On a Clear Sky

I could once see, far into the distance
Long before, the rising sun
I could once hear, far beyond reach
Even above, the howling wind
I could once feel everything around me
Even the intangible, that out with touch
I could once remember all
Even that which time has forgotten
I was was once in paradise
Where there was light and forgiveness
Now, I am alone in this world
Where there is nothing, not even a clear sky

  • Translation of part of Hal’vo’s last propehcy, a mysterious free verse poem written in between his teachings

It is said in Hal’vo’s last prophecy a very scary dire warning of possible apocalypse. In it, he warns that “I can see through all time. I can see the Dannistrians standing at the beginning of time…and I can see them [still] standing at the end of time…” For many centuries after his death, many Dannistrians have tried to decipher the meaning behind those words, some taking it literally, believing when the end of the world comes, all other species and races will perish and only the Dannistrians will be left behind. Others, the majority, taking a more metaphoric interpretation of the revered deity’s words, believing what Hal’vo meant was that the Dannistrians will still be standing even after a massive conflict or disaster.

I once wondered to myself, what those words meant as well. What does Hal’vo mean by “end of time”? Is he talking about the literal heat death of the universe? Or does he mean something else entirely? Is he referring to all Dannistrians? Or is he vaguely suggesting that each and every single Dannistrian interpret those words to their own individual circumstances, like what he often does? Or is it some form of near death induced hallucination?

I’ve been working on this project now for 9 months and it is almost nearing fruition. I can’t say much about it publicly, but privately, in this journal, I can say I’m having grave concerns about it. The targets for completion have become tighter and now it is almost ready for deployment. The Central Government’s new “toy”. A new orbital satellite, based on a modernised version of the old Flycatcher platform. This will not be of any help to us if you ask me. The upper project managers have cajoled and threatened us in equal measure to get the project completed and get technical setbacks dealt with quickly. This is unfair on me and unfair on us. I’m going to be leaving my employers shortly once the weapon is deployed. I also do not think it will be of any help to Dannistaan once it is launched, other than to garner international condemnation and escalate the WMD situation in Listonia.

I still stand outside my garden at night and look at the sky. On a good night, I can see the old Flycatcher platform in orbit over Dannistaan, it looking like a large star. But not of hope. It is still a weapon of war that hovers over us, like the sword of Damocles. Now this new satellite will be launched two, there will be two of them. Twin stars of destruction. And I can’t help but worry if Hal’vo may be right in his eighth prophecy.

My left hand will be the judge of all under the sky, but force not my hand for my decision is mine alone and those who force my hand shall be judged…

OOC: Initially this thread was meant to be an explanation into the deployment of Dannistaan’s new orbital killsat, but it has become something of a philosophical rant for me as I have recently left my job due to certain problems at my employers. I now feel concerned over not just the lack of income, but lack of something challenging to do. It’s a horrible feeling and I don’t know how long I’ll be unemployed. I can’t help but feel I am now stuck on this path of forever more doing short stints at employment before quitting due to problematic circumstances.

I’m now in my room typing silently into my journal. Looking over my shoulder every so often, fearing the security may walk into my quarters to see what on earth I’m doing. In the beginning, things were OK. Pay was good, benefits were generous, and the labs I worked at were not too far from work so my commute wasn’t far.

As time went on though, and the weapon neared completion, there were fears my employers wouldn’t get the second contract from the Central Government. Attempts to make the organisation more efficient began. Cost cutting measures were put in place. Many started walking out in protest. The rest of us continued to toil on the satellite.

It is almost launch day now. My supervisor praises my good work but wishes I could work faster. No chance. I’m flat out and cutting some corners as well. I also do not see the point of deploying a weapon with no proven track record and will alienate us fom our friends. It’s still raining as I type this. Hal’vo obviously showing his displeasure. The skies are not clear anymore. And are getting darker every minute.

The launch went ahead two days ago. Two days. Felt more like two years. Shortly after the launch I handed in my notice. The manager was disappointed but ultimately accepted it, given me the option of leaving without working my two week notice period.

I can no longer see the logic behind the launch. The use of such a controversial weapon is obviously a political gamble by the Central Government. One that it seems to have all but lost because of the public anger over this weapon. I also no longer see the point of working in company contracted to work on the major components of the satellite due to the way it is treating it’s staff.

Sadly though, the winds of change are blowing and it is time for me to move on. Move on to something else…

I’ve been keeping a careful eye on the new now for a while. Apparently things have been getting more unsettled in East Dannistaan. This has left the Central Government with a lot on it’s plate. According to the grape vine from my old colleagues, the launch of the next satellite has been postponed due to this and other mitigating factors. I personally feel it is because the Central Government may now be realising the error and folly of its ways.

Hal’vo once warned of the dangers of raising a spear before seeing your opponent raise theirs. That was a metaphor warning of the dangers of showing aggression before anyone else did. We cannot keep living like this. We must return to purer way, where Dannistaan was neutral in all affairs and kept to itself and did not rattle the sabre at the first sign of trouble. We must go back to Hal’vo’s teachings. The orbital weapon will be proven to be a mistake. We must prevent it’s use or Hal’vo’s words of warning will come true.
