Remembering the second civil war
Richard Gerring | May 24, 2020

“THIS IS NOT MY HOME: A screenshot of “Seven Days in Seibhu” a homemade video capturing the events of the communist rebellion of 2016”

Four years ago, Santa Rosan Governor Rubio Chavez proclaimed that the province was declaring its independence in the name of Communism. Chavez announced that he, along with his comrades, was building a communist utopia. Soon after, an estimated amount of 10 thousand Santa Rosan militiamen, police officers, and army reservists marched across nearby provinces and started what would be called the Sokalan Civil War. Rural provinces like Santa Monica, Monay, and Purok fell to Santa Rosan arms immediately since they have little to no armaments to combat the insurgents.

Gabriel Padual, the prime minister at the time, ordered around 100 thousand Sokalan soldiers to be deployed in the Santa Rosa’s surrounding provinces. He also ordered the deployment of 200 thousand army reservists from Northern and Central Sokala. March 14 would mark the first exchange of firefight between Sokalan and Santa Rosan guns. While securing a small border town between Purok and Laguna, The 101st Lagunan Infantry Batallion and local police officers came under fire from the newly formed Santa Rosan army. The Sokalans had a total of 500 Sokalan soldiers and 50 local police officers while the Santa Rosans brought 1000 men to attack the small town. The gunbattle lasted 8 hours with the Sokalans sustaining 157 casualties and 363 wounded while the Santa Rosans lost 583 men with 395 injured. The rest of the Santa Rosan soldiers were either captured or missing.

For the next three months, it was mostly a one-sided battle with Sokalan troops reclaiming most of the cities and towns that the Santa Rosans had conquered earlier. Sokala’s military superiority squashed Santa Rosan attempts at an offensive with the utmost ease. Sniper teams were able to spot Santa Rosan platoons from a mile away with the help of unmanned reconnaissance drones and thermal scopes. Airstrikes from Sokalan jets were able to suppress any mass charges and vehicular attacks.

Sokalan military entered the Santa Rosan province on July 2. Sokalan battalions easily captured 23 towns with 17 of which major food producers for the Santa Rosan province. Sokalan operators later begun to infiltrate and capture Santa Rosan generals and figureheads. Rubio Chavez would later order the conscription of all adult males and females to be trained and deployed as soldiers. This would slow down the Sokalan offensive as Sokalan army transports are frequently ambushed by Santa Rosan conscripts.

It would be a month later when the Sokalan military would be able to be on the offensive again. Sokalan military strategists, inspired by the German Blitzkrieg, begun a fast-paced attack on 12 major cities in the Santa Rosan province on August 11. Santa Rosan soldiers would stare helplessly as countless jets and helicopters would bomb highly defensive buildings to ruins and later, dozens of APCs (Armoured Personnel Carriers) and S10 Light Tanks would come and breakdown anything resembling a defense. Most Santa Rosan conscripts in these cities surrendered to Sokalan military while others fled to the province’s capital, Sontoc City. After taking heavy losses Rubio Chavez signed a two-month temporary ceasefire with Gabriel Padual and Sokalan military.

Eager to prevent any more casualties, Gabriel Padual ordered an all-out attack on Sontoc City right after the ceasefire ended. While the sun was not yet rising on November 1, The 201st Pittland Paratrooper Brigade, the 10th Lagunan Paratrooper Brigade, and the Sokalan National Paratrooper Division launched an airdrop attack while 101st Lagunan Infantry Batallion and the Sokalan Cavalry Brigade launched a blitzkrieg like an attack. A total of 100 thousand Sokalan men rushed to attack the Santa Rosan capital. This would prove to be the beginning of the end for Chavez’s dream of a socialist utopia. After a week of firefights, Rubio Chavez surrendered to Sokalan soldiers along with all of his underlings. One year later Rubio Chavez would be hanged for treason before his family and 257 of his followers.
