Myriad Station

http://nswiki.org/index.php?title=Myriad_Station is a space station that was completed in 2007, and is in polar orbit around the Urth. It is supplied, manufactured and operated by the Nation/Emberwood Coast - NSWiki, Emberwood Coast’s space agency.
Because of the growth of the https://www.nationstates.net/nation=tripartite_state/detail=factbook/id=727239 in Gondwana, the three nations of the southern Pacific cooperative are now meeting to discuss talks on re-purposing the aging orbital facility.

In preparation, a four person crew has been selected to command the U.S.V. Columbia, and production is underway on refitted electronic equipment for the station. Among other things, LCD screens are traded for dynamic holographic projectors, unwieldy gigabyte hard disks are swapped for hundred-terabyte SSD’s, and radar is being upgraded with EM Passive Signature Tracking.

Additionally, the semi-completed U.S.V. Endeavor is being moved to Myriad to assist the crew in refitting the station.
Orbital maneuvers are currently underway.

The Tripartite State has taken note of the Space Station and is watching carefully. . .

OOC: I’m not sure how feasible it would be, considering that Emberwood Coast has been in space for quite a while now.

“Miss Nima, new coded ping from Mexregiona. They want in on Myriad.”

The president looked up at the aide, who’d rushed into the office, and got lost in thought. A nation like that could really help speed up the manufacturing.
She had to stop turning off her messages, though. Whenever she missed something urgent, the poor kid had to run in to tell her. “Thanks, Rhys.” The aide disappeared out the door.

That brought the number of involved nations to four. With Vekaiyu’s offer, and Caroline’s trip to Pax in the pipe, this could really be one hell of a station. Perhaps I’ll visit it once it’s done, she thought. Maybe all the leaders could go. It would be nice to see President William again, and to meet General Drugov, whom she’d only communicated with via official messages…

At any rate, the Columbia launch was tomorrow. She had to write this speech and stop getting distracted…

Training Pool, Sunrise National Space Center, Sunset City. 0860 Hours.
Ikaika floated over to the training dummy and started to replace damaged parts with new ones from his bag.

“Hows the repairs on the fake Myriad looking?” A woman’s voice spoke over his inter com.

“Uh, good so far Carolina, I think I can get this fixed up in a bit” He responded. The woman, Carolina, was watching the astronaut in training from above in the supervisors room.

“You know cold welding would make this way easier right?” Ikaika shined a light on his workplace while floating in the pool.

“We’re not in space yet you blockhead, cold welding is too unpredictable anyways for it to be used regularly” Carolina responded sharply. Ikaika sighed and waved at his fellow trainee, Lieutenant Corona, who the rest of the trainees affectionately called “B” due to his last name. The both of them started working on repairs for the fake Myriad.

Government Building, Coyden, Stratarin, 0900 hours
Two individuals, a man of average height and a woman just a pinch shorter, walked down the hall towards General Secretary Drugov’s office.
“Is everything in order?” Luka Dreykov, Minister of Space Exploration and Research, asked Klara, his sole assistant and wife.
“Of course.”
“Building supplies?”
“Ready to be shipped out.”
“Construction crews?”
“Also ready.”
Luka smiled.
“You’re sure you can do this?” Klara asked, a hint of worry creeping into her voice.
“My dear, the General Secretary is not an unreasonable man. I’m certain he will hear me out.” He stopped and looked into her eyes. “Have I told you how beautiful you are when you’re scared?”
She blushed a little in spite of herself. “I’m not scared,” she mumbled.
Luka chuckled slightly and started walking again. Upon reaching the door to Drugov’s office, they stopped.
Klara reached up and gave him a peck on the cheek. “For luck,” she said, then walked away.
Luka took a deep breath, and strode in.

“Ah, Luka, it’s you,” General Secretary Drugov commented. “What can I do for you?”
“I trust you have heard of Myriad station?” Luka asked.
“Naturally. I have already allocated some resources to its building.” Drugov looked up from his work. “Why do you ask?”
“Well, sir,” Luka hesitated, “I believe that with some more resources, we can add a much more Strataric touch to the base and further construction along drastically.”
Drugov raised his eyebrow quizzically. “How many resources?”
Luka didn’t reply with words, but by handing him a list.
There was a moment’s silence as Drugov read the list, then another as it sunk in.
“You do realize that this is not cheap?”
“I realize that, sir.”
“The manpower alone…”
“I’ve already assembled enough volunteers.”
“And the supplies?”
“Have been mostly prepped and ready. All I need is for you to sign off.”
Drugov held his gaze for a minute. “Alright, Luka. I will arrange transport for your crews and supplies on one of our shuttles. I will also have Rurik contact Emberwood Coast and inform them of this development.”
Luka gave a slight bow and exited the room.

“How will we coordinate with the Strataric launches-”

“We’ve got more contact now.” Nimona announced. The ECSEA director paced until there might as well have been a trench in front of the holographic screen. Behind the president, the soft lights of her office illuminated a few other people, the (at least, in his opinion) notorious Admiral Alistair, fresh from terrorizing the seas, now ready to terrorize his stars. Violence wasn’t meant to make it off Urth.

“You realize the shuttle has a finite amount of cargo space and life support-”

“Then send two shuttles. This needs to happen, the station is overdue for an overhaul anyway.”

Director Summer stared at the President, trying to figure out just what was worth all these people going into space. Maybe he could sneak some actual astronauts on board, too. “Then- Then can I at least get authorization on the new NTI satellite? We’ve had that pushed back for weeks, it wouldn’t take very long to launch and reset-”

“Of course, Koan. Get the rocket on the pad, just be sure the Columbia and Artemis are ready to go by tomorrow. We need everything to go right.”

“Of course, madam president. I’ll have the engineers work overtime.”

To whom it may concern in Emberwood Coast,

We have recently become aware that you are currently upgrading your Myriad space station. In the name of common interest, Axdel is prepared to send supplies and qualified manpower to aid in the upgrading process of the station. This is however not without cost, and on behalf of numerous laboratories and universities across Axdel I am requesting that in return for the aid that experimental data from the Myriad be exchanged with Axdel. It is also our hope that this will cement the foundations for further scientific cooperation between Emberwood Coast and Axdel.

Sincerely,
Vice president Derek Guenner

Launchpad 1, D’Aubigny Space Center.
Stonewall Point, North Aura, Emberwood Coast. 1530 Hours

The Neutrino Imaging Satellite, nicknamed Iago One, lifted off the pad on a pillar of smoke and flame. It’s mission was to study and map other galaxies, and scan for new stellar phenomena. It staged successfully and reached orbit at 1539.

Next to pad one, the U.S.V. Columbia stood proudly alongside the pylons and supports that held a network of wires and fuel lines against the hull. Tomorrow was the launch, and the crew rested safely at the command center, preparing for their mission. 20 Emberitians would go into space tomorrow, and four would stay to crew the Myriad.
That was the plan, anyway. Doctor Maori Undine was killed in a car accident an hour after the launch of the Iago satellite, leaving the proposed Myriad team short one pair of hands. The Strataranian and Setznan commanders were still okay, as was Polly Lu, the pilot who’d have accompanied the late doctor on the two-year mission.

In the background of Nimona’s office, a news anchor presented the coroner’s report on Doctor Undine. Another channel was interviewing her crying would-be crewmates.

What the hell was she gonna do? Nimona hung her head. The station and the experiments they were taking would need four people to operate. Not to mention that no mission should ever launch without a physician. The Axdelian Vice President had even sent supplies and workers to Stonewall Point, how could she tell them the mission was scrubbed-

Wait…

A tiny icon of the Axdel flag demarcated the destination of the president’s transmission. “And there you have it, Mr. Vice President. If you have anyone you think would be ready to go into space on a day’s notice, now is the time.”

The Hegemon Rocket flung through space, although much slower than before. At one point, the rocket was covering a couple ten thousands of miles a day, but this had dissipated to about a couple of hundred. On its slow travel to the moon, waiting for potential buyers, it had burnt only a small amount of energy, and was effectively in hibernation. Now, after a series of codes ran through the machine, the thrusters heated slightly; Hegemon was awake.
Dear Emberwood Coast and Affiliates,
The Mexregionan space agency of NOTER has successfully reinvigorated the Hegemon Rocket.
Info:
Name: Hegemon Rocket, or Hegemon.
Thruster Number: Initial: Eight; Now: Four.
Original Set Destination: Olune (as in the Moon)
Under Jurisdiction Of: NOTER, Government of Mexregiona, and (to an extent) MASTeR.
Cargo: No populace; (Oh, did I mention this?) nukes (as in very big nukes).
The problem with this reinvigoration is that the nukes on-board may cause problems in the space station. The main purpose for the Hegemon Rocket to be in rendezvous with your own contraptions is that certain parts off of ours could be of use. After all, our rocket was launched earlier this year, while the current station hasn’t been in much operation (as far as we can tell) since 2007, A.D. So, logically, the only way you and your teams can extract the parts is to navigate your way around our bombs. Due to NOTER’s stupidity, not to mention the cost to install a trigger, there is no true way to deactivate the bombs, rather than exploding them, of course. Therefore, we will have to guide you through them, from the Caek Station in Louisianaia, Mexregional Archipelago, Mexregiona.
This is if you want the parts, that is. They are very valuable. And since we really have no other use for Hegemon, other than blowing up Olune or Urth, this may be the only chance to make it of use. Your choice.
Otherwise, we will immediately send notice to global aerospace agencies to administer a new, manned, launch to join with the station. Although we may do this anyway, at some point.
That is all.
Yours truly,
THE LEADER OF THE UNITED STATES OF MEXREGIONA, MISTER LEADER II

Vega-Nocturis University of Astronomic Engineering, Montakaan Citadel, Axdel

Inside the main lecture hall of the university there was a distinct murmur of concern. As the main contributor towards the aid of the Myriads upgrading process, the mood of the students, professors and resident scientists was unanimously solemn upon hearing of the death of doctor Undine. The display at the front displayed an Emberitian news agency reporting at the scene of the accident, which was promptly shut off as the head professor of the astronomy department, Dr Caesar Niiro, shuffled into view. He raised his arm and the murmur subsided.

Ahem “Now, as you all should know, doctor Maori Undine tragically died in a car accident this morning, and unfortunately this has meant that the Myriad upgrade mission will have to be delayed. However, not all hope is lost, as the President of Emberwood Coast herself has made a formal request for anyone ready to go into space at a moments notice!”

Caesar’s voice almost broke with excitement, and the murmur from the crowd broke out again, almost mimicking the professors vigour.

“Now, quiet down for a moment, thank you. You may know that Doctor Maori Undine was the teams physician, so as well as being an experienced engineer or astronomer, the candidate also has to have medical qualifications. Thus, due to the restrictive requirements, the university council has voted to nominate Claudia Vernello to join the Myriad mission and become the first Axdel since our formation 20 years ago to go into space!”

The audience politely clapped and cheered, with a fair few peering curiously around the hall, expecting to see Claudia stood up in the crowd.

“Ah, I forgot to mention, she has gladly accepted the nomination and is already en-route to Stonewall Point for evaluation and g-tolerance testing. And for those who don’t know Claudia, she is a remarkable physician with a passion for astronomy. She has proudly worked for the past 6 years here as a resident astronomer and engineer, aiding in the design of multiple successful satellites that have greatly improved our knowledge of Urths oceans and geology. Therefore it was an easy choice for the university committee to make when Emberwood requested a replacement for the late Doctor Undine. Apologies to anyone who didn’t get picked, there’s always another time! Dismissed.”

It’s a good thing that Minister Dreykov had taken the initiative to have already chosen who to send to the station, else the selection process might’ve delayed them longer than need be. Kazimir Toporov, a tall, cynical, ruggedly handsome man; and Artyom Vetrov, a long-haired, silver furred, grey eyed Vulpine; had been selected to join the main crew as security officer and engineer, respectively. Travelling with them on Stratarin’s only space shuttle, the Chudo, was a construction crew of ten.

As the two officers took their positions near the front of the craft, Artyom turned to Kazimir. “Does this opportunity not excite you?” he asked, some slight enthusiasm creeping into his tone.

Kazimir scoffed. “Baby-sitting a crew of 12 while stuck in a giant metal tomb? Sure, what’s not to like?”

Artyom nodded thoughtfully, then slowly maneuvered back towards the much friendlier construction crewmen. After everyone was safely aboard, the Chudo began the launch sequence.

Launchpad Two, Stonewall Point.
Aura, Emberwood Coast, 0358 Hours, 12.4.2016

“Columbia, Standby for launch in tee-minus ninety seconds.”
“All ground crew, clear blast area immediately, all ground crew, repeat, clear to a safe distance from the launchpad two’s blast area immediately.”
The comm chatter echoed in the four astronaut’s ears, making Ensign Lu grip the yoke even harder. She steeled her nerves and set her teeth together as the cool voice of the launch commander passed “60.”

At “50” She primed and ignited the pilot flares.

At “45” She initialized the flight computer and had the holographic display bring up the launch profile.

At “15” She lit the main engines with a roar, that shook the ship and ground alike

At “5” The engines focused and hit full power, and the ship started to strain against the steel columns that were holding it upright.

At “2” the fuel lines and wires detached and fell away.

At “0,” the Columbia Rocketed off, with eight brave astronauts and a dozen tonnes of equipment and parts.

“We have liftoff,” announced the voice of the ground commander. The streak of plasma and disturbed clouds followed the craft up and out of sight as it upset the setting spring sky over Aura.

Dear Director Gardener (or to Whomever this may concern),
After having a, uh, fateful incident between our two nations, I would like to formally ask for permission for the USM to launch our new rocket (which has yet to be named). As you know, the Hegemon Rocket was kind of a big deal; not only did it throw us into dark times, it also killed my predecessor… But let’s not discuss this right now, that can wait for another time. The point is, this time we are completely willing to disclose any and all information to your organization, as long as it prevents another Hegemon Incident from occurring. Especially since if another Incident did happen, I’d be on the chopping block first.

High Polar Orbit above Urth
0716 Hours, 12.7.2016

Three Objects were now inbound on Myriad. The semi-dormant Hegemon Rocket, the U.S.V. Endeavor, and the computer systems module of the International Urth Space Station. Now occupying ports aboard the station was the Columbia .

Lu frowned. Although the Hegemon was supposedly not dangerous, it was being worked on at a distance of 36,000 kilometers away; a shuttle team aboard the Artemis was en route, with orders to disarm it and return with the nuclear fuel and components. In comparison she had the wonderfully safe job of instructing the Tretridian computer core to dock with Myriad. Finally, the partially complete Endeavor, complete with a 8-person crew compliment, was en route to reach Myriad station within the next couple hours.

She sighed and got her compartment set up. A small ten-cubic meter room, it would nonetheless be sufficient to hold the pack full of things she’d been allotted to take to space. She deposited her things and pushed her way back into the main hall, passing weightlessly past the doors to the other crew’s rooms and arriving in the command center.

After three days of orientation at Stonewall point, Claudia Vernello finally returned to Axdel ready to be launched up to the Myriad. She was to be launched on a TAZ-4 rocket, destined to launch another JERIKO military satellite but converted at the last minute to suit an ageing Norogradian orbital capsule, once used to load SYKAT during the Auroran Imperial War. It was early morning when Claudia arrived at Kaeman spaceport in the state of Kilkatraas. She was thoroughly drained from the training, yet there was no time to spare as the launch window was approaching fast. Being in a secluded area of highland, there was little press coverage of the event, and as Claudia stepped along the bridge to board the capsule, she looked over the side expecting a large crowd, though all she was greeted with was endless, desolate moor. Claudia entered the (rather musty) capsule alongside the two seasoned operators who were to accompany her to the Myriad, but were to return to Urth after depositing her on the station. Dawn cracked as the launch sequence began…

“TAZ-4 this is command, launch in t-minus 90 seconds”

Claudia clawed at the seat. Never before had she been more nervous in her life. The two operators wordlessly flicked the antique switches of the capsule, occasionally asking her to check the dozens of dials on the console before her, half of which didn’t even function.

“T-minus 60 seconds”

Now, all control was drained from the crew, as the automated systems of the TAZ-4 took over. There wasn’t even a proper countdown in the capsule aside from the sparse communication from command.

“T-minus 30 seconds”

The capsule was strangely silent as the launch edged closer. Claudia nervously glanced over at the operators, who looked as if they were were simply waiting for a bus, and it was not until ten seconds before launch when all ambient sound was deafened by the almighty roar of the solid-fuel boosters firing.

“T-minus 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, lift-off!”

The rocket shot upwards, the glare of the two giant solid-fuel boosters illuminating the early morning sky like a premature sunrise, before slowly darkening again as the rocket shot up further and became but another speck in the sky…

Thank you for sharing the information with us. We will continue to closely monitor any launches and approve them with the required data sent to us. As long as they do not become a matter of international security that would require a government intervention from East Malaysia it shouldn’t be an issue.

The ASWA would also like have the opportunity to inspect the launch facilities to see if we could work together getting them ASWA Certified for Environmental Safety.
