Retired Supreme Federal Court Justice Anton Lavrentyev dies at 94
KIROPOVETS, DEBYRANSK OBLAST (HHC) - The Supreme Federal Court has confirmed that retired Justice Anton Lavrentyev has died at age 94.
“We are saddened to confirm retired Justice Anton Lavrentyev passed away this morning at his home in Kiropovets, Debyransk Oblast, from complications following an illness. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. He was 94 years old,” the Supreme Federal Court said in its statement.
Lavrentyev was nominated to the Supreme Federal Court by President Matvei Yakushin in 1984 and until he retired in 2008, serving 24 years on the court.
Lavrentyev is survived by his four children, eight grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. His wife, Nataliya Rudova, preceded him in death in 2016.
Lavrentyev remained a staunch supporter of civil rights throughout his time on the court, his most notable votes supporting the 1987 legalization of same-sex marriage, anti-censorship of media in 1989, and the decriminalization of marijuana possession in 2007.
Funeral plans have yet to be announced but Lavrentyev’s family confirmed he will be buried next to his wife in the Lavrentyev family plot.
