Historical Summary: Nishi Sōseiki island, better known by its Codexian-Staynish name, West Genesis Island, is a large landmass of varied climate and people. Early groups of humans comprising the Itak peoples and their culture group migrated to the islands of the Gondwanan Sea, eventually embracing a lifestyle of fishing and permanent tribal towns. Their time in the sun was limited, however, for the arrival of the Genesi peoples heralded a new age, one in which the Itak were not welcome. Over the years, as great empires such as Foleyna and Nagato rose and fell, the Itak would dwindle in population, until they were but a minority group on Nishi Sōseiki, which was now the land of the Kingdom of Nagato.
It was 1838, when in a bid for independence, disgruntled Nagatoian military leaders seized control of Nishi Sōseiki island, proclaiming a new nation they called the ‘Sōkei Republic’. It was a somewhat stratocratic democracy, and ultimately short-lived and unsuccessful, but the Sōkei Republic served to draw the attention of Vistari merchants and prospective traders in the area. Some enterprising souls sought endorsement from the Vistari crown, and upon receiving it, began their missions to Nishi Sōseiki. At first they came merely to trade, the discovery of colorful tulip flowers on the island only adding to the Vistari interest in the region. Eventually, however, the Sōkei Republic sought to regain control of its waters, and pushed Vistari merchants out, even firing warning shots from their battleships towards the Vistari vessels. Needless to say, once the Empire’s navy arrived, Sōkei was completely blockaded, their navy sunk, and eventually their leadership dismantled as the Vistari army marched across the island. By 1840, Nishi Sōseiki was but another jewel in the crown of Vistaraland.
Though the island was already developed, large areas were mostly inhabited by the Itak, a people the Vistari saw as sub-sentient. Vistaraland respected Genesi culture as an interesting and delightfully foreign oddity, but their colonists waged a war against the Itak, burning villages and slaughtering tribes to make room for their new settlements. In 1844 Nieuw Vierbak was founded on the smoldering remains of Niseko, one of the largest and most prosperous Itak settlements, its native population of nearly 50,000 killed, driven off, or enslaved. Vistari oppression decimated the Itak culture and population, but under their rule the nation that would become known as Satō developed and prospered, becoming a rich trading center of the Vistari Empire. By the time of the Great War, Satō was an industrial, fully modernized nation, albeit a relatively small one in terms of population. Satōkai colonial forces fought alongside the Vistari army and navy, and in a post-war agreement, Satō was granted autonomy. It was not complete liberty, nor was it true Independence, but Satō has remained as a dominion of Vistaraland until the modern day, a nation in its own right, even if it must bow its head to a greater power.
