One of our Subs is missing

OOC- being relatively new to the region I’ve been looking to kickstart some RP but finding nothing much to get into I just thought I’d start my own, anyone can feel free to join in.

STATEMENT FROM THE IMPERIAL NAVY OF THE TEUTONIC UNION

As of 18:45 on Saturday the 10th of January 2015 the Imperial Navy of the Teutonic Union have lost contact with the submarine INV Dioscorus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubis-class_submarine was undertaking sea testing following a major refit when it reported difficulties before shortly failing to maintain contract.

We request that any vessels in the area of the last known location report to the Teutonic Union government signs of any debris, oil slicks or sonar readings that may indicate a striken submarine. We are currently assigning the Rinter Fleet the region and give notice to all nations that these vessels will be taking part in potential Search and Rescue operations and would request that no nation intereferes in the process.

The Dioscorus has a compliment of 60 sailors on board and we are desperate to discover what has happened to them.

In hope

Somewhere over the Mahigan Sea

“Seeing anything out there?” The radio crackled, the pilot of the helicopter circling the ocean looking back to the two marines looking out at the deep, blue waters below. One of the marines continued to look out the door of the helicopter. “Negative. Calm like usual. Just our ships out there.”

Through the Marine’s binoculars, two frigates flying the Federation flag could be seen. They had been near the area when the call for SAR went out from their base Kuchata.

“We’re running low on fuel, returning to base.” The pilot radioed over the airwaves, which was acknowledged by the commander of the search and rescue effort. With a sigh, the two marines took their seats and strapped in as the helicopter broke off from the search pattern. “Don’t think it’s gonna be like 2010, do you?” The other marine shrugged, and continued to stare out of the door. “Hopefully they’re okay. We’ll see.”

Umberhaven, The Free Unity
Arno Dorian was flipping through the news stations, looking for something big to come up. He found it. A missing submarine, just near the coasts of The Free Unity. He hit the Jackpot! Happily, he sprung out of his seat, and got on the national dispatch.

“Hello navy, get your butts out there. We got a lost submarine in the Mahigan Sea. I need full search crews out there. Anyone got the lead, over?”

“This is Collin Kresredger, I got the lead. Give us the coordinates, and we’ll be out there in no time.”

Dear, Admiral Burghe,
The Free Unity is going to be on the full-search for this lost submarine. I hope you can help us, by trying to get other nation's to help. We will search the western portion of the coordinates given, and we'll report anything suspicious to you.
Best regards,
Arno Dorian

OOC: My first RP post here in TEP, so try to take it easy on me.
Also this is short because it’s my introduction, I’ll get much better in the future[edit_reason]more 'splainin i did[/edit_reason]

RESPONSE TO FREE UNITY AND THE LAIATANESE FEDERATION

We thank you and your nation for your prompt response to our message and your swift actions. We believe that the sub will not pose a risk to any nation and that this is merely a loss in communication or some kind of technical fault. We will of course keep you updated as we hear more.

With thanks

On board the Dioscorus, 6 hours earlier.

“Helm take us due North, make our depth 30 meters” Captain Bluhme said as he examined the chart in front of him. “XO, prepare for a action stations drill in five minutes, lets see how awake the crew are.”

“Aye sir” the XO responded and headed to the comm to prepare. He made a note of the time, “Sonar any traffic in the area?”

“No sir” the operator responded.

“Good then we’ll not be disrupting anyone.” The five minutes passed and they began the drills, first they ran a fire drill, next one for a missile launch. Finally the captain wanted to test their ability to dive in an emergency. “Captain, with respect we’d be better off doing this slowly, we’ve just had a major session of maintainence.”

“We’ll be OK, not like we’re going to crush depth or anything, beside it’s only 250 meters down here.” the Captain checked the charts. “Commence emergency dive”

The helm pushed the boat into a dive and those onboard braced themselves as the angle of attack steepened. As they reached 200 meters a horrid shudder went through the sub followed by the sound of a large bang. “Sir, I’ve lost control of the dive planes” the helm said the controls becoming locked in his hands. Suddenly a second bang could be heard followed by an alarm somewhere, the XO picked up the intercom.

“Sir we’ve got water coming in, rear compartment.”

“Seal it, emergency blow.”

“Aye Sir” the helm responded, he flicked a button, once, twice but still nothing. “Sir, its not responding.”

“Christ” the Captain muttered as the sub bottomed out on the sea bed with a thud. “Declare an emergency, lets hope HQ get it and trigger a response. I want emergency damage teams to start sorting this stuff out.”

“Well,” Sam thought as he read the reports concerning the lost sub belonging to the Imperial Navy of the Teutonic Union, “this might help open up relations with a few more countries, especially since Zak is breathing down my neck considering the Commonwealth creation.”

He began writing a message to the Imperial Navy of the Teutonic Union:

From the Office of the Monarch of the Confederacy of Vulshain

To the Imperial Navy of the Teutonic Union,

It has come to our attention that one of your submarines has gone missing. Being a former soldier myself, I can understand the necessity of locating these brave men and women of your armed services. The Armed Forces of the Vulshainian Confederacy are willing to assist you in any way possible. I will be awaiting your reply. In the meantime, I will begin mobilizing my forces in aiding you in the search and rescue. The men and women of the INV Dioscorus Ruben Class Submarine and their families are in the thoughts and prayers of the people of Vulshain.

Sincerely,
King Samuil Rainard, Monarch of the Confederacy of Vulshain

— End quote

Satisfied with the message he immediately sent it and began to mobilize the Northern Fleet. “I wonder if the new mechs will be able to help,” he thought as the vulpine monarch began making some calls.

The time has come. The men were gathering on just average search boats. Collin and his team of 14 other men got onto the search boat, and went out onto the Mahigan sea from one of the Puffin Islands.

“Alright, laddies, listen up. There’s a nuclear submarine. Somewhere out there. Since the oceans more north from here are frozen over, we’re lucky it’s not frozen at this time. Now I know it’s cold, but get over it, you little cry babies. Now let’s go.”

The ship went onto the sea, and the moters were put on. Accelerating lightly, a search member raised his hand.

“Sir, what about the possible blizzard that’s going to be happening over The Free Unity tomorrow?”

“Oh crap, laddie. That’ll be a problem if it hits us. Better warn the lads at the TU.” Collin called Arno, and told him about it.

Dear, Admiral Burghe,
Collin Kresredger informed me about a possible blizzard going to happen over The Free Unity, and possibly the Mahigan Sea. Precautions should be took, and more updates are to come. Thanks again,
Arno Dorian

The crew of the stricken sub had been sat at the bottom of the sea for over 24 hours, the Captain was remarkably impressed at how well the crew had handled it, clearly they were panicing but they knew someone would be looking for them and that they could stay submerged for a lengthy period. Many just sat praying while damage control teams did what they could to make a difference, which in truth was not much.

“Officers meeting in five minutes” came over the intercom. Lt.Gruber made his way to the Captains room where everyone else was waiting. “Gentleman the current situation is this, we’re stuck with our noses in the mud, we can’t steer up and something is jamming us from blowing balast, Heinz here thinks we may have picked up some ice and the maintenance lot messed up with our anti-ice system some how.”

“I’ll solve that piece of caek” Gruber said, “I’ll grab my kettle pop outside we’ll be moving in no time.”

“Now is not the time for your sarcasm Lt.” the Captain commented. “The men are currently taking this far better than I imagined, however it won’t last. We need to be giving them solutions. I have an idea, we are going to leak some oil, by now people will be searching for us, they’ll have our area of operations and last communication.”

“Sir, with respect weather said to expect some bad conditions, perhaps no one will be out if there is a blizzard or something.” one of the juniors commented.

“Its a risk yes, I’m not going to release all of it, just enough to be visible and we’ll do it every 4 hours during daylight. We’ll start at 6am.” the men checked their watches, it would be two hours until they began. “Anything else?” the Captain asked, each officer simply looked around at each other, “Very well, return to your duties and thank you for your efforts so far.” the Captain returned to his desk to update his log and wait the two hours before their first release.

The appointed time was at hand and the Captain gave the command. A valve was opened and a stream of oil released into the ocean, it floated to the surface making a thin but visable oil slick on the surface. With the approaching harsh weather conditions it would only be there for a few hours at most but even in that time the crew had hope that a searching aircraft or vessel would stumble across their signal.

“Oil released Captain, we have enough for three, possibly four more releases” the engineering officer said as he checked that the valve had been closed off.

“Thank you Captain.” We’ll release the next one at midday…assuming we haven’t been contacted by then."

Being the command vessel of the Search and Rescue Team 07, the Ulyanovsk-class aircraft carrier VCS (Vulshainian Confederate Ship) Mara IV with its escorts and support ships, two cruisers and three frigates with three Triomphant-class submarines, were already searching for the lost Teutonic Union submarine. “Anything,” Admiral Mechislav Vikentiy asked his second in command, a red and black furred Vulpine with white facial markings named Commander Bertille Boleslava, as they looked out over the sea through their binoculars. “Nothing Admiral,” the Commander replied. "Weather reports already informed us of a nasty blizzard heading towards this area. “We might have to pull back,” she added. They had been searching for a few days now with no luck.

Sighing the admiral and was about to give the command when a Lupine Chief Warrant officer came running towards. Snapping to attention and saluting, he said, “Chief Warrant officer Lambert Corentin reporting sir and ma’am!”

“well, Chief Warrant Officer Corentin, what is the need to run up a flight of stairs especially when the weather is turning back, and the steps are bound to be slippery,” the Admiral asked with a dry and sacrastic wit.

“The Eastern Cross has detected something due west by sonar. It’s faint, but the Captain of the Eastern Cross thinks it might be the Teutonic Union’s missing sub, sir.”

Rubbing his chin, Admiral Vikentiy thought. He knew the blizzard would soon be upon them, but if the missing sub had been detected, even if the chance of them just being dumb lucky was astronomically small, he’ll be damned if he was just going to leave that submarine’s crew to die. “Tell all vessels to head towards where the Eastern Cross detected that signal. And I want all vessels to keep both ears opened wide for anything! And keep an eye on the weather! All crews are to be operating under severe winter conditions until I say otherwise! And I want all of this done two seconds ago!” Both the Chief Warrant Officer and the Commander saluted and shouted, “Aye aye Admiral!”

All of the Vulshainian vessels began to make a beeline towards where the INV Dioscorus was located.

OOC: Yeah, let’s just say that got dumb luck on their side.

As the blizzard began to lift the coast guards http://media.defenceindustrydaily.com/images/AIR_Nimrod_MRA4_Irish_Sea_lg.jpg
began flying over the area they’d been given. As they slowly burnt through their fuel spotters kept a close eye on the recently churned up sea below them. “Bingo Fuel” the pilot called out as he turned for home. Just as he yelled out to the crew one of the airmen near the rear of the aircraft yelled out.

“Looks like a slick” he pressed a button on his GPS system marking the location he thought he’d seen it.

“We have a ten minute reserve, I’m going to stay on station for five minutes, keep an eye peeled for debris.” the pilot banked the aircraft putting it into a slow bank around the suspected oil slick. A second spotter confirmed that he too had seen the oil slick but as their reserve ran low they spotted nothing else. The pilot radioed it in as they spotted a bank of rough weather moving in on the horizon.

Back in St.Pauli high command got the message that they finally had a potential lead. “Let all nations know”.

— Begin quote from ____

To all nations involved in the search for INV Dioscorus, first may I thank you for your assistance, it will not be forgotten by the Emperor.

We have recently had one of our search aircraft spot an oil slick at GR 8-2-3-4-4-3-2-1 , we request that any vessels in that area keep an eye for surface oil and potential debris and inform us if they find anything.

We greatly appreciate your assistances.

The Laiatanese ships had been pulled away from the search area, the military deeming operating conditions too dangerous during the blizzard. Now, with the blizzard subsiding and an oil slick discovered by a Teutonic Union, the rescue vessels began making headway towards the possible location of the missing submarine.

The ships launched two of the three helicopters carried by the task force to move in ahead to the oil slick to confirm its location and try to locate any debris or other signs of the submarine. It took about twenty-five minutes for the helicopters to arrive at the slick and report its location back to the task force for confirmation.

“Yeah, it’s here. Intel is solid.” One of the pilots reported after one of the spotters gave them the thumbs up.

The two helicopters began circling the oil slick while progressively moving outwards, trying to locate any other signs of a submarine in that area.

“Hey, it looks like we may have a leak, not just the slick.” The pilot reported again about twenty minutes after they arrived.

“Copy that. We’re heading towards you guys at a steady pace.” The captain of the lead frigate, MMS Zrub radioed back, ordering the task force to pick up the pace.

As the Vulshainian rescue group began to search the Eastern Cross soon came across the missing sub. The captain ordered a message to be sent to the crew of the sub letting them know that help had arrived. The Vulshainians then sent a message to the other nations’ rescue teams letting them know that the missing sub had been found.

Ooc: sorry for the poor post. I’m having to use my iPhone and it hates long posts.

After the Vulshainian and Laiatanese vessels had passed on their information the Unions fleet made its way to the location. The science vessel Ramsussen arrived and sent down several remote controlled submersables. There on one of the video screens came a shape through the murky sea, as the lights swept down the flank the name Dioscorus came into view. As the mini sub made its way round it spotted the damaged part preventing the sub from climbing to the surface. It had been five days since they’d last surfaced and nerves onboard would be fraying. Using a robotic arm a means of Morse communication was established and a plan for a rescue put in place.

At 6am the following morning the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LR5 rescue vehicle moved into position, the crew heard the hiss as a secure air lock was achieved, inside the stricken sub they heard the hatch being twisted open and then a cheer erupted from the men in the compartment as a head appeared, “I believe someone called for a ride” a naval operator grinned. “Take me to your leader” he smiled as he was hugged by several of the subs crew. It took eight trips to recover the whole of the crew, the Captain was the last man to leave ensuring his crew were returned to safety.

“What happens to her now Captain” one of the rescued sailors asked as they surfaced after almost a week underwater.

“I guess they’ll raise her at some point, guess we got lucky”

STATEMENT FROM THE TEUTONIC UNION ADMIRALTY

It is with great delight we can today report the safe rescue of all crew members aboard INV Dioscorus. The rescue would not have been possible without the support of the Navies of Laiatan, The Free Unity and Vulshain, we are ever in the debt of these nations.

The cause of the disaster is yet to be established and salvage operations will be taking place in the coming weeks.

We are thrilled to have our sons and daughters back with us and we pray no other families are put through such trauma, an immediate investigation will take place and a full review of submarine safety will be undertaken.

Once again we wish to send our thanks to the navies who aided us.
