Sofia Vusmein has swept the inaugural 2019 presidential election, gaining the keys to the Gold House with 80% of the vote. The landslide victory saw Rismeinian doctor Joel Peters get wiped out, despite being ahead in opinion polls earlier in the year.
“We will put the power of our country back into the people’s hands. This is not a victory for me, this is a victory for us,” President-elect Vusmein announced to a crowd of enthusiastic supporters in the national capital, Naza.
Time will tell if she can turn around the country’s economic woes and give the people strong, democratic leadership following years of military instability.

Archaeologists have today found ancient remains on an excavation site for the nation’s new high-speed rail project, which will stretch over 10,000km from Naza to Rismein, making for a 23-hour journey on the 450km/h train.
The remains, which consists of human bones and a series of seemingly religious trinkets, are believed to be from, at the latest, the 14th century.
“This discovery is exciting and could radically shape our understanding of how early inhabitants of the Isles lived,” said lead archaeologist Sarah Gunjatar. “We have a unique opportunity to jump back into the past.”
As for the rail project, experts say the find will delay the highly-anticipated infrastructure needed to run the network by at least one month. “This is frustrating,” said Minister of Transport Andrea Agostina, “but we will survive. Unlike those ancient remains, I guess.”

Fires are currently ripping across the north-eastern corner of Llorenian Isles, with emergency services forcing 2 million people to evacuate from their homes to safer areas. Already, up to 20,000 people can no longer escape and will be forced to defend their homes from the violent blaze.
The Llorenian Meteorological Association pinned the event on two low pressure system colliding in the area, paired with temperatures over 45 degrees for the past three days.

A controversial bill from the ruling Socialist Party on transitioning from fossil fuels has created a divide between them and their coalition partners, the Green Party. The Climate Change Amendment (Fossil Fuels) plans to transition Llorenian Isles to 100% renewable energy sources, namely solar and wind, by 2030.
Green Party Chairman, Josef Cervenka, said to a packed press conference, “We are negotiating with the Socialists on the bill. We are not pleased that fossil fuels will still be used for more than the next decade as the continent rapidly warms. We will seek for immediate measures to combat climate change.”
President Sofia Vusmein, however, labelled that demand “reckless” and “completely economically unfeasible”.
