Welcome to Urth, but not like you know it.

In the estimation of the world’s best scientists, it has been approximately twenty thousand years (±7,500 years) since the end of Urth’s last ice age, which is believed to have ended abruptly. Recent theories, though controversial, suggest that the last remaining ice caps on the planet may have fully melted in less than a century. While the cause of the sudden increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide levels that occurred is unknown, catastrophic volcanism is the most likely answer. However, in recent decades, archaeologists, paleontologists, and other scientists have begun to suggest that previous sapient civilizations may have played a role. Geologists have long noted strange isotopes in geological formations that date to that time, but most scientists maintain that previous societies becoming advanced enough to build nuclear power plants, let alone nuclear weapons, is a fantasy.

Urth is a warm and wet world, with belts of jungles spanning the Aequator and ample amounts of moisture reaching across almost all the land area. Sea levels are believed to be at or near their theoretical maximum level with the amount of water currently in circulation in the planet’s hydrological cycle. While broad, flat land is more difficult to locate with sea levels this high, the savvy and intelligent sapient species of Urth are incredibly industrious and, with the power of science, have conquered the power of electricity, harnessed the atom, and ascended beyond the whims of Mother Nature to build incredible new societies the likes of which Urth has surely never seen.

Urth is a dynamic and exciting place and you are sure to find adventure waiting around every corner! Just make sure you have a fan and a cold beverage handy. It’s a bit humid.

OOC INFORMATION

This AU works almost exactly like the main Urth canon. All species that are available in the main canon are available here. Anyone who has a country on the main Urth map is welcome to file a claim here, and the process will work the same. Please post a claim in this thread using the template found in the subforum Nation Creation Starts Here. The cartographer in this AU is I’m Dead. Acronis is also helping.

Our level of technology is the same as in the main Urth canon—which is to say, the same as the current real world. The common language of diplomacy here is Threnish, the native language of the Free Threnish Territories. The common currency of international trade is TO BE DETERMINED. Any real world language, and any language you invent, is welcome for use in this AU, although we encourage you to be considerate that players who have been using a particular language or cultural inspiration in the main canon may wish to also do so here.

You are welcome, if you like, to create a country influenced by the ancient cultures of the last Ice Age, but remember that information that was stored electronically in 2022 is almost certain to be completely unreadable and inaccessible in 22022. The information that remains, carried orally from generation to generation across millennia of hunter-gatherer and early agricultural societies, is likely to have changed somewhat.

Historical Summary: The Principality of Belvadore has a history dating back 1000 years in the past. The first recorded settlers in the area were the Belvs, who established a number of small kingdoms in the region. The Threnish Empire conquered the Belvic area several times throughout history, causing the Belvs to create new kingdoms over and over again. Historical Summary:

The Seican Empire is an ancient, wealthy, conservative state that first emerged on the island of Seicany and later expanded onto the coast of mainland Gondwana. It once controlled the entire island of Seicany, but the Seican Civil War (422-413 years before the present day) ended with the northern portions of the island seceding to form Theseca.

While the current Seican state was formed 1100 years ago, ethnic Seica orcs have lived in the region of northern Gondwana for centuries more. Some of the cities in Seicany have been inhabited for thousands of years, and Seicany considers itself to be the center and pinnacle of Orcish civilization. (Whether it actually is depends on who you ask.) Ancient fortresses and walled settlements dot the landscape, some of them still inhabited and some of them preserved as archaeological landmarks.

Since the Civil War, Seicany has enjoyed an uneasy relationship with its northern neighbor. There have been several border skirmishes and a handful of outright wars in the past four centuries, though the border on the island of Seicany has changed very little in that time. In modern times, Seicans look outward, toward the rest of the world, rather than trying to relitigate the Civil War. Seicany is a powerful economy that engages in commerce all around the world, a tradition descended from its proud naval and maritime heritage. The Royal Seican Navy is among the world’s most powerful.

The current government of Seicany is described as a “semi-constitutional monarchy.” The House of Sasillei has governed Seicany as monarchs for more than three hundred years (and are descended from the first Seica monarchs, the House of Sullabor) but in the modern day, it requires winning a national election before a Princess or Prince of the Seicans can assume the throne. (In the meantime, a regency council composed of senior royals assumes the powers of the monarchy.) A First Minister, selected by the monarch from among the members of Parliament, handles most of the day-to-day affairs of governance, while the monarch is responsible for setting broad, long-term goals and is also highly involved in foreign affairs, national defense, and the selection of provincial governors and members of the Grand Council, the upper house of Parliament. The lower house, aptly named the Elect Council, is a much larger house elected by the entire population.

Historical Summary:

The ethnic Seica orcs living in the north of what was then Seicany long held that their needs were disregarded by the national government in the south that, they claimed, cared far more about expanding east then dealing with the land they already had in the more mountainous north. The Seican Civil War began in the city of Thess, one of the north’s largest ports, and those who followed their cause became known as Thess Seicans, which in the dialect of the north at the time, sounded more like “Thesecans.” The name stuck.

It took a tremendous amount of military power over the course of nine grueling years before Theseca earned its independence. However, their blood, sweat, and tears bought them what had been the agricultural heartland of Seicany and the two large, wealthy port cities on the west coast of the island. Thesecans knew then that they would have to maintain tremendous strength in order to prevent their former overlords from regaining what they had lost. For its entire history, Theseca has had a strong military with a central role not just in governance but in society. With this increased militarism came many skirmishes and wars with Seicany, in an attempt to expand their territory to complete their dominance of the island, but none were successful. There have also been six military coups in Thesecan history; some of these resulted in new governments that lasted for periods of years, but ultimately the Thesecan military was much more successful in ending these governments than it has been at ending the Seican state.

Theseca grows and exports far more food than it needs itself and has garnered a regionally powerful economy in doing so. Their strong focus on advancing military technology has also led to their noted space program. The only Seica people to step foot on the moon were Thesecans, not Seicans. Theseca has a general reputation for being very strict, very efficient, very controlled, and somewhat brutish—but at least the trains run on time.

Historical Summary: The nation of Dragullion started off as a small republic on the coast of the Poillac Sea. The nation eventually decided that the land they occupied was not enough for them. They started small and annexed one of the nations that bordered them. This was not enough to satiate their hunger. They eventually ended up conquering every nation in the immediate area, eventually they grew even hungrier and attacked nations of different cultures. They eventually grew to the size they are now, and the cultures they attacked were forced to assimilate into the nation. The nation now has finally started focusing on internal issues and has stopped expanding. The nation is prone to insurgency by the people of the cultures they erased. The nation has stood for over a thousand years, but will it last for much longer?

Historical Summary: Threna has historically been one of the premier powers of Urth, with one of the largest navies and militaries in the world. Originally founded by Humans in the region, it readily rose to prominence after the volcanic winters of the 1st century. Fuelled by a constant hunger for trade, Threnish ships linked the world together and made Threnish the lingua franca of Urth. A colonial empire was the logical result of the establishment of trading posts the world over.

Revolution of 916 brought the end of the Threnish monarchy that had ruled the country for a millennium, and the revolutionaries worked not only to dismantle the Threnish colonial empire but also any form of hierarchy within Threnish society itself. Today, not only have the many communes that constitute Threna worked to dismantle the concept of private property, but they also strictly maintain their freedom, and even the Free Threnish Assembly cannot enforce its laws without the permission of each individual commune.

Despite being an anarcho-communist society, Threna maintains one of the world’s major armed forces in the form of the Black Army, the Black Navy, and the Free Air Forces, which are also organized in accordance with anarchist principles.

Many analysts believe that Threna in its current state is a massive contradiction of ideas that will eventually collapse on itself, but if you were to ask anyone from Threna itself, they would laugh and tell you that Threna’s society should instead be seen as a model for the rest of Urth to emulate.

Historical Summary: The country of Ping Ping is located in the middle of the Dragullion Gulf, miles away from any other landmass. It is a small island, barely more than a rock in the water, and is home to a mere 50,000 people.
The island has been inhabited for centuries, and the first settlers were a group of Pingese who arrived in canoes from the mainland. They were a peaceful people and lived off the land, fishing and farming. They named it Ping Ping after the sound the waves made as they hit the rocks. Between the late 1800s and throughout the 1900s, Ping Ping was a center for nautical trade. It was also a stopping point for ships travelling between the east and west coasts of the Dragullion Gulf. The island was never a prosperous or wealthy place, but the residents were content. The Residents of Ping Ping are notorious for being very competitive, and at times lacking self-awareness, but are often regarded highly for their sportsmanship.

Historical Summary: Founded over a thousand years ago, on the banks of the Rift Sea, the Kingdom of Manarok quickly spread under the absolute monarchy that ruled them, in a time period known as the First Empire. Fortresses and castles pepper the land of Manarok, reminders of a bygone time, loved by some and hated by others. 307 years ago, a civil war occurred, started by people unsatisfied with the king’s rule. The carnage and bloodshed that occurred in those dark times were unimaginable, but in the end, the war ended in a stalemate. The King retained power, but established a constitution and a Legislature to also govern the Kingdom

In the modern day, Manarok is rife with political turmoil. Many people want to rid the Kingdom of a King entirely, and recently, the royal family itself has begun to show support for this plan. Threnra has also taken an interest in Manarok, supporting the removal of the King. However, the absolute monarchy to the south, Draguillon, has also been taking an interest in the Kingdom, supporting the continuation of the monarchy. With two superpowers slowly pulling on Manarok, only time will tell whether it will stay united or tear apart.

Historical Summary:

New Sullabora was a colony of Seicany that was settled beginning in the 5th century. In the year 744, after a series of violent riots and even brief naval skirmishes between local forces and the Royal Seican Navy, New Sullabora was granted independence. Except for a brief period in its early history when New Sullaboran privateers were known to attack Seican ships (known as the “Inter-Seican Sea War”), it has enjoyed positive relations with its mother country. It also enjoys relatively good relations with Theseca, and has in the past served as an intermediary between Theseca and Seicany.

New Sullabora has the fewest people of the three Seica countries, but is the wealthiest per capita. In its southern portions on the mainland, New Sullabora has significant deposits of minerals that are difficult to locate on the island of Seicany. It was a New Sullaboran scientist who discovered in the year 908 that Ice Age societies who had reached at least a neolithic-level of development had previously emptied the greater Seica region of minerals such as gold and diamond. For unknown reasons, the deposits in southern New Sullabora had seen much less activity during the ice age.

Southern New Sullabora is also a rich area for archaeological discoveries, as it is believed to contain some of the oldest orcish sites that are not submerged under the sea. In recent years, tension between business interests and the research community over the expansion of mineral extraction in the area has risen.

Historical Summary: The Empire of Imbrana was formed after the Dominion of Arsal in 21878, after decades of warmongering against the two other powers of the region: Maloki and Oprat. In the first place, the Arsalian Lord Amid formed an alliance with Oprat in order to face the expansion of Maloki, but when victory was near, Oprat suffered a revolution which turned them against their former allies of Arsal. Arsal ended with the revolution of Oprat, but instead of bringing the previous government back, Amid declared the Empire of Imbrana over the combined territories of Arsal, Oprat and Maloki. The name was picked after Imbrana the Queen of All, an ancient monarch of Arsal who sought divinity by conquering all lands known. In order to control the constant risk of revolt, Amid made all emperors have a limit of a decade in office and submit himself to vote against a Maloki candidate: Kamat. Once he did, Kamat defeated Amid by the combined votes of the former population of Maloki and Oprat, but instead of restoring the invaded countries, Kamat put into work an extensive propaganda of unity of Arsal, Maloki and Oprat against their potential enemies and in favour of stability. With only two exceptions, all Emperors have been in power for the whole decade they have been elected for. This unity and stability have made of Imbrana a considerable power in most geopolitical aspects; however, the population hasn’t benefitted from this in noticeable ways, and their quality of life grows, but at a slow pace.
