Ok so I got the special edition DVD walmart had that has the 1997 version and the original 77 verstions, I have 77 playing on the Mac, and 97 playing on the TV, other than a clearer picture on the new version, the only difference I see so far is the added frameing scenes, the TV is running 13 seconds behind as of Owen going to the kitchen to ask if Beru has seen Luke (the morning after R2 runs off.)
Mostly its just the special effects that are different. There are some slightly different cuts of bits as well IIRC.
I think that the most recent DVD’s have some different cuts as well again compared to the 1997 version. I know they changed “ghost” Anakin in ROTJ to Hayden Christensen but I swear some other bits seemed slightly different as well, not sure if that was just me though.
And Han shot first, of course.

I believe that they re-did the look of the red lightsabers.

Greedo now shoots first, effects are cleaner, added stuff like framing for scenes,
and yes, in ROJ they took out Sebastian Shaw and put in the singing monkey. the justification is when a jedi becomes a force ghost he reverts to his prime, well why was O-B-1 and yoda still old?
(btw I prefer teh original set of stories that lucas put forth about the clone wars, that the clones were not soldiers but clones of Jedi and they were fighting sith, originally he said Obi Wan’s name was his clone designation OB-1 and he was the first clone in his series (cloned from a jedi master long dead who’s initials were O.B.))
