Utari Soegei, Heru, Eastern Rao

11 Jan 2026

I am reporting directly from the small Democratic Republic controlled town of Heru, situated right between Namlung and Ralungpa in what is better known as the Trifecta Point. Here, we are almost completely surrounded by RPA controlled territory with the exception of two safe corridors: one following the river Sanza, and the other down south towards the border of the Jogolo. For years, these corridors have provided the DR access to rural farmland here in the Eastern Rao province, but as of some recent reported developments, that hold might not last.

Lines could be seen forming in bus and truck stops of Heru locals wanting to leave the town before it possibly becomes the next new frontier of the war. It is an important note as well, that the buses provided largely have humanitarian symbols on them and were likely sourced from ongoing international aid. Many residents declined to comment about the conflict. Those who did offered sharply different concerns: some blamed the Democratic Republic for failing to reinforce the area, while others expressed fear that leaving would mean never being able to return.

Analysts researching the conflict have found that at the very start of January this year, RPA militias from Namlung began pushing back DR forces for the first time in years. In addition, the contested territories of Tarvahar, which is situated right next to Heru, has begun to fall back into chaos once more as reports and information from the region goes dark. Experts are taking this and the recent successes from the RPA’s militia as a growing sign that the Democratic Republic will completely lose control of the river Sanza at some point this year.
