The Urth Papal Conclave

There are most likely around a billion Catholics on Urth. As far as I know, there hasn’t been recent discussion as to the spiritual leader for these Catholics, but there should be one. So, we should make a role-play about a Papal Conclave to elect the leader of the Urth Catholic Church.

The location of the Conclave: Christie Island. Why? It is in a good location, is well-regarded as a stable nation, and has not been involved in anything recently. Having the Conclave, and potentially the “Vatican” located here would be good (at least at first, but perhaps the new Pope will order the diocese to be moved).

Who is invited: All Cardinals from every nation are invited. How do you get a Cardinal? You create one. You can use this thread here to create your Cardinal, or use the eventual IC thread. Each nation will have one Cardinal, but some nations may be permitted to have more than one Cardinal. The nations that are permitted to have more than one Cardinal are those nations that have a high percentage of Catholics, and are very religious as a nation.

What you will do: It’s a Conclave, so the Cardinals will vote for the successor of the Church on Urth. Cardinals will present their spiritual credentials, their vision for the direction they wish to take their flock, plans for new Church teachings and methods, and will try to receive enough votes to be elected as Pope. It’s a process that is somewhat secretive in real life, so there are likely tons of coalition-building, backroom deals, and potentially bribes to receive enough Papal votes. The Urth Papal Conclave would be no exception.

The way the RP will play out is like above. You will RP as your appointed Cardinal-electors, write speeches, make deals with other Cardinal-electors, and give your reasons why you should be Pope. Eventually a vote will be called, and the Cardinal with two-thirds of the vote is going to become the new Pope. It will all be done on the forum.

Why should you do this? Besides being a RP that touches on religion, something not often covered, there are at least a billion Catholics on Urth. The Catholic Church on Urth is a worldwide organization, and administers charities, schools, hospitals, universities, and non-profits. It can control economies by just telling its members what to buy or what not to buy. It has the ear of some world leaders, who may turn to the Church for advice. The Pope crafts how the Catholic Church will conduct its operations and teach its flock, and handles excommunication for those of its flock who do not adhere to Church teaching. There potentially exists a lot of power for a Pope controlled by a certain user, and that is something that should be taken seriously, and something that you may be interested in vying for.

So, use this thread here to ask questions, bring up suggestions or concerns, put your Cardinal information, and give thoughts. Pretty soon we can get this IC thread started.

Vultucas Cardinal:

Name: Yuri Vuma

Age: 57

Born: March 6, 1960

Yuri Vuma was born into a Catholic Family his father and mother has been a Catholic since birth,
Yuri was baptized into the Catholic Church, he has been ordained a priest and has been regularly active in his church, Provides service to others for free daily, He believes that he can show his church that service is important, and also says that he listens to others needs before himself, He says that his family has been strong Catholics for about 246 years and his entire family is active and are very generally nice people, he also says that he loves his church and all who are in it and also loves others outside of it.

The Archbishop of Absurdistan:

Bepa Alexeev

Born: April 22nd, 1957, near Novosibirsk, Kostuvastan

Bepa Alexeev was born into a small family with a strong military heritage. He was the oldest of three brothers, but the most pensive and quiet of the three, and most likely to draw the ire of his father, a retired military soldier. He would turn to his Catholic faith to escape from his father. When he was seventeen, he made the decision to join the seminary, which infuriated his father. Kicking him out of the house, Bepa made his way to a local seminary, and while he could not afford to pay for lessons, he prostrated himself before the Monsignor of the seminary, asking to learn and in return he would work maintenance, grounds-keeping, and whatever else they needed to run the seminary. The Monsignor accepted, and Bepa was allowed to listen in on the lessons with the other seminarians.

He stayed there until the 1980s, until the arrival of the Kostuvastan Civil War. He received word from his father, the first time in almost ten years, that his younger brothers were enlisted and sent to fight in the war. In a desire to continue to protect them, Bepa dropped out of the seminary before he could be ordained, and enlisted alongside them. Being part of the religious, even though not completing his studies, Bepa was assigned to be chaplain for the battalion his brothers were in. Assigned to defend Novgorod, in 1989 the battalion came under heavy bombardment, and both Bepa’s brothers were killed in the ensuing conflict. This caused Bepa to become depressed, and, coupled with his father holding him at fault for not dying honorably, like his sons, Bepa left the military and spent the early 90s traveling and aiding war-torn parts of Kostromastan, becoming a local celebrity, until one day he ended up back at the seminary. Returning to talk with the Monsignor, he asked to return to his education. The Monsignor declined, stating that there was not much more he could teach Bepa, and ordained Bepa a couple of days later. Bepa was assigned by the Bishop a Diocese in Kostromastan.

As a priest, Bepa diligently performed Mass, aided the laity, and in his spare time assisted with the local military garrisons. Though he was well loved by his parish and the diocese, he felt empty. Turning to writing more, he wrote a series of fictional stories that served to illustrate his inner thoughts, questioning his fate. Eventually, the writing and praying became therapeutic, and his stories turned from the questioning of faith and existence to an embracing of God’s vision and suffering to contemplate a higher level thought. His work was published, and was known as a literary masterpiece, especially to the Baykalians, which many cite the work as a great help for them to retain their faith while their ethnicity was being massacred by Kostroms and Tuvalts.

In 1999, the bishop of his diocese passed away, and Bepa was chosen to succeed him. He was ordained a bishop, and began his reign as the bishop. Again, he was well-liked and well-trusted by people throughout the world, as his work had spread Urth-wide. He was nominated to become a Cardinal, and was transferred to become the Archbishop of Novgorod. It was particularly troubling for Bepa in this role, because of the connection to his brothers and fathers. However, he dutifully administered his diocese. In 2010, he began speaking out about several injustices taking place in Kostromastan and elsewhere. Specifically, he lamented the rise of secularism, the capitalist worship of money, and several teachings of the Catholic Church, namely stewardship for the environment and the rights of the priests. In response, the government of Kostromastan conducted a smear campaign, and Bepa was transferred to the region of Absurdistan, to get a diocese started up there. This was especially a punishment, because Abusrdistan was seen as having the most selfish and capitalist-minded people on Urth. It was assumed that the Bishop would remain the rest of his ministry confined to administering this region.

In 2016, the increase of tensions in the area, and the eventual beginning of the Auroran-Pacific War shattered the assumption. Speaking from a position of authority, Bepa personally traveled to the war-torn Yor Isles and attempted to broker peace in the nation. Though always under threat of war, Bepa showed no fear as he went among the people of Yor, helping them through the turmoil. Once a treaty was signed, he continued traveling from Grand Fenwick to Dorchester, and continued to serve there.

Now the Papal Conclave has been called, and Cardinal Bepa Alexeev has been called to decide on the new successor to the Catholic Church on Urth. He brings with him years of dutiful service to the faith, a deep knowledge of administrative affairs, a propensity to be well-liked, and clear visions for Church teachings that may or may not be embraced by the other Cardinals.

Christie Island isn’t a nation. It’s neutral territory.

It’s owned by everyone. So church functions would be fine but ownership itself is off-limits.

Christie Island is central to a lot of the ‘big’ Catholic nations of Urth I think …

The Vatican City of Earth: Vatican City - Wikipedia … only covers 0.17 sq mi …

How about Urth’s Vatican City sits on it’s own little island connected to Christie Island by a causeway?

Would that work?

Put it right next to the Caliphate…

But seriously, the Catholic Pope on Urth will probably not be on the best of terms with a monstrous caliphate. Putting it on Christie Island would have incurred Pax invasions as it became strong enough to retaliate against crusades.

Codex was used by a legendary player long ago before A map reboot. Once upon a time he had the huge tracts if teritory whicj have now been retconned. His nation is now part of the Free Pacific States. The English language is named after his nation… Arguments for Codex
instead of Christie Islands or Sacred Islands

[ul][li]Latin originates from Codex and is the primary language of the Roman Catholic Church upon which the Urth Catholic Church is based.
[li]English (called Codexian) originates from Codex. Its proliferation was supposedly brought about by its massive transcontinental empire. I debunk this statement because too few nations exists to corroborate this fact. Therefore the proliferation of Codexian could have been achieved by the extensive missionary work of the Codexian evangelists.
[li]Codex is more likely to have the military might to face the Packilvanian Caliphate head on.
[li]Codex presents a geographical location that could have plausibly formed the setting of the Great Schism.
[li]While no consensus has been reached many users support the Lyon area (although not necessarily Lyon itself) could have formed the setting for the founding of Judaism, which the Christian religion is an off-shoot.[/li][/ul]

Therefore I propose Codex.

The Crusades did not really influence the religion as such, they were just a part of RL history no different from less religiously motivated or even secular military events therefore they should have no influence in the decision-making whatsoever.

As a corollary to this. I propose that the mother state of Judaism and Christianity (known as Judah or Israel in RL) should either be located either in Pax right next to Lyon as an autonomous state near Lyon. As Judaism is an ethnocentric religion, Lyon’s candidacy as its source makes no sense whatsoever as Lyon is probably less Jewish than Pax itself and any change would virtually extinguish Lyon from existence subsequently rendering making it the home state of the aforementioned religions pointless. As Pax represents their entire Middle East, the location of an autonomous Jewish home state therein will allow the history of Judaism in TEP to fit that of Judaism in RL with more ease.

Can we finish this before the wedding? I want the pope in attendance.

Vayan Catholic cardinals have met on the matter proposed… and rejected the proposition. The reason they presented is three-fold, outlined below:

  • Christie Island, unlike Vekaiyu and the evangelized lands St. Aiya traversed, is not holy land. The Holy See of the Vayan Catholic Church will remain in the holy land of the Vayan Catholic Church. While the land is still technically within the Vekaiyun jurisdiction, the land has been set aside for the church and has been confirmed by Premier Levinile
  • The Vayan Catholic Church is currently separate from Roman Catholicism and separate from Orthodoxy and Protestant (henceforth identified as ‘latter’ faiths). Until this fourteen-hundred years schism is amended, the Vayan Catholic church and its roughly one billion followers will not undergo unification or partake in unification procedures with sects that believe non-human indivuals were not bestowed the grace of salvation, a core belief of the Skendia Creed
  • The Vayan cannot maintain unity when the Vayan Catechism remains at odds with what is deemed to be an incomplete Roman Catechism. Should the two sides wish to engage in unification discourse, that can be explored at a later date unrelated to this edict and with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which guides and compels all creation to follow the Will of God.

The seat of the Vayan Catholic church is Eldura, and has been for the past fourteen hundred years. Despite a number of disruptions, the Vayan Catholic church does not intend to move from this jurisdiction.

Due to a lack of demand for this style of RP, and to move this topic along, I am going to make a few executive decisions that are in no way set in stone and can be retconned or amended. I hope that is as clear as can be; I don’t want anyone getting angry with me for doing this.

I like Oan’s idea, as it is in a central location for a number of Catholic faiths, including Roman Cotholicism, so Urth’s Vatican City will be in Codex.

Bepa Alexeev will be the newly elected Poep, and has decided to take the name Poep Ciarán.

His agenda is one of reconciliation, reconciliation for faithful women of the Church, for environmental affairs, and for other species of Urth that the Church has discriminated against. Poep Ciarán would absolutely be in favor of a Catholic ecumenical council with all Catholic leaders across Urth, to reconcile differences and come to be more unified in the Catholic faith.
