st, 2016
It took Mr. Jeffrey Williams, Dr. Yalva Polosky, and Mr. Victor Yalovavich two and a half hours to reach the subterrene. Mr. Williams was a high-class mechanical engineer who knew more about subterrenes than many military personnel. Dr. Polosky was a geologist that had been studying the bottom of the Azure sea and surrounding areas for most of her career life, and was the perfect person for this job. Mr. Yalovavich was a geotechnical engineer that had some experience in repairing drilling tunnels before. Oddly enough Yalovavich was most likely the best person possible for this job.

The three were greeted by an officer named Jerolov Lakowski, who opened up with, “Greetings! Welcome to our humble abode. Now, we’ve identified a few places that might be causing trouble. The issue is either a computer glitch that we have yet to find, or a rock got lodged somewhere. Of course, there are other possible reasons, but those are the most likely.”

Polosky looked up, and in shock, said “No, neither of those is the problem. You seem to have a leak in your roof.”

All four of them were looking up at this point, then they all immediately began screaming “Return to the vehicle! Everyone return to the subterrene!”

Then, about two miles away, the top of the tunnel had broken through, and gallons upon gallons of water were now rushing towards the subterrene. At this point, everyone began running towards the F-M070. Four people didn’t make it to the driller in time, and now a crew of 56 were stuck in the middle of the ocean.

Still January 1st, 2016

The only calm ones were the three scientists and Jerolov Lakowski, who said, “Someone send a distress signal! That’s the only way we’re getting out of this mess!”

Someone out of the chaos replied, “Yessir!”

Later that day

The head of the drilling operation rushed over to HQ. He had just received a signal from the subterrene. The man burst through the doors of the command center, and announced, “We’ve received a distress signal from an F-M070 Subterrene. We are certain it’s the one digging towards the Far-East Islands. They say that they’re trapped under dirt and water after the tunnel’s walls broke open.”

Everyone immediately returned to their workstations, and began working on a solution to get the people out of that subterrene before they suffocate.

A couple hours pass

A group of personnel were in a group, working on their own potential solution. The five people walked up to the projector screen, set everything up, and began, “Alright, I know that this is a crude presentation, but here goes: So we know that at most 160 people are stuck in a subterrene buried below at least fifty feet of dirt, and a couple hundred feet of water. The subterrene itself went into lockdown before the water was able to seep into the system. This being true, the people stuck in the subterrene have a limited amount of oxygen before they suffocate. They have three day’s supply of emergency oxygen, and that gives us less than three days to execute whatever plan we come up with. Okay, so here’s our suggested plan: To begin with, we send one of our Cruisers and five of our submarines to the site of the subterrene. Before this, we will have to purchase at least five amphibious bulldozers (OOC: They exist, okay: http://www.komatsu.com/CompanyInfo/views/pdf/201312/Views_No20_amphibious_bulldozer.pdf) to remove all the dirt from the overhead emergency entrances. Those bulldozers will be brought to the site by the Cruiser, and before that will be sent to us by Serenitech through their one-day delivery service. Anywho, the people who designed the F-M070 thought about using it underwater, so airlocks happen to be on every opening. If the subterrene was any other model, we’d have to make this rescue even more tedious and expensive by adding airlocks. Regardless, once we get people into the airlocks, we’ll have them put on scuba suits, and will be escorted to the submarines waiting not-too far away. As for rescuing the subterrene, the amphibious bulldozers will have to spend a significant amount of time continuing the excavation. That will likely take about two weeks, considering the fact that humans have rights, and need air to breathe. Any questions?”

No one had any questions.

“Okay, so I guess we’re doing this plan then.” The person who had been talking had a little smile of triumph on his face while he was walking back to the table where they had been sitting, as this was the first time he or anyone in his group had presented something successful.

Meanwhile on the F-M070

“Sir! I have just received a response to our distress signal. Apparently, they are coming up with a plan as we speak.”

“Good. Otherwise, we’ll all suffocate down here.” Lakowski lowered his voice a bit, saying, “Don’t tell anyone that, of course.”

(OOC: I’ve kind of lost my motivation for this thread, so I’m just gonna end it quickly with a description of what happened after the events of the previous post)

The plan proposed by those introverted newbies worked, and it worked well; after purchasing the amphibious bulldozers, a crack team of skilled construction (or should I say destruction) workers moved all the unnecessary dirt and rubble out of the way of the rooftop airlocks. Everyone was saved, except for the four who sadly perished during the initial flooding of the tunnel. Another approach to getting to the islands was used, this time using a group of climbers to scale the cliffs of the forested islands, the climbers carrying the Tuvalt flag on their backpacks. Each island had a flag planted, officially making the islands part of Tuvaltastan. These islands were found to also harbor endangered species, including the dragonhawk, and were officially made nature reserves. A few walkways and docks were built around the edges so that people could visit the islands. The other islands held only common trees with shallow roots, and were thus used for mining the minerals below. To protect the life on the surface, however, mining subterrenes were used to get to the materials.

With the small population of another type of dragonhawks found on some of the islands, the Dragonian Zoological Center offers to help Tuvaltastan with setting up a joint ecological study of the species on the islands.

Tuvaltastan agreed to allow Dragonia to assist in the study of the Dragonhawks, considering the fact that Dragonians know much about their native species.
