The Darkest Dawn

Noi sat looking out across the expanse of the great Pax desert. It was a bright day, unusual that the clouds of smog and pollution that normally covered the empire seemed to be somewhere else today

“I wonder if it will ever grow again?” She said out loud to no one in particular.

Her body was mostly cybernetic after years of implants and reconstruction. she clanked and gleamed in the bright sun as she strode across the desert. She controlled a vast population of peoples of all races. The billion voices, she remembered an old friend once calling them that. She thought it quaint that that particular estimate had long ago been passed. She watched as a group of Arkane sat idle from mining below the surface. She thought about the ever present green lands to the north that she envied.

“I wonder if it will work?” she thought to herself, still walking the desert.

1 week earlier

Noi sat in a conference attended by the topmost Hive researchers. They had promised her something that would cover the world in the Hive. She had expected them to show of a new weapon, or perhaps a new jump gate that would allow them to re-connect the abandoned planets of the empire. What she was looking at was shocking.

“As you can see Miss Noi, there is a strong current of raw energy that encircles the planet. We had first assumed it to be a form of dark energy that we could harvest for the singularity drives of the fleet, but we noticed it wavered in intesity at certain times. It seems that it was already being tapped.” A young human female researcher explained to Noi. “We could not figure out what was going on, but we traced the source back to what appeared to be a low power mage…” She let the gravity of what they had discovered hang over the room.

Noi asked “We have discovered MAGIC?! That seems ridiculous. No Pax has ever been able to access the mana streams. Even those who were assimilated from the Kandorese lost the ability when assimilated.”

The researcher smiled “Yes, it seems impossible, but there it is. We have had minor success in using the energy for small experiments.” She frowned now “However, we may have been noticed. We are unsure of the full effects of using the energy. We have no idea who may be watching us as we dip our toes into this new ocean…”

Noi walked through the desert. What had been proposed was extreme, even for the Pax. She would assimilate the energy source into the Hive, or at least try. The researchers predicted that it would open up the possibility of Pax mages. Noi shuddered at that thought. She hated mages, because it was something the Pax could never have… Or so she had thought. What would it be like, connecting an entire culture to the energy… She might as well think of it in the old terms… Mana… Could the Pax use it, or would it destroy them?

The Iremian Empire – The capital city of Irem
An ancient building – In the meanwhile

As the last hooded figure had entered the subterranean room, the man who seemed in charge of the meeting glanced at his eleven companions… now twelve, all of them wearing rather simple white robes, hoods masking their faces. More a ceremonial habit than a real necessity, in times like those.

«We’re glad to see you’ve been able to reach us» he told, observing as the newcomer took the one chair left.

«The travel restrictions are a pain. I’ve had to make a stop in Kandarin… the quickest route, despite not specifically safe. Luckily enough, the quality of my documents was good enough to fool the… what do you call them, right now?»

«Borders’ Sleepless Sentinels» replied the one in charge, irony being clearly perceivable. The newcomer grinned under the hood.

«I’m sure this is not Ludum’s idea. Rather funny. So many jokes about the Iremians’ ceremonialism and now… Sleepless Sentinels. Sure thing. We’ll see how much time it will take for the Empire’s neighb…»

«Confederation»

«Oh right… the Ziganian Confederation. Sometimes I wonder whether they have actually done something aside just changing names and self-celebrating themselves» chuckled the newcomer.

«Are we here to have fun about the new government, remembering the old times past… or are we supposed to do something more constructive?» interjected one of the other attendees. At that, both the one in charge and the newcomer nodded as to excuse themselves.

«You definitely have a point… even if I do hope this will not be such a difficult discussion. The situation in The East Pacific is rather clear. In my opinion. The whole region is experiencing a moment of great instability, with a number of open or looming conflicts. In the very middle of this uncertainty… the Accident. I suppose all of us are aware of the tremendous amount of magic running basically free all around the land… above all in this nation called ‘Drakkengaard’»

All of the others nodded in whole agreement. That was their life, after all. Magic users chasing for raw magic. To tame it… or to fight it. It didn’t really matter. The core of it was… the challenge. The cold grasp of fear facing nameless creatures coming from either dreams or nightmares. The excitement feeling the pleasing electricity of pure power running along their backbones, running to their very fingers while muttering ancient words of powers. And now, they finally had a battleground. A place where more magic being unleashed would have been hardly noted. So different from the world they were living into, where weirdness was progressively cornered and annihilated. If they had been waiting for a chance, they now had it.

«And then… just near Drakkengaard… well, you all know what I’m referring to. The black hole. Packilvania» he grinned «So… my question would be rather simple. How many of you will not come, my fellow War Mages?»

A whole minute after, not even a single hand had been raised. They would have moved. A challenge, at last.

will reply when I get the hell out of here

Yay, A Post!

Noi sat and watched the young drone in front of her as he went through the checklist. Attached to him, was a Mana collection device. It was crude, and mages may have laughed at the Pax’s attempt to wield even the simplest of the magics.

“Ready to power up. Hive damper seems to be working. There should be no back-flow.” The young human-Drone rambled off to Noi.

“Good. I can only imagine what would happen if Mana penetrated the Hive links. Go ahead and power up.” Noi said as she checked the readings throughout the hive herself.

“Affirmative.”

The Collector powered on and glowed purple. Noi looked through the readings on the machine as they were broadcast through the Hive. They all looked normal. She nodded to signal she was ready for him to start.

The young drone aimed what looked like a particle cannon at a target about a kilometer away. It fired. A stream of course mana fired out and obliterated the target.

“Not as strong as what we normally use, but it can be refined. What is the state of the weave?” Noi asked one of the attendants standing by.

“Not bad. It is pushing on his hive link, but the damper is holding. We seem to have pulled a lot of what little mana there is in here, but it is still stable.”

Noi looked at the target, and back at the drone. It was going to be a long day of testing the various gadgets designed to allow drones to use mana. It was exciting, but tedious. She nodded for the drone to continue.

Somewhere near the Packilvania - Drakkengard border
In the meanwhile - thirty or forty kms away: who knows, in those cursed wastelands

As what seemed a sword made of light disappeared in the air and the blood staining it simply went on the sandy ground, the white-robed man grinned under the hood covering the whole of his head, including the face. Two small holes for the eyes and nothing else… but enough, for his companion, to catch the devilish shimmer in his eyes.

«Kandarinese, Drakkengardian… or something else?» he asked.

Observing the dead creature, the second war mage frowned slightly, hiding his own doubts under an identical hood.

«I really do not know. It’s some kind of… bah. I would say it’s not natural. Have a look. it seems nothing more than a walking bunch of raw meat. As if someone was playing god. You know…»

«The sparkle of life and something like that… possible» nodded the first man «But then… have a look. Humanoid-like structure. His attempts to… walk. His reaction in seeing the two of us… no, my friend. This is not an experiment. This is… a twisted human. An Uranium Guard, I’d say»

«An Uranium Guard? What the hell are you…»

«Yes. I’d bet on it. A non magic user who’s been exposed to an excessive dose of magical radiation. I’d assume this creature has been wandering around since the big ka-boom and…»

Suddenly, the two of them stopped, their senses in full alert.

«What… what the hell was that?»

The first war mage remained silent for a rather long while, his mind trying to focus on the vibrations all around them: exploring, probing… but remaining carefully away from the alien lure coming from the Packilvanian territories.

«It’s been… some kind of mana blast»

«A mana blast? What the hell… it was… uhm… rude. Gross. Raw… you get what I mean»

«It’s not just that. This is not an inexperienced acolyte. This is something different. Very different»

«Dif… how much?»

The first war mage chortled.

«That’s what we’re going to find out», he answered.

The drone waited for his next command. He was tired, having spent the day controlling the mana cannon, and performing small cantrip level spells. A mage would have laughed, but it was the first time something with seemingly no soul was able to control mana. It was strange. He could control it through the various mechanisms augmented to his body, but so far, no actual mana ran through his flesh. It was as dead as ever.

Noi thought about what the archmages in the varying schools of magic would have to say about the Pax actually wresting mana from the weave around them. Time had shown it could not be done. They said the Pax gave up their souls when they assimilated, instead becoming something different. She laughed to herself.

“I guess we will show them…” Louder to the test drone she said “Alright, the proof of concept is good, but it is time to try something else. I commend you on volunteering for this. We are unsure of what will happen, or if you will ever be a part of the voices again. Please prepare your mind. When ready, let us know, and we will sunder you from the hive.”

The drone only smiled and nodded. He knew this was coming. He was scared, but the Hive had saved him from the streets of Eldura years ago when he was shot trying to live the life of a criminal. He was paralyzed, but the hive rebuilt his spine and let him walk again. He had given up his privacy, but he was content. He wanted to pay them all back somehow, and he trusted he would come through this like he had his other injuries.

When the disconnect happened… It was quite. For the first time in years he could hear nobody but himself. He almost went insane, but remembered he had a purpose. He hit a few switches on his armaments, and the mana channels opened to his nervous system. Mana poured through him. He erupted in violet flame…

OOC: I am unsure of what effect this should have on the drone. It is similar to a spell plague. Also, it isn’t known to the Pax, but they have been tapping the shadow weave as opposed to the actual weave.

Near enough to see, far enough to flee…

«What… blessed…»

«Shut up. Not a word… not that word» the other man interjected «We do not know what’s really going on. Don’t use words which bring power within themselves. We…»

«But you’ve seen it!»

«Seen?» smirked the man under the white hood «I’ve not seen anything but those violet flames. And I suppose we’ll have to consider it as a trick»

«A… trick? That… what the hell is that, by the way? That thing… it wasn’t there, before. Then…»

«You’re panicking as a kiddo facing the bugbears. Ok… something has happened. There was no essence and now we have… a sparkle of it. I’m not sure. Your panic is a thunderstorm inside my head. And your mental shields are going down. Should I remember what could happen you if the… Hive touches your mind? So… shut up and focus your energies. As long as our mental barriers remain high, the Hive cannot touch us… and we’ll have our chance to find out what’s going on»

«F… find out what’s going on? Those things are trying to practice some kind of magic. We should go. It’s too…»

«Risky?» chuckled the man «Dangerous? For the Columns… we’ve come here for a battling contest. We’ve come here to hunt down monsters and the like… and now that you have plenty of them at half a kilometer from you, you start shivering and crying for mummy?»

«It’s… this is not… I mean… we cannot confront the Hive. Not on its own territory, at least. This is…»

«A chance to learn something about this Hive half the world whispers about. It could be… interesting»

«They will assimilate us!»

«There’s a chance they will try, of course. That’s what they do. But I’m not sure it will be so easy. So… do you stay or do you go? Teleport yourself somewhere else. You should be able to do it. But in case you stay… shut up, let me listen and above all…» he finished, his blue eyes shimmering as cold sapphires «…above all, try not to be an hindrance. Because I will not waste a single droplet of my magic to protect you, should things go to hell»

The flames enveloped his body, but he did not burn. His eyes turned to a pitch black. In a voice not his own, he began to chant…

Y k’zzyr dra kodak yv ramm. Y k’zzyr dra ky’an yv dra ymj. Y k’zzyr dra vyna yv rnaodyyr. Y k’zzyr iy’ zykrdi yra.

Noi stood by watching the anomaly, not in a panic, but in wonder. She could not reach his mind, and could not help him, but something was about to happen.

A researcher yelled “Get clear! Sensors indicate a jumpgate is opening! We can’t trace its origin!”

“Shit” Noi cursed.

At the same time, the incantation ended and a hole seemed to tear in space. Through it stepped a monstrosity that quickly dismembered the drone. His flames did not extinguish, but his life had left him.

The researchers began to fire blasts of whatever weapons they had available at the creature, but only the particle cannon was effective. They soon died as well…

The creature approached Noi.

“Iy’ ‘ydr ry ky’m. Ry’ 'ok Y k’zzyraj yr dra ryyj?”
You with no soul. How was I summoned in the void?

«What the fu…»

«Stay here»

The younger warmage stared, observing his companion as he started to move away from the rock they were hiding behind. «What do you… where are you going? Are you fool? That’s a pit…»

«I know what’s that» replied the blue-eyed mage «That’s why I’m suggesting you should stay here. You wouldn’t have a chance on earth. And in case everyting goes wrong… I’ll need someone to call the chivalry. That is something you could do, after having gone away, obviously»

«If you… if you enter the Packilvanian area… the Hive could… I mean: shouldn’t we just go? This is a problem of theirs. Let’s…»

«Go away and allow the fiend to remain on this plane, undisturbed and…»

«They’ll find a way to annihilate him. Haven’t they superior tech and…»

«Oh sure. Have a look. In this moment, their strongest weapon has slightly wounded it. On the opposite side, the girl… the… oh well, whatever she is… she’s the one survivor. Luckily, he seems interested in keeping her alive… for now. But the gate is open. The lands will not survive to another one. Not after what has already happened not so far from here… damn’it. This silly idea of magical tech or technical magic… everyone is messing with things they do not understand, and then it’s we the ones who have to solve…»

«This is the point! We do not have to…» panicked the younger mage, in a last attempt to convince his companion, who grinned devilishly under the white hood, walking slowly towards the carnage… and Noi. After a couple of steps, a thin aura seemed to surround him before vanishing just as suddenly. A minimal protection was now ensured… and now, the second problem. Would she have accepted some kind of telepathy… or would her link with the Hive have been an insurmountable obstacle?

Grinning, he decided he wouldn’t have had another option but trying. Carefully, he tried to reach her mind while avoiding the Hive’s lure.

I could be of some help.

Border outpost 13

A skeleton crew of soldiers, bored despite serving within a wild magic zone (humas can adapt to everything after all…), suddenly gets lively as a energy surge off the charts just some miles into the Pax side of the border get registered on their omniradars for a few precious seconds until it shutdown to prevent overload.

“Jesus, what was that Captain?”

“I don´t know… and thanks to this crap shutdown, there is only one way to know…”

And to that, they all chanted the unofficial motto of those who work in the wild magic zone: “Let´s go out there and kill something!”

Moments later a squad of ACs stand in the border, and after seeing the fiend through a sat-link, their leader transmit to the nearest hive module their request to enter Pax territory so they can help fighting the beast.

The Hive had many advantages for Noi. One of them being able to multitask like the devil. She saw many things, were ordinary people only saw one or two. She saw the negotiations in the north had come to an end. It was good, she decided. Enough blood had been spilled. Of interest, she was forwarded a beacon from her allies in the south. She sent the reply.

“Our friends are always welcome on Pax soil. I am unsure of the outcome of this engagement however, and cannot guarantee the continued safety of your troops.”

That was done. Good, she would hate to lose this body… It had been with her years, and while only partially organic, it was hers. She readied the commands for an orbital strike anyway. If she lost her body, she would incinerate the entire area if needed.

It appeared that the beast was attempting to communicate with her. She scanned the archives of the Pax, but found nothing able to translate the strange language.

“You killed my drone’s bodies. You stand before me seemingly threatening everything I hold dear. I tell you this, understood or not, you will be assimilated or destroyed.”

She began to shift into a fighting stance, when something intruded on her… She thought it was an over-eager aide at first, but soon realized it was from outside the Hive.

'Shit!" She thought. Scanning it, it appeared not hostile, but it could go mad if it was subjected to the brunt of the Hive. She did her best to shield him from the billions of voices as she attempted to reply.

Help if you must, but leave my mind. You will not be able to filter the individual minds that seek you out!

OOC: When Noi is responding, expect a barrage of white noise. A normal person’s head would probably explode, but you did cast some sort of barrier. While the Hive would not seek to assimilate you, it would be comparable to hearing EVERYONE at once.

His mind saw her answer before actually getting it. It came with the fury of the wolf’s blow against the straw hut of the Three Little Pigs. Voices and cries and curses and whispers and snores and jiggles and laughs and… half the humanity. Perhaps even more, if what he knew about the Hive was accurate. Perhaps, among the storm of sounds, he could have caught the dreams of some being or another living on Vega or wherever from outer space the Hive had come from. He could have caught it… and a moment after his mind would have been vanished, dragged away by the current. Resistance is futile… wasn’t that their slogan? They were right. No enchantment on earth would have worked. No mental barrier… no nothing.

But… he had known what to expect. To be really honest he wouldn’t have expected such a magnitude, but the core of it was matching his analysis. Instead than building a shield, he did just the opposite. He shrank his own mind, his own self. All of his conscious thoughts just went down, his brain becoming a computer shutting down all systems and going into a deep standby. He had done it before, while his mind had wandered the void after having abandoned his own body. In the end, it wasn’t that different. The absolute void… and the overcrowded stream of consciousness of the Hive or whatever it was. His own name. One little thing to focus onto, an anchor to reality… to individuality. The name became a monolithic thought, able to fill up all of his mind.

He was being a pebble in the waters of a roaring river. Dragged, pulled, pushed… but safe. And then, one of the numberless droplet of waters came to him.

Help if you must, but leave my mind. You will not be able to filter the individual minds that seek you out!

Hadn’t him be too focused on his anchoring thought, he could have grinned. It was working.

He’s dangerous. But the fissure he’s come from… that’s even more dangerous. We have to close it, but if the Hive retaliates too strongly, annihilating everyone in the surroundings… then… who’ll close it?

“Acknowlegded.” whispers the AC squad captain as he reads the reply from the hive.

Then he speaks on the open frequency:
“The mission is a go, boys. Let´s ride!”

And then the ACs turn on their over-boosters and rocket themselves to where Noi and Fiend stare each other

“Any positive ID on the monster?” asks one of the pilots

“Some partial matches, but all less than 50%. We might name it a demon just because it looks like one and treat it accordingly.” answers another.

As they get the beast on weapons range, the captain curses and says:

“Listen, there is a VIP on the combat zone. Explosive ammo is not allowed until i say so. Everybody loading generic anti-monster rounds until we found out what hurts the beast. Reducing to walking speed and no one shoots unless it moves to attack us, the VIP, or if i give the order.”

And the ACs march forward, with weapons ready and aimed to the fiend, waiting for an opportunity to shoot it without risk to Noi

Noi stared at the beast in front of her, and kept the newcomer in her side vision. She decided to trust him, and gave him a nod, before expelling his mind from the Hive. ‘The Drak should be able to help with this… for now…’

She looked at her hands. She hadn’t used this particular skill in a long time, but deep in her history… she was still Neko.

She smiled, and extended her claws.

“Let’s dance.”

Feel free to RP the fight however you feel best. Noi would be roughly equivalent to a 19th level monk.

As soon as Noi had expelled him from the Hive, the white-hooded War Mage got back all of his consciousness. Immediately, he smelt the excitation of the incoming battle… and a single moment after, he made his move. Mind control wasn’t his best skill at all, but the Armored Core had something he needed. In the blink of an eye, his willpower had pushed away the consciousness of the youngest Drakkengardian pilot. A gloved hand pressed buttons the War Mage wouldn’t have been able to differentiate between each other… but what he had wanted, it simply happened. The Core’s flamethrower erupted a volcano of fiery death.

Grinning, the War Mage abandoned the terrified mind and focused on the flames, which shrank into a tiny ball, not larger than his thumb. Waving an hand, the War Mage ordered it to fly towards the pit fiend.

«Let’s see if you’re of the fiery kind… or not» he chuckled.
