After weeks of discussions inside the People’s Chamber and the Politburo a consensus was reached declaring that a trial reform will be made to the economic system in order to see if it will increase both production and economic output.
According to the document the main aims of the reform is to:
- Reduce the wastage of raw materials
- Increase the level of mechanisation used
- Create a system in which quality rather than quantity is foremost.
- Improve the performance of central planning
The reforms however will not change anything in the way of centralised planning or endanger the socialist system says Ulbricht “We are not replacing or removing the current economic system, we are adjusting it in accordance with Marxist-Leninist economics to better suit the needs of our time and provide to our workers and their state.”
The reforms will run in a trial period until the end of the year when a report on the effectiveness of it will be written. Workers are encouraged to convene with their union, representatives and planners to help gauge the new reforms. More information will be posted on notice boards in factories and workplaces in the future.

Berlitow construction workers invited Erich Honecker to the handing-over of the one millionth new home that had been built since the end of the 42nd Party Congress in 2011. The date of completion was 20 August 2017.
At the construction site in Berlitow Comrade Honecker met with veteran construction experts, workers, site managers and architects of whom many he had known for years. During the short meeting in front of the new block of flats the foreman Benno Radtke said:
“We keep our word, Comrade Honecker. Our finest moment comes when the work is done and the tenants can move in and feel at home.”
After the meeting the mayor of Berlitow, Erhard Kract, symbolically handed the key of the apartment to worker Hermann Grosskopf and you could see the joy in the family’s faces as they got the key to their new home. Comrade Honecker then gladly accepted the family’s invitation for lunch in their tastefully furnished new home.

Honecker and the family cordially chatted over a cup of tea in the comfortable new sitting room and had a friendly discussion about the house, and what it meant: one million new homes.
“It means a millionfold family happiness.” Mr Grosskopf said.
It is hard to imagine that only a few months ago there had been empty plains and urban prairie and now many people would soon have a beautiful new home. Before departing Comrade Honecker offered the family a small gift and after saying farewell he himself retired to his own house.

Just a few days after the 95th anniversary of the CDR the children of the country have been given a beautiful new present: The Free Cerdan Youth Palace in Berlitow. The new facility has been designed to supersede the earlier Pioneer’s Park, which was handed over to the children back in 1995.
Over twenty years later and a new facility has been inaugurated and, in the presence of Erich Honecker and Ernst Ulbricht, officially handed over to the Free Cerdan Youth.
The new Facility is designed to allow children from all parts of the CDR to spend eventful and happy days with their young friends and comrades from other across the country and the world every year.
