Pick a Side, Any Side

Ehjy Yslevestri paced around the large gathering room complete with a center table where other highly important ministers sat. He was careful to avoid the drink carts wheeled too and from the room, and didn’t mind the frivolities from the ministers who received their glasses. After all, he was the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Vekaiyu, one of the more powerful individuals in the room. And he was equally recognizable too - wearing his trademark black suit with slicked back black hair and thick rimmed glasses. The vulpine individual gripped his lapels as he cleared his throat.

“I thank you all for attending this meeting. Milady,” he said with a bow, which was received well by Premier Ikrisia Levinile. “I do apologize for scheduling this meeting on top of our weekly meeting on organizing the upcoming military parade in Eldura. But I feel this matter is of enough importance where we simply cannot wait on this issue any longer.”

“I’m speaking of two growing factions which seem to be concentrated on other continents on Urth. One organization, South East Pacific Coalition Forces, appears to at first be concentrated on the continent of Aurora, but has expanded since then. Now this alliance includes roughly one dozen nations, including Tretrid, Staynes, Tuvaltastan, Emberwood Coast, and Setzna, to name a few. Now, this alliance was mainly built in opposition of another alliance, The Fire Pact, which includes nations such as Tripartite State, Gilat Shea, and Asendavia, to name a few. There’s been some squabbling between the two, but the Fire Pact in particular appears to be a union based on trade. It is unclear if the other union is as well. Both are of course military alliances.”

He waited until a large holographic map finished updating to highlight the states in question. “The Vekaiyun Union prides itself as one of the largest and most prosperous trade alliance on Urth. I know this because I’ve had it drilled into my head from Imanov Risilake over here ever since the Yasterian Highway System was complete. We get it, you did well.” He paused to let the chortles subside. “So let’s take a look at the map. You’ll see that the Fire Pact Alliance contains Gilat Shea to the east and Asendavia to the west. Should they in any way restrict or conflate our trade, it would become a rather difficult issue.”

“Perhaps we should send escorts?” Kral Commodore Yamano Nevikalu, a human, asked.

Ikrisia shook her head. “No. Unnecessary. They wouldn’t attack us unprovoked. And if they did, that would have the whole of Yasteria against them. Trade between Yasteria and the local continents are a delicate matter.”

“But what I am trying to say is it may be unavoidable to remain neutral in this conflict,” Ehjy Yslevestri continued, still gripping his lapels. “Tripartite State has declared war for both factions, while Stratarin has declared war on Tripartite State. This situation is quickly delving into a state of intercontinental war, something we’ve not really seen since District 57.” He sighed. “Our hand may be forced here. We may need to select a side.”

The room erupted in several conversations going on all at once.

“Enough,” Ikrisia began. She grimaced. “I just don’t see a need to join an alliance at this time. Unless I am missing something, we can still remain neutral in this conflict and continue trade with both factions. Why would we willfully enter a war? What exactly do we have to gain in this conflict?”

Imanov Risilake, the Minister of Foreign Trade in Vekaiyu, piped up. “Well, many of the nations highlighted have limited relations with Vekaiyu. They trade, sure, but if this is a long war where we are far from the action, it’d be beneficial for us to pick a side and fuel one of them from afar.”

“That’s not exactly ethical,” replied Ikrisia. She shifted in her seat.

“But if we stay out of this, we risk being passed up.” Ehjy Yslevestri walked over to the Premier, who stood up. “Milady with all due respect, my team has run simulations and produced preliminary numbers on this issue. We’ve arrived that it has a strong possibility to enrich our nation if we-”

“I am not concerned with entering a war we have no business being a part of,” Ikrisia interrupted. “Your duty is to establish strong relations and you will do that, Yslevestri. Don’t use a war as an excuse to make your job any easier, for it will not be. Vekaiyu has no purpose in this war, especially as we look to potentially expand our Union elsewhere.” She motioned over select areas of the map. “Dveria has been a struggle to this union, but the eventual submission and synergy has eased my fears… to a degree. But I am not in the business of war-mongering, Yslevestri. There are… significant benefits to not acting in that manner, and I am disturbed that you believe entering a war will benefit trade.”

Kral Commodore Nevikalu shrugged. “Depends on if we pick the right side, I think.”

“Exactly!” Yslevestri responded.

“The answer is no,” Ikrisia answered stoically. “It’s too early. If they wish for us to enter their war, I am sure they will come to us. For now, we will continue to play both sides and trade accordingly.”

Nimona sighed and hit send, ushering the digital letter on its way northward.

To whom it may concern within the Venkaiyun government,

My name is Nimona Poole, I am the president of Emberwood Coast. You probably haven’t heard of me. I represent, in this instant, the Southeast Pacific Coalition.
Our actions, although based on shared principles of freedom and individual liberty, have not been entirely pacifistic. However, we as a coalition condemn in the harshest of terms the civil rights abuses of the nation, and by extension, Pact, we now combat militarily.

We aren’t here for land. Or for blood. We’re out there with lives on the line because of what their nation stands for, and what others have stood up for.

Tripartite State is a brutal nation, lead by a narcissistic, brutal dictator. They’ve outlawed marriage equality, their army is burgeoning, the nation’s freedoms of speech are a joke known the world over. Their people are suffering and we will not sit idly by while we enjoy happy lives.

We do not demand, or even ask that you help us. We only ask that you consider the values Vekaiyu would stand up for, and that you weigh those now against the cost of an engagement.

Regardless of the stance your nation takes, there will be refugees from this fight. While my nation will welcome as many as possible, the simple fact of the matter is that I simply haven’t the room to take many. I hope we can count on you to help us aid any who are displaced because of this.

Thank you for your time.

Hello,
I would like to supply an argument in favor of the South-East Pacific Coalition. First of all, the Fire Pact is lead by Tripartite State, a dictatorship that has eliminated all civil rights and its ruler holds an iron fist. They are actively trying to snuff out the flame of democracy, and violating human rights along the way. They have restricted humanitarian aid, and the state controls what people say.
Another reason is that the SEPC is now not only dedicated to opposing the Fire Pact, it is opposed to those who will obstruct democracy. The Fire Pact is an alliance in which members uniting against the values of democracy. All the work of what countless nations have down in the TEP will be for naught if the Fire Pact succeeds. That is why we need all the support that we can get (voluntarily, of course). The SEPC also stands for peace through all of Urth, and nations like Tripartite State hold contrary to that goal. We stand for democracy, rights, and freedom; the Fire Pact does not. The Fire Pact stands for dictatorship, oppression, and subordination.

Greetings,
I am not here to convince you to join our side. Not at all actually. While I will not deny any of the accusations against my ally, I will not spread lies about them and tell you they did none of this. With my Kingdom to the east and Gliat Shea to the west, we could cut off trade in those areas. We won’t however. I know better than to do that and anger the rest of Yasteria. We do not wish for this to become a worldwide war, though it seems like it is heading that way anyway. Think of all the wars there have ever been. What did we get from them? I will answer that for you, pain and suffering. That is all wars have ever brought.
We also do not want any nuclear incidents on our hands. Our space station up there will be our last resort and we will use it if necesary. If you do join the side of the SEPC, I will warn you. Do not anger the bigger fish. The bigger fish come out to play when the smaller fish are tired and beaten. When greater threats awaken because of the smaller threats the world will be doomed. With that, I now leave you.

Ikrisia mulls over the response provided by the President of Emberwood Coast. She isn’t quite sure what to make of the outcome, to be certain, especially considering Veakaiyu, a devout adherent to Vayan Catholicism, does not allow same sex marriages the same. Still, it is interesting for her to note that nations, whoever they may be, will require refugees to the cause. Ikrisia, while ingrained with a staunch upbringing of specism, understood the plight of the free soul, and was willing to act accordingly.

To Nimona Poole, current President of Emberwood Coast,

Your concerns have not gone unwarranted by the Vekaiyun government. While the nation of Vekaiyu has heard your clarion call for action and concerns brought upon by the unscrupulous acts by Tripartite State and their allies, the nation of Vekaiyu and its jurisdictions provided by the Vekaiyun Union cannot at this time support either side in the conflict. We do understand the plight of refugees and their necessity for settlement, of which we are able to proffer locations for such cause, but we do not wish to choose a side at this time.

We understand the significant vulpine minority in your nation and wish them all the best in their endeavors. More specifically, we both anticipate and hope for greater synergy between species of interest, and hope that the exemplary efforts continue even as these conflicts continue. Should you require specific help, we will certainly consider that and make necessary efforts to sustain your nation and the elementary provisions provideed for all species and their rights therein.

With all the hopes of success,

Ikrisia noticed several more messages appearing in her inbox. She decided it would be best to respond to them one-by-one. For whatever reason, it appeared several factions wanted Vekaiyu’s support in an ever-growing war. Had her Minister of Foreign Affairs recruited help? Not likely, she mused.

Interesting. May you supply specific examples of these atrocities the Fire Pact has committed? Vekaiyu and The Vekaiyun Union respects the right of nations to rule accordingly, provided they are not committing injustices on their own people and, historically, in particular minority species.

I look forward to your response. Specific examples will be brought to the attention of our executive staff.

To Jon Harstad, King of Asendavia,

How dare you levy threats against the Vekaiyun nation and The Vekaiyun Union. We do not take such threats lightly, no matter how trivial they may be. Should your nation or any nation associated with this pact even attempt to disrupt or damage any persons or items associated with the two entities, we will brush your disruptions aside and crush any opposition.

Consider this a formal and final warning. Do not find any solace with a mere warning - further threats will be met with dire consequences.

Hello again,
Among the many atrocities committed by the Fire Pact is building a military space station and using it to destroy a station with civilian purposes, with intent to kill all aboard. Tripartite State has bombed their own people just to make an excuse for the Fire Pact to declare war on the SEPC, not mentioning the strangling lack of rights (like banning private enterprise and banning a play because of the presence of a donkey), and all everybody sees and hears is controlled by the government, and has secret police to murder anyone who dissents with the dictator. The vast majority of nations in the Fire Pact are not much different. I hope this helps you consider a side.
Thanks,

Lucius Breggan looked up into the skies from the Union Building in Cape Hope. He stood on the rooftop with several other Union representatives and military members. On one side of the horizon the sun has already dipped below the water, on the other the deep blue hue grew. It wasn’t the sunset that brought them to the rooftop, but rather the orange streaks in the skies. They extended over the nighttime backdrop, like fireworks.

Several of his aides were whispering to each other, unable to comprehend it. The space agency sent several experts over to help the President of the Commission understand the implications of this event. One of them stood next to Breggan, talking, " The millions of countless shards of a space station, satellites, and other debris that have collected in Urth’s orbit have started to come down. Most would burn up at altitude, while some would hit the ground. Over a hundred satellites were reported damaged from the accelerated Kessler syndrome, debris from the blowing up of a space station. Only fifty or so devices remained relatively undamaged or escaped with minor scratches."

“How far has this set up back?” asked Breggan.

“The Administration is saying that our rocketry efforts will be set back by over decades. We cannot launch anything without risk of debris causing a catastrophic event.”

“How long will it have set the nearest launch?”

“About three to four years, providing they don’t blow anything else up.”

Breggan cussed silently to himself as he started moving over to the Foreign Affairs aide, “Damn jackasses.”

Lucius was an astronomer growing up, he would count the individual stars in the skies with his mother. Now the skies were devoid of stars, but hosts to evidence of destruction thanks to inept world leaders. The Union never had any space stations, keeping mainly to satellites. A decision once heavily criticized by Lucius, now became a godsend. He felt helpless for those foreign astronauts. Some would die from the debris striking their crafts, most from starvation thanks to severely hindered resupply efforts.

To the Leadership of Nations at War,

The Northern Gondwana Union has suffered catastrophic damage to 138 satellites under it’s jurisdiction in orbit. Only 52 satellites still remain in some operating form. Thanks to the accelerated effects of Kessler Syndrome, enhanced by the destruction of Space Station Myriad. That is not counting the losses that other nations have suffered, and in some cases severely restricted their ability to peacefully explore the reaches of space. It is predicted within the Union Space Administration that astronauts of varying backgrounds and nationalities will either die of starvation, freezing in the fringes of space, or from rapid loss of air thanks to other nation’s inabilities to resupply space stations due to Advanced Kessler Syndrome.

This is a warning issued to nations participating to cease all actions of War and seek an armistice or peace accord. The first step has already been taken. From the time this message is sent, all foreign embassies belonging to said nations will be forcibly revoked of their diplomatic immunity. All representatives will be forcibly deported to their respective nations. All civilians and/or military personnel belonging to said nations will face two choices, to revoke their citizenship and become a Citizen of the Northern Gondwana Union, or to be forcibly deported to their respective nations.

The second step if this warning is not headed and no efforts are undertaken to reach a peace agreement, will result in economic sanctions and economic warfare. The Northern Gondwana Union hopes such drastic measures will not be advanced further than it already has. We demand a peace accord and cessation of all hostilities between each individual nation.

To the Vekaiyun Union,

It is with great regret that war has happened between several nations of Urth. However, the results of this war are far greater than we anticipated. Following the destruction of the Myriad Space Station, the debris has accelerated the Kessler Syndrome present around Urth. According to the Union Space Administration, the Northern Gondwana Union has suffered catastrophic damage to 138 satellites under it’s jurisdiction in orbit. Only 52 satellites still remain in some operating form. This is not including foreign nations with damaged orbital vessels and satellites, and especially not counting our defunct satellites that have been in orbit since the 60’s.

As a step of trying to coerce peace between the individual nations currently at war, we have issued diplomatic sanctions. All foreign citizens of each respective nationality have either been forcibly deported, or have renounced their citizenship to said nations. We have withdrawn our embassies, and forcibly revoked their embassies of diplomatic immunity. All their representatives will be sent back to their respective nations.

If a cease-fire has not been issued, and peace talks are not underway; economic sanctions will be undertaken against said nations. It is with hope as a prominent nation such as the Vekaiyun Union would help lead the way in coercing peace instead of war. We look forward to hearing your statement on the matter.

OOC: Kessler Syndrome is a bitch, people in space will die, and satellites will be knocked out. It ain’t a regional thing, it’s a global thing, so it affects everyone. :\

Ehjy Yslevestri pushed his thick-rimmed glasses up to the bridge of his muzzle. “There was an explosion. The Fire Pact Alliance apparently destroyed a space station.”

Ikrisia remained stoic yet unimpressed from behind her desk of marble and jaku wood. “I’ve been briefed on that report, yes.”

“The debris from the attack has created a ring at high polar orbit. Our satellites by and large also follow a polar orbit. Fourteen of our ninety-eight satellites are damaged, with nine of those out of operation.”

“I am aware, yes.”

“I’m not a scientist, but I’ve been told we can fix this at a cost.”

“It will of course be granted.”

“Apparently this action has roused anger in large trade unions and nations. People expect the Vekaiyun Union to weigh in on the developments.”

Ikrisia smirked. “I hear peace talks have begun.”

“They have.”

“Perhaps we attend those talks. And perhaps we offer to supply technology to remove the orbiting debris.”

“Why would we do that? Shouldn’t the offenders work on fixing this mess? Why does Vekaiyu need to get involved now?”

“Because,” Ikrisia replied, matter-of-factly, “We’re going to need it. You and a foreign affairs dignitary of your choosing are to attend these peace talks. I will provide you with the necessary information. Just do not press. That’s all I ask.”
